Israel's U.S. envoy: Obama peace plan unrealistic

Special Mideast envoy Mitchell reaffirms support for two-state solution, as well as Israel-Syria peace.

By DPA Tags: George Mitchell Middle East peace Israel news

Israel's ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, deemed U.S. special Mideast envoy George Mitchell's vision of peace within two years an "unrealistic goal".

Oren told The Washington Post in remarks published Monday that Mitchell's timetable "is unrealistic and might prove counterproductive."

"We know from our experience that state-making takes a long time," he added.

Oren's response came two days after Mitchell suggested that Barack Obama's administration was free to withhold loan guarantees from Israel should the latter delay the peace process any further.

Washington is now considering the possibility of launching "proximity talks" between Israel and the Palestinians, as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas continues to object to direct talks.

Under this plan, Mitchell and his staff would meet separately with both parties, present each side's positions to the other and then try to bridge the gaps. This is the same system both George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton used (unsuccessfully) for Israeli-Syrian talks.

Mitchell: Obama committed to comprehensive Mideast peace

Meanwhile, Mitchell on Monday reaffirmed Washington's support for a two-state solution to the Middle East crisis, and said a comprehensive regional peace was necessary for ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"A two-state solution is central to our peace efforts," Mitchell told journalists in Paris, after a meeting with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner.

Mitchell added that Obama was committed to "a comprehensive peace in the Middle East," which included Israeli peace agreements with Syria and Lebanon as well as formal diplomatic ties between Israel and all its neighbors in the region.

Neither Mitchell nor Kouchner would comment on the present state of Middle East peace negotiations.

The former U.S. senator was in Paris ahead of a meeting of the international community's top negotiators on the Middle East in Brussels on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Mitchell is to hold talks in Brussels with the European Union's newly-nominated foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, as well as the official Envoy of the Quartet on the Middle East, Tony Blair.

To duly declare the State of PALESTINE on the occupied territory up to the 67 Borders. Cannot understand the meaning of Mr Oren, when he said"We know by EXPERINCE that state-making takes a long time." He forgot that Mr Ben Gurion declare Israel's Independence in may 1948, he did not wait 42 years, as the Palestinians are now waiting. All the Palestinians are doing is TALKING ENDLESSLY while the OCCUPIED TERRITORIES are being Illegally swallowed.

Israel have to make peace with the Arabs, the Islamic countries, which are mostly Sunni Muslims. So,as the saying go "if you can't beat them JOIN THEM" is the way forward. The created homeland for the Jews in Israel is in a warring neighborhood,it is better to be friendly with your neighbors, than being in conflict with them.It is more beneficial to us. Let us be fair, we did not have a land, we were given 55% of Palestine, now the Palestinians (inc. HAMAS) accepting for us to have 78%, so we should be greatful to them. Having whole of the cake (100%) can only bring our demise as a JEWISH STATE. WE all know What a BINATIONAL STATE mean to us. So Mr PM go for the Negociating table NOW rather than waiting for Pres. ABBAS going to the United Nations for their legal share of PALESTINE MANDATE., which is 45%, so let them creat their State on the 22% they are asking. FAIR is FAIR

when the moon is changing direction. Seriously, Israel has another 10 months to create a big conflict that will bring about a rift with USA. The reason being that after the November midterm election, Mr. Obama will have a diminished represention power in the Congress, and have hard time to advance his agenda, internal as well as external which in his case basecally are complementary. President Obama will see his power clipped and his frustration soaring, especially against Israel. The mood of the American public opinion will be such inemical to various Obama initiatives, that will divide it. Here, Israel should take steps to promote the emergence of Chinese importance in the international arena, to diffuse any possible mishap by the American Admiinistration, as it certainly will happen because it will require the financial need of the Saudis, to stop the Dollar decline and the economical slowdown producing more unemoplyment. Under pressure from his constituency,Israelwillhavetopay

with a No Matter Basis! Israel will rush into negotiations and finalize a peace treaty. This thing about Israel suggesting that it would counter it by building more on occupied lands, confiscating and annexing - is a thing of the past which will be flatly called illegal and will just increase all kinds of world pressure on Israel, including from many world Jewry organizations and Billions of people hitting the streets in every single country. Palestine would be swiftly recognized by more nations than Israel. In brief, the ball is in Israel's camp! Oren, and his boss' boss know it! The guy in between them lives in lala land.

Israel should not give one millimter of ground won with blood. I don't want to discuss pre 1967 borders. Israel should take the entire West Bank.

about peace it could play some cards. The Pals have nothing to give. Israel has taken away everything from them including their dignity. The cards that Israel must play include: immediate withdrawal from all illegal settlements (especially from those build on sites of razed Pal villages); end of the occupation; all troops behind the Green Line; candid admission of having nuclear weapons. Then and only then should peace negotiations start. Anything less is wasted time and dangerous for the US, just as it has been for 50 years. Oh, yes, Israel stop meddling in US affairs (via AIPAC, spies, etc.)

no Palestinian state can be formed or negotiated with until Hamas and the PA reconcile their differences. There is no one on the Palestinian side that can speak for and bind into an agreement a two state solution. Therefore the reconcialiation of Hamas and the PA are a prerequisite to any negotiations.

Why should the arab states allow Israel to fly over their countries? When Israel wont allow the Palestinians to build an airport in the West Bank, destroyed the airport in Gaza, and basically forces Palestinians of US nationality to fly into Jordan or Eygpt to visit their families. You get Israel to agree to that before asking Obama to pressure the Arabs. This is coming from a Puerto Rican with no stake in either side.

"State making takes a long time". When did the clock start on the making of a Palestinian state? We want to know how many more years of bloodshed and war we can expect. Of course state making will take even longer (and be more bloody) when only one side is committed to the making of that state. BTW, when did "state making" for the state of Israel begin?

For 60 years, Israel and the pals have managed to avoid peace because they hate each other more than they want peace. As long as these attitudes persist on either side, peace won't be achieved in a thousand years, much less two.

The U.S. needs Israel more than Israel needs the U.S., actually. Obama has a track record of creating virtually nothing. He consistently tries to impose an idealistic, divisive agenda, only to cause an uproar that forces him to pull back and then "re-frame" his agenda to save face. The Palestinians are years and years and years away from forming any true "state." They are a divided people who have a good probability of either incurring a civil war with Hamas or being taken over by Hamas in the West Bank. Israel will NEVER permit more terror groups on its doorstep. The PALS will have to abandon any notion of a capital in Jerusalem, a move that would result in terror for the city as the radical elements continue their agenda to ultimately destroy Israel. Right now, Israel needs firm warriors at the helm and to deflect the imposition of plans for its future by outside entities--PARTICULARLY OBAMA, whose past is ridden with associations with Jew/Israel bashers and haters. Its true.

For years, decades, Israel's mantra was: we do what we do for security and nothing more. We long for peace and are saddened that we have no partner. Well, that is today seen for what it is; a cover for their real intentions which are verifiable by their constant redefinition of their agreements with the international community and their continuing theft of land and entrenchment of occupation. Israel wants one thing and that is not peace. They want land, the want to estblish demographic facts on that stolen land and do it as quickly as possible so there will be no possibility of return. It is a rgime that ithrives on being aggressive, threatening and rapacious. It is time for the international community to react with sanctions and boycotts.

Wow, with an offer on the table to get their first nation the Pals can't even come to the table and talk face to face. That says it all!!! They would rather whine about settlements and anything else they can think of than actually talk about getting a country. Israel having made the biggest concessions agreeing to the two-state solution, accepting the Pals as a separate entity and already defining approximately 95% of what will be Palestine. Remember their money gets cut off from countries like Iran and Syria if they make peace. Hamas has already stated they will NOT honor ANY agreement the PA makes, and Hamas was the elected government and have recently stated they still do not recognize Israel's "right to exist".

    • 20:54

The US adminstration regrets that Israel continues to be in violation of its commitments to our government and the international community. Israel is consistently breaking down their commitment to a freeze of settlement activity and has lined it with so many exceptinal clauses that it is virtually inoperable. The US is committed to a two state solution and that this goa must be achieved within two years. Final status questions must be discussed and solutions achieved. Isrel is in defiance of what is expected of its as a party to the conflict. Its recent actions on the ground are not encouraging. As a result we have no other opton than to cease all funds directed to a government that violates the stipulations layed down for receiving those funds. We are firmly commited to maintin the security of Israel but we cannot tolerate every agreement being violated and the governments frantic attempts to bring about irreversible demographic and geographic changes on the ground.

If Obama cannot even get Israel to stop settlement construction, including east Jerusalem, for a few months, then there is no point in beginning. He will only fail, as all before him have done. We have had a lot of peace plans and several peace prizes awarded, but we have no peace and have never even been close. The peace agreements between Israel, Egypt, and Jordan are a product of American annual payments. Israel profits by avoiding peace and has been made into a monster by America. America deserved most of the credit for Israels inequities.
