Israel's UN ambassador: Goldstone report was born of hate, executed in sin

Gabriela Shalev speaks at UN General Assembly debate on report that accused Israel of war crimes.

By Shlomo Shamir Tags: Israel news

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gabriela Shalev, spoke at the opening of a UN General Assembly debate on a report accusing Israel of having committed war crimes in Gaza, saying that the report was "conceived in hate and executed in sin."

The report, dubbed the Goldstone report, was compiled by South African jurist Richard Goldstone and his fact-finding mission which reviewed the conduct of Israel and Hamas during Israel's offensive in Gaza last winter.

Shalev, one of the first speakers at the UN debate, began her address by offering her and Israel's condolences for the victims of the terror attacks recently carried out in Baghdad and in Pakistan.

She went on to exert her belief that the debate held Wednesday wasn't "real" or straightforward, because "rather than confronting terrorism, the General Assembly chose again to detach itself from reality," she said, alleging that the body was launching "yet another campaign against the victims of terrorism, the people of Israel."

Shalev criticized Goldstone's mission, saying that "from its inception in a one-sided mandate, the [Goldstone] Gaza fact-finding mission was a politicized body with predetermined conclusions."

The report is a product of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, she argued, calling it an organization obsessed with Israel which has produced more condemnations of Israel than all the other UN member states combined.

Shalev mentioned the ongoing rocket fire from Gaza into Israel and argued that the basic human rights of nearly one million Israelis pelted with rockets for nearly a decade does not concern the Human Rights Council.

Later, the Israeli ambassador criticized the very debate of the issue at the General Assembly in New York. She condemned the "cynical political maneuvers" that prompted the Human Rights Council to transmit its report to New York.

Israel is committed to abiding by international law, Shalev declared, adding that the protocols of waging armed warfare are part of every Israeli soldier's training. Shalev also reiterated that Israel was committed to investigating any claim of wrongdoing by its army.

Shalev concluded her address by saying that the Goldstone report, and the UN debate, won't advance peace, but rather hinder efforts to resume peace talks because the report denies Israel's right to self defense.

If anyone is detached from reality it must sure- ly be the Israeli Ambassador, Gabiela Shalav . Instead of accepting responsibility for Israel' wrong doing and war crimes she criticsm towards Judge Goldstone and the UN body itself. What an ungrateful and disloyal member! She is lucky to have a seat at the table as Israel has no real legitimacy until it fulfills its UN Membership (a. accepts a sovereign Pale- stinian state. b. allows the return of refugee.) Thus, Israel is riding on the goodwill of other nations who have a right to kick its ambassador out. Dutch

I honestly don't get the explanations behind calling Goldstone and his report all those nasty things. I watched several of his interviews and there is no doubt the man is a God fearing Jew with an amazing resume for dealing with the ugliest of human crimes. Are the attacks against him insinuating that he would taint the great career that he has had because he is paid off by Hamas or something? Do you really think he is saying those things because of UN food stamps Hamas paid him off with? I just don't get it.

"conceived in hate and executed in sin." Exactly how the state of israel was created. If israel claims it isn't guilty of war crimes, then why try to block or dis-credit this report?

So, if "more likely it would reveal that the IDF went to painstaking measures" why didn't Israel participate then and produce all this wonderful "evidence" of their "restraint"? The fact that they didn't participate in my opinion makes it "more likely" that such restraint didn't exist (you only have to look at the casualty statistics to draw that conclusion).

Maybe, just maybe, this character trait has been their problem throughout history. I have been wondering why it is that Jews have been persecuted in so many countries, or asked to leave. What is the common demoninator of Israelis? Lack of empathy and compassion? In the film of the Nuremberg trials, the Jewish phychologist - in his attempt to define evil - says: perhaps lack of empathy is the source of evil. Or something to that effect. I so want to be on the Israeli side, and no longer find it possible. Both Palestinians and Israelis have made lying into a fine art.

    • 05:01

I'm confused. To all the people who are referencing Goldstone's Jewish identity - is this really relevant to the conversation at hand? Does his Jewish background somehow heighten the legitimacy of his report? If he were Muslim, would the report have any less credence in your eyes? The fact of the matter is that Israel refused to participate in aiding the Goldstone commission, so clearly the report is missing key information from the Israeli perspective. Perhaps this information would support Goldstone's conclusions, but more likely it would reveal that the IDF went to painstaking measures to minimize civilian casualty in there assault on an aggressive and murderous terrorist organization. Stop using Goldstone's heritage to disfigure the truth of the situation at hand.

The ambassador's characterization of Goldstone's report, the report of a Jewish judge, universally regarded as a fair-minded person, and a supporter of Israel to boot, and that the ambassador does this unaware that it will make things much worse for Israel, is a sign that the Israeli establishment is losing touch with reality.

THe UNHRC NEVER changed the mandate Goldstone claims the President authorised him to expand it. The President alone does not have that authority. As was shown by the how the UNHRC mistreated the report.

They have pulled out all their guns to decimate and destroyGoldstone's character, just like they did in destroying the civilian infrastructure in Gaza. They have called on all their minions in the US-AIPAC, Dershowitz and Foxman et al and thier agents in Congress to continue their campaign of defamation. They really know what will happen if the truth gets out so they trot out the usual games they do like anti-semitism and the Holocaust card and the threats and fine that it is working...but not as well as it has in the past. Shalev's words are pathetic and nothing more than a chep trick to deflect attention from what she knows Israel will be found guilty of.

Israel Supporters Can Write On Other Issues If They Want!!!
    • Lance
    • 04.11.09
    • 20:46

The Un Human Rights Council has taken a bold step by endorsing eminent Judge Richard Goldstone's report despite all of Israel's efforts to smear this distinguished Jewish person of conscience! Of course it is understood tha some of the states that endorsed this Report have questionable human rights records but so what as the reality is still the same? Instead o spending all their fforts trying to distract away from the war crimes that Israel has committed against Palestinian civilians but particularly children, Israel supporters do have the choice to write about other issues that they say concern them so much such as Drafur, the Congo, ad Iran and so on. Instead, Israel supporters continuously harp about others needing to write on issues of concern to them. As such, Israel supporters should be encouraged to write on issues that they say "concern them so much" and that they do have the power to "stop wasting their time" by demanding others to write on issues of concern to "them".

Does Israel think if they keep repeating the same mantra over and over again people are more likely to buy it? As for the "Born of hate, executed in sin" crap; Anyone would think Goldstone had stomped up and down on a copy of the Torah. Next they'll be calling him the Devil's spawn.
