Israel threat to attack Iran is not a bluff, deputy FM says

Danny Ayalon tells Sky News that Iran conduct regarding international efforts is bid to 'buy time and procrastinate.

By News Agencies Tags: Iran nuclear Israel news

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon has said that Israel is not bluffing in its threats to take military action against Iran's contentious nuclear program, in remarks broadcast Friday on Sky News.

"The one who's bluffing is Iran, which is trying to play with cards they don't have," Ayalon told the British station. "All the bravado that we see and the testing and the very dangerous and harsh rhetoric is hiding a lot of weaknesses."

The minister's remarks came just a week after the international community proposed a draft nuclear deal that would have seen much of Iran's uranium shipped abroad for enrichment. Iran has demanded changes to the draft but has not yet given its final response.

Ayalon called Iran's tactics in dealing with international power a method of stalling. "If Iranian behavior and conduct continues as they have exhibited so far, it is obvious that their intentions are only to buy time and procrastinate," he said.

Also on Friday, the Guardian reported that the United Nations nuclear watchdog has asked Iran to explain evidence suggesting the Islamic Republic's scientists have experimented with an advanced nuclear warhead design.

The newspaper, citing what it describes as "previously unpublished documentation" from an International Atomic Energy Agency compiled dossier, said Iranian scientists may have tested high-explosive components of a "two-point implosion" device.

With all due respect to Israel and the IDF, you don't have what it would take. The air attack would be 200-300 sorties with bunker busting bombs, which only the USA has. The Israeli air force cannot accomplish that feat without the US. And Fly over-rights of Iraq. Neither will happen..the USA has an army on the ground in Iraq and around the region. Price of Oil will go sky high pushing the world back into a recession. This is fantasy talk, which upsets and disturbs most of the world.

I don't think you're up-to-date on the developments. Last Wednesday was a HUGE success for the Greens. Yes the regime is using brutal force but the people are not backing down. There is no fear in their eyes. Unfortunately, this one needs to cook entirely by the Iranians themselves. Any attack anywhere on the territory will jeopardize the sacrifices people have made already and only benefits the regime by strengthening it. Just like any other nation, people rally around their gov when under attack (regardless they are for or opposed to). I bet you though, AN is praying to his mehdi for an attack.

Iran needs the nuke to enhance its status as an Islamic power in a Sunni dominated Islamic World ! The nuke will bring Iran to the international stage and no other entrance (you gassed it) better than the Palestinians-Israeli conflict. An open door to all kind of intruders ! Danny Ayalon could be right. Iran's threat is a reality that only Israel can not help to anticipate. With the madness of the present Islamophobia taking the world by a storm & the irrational Mullahas & Israel always in the news; a combination of reasons, that can make Israel unsafe of the Iranians threats ! Iran is the optimum of the 6th Century Islam, It can't be other than a danger to Israel & the world ! Its removal as an Islamic Republic is a top priority for the world community of nations.

The people of Iran need more time no doubt hoping to topple the regime. Unfortunately, the regime has check mated the opposition by using excessive force as portrayed by the media. Maybe a helping hand, such as taking out the Revolutionary Guards and their sidekicks by an Israeli ICBM surgical strike would be in order. Good luck to the Green Party. I understand that hundreds have been detained. Who knows how many have been tortured, flogged or hung. Long live those that seek freedom in Iran. Good day from very cold snowy Swiss Alps.

The Iranians have looked at what the IDF did in Lebanon, and in Gaza, and they have formed the opinion (correctly) that while it's mighty good at beating up little old ladies and children it's hopeless against anyone who can fight back. Iran can fight back. As far as they are concerned you can shut your yap, yap, yapping and bring it on..... They fancy their chances, and with good reason.

Not so sure it would be too wise to take on Iran, it's one thing for Israel to wage war on women and children in Gaza, but with Iran you're mixing it with the big boys. Any attack would result in a rain of missiles on Tel Aviv, and of course I don't imagine any of the Iranian proxy armies, such as Hamas and Hizbollah, would like to miss out on the opportunity to try out their latest weaponry!

"Prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, Iran had diplomatic relations with Israel." That is part of the reason that they turned against Israel after the revolution; most of the public including many who were opposed to religious rule supported an uprising because conditions under the Shah were so bad. "After the Revolution Iran broke off all relations and became committed to the destruction of Israel." They made statements against the US, USSR, Israel etc... The war with Iraq was mainly caused by Iraq so it is hard to say they were very committed to war with anyone. They were somewhat involved in Lebanon but the war there had much earlier roots. Iran want nukes more than other countries because it feels more threatened. Ahmadinejad is a bit crazy in his public statements but the actual policy of the government is realpolitik as one sees in any other country. Aside from the real threats from Israel, the main role of Israel in Iranian politics relates to regional PR.

who should be worried about who? Should israel be worried about Iran who doesn't have nuclear weapons now and denies that they are seeking them or should Iran be worried about Israel who DOES have nukes and is hawkishly threatening Iran to use them? Of course Iran would want nukes. I hope they get them so that we can put this whole charade to rest. Israel would now think twice before attacking Iran, and Iran wouldn't dare use a nuke on Israel because they know they would get destroyed if they did.

This is just the beginning. The Islamofascist regime of Ayatollahs is on its last leg.In the next 2 years the protests will become of larger and larger. The pronouncements of Israeli political and military leaders have two target audiences. One is the Israeli population who have to be reasured that plans do exists to act militarely if Iranian Rulers do go crazy, develop nuclear weapons and may be in a position to strike Israel. At last resort if US and Western Rurope does nothing to stop Iranian maniac leaders Israel will have no option but to strike The second target audience:EU and USA.

Iran has not done very much at all to do anything like you claim. In the early years it was so embroiled in the war with Iraq that it had no time or resources. The Iranian Israeli war of words is a fairly recent phenomenon. Zachary again --Additionally, Ahmadinajad constantly denies the Holocaust while boasting about a new one. Denying the Jewish holocaust is irrelevant. It means nothing and has nothing to do with threatening Israel. Also, AJ has not boasted about a new one. That is pure BS. This is all happening as Iran races towards nuclear weapons. In light of that your contention makes little sense.- Zachary There is no evidence that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon. There is a Fatwa against the use or possession of nuclear weapons by one of their leading clerics. All threats of direct military action have come from Israel.

Israel supplied spare parts and tires for Iran's F-4s and other US supplied weapons to Iran in 1981 following the attack by Iraq. At least 12 flights were flown, the last known of which was a CL-44 transport (LV-JTN) which was flown from Tel-Aviv to Larnaca, Cyprus and was shot down trying to sneak into Iranian via the Soviet Armenia. The aircraft crashed 30 miles south of Yerevan and caused a bit of embarrassment for the Reagan administration which was replacing the materials Israel supplied.

I can't decide if this continued talk about military action is the result of madness or old fashioned stupidity. I have spent many months reading literature, studies, analysis, reports, opinions, and plain old conjecture as to how Israel could conceivably mount a strike against Iran. I have not come accross a single 'strategy' which does not bring upon the region the sort of destruction that Israel says it wants to avoid. Perhaps I have missed something, so if someone would like to enlighten me (and any other talkbackers who are interested) as to how Isreal (with or without the help of the US) can disable Irans military, its agents, its proxies, its supporters, and of course its nuclear facilities simultaneously (so as to avoid the risk of severe repercusions throughout the region), I would be interested to hear from them.

Sir, it is YOU who detached from the real world and the lack ok ubiased knowledge is clearly evident in your postings. This article was NOT about Israel at the UN! The US did not publish the report you are referring to, Clinton/Obama have relaaxed their settlemtn freeze demands and the WHOLE WORLD is preparing for war with Iran. Wake up man! Further, Iran has already snubbed its nose at the deal it has been presented.

The United States publishes a report which directly compares Israel with Iran. On top of that Clinton calls for a settlement freeze in the occupied territories. Netanyahu goes to the US on Sunday to be told what he is going to do. And the Deputy FM talks about starting a war with Iran, when the rest of Planet Earth is close to reaching a deal over Iran's nuclear ambitions. Good luck with that. Israeli politicians are becoming increasingly detached from the real world, and that is dangerous.
