Israel to allow Palestinians stranded in Egypt back to Gaza
PA officials say Palestinians to be individually approved by Israel, taken to Gaza through Erez crossing.
By News AgenciesIsrael has agreed to allow hundreds of Palestinians stranded in Egypt since Hamas' June takeover of Gaza to pass into Israel and then into the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials said Saturday.
"Due to the absence of Palestinian security forces at Rafah Crossing, and amid Egyptian, Israeli and European refusals to reopen the crossing, we agreed with the Israelis to let the people cross at an Israeli crossing," said Palestinian Prisoners Affairs Minister Ashraf el-Ajrami.
Palestinian Information Minister Riad Maliki said that some of the 6,000 Palestinians who have been waiting in the Egyptian border town of Rafah would be allowed to pass at the beginning of next week.
Hamas denounced the deal, arguing that it allowed Israel to decide who could enter Gaza. Hamas officials and supporters would presumably not be allowed to enter through Israel.
"Israel has agreed in principle to the passage of the Palestinians, and must approve of the names of potential passengers on lists the Palestinians must compile," Maliki said.
The Palestinians would pass from Egypt into Israel through the rarely-used Al-Oja crossing, then into the northern Gaza Strip through the Erez crossing, he said.
El-Ajrami said that Egyptian buses would carry the stranded Palestinians from Sinai desert to another Israeli border crossing between Israel and Egypt, from where they would be brought back to the Gaza Strip.
"It is not the first time that such a mechanism is used. Two years ago, hundreds of Palestinian pilgrims left the Gaza Strip to Saudi Arabia via the same crossing," said el-Ajrami.
Israel did not immediately comment on the deal. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev would only say that Israel was searching for creative solutions to return the Palestinians to Gaza.
"No one wants to see those people trapped indefinitely," Regev said.
Israel has already approved a list of 627 Palestinians who will be allowed to cross at the beginning of next week, according to Hani Jabbour, a Palestinian security coordinator stationed the Egyptian side of Rafah.
"On Sunday, 100 will cross and the rest will pass on Monday," Jabbour said. "Further transfers through such a route are expected in the future," he continued.
The Palestinians have been unable to return to Gaza because of the closure of the Rafah border terminal between Egypt and the Gaza Strip since June 9. The border terminal was jointly controlled by Egypt, Israel, the Palestinians, and overseen by European monitors.
Israel and Egypt have rejected Hamas demands since its bloody takeover in mid-June to have partial control of the terminal.
Hamas denounced the deal, saying the group must have a say in Palestinian movement.
"There is only the Rafah border crossing," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said. "The use of any other border crossing increases Israeli control over the Gaza Strip."
Hamas had opposed a similar idea in the past, according to which the stranded Palestinians would have crossed through the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom passage into the Gaza Strip.
Hamas militants attacked the Kerem Shalom crossing with mortar shells in response to the idea.
Hundreds of the stranded Palestinians in Egypt have been living in harsh conditions in the Sinai desert. International aid groups have repeatedly called for their plight to be speedily resolved.

A world you live in. I suggest you study the meaning of "admission". "Systematic abuse", they're in the Sinai, being handled by the Egyptians. Any abuse is therefore by Arabs. "not hurt Hamas as intended." Egypt and Israel tried to return them by Rafah, but Hamas said no. How is that E&I trying to "hurt Hamas"? "Israel has finally done the decent thing. But not because it was decent." Anything "bad" Israel does in Mark's eyes is, of course "bad", and anything it does "good" is also "bad", because we Jews are just too evil to do anything good for the sake of it. Wow, such twisted fantasies of hate. I grew up in Dallas, and never met someone as antisemitic as Mark. He's another reason why I dislike Houston.
"The Palestinians have no say" 1) They said no to a State in '48 2) They said no to Israel's existence in the founding documents of the PLO, Fatah, Hamas, IJ, PFLP, ... 3) They said no when they overwhelmingly elected terrorists in their last election. Yet you claim they "have no say". They keep saying they want war, yet an ignoramus from Houston keeps denying that. As for "legal occupation", that definition means military control and government. Of course, Israel has neither, so again Mark lies. That Israel has the right to perform incursions into an area from which a people make attacks in support of a call to destroy Israel doesn't make it an occupation, it means Israel is fighting a war the Arabs began and continue. Mark can't handle that, or the good 'ole Southern antisemitism might not be supported.
Ok # 37, Houstonian. As an ex Houstonian, you need to learn the facts and stop reading Arab propaganda before you put pen to paper. I bet you have never been in this region or only in Gaza to listen to the "crybabies" who dont do anything for their people but bring them hardships. Israel moved out of Gaza, what have the Gazans done with their land. NOTHING. When are you going to lift your "Berlin Wall" in Texas and give back the land to the Mexicans which was forcefully taken from them? And stop arresting the Mexicans who have the right of return to their land in Texas?
It is so easy to blame everybody, but truly there are only a few Hamas leaders who sentenced all residents of Gaza to this misery. A partial responsibility lies in the courts of all Arab countries who can not meet pragmatic goals because they are spineless tyrants and afraid of orthodox religious preachers. The Iranian Junta and the Kreml are also corrupt partners in the game against Israel. Finally, there are Israeli extremist leaders who are eternally ready for violent times just in old biblical fashions. Isn't it enough? Sorry for Gaza, cry for Gaza, and shame on all the incitement postings!
This represents a very important, if unstated, admission by Israel. The systematic abuse of those Palestinians languishing in limbo has not hurt Hamas as intended. Rather it has helped Hamas by reinforcing the appearance of Israel as willing to commit any abuse to forward it's agenda. Israel has finally done the decent thing. But not because it was decent. The urge to commit sadistic revenge against it's 'enemies" is just as pronounced a characteristic of Israel as it is of the Palestinians. Both seem to prefer revenge to anything else. And both seem incapable of learning when that sadistic revenge simply promotes more sadistic revenge on the part of the other.
Yes the settlers left Gaza in Aug. of 2005. But the state of Israel has never relinquished absolute control of the population register. If a Gazan Palestinian is not on the Israeli computer they might just as well not exist!
#4. Gazan. Stop lobbing Katushas and then maybe you wll have acess to the civilized world. You have done enough trouble in Netanya with the suicide bombers, ruining lives of hundreds of young people maimed for the rest of their lives.
Here again, Israel is the good guy, but the bad guy in Gaza. These Hamasniks will never know what it is "to be nice". Let them stay in Egypt. Nothing should go in or out of Gaza. Let them manage it in their own way, they wanted it, they have it.
"Is it Israel`s business to interfere ARAB PROBLEMS?" - Vittorio Israel has never relinquished it's legal occupation of Gaza. It remains, in theory, in sole control of what and whom may be admitted.
we 're really concerned an worried! Are we going to stay ,like this, tapped in gaza under the mercy of hamas for ever?We want to go out! i call the israeli prime minister to have some consideration for us!it is true that it s hard to understand when you don't live actually the situation!WE' RE LIVING IN A PRISON!!!HEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!
what Hamas says. The three gov entities will do what is necessary to do the right thing. Hamas is an ego driven bunch of kooks.
A lot of those people went to Egypt for medical treatment. Why not let them go home to their families?
not our problem.
Israel has security concerns regarding weapons smuggling, but has put Egypt in charge of actually handling the border. Therefore, Egypt has demonstrated its trust of its fellow Arabs in Gaza by locking up thousands of them for over a month without charges. Look at the global outcry that isn't there. If Egypt was in charge of Gaza they would all be dead by now. Smuggling weapons is one thing, but Egypt knows better than to actually trust Doctor Ayman Al Zawahiri's friends.
When your so called civilians voted for Hamas, they became responsible for Hamas's War. Now they have to accept the consequences of voting for War. Support the Jihad, die like a Jihadi. The idea of smuggling not occurring is ludicrous. There are no European Observers, even their most back bending newspapers are afraid to put reporters in Gaza. We know you have tunnels because we blow them up constantly and intercept smugglers with explosives and weapons caches all the time. Egypt would not release these people back in to Gaza without Israeli Assurances. Egypt, does not want responsibility for Gaza either. Egypt knows that Gaza is filled with lecherous scum and if Gaza was forced on them, they would kill every last one of you and the international community would not make a peep. A country can control its own borders, but not any other countries borders. As long as Gazans act like Animals attacking everything and every one around them, no one has any reason to let you through.
There are a Billion Moslems in the World and the Arab Portion Alone controls more land than the Soviets ever did.
If Gaza was a country, every missile they launch would be an act of war, which would give Israel the right to turn Gaza in to Dresden. You can not claim autonomy and then shirk responsibility for your actions like a two year old. They are either grown ups or tantrum throwing toddlers.
So Egypt has had these people locked up for more than a month and Israel went out of its way to get them released back to their home, but their home has been taken over by Hamas that objects to this. They should be very afraid of walking back in to Gaza just to be slaughtered for collaboration.
It's clear that Hamas don't care about their own people. They don't care if they rot in the desert for the next 50 years.
"One state controlled by the Jewish people in Palestine called Israel. Another, for the Arab people controlled by Israel called Palestine. This is why there is no two-state solution. " says the other Alan .... So you mean it doesn`t have anything at all to do with Qassams, suicide bombers, car bombs, stabbings, incitement, killer cartoons characters, martyrdom for killing Jews and a complete rejection of peace no matter what the circumstance does it Alan? As I said to "Fred" put a bit of perspective on your thought processes know what I mean ?
Gazans!! Rafah or Israel, what's the big deal?? You should be happy that Israel will from now on control whom gets in and whom gets out. Look at it in a positive way: - No more arms smugling - No more Al-qaeda terrorists infiltrating Gaza - No more Iranian visitors and Hamas visits to Iran. Instead of whinning over it you should be thanking Israel. For sure your quality o life will improve.
sovereignty over the Gaza Strip. Such a move, backed up by Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, will benefit all, including the Egyptians who will have direct control over an area on its border that if not kept in check may be a source of more trouble to the Egyptian regime!
in exchange I much doubt Israel is right. It opens the gates to anyone from Gaza, to those escaping hamas and now to these people. They were stranded in Egypt. Shouldn?t the problem have been dealt by their hamas government and Egypt?
The native Copts in Egypt certainly agree that they're occupied, treated poorly by the Muslim invaders. Gaza, meanwhile, continues to be occupied by jihadists claiming Israel should be destroyed. Yet the Pal who supports that war claims that Israel has no right to control the borders of the land that demands its destruction. Yet again, Arabs show that hypocrisy was Mohammed's middle name.
Egypt doesn't want it opened either. Can't say I blame them a whole lot. But, as one young mom from Gaza said, I don't care which crossing I have to use as long as I can go home to my children. Works for me and most people. I like that Egypt and Israel are coordinating the return of many Gazans to their home. Perhaps Hamas should stop protesting everything and shelling the crossings so people can get to their homes and families.
Egypt doesn't want the crossing opened up either. They don't want Hamasniks running in and out of Egypt causing trouble. Not surprising, if you ask me.
Hamas prefers dead Palestinians -- up to 20 last week -- Great leadership by these moral idiots.
Imagine for a moment the two-state 'solution'. One state controlled by the Jewish people in Palestine called Israel. Another, for the Arab people controlled by Israel called Palestine. This is why there is no two-state solution. All the more reason for GW Bush to support it. Call it faith-based unreality.
"And since Gaza`s only border with a 3rd party country (Egypt) is closed, Gaza remains legally under Israeli occupation." Oh dear the world is controlled by the Jews. All events around the globe are being directed by the Jews. Its the Jews the Jews the Jews .... it doesn't have anything at all to do with Qassams, suicide bombers, car bombs, stabbings, incitement, killer cartoons characters, martyrdom for killing Jews and a complete rejection of peace no matter what the circumstance does it Fred? Fred ... put a bit of perspective on your thought processes know what I mean ?
how would israel know if the names that teh PALs compile are truely the people who would enter?? who is guaranteeing this info? unless abbas is personally responsible for any terrorists who entered gaza, this is a no go. its time to have a response for each and ever error on the PALs side. if a single terrorists is brought into gaza, then a building should be knocked down. if a single person let in shoot a single rocket towards israel, then 10 buildings should be knocked down in gaza. also why the hell is this being allow while rockets are still fired at israel from gaza? why reward the PALs??
Under international law the test of occupation is CONTROL. In fact, Israel continues to exert full control over Gaza's coast line, its land borders and its air space. And since Gaza's only border with a 3rd party country (Egypt) is closed, Gaza remains legally under Israeli occupation.
Hamas officials need to pull their heads out of their rear ends and realize that some of these stranded Palestinians are in dire need of medical attention. Some of them are elderly and I am sure there are pregnant women who should not be held hostage to the whims of Hamas. This is a humanitarian disaster and attention must be paid to it. Allow these people to go through for the love of humanity!
I thought there was a border and acrossing between Egypt and Gaza with no Israeli lands between. If weapons can be sent through that border, why not people? My understanding was that Egypt was not allowing the people to cross. Is this story a trifle biased?
i formally congratulate Israel for its superiority over us Arabs in technology and military even if its a small country and we are more than 10 million people
We were debating on this forum whether Gaza is occupied or not occupied by Israel. This deal shows that not only Gaza is occupied but Egypt is also occupied. Where are the 70 million Egyptians? When are you going to say no to your dictator who is humiliating all Arabs? The border between Egypt and Gaza should not be in any way or shape or form an Israeli business.
No end to cringing and submisson,Israelis just don't want a soveregn state of their own
As one young woman said, I don't care which crossing I use, I just want to get home. Hamas is making people suffer for nothing, but Hamas collective egos. Their coup was a huge mistake.
Israel insits on exerting full physical control over movement of people and goods and access from and to Palestinian territories. Rafah crossing is lies over Gaza's only border with another country besides israel i.e Egypt. The claim that the crossing has been used to smuggle arms into Gaza is refuted by the European observers who keep vigilant surveillance of what goes in and out. It remains that closing Rafah is a form of pressure on the population that is hoped to change hearts and minds away from Hamas. Again, a collective punishment for a population that believed the International Community's democratic hypocrisy.
Vittorio: Is it Israel`s business to interfere ARAB PROBLEMS? Yep.. it is Vittorio. Although sad and could have been different, the border crossing between Egypt and Israel is used to smuggle arms and rockets into Gaza. The agreement is that European Union soldiers keep watch at the post. As Hamas is preventing them doing that Israel closed the place. Thats the agreement. This could have been different...
entry , Abbas is still pissed off at hamas killing Fatahniks , so Abbas orders Israel and Egypt and Europeans observers to close rafah crossings so not to allow hamasniks into Gaza thru Rafah crossings , Abbas knows that thru that rafah crossings hamas operatives who got training in Iran will infiltrate Gaza , so Abbas orders Israel to open up a southerner crossing only for those whom Abbas allowed after Abbas verified the list , If Europeans observers and Egypt open Rafah Crossings , they may be seen as helping Hamas , Abbas also ordered his guy at the UN to oppose Quatar initiative of humanitarian bs made in Hamas name ,
