Israel's Titanic moment: Does Obama want Bibi's head?

With Hamas at the gates of J'lem, the U.S. has begun to treat the Netanyahu gov't as if it were Hamas.

JERUSALEM - Hamas has designated this day, in this place, its Day of Rage. Why, then, the smiles on the faces of Mahmoud Zahar and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

Perhaps it's because after more than 22 years of costly trial and error, Hamas has finally come upon the secret of how to bring down the Jewish state:

Let the ship sink itself.

This month, down here in the engine room of the Titanic, a single coherent order continues to sound from the officers shrouded in fog on the bridge: "More power!"

To the delight of Mahmoud Zahar and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Israel's homemade weapons of mass destruction - pro-settlement bureaucrats with conflicts of financial and ideological interest - have done in one meeting what Israel's foes have sought for generations: driving a stake through the heart of Israel's relationship with the White House. We should have known. But in the swamp of anomaly and impossibility that is Jerusalem, you can easily lose sight of, and belief in, the basics:

One of the curses of endless war, is the tendency to become one's own worst enemy - in every sense.

Forget, for the moment, the parallels with Iran. Forget, also, that Ahmadinejad would like nothing more in life than to focus Muslim anger and Western displeasure on Israel's policies in Jerusalem.

Consider, instead, that with Hamas literally at the gates, Israel is not only doing the Islamic Resistance Movement's bidding - Washington is beginning to relate to the Netanyahu government as if it were Hamas.

Israelis woke on Tuesday to an Army Radio report that George Mitchell had abruptly cancelled his scheduled visit to Israel, and that the U.S. Mideast envoy would not resume his discussions with Jerusalem until Israeli leaders agreed to three conditions set by Washington - an uncomfortably familiar echo of the U.S. position on contacts with Hamas.

One focus of debate in Israel was the question of how an insulted and incensed Obama administration preferred to see the imbroglio turn out. Specifically, is the president after Benjamin Netanyahu's head?

Judging from the administration's responses thus far, it appears far more likely that what the president would like to see laid low is not the Netanyahu government's head, but rather the part that often verbally functions as its butt end - specifically Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu party and Interior Minister Eli Yishai's Shas.

In the current Israeli political constellation, these two men, and these two parties - a volatile alliance of ultra-secular Russian-born immigrants and ultra-Orthodox sabras with roots in the Muslim world and the Mediterranean - are the effective veto both to the peace process as a whole and to a settlement freeze of any substance.

They represent a total of 26 of the 61 Knesset seats needed for a Netanyahu majority. More crucially, they are the primary roadblock to the entry of the centrist Kadima party, which at 28 seats is larger even than Netanyahu's ruling Likud.

Obama, whose math and history skills are as good as anyone's, knows both that Israeli government concessions are a near-monopoly of the center-right Likud. It is thus reasonable to assume that the president would like to see a Netanyahu-led coalition anchored by Kadima and Labor, whose 68-seat cushion could allow for the inevitable resignations of "rebel" Likud backbenchers.

For the time being, however, Lieberman and Yishai are enjoying the kind of shadenfreude that Hamas, for its part, has been trying not to make obvious. All three are the beneficiaries of a campaign by rightist Israeli activists which has seen trouble-making become a goal in its own right.

The Holy City, meanwhile, has the held-breath wariness of a fuse whose end had been lit, but whose other end was not in sight. For some on the right, there was evident relish in the situation, and not a little pride.

In one of the more remarkable, and ill-advised, editorials in its 77-year history, the Jerusalem Post poured oil on the smolder this week, rewriting Jewish history and tradition to declare that the newly dedicated Hurva synagogue in the Old City, "symbolizes, perhaps more than any other site, the Jewish people's yearnings to return to its homeland."

The piece is an extraordinary example of internal logic, and an indirect confirmation of fundamentalist Islamic fears of hopes to encroach on the Muslim shrine of Al Aqsa for the ultimate purpose of building a third Jewish Temple. Referring to the literal meaning of the Hurva, the editorial goes on to state that "To name something that is built a 'ruin' reveals a stubborn unwillingness to accept the present reality as unassailable."

What US does or does not do vis-a-vis Israel and elsewhere is irrelevant or very soon will be - it is a failed state running multi-trillion dollar deficits, with 48 states insolvent and its industrial base gone(shipped to China) Try to understand Burston; it is kaput, finished, finito! We are all awaiting the final act complete with the economic implosion, hyperinflation, bloody chaos and break-up. Why do you think Obama was "elected" - to serve as a scapegoat for the ruling elite, who know that the game is up and like the fact that not only he's not one of them but does not look like them. Let the mobs go after that stuffed suit with Hussein middle name

Obama won "Waterloo" of health care

Rumors of The President's political death have been much exaggerated. PM Netanyanhu seems to have tied himself to the Republican Party, and The Party of "No You Can't" lost what it called the political Waterloo of health care reform. Quick note: the US has tried since President Truman to pass something approaching Israel's health care system, but Republicans have insisted each time that health reform leads to Stalinist gulags. The President doesn't care about details of Israeli politics, but deeply wants a foreign policy based on alliances and international consensus. The Republicans have insisted that the US ought to be a world empire, or "single point of world power". Thus, Bush II invaded Iraq with support from no one except Britain's Blair. Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld expected that the US military would overpower each middle eastern government in a benign domino effect. Obama is undoing this nonsense.

In all that time Americans in diaspora NEVER gave up their claim on their homeland and constantly talked of the fabled WHITE HOUSE times .... Now they got their land back and everywhere the DIG UP THEIR HISTORY..500 to 600 years after the end of U.S.A. #2 a squatter people OCCUPIED American soil.Hence Squatters' PLIGHT.

It is interesting for an American to read Haaretz. - President Obama does not care enough about Netanyahu to want to "bring him down" - The President worries about wars in Afganistan and Iraq, to which the entire US ground force has been tied for seven or eight years. Israel is irrelevant to both struggles, except when the Israeli government does something encourages terrorists to "commit martydom acts" against US troops. That's called recruitment. - If any Israeli thinks PM Netanyau is more polular than President Obama, take a deep breath of fresh air. Americans don't know who is PM, and probably most would answer Ben Gurion, or "that heroic woman", or Ariel Sharon. Tell us the PM is "Bibi" or "Zippy", and we laugh. Americans just don't follow foreign politics that closely. - Claim that President Obama has lost his base, and you have been listening to too much Murdoch "news".

    • 20:24

Hello Miggy... You're wrong... I know full well what's going on in East Jerusalem. And yes... it's despicable and discriminatory. What I was talking about... is how this conflict is characterized in religious terms, where in reality it is a struggle between Israelis and Palestinians. Both sides have responsibilities that they don't live up to. Now... East Jerusalem, as you know Arafat... at Camp David, could have had an agreement. For what ever reason... he refuse an arrangement. And now Palestinians in E. Jerusalem are not citizens of either state... not even their own. Hence Palestinian ID's and no right of return after 6 months. The fact that they are denied services... is also a consequence of Fatah's corruption and incompetence. About Judeazation of East Jerusalem, what I find odd... is that nobody ever talks about new apartment blocks being built in the vicinity of Mecca or its Islamization. And you know what, to most Israelis... Jerusalem is Mecca. Cheers...

Or rejuvenating synagogues etc. A more apt and important aspect as an example: Do we Israeli/Jews get offended when the Christians go through the VIA DOLOROSA with great pomp and circumstance? That is the beauty of the free Jerusalem for all including the Muslim's [big share] undeservedly may I add. Because I was under the impression Judaism "THE TRUE FAITH" came at least 1.500 + years before Islam was even dreamed of. So should "WE"Jews or Islamists object to the Christians who come during their HOLY DAYS TO Jerusalem to worship freely? I think not.

"erasing Jewish self-determination from the planet?" Jewish Self-determination will eventually be seen as narcissistic if it is at the expense of another people on the same land. eventually. Self-determination is a powerful idea. Indeed, it has shown how quickly Jewish community has risen after the events of Holocaust. But make no mistake, once the "self-determinaton" becomes blind, as it has in the minds of Zionists, it leads to apartheid, like it is currently. Israel needs to take on a higher road now. Forget the arab dictatorships, they won't dare attack a secular state that includes Israel-Gaza-West Bank, backed by US.

The Worst Crisis in 35 Years?
    • Daniel Pipes
    • 17.03.10
    • 20:39

March 17, 2010 Cross-posted from National Review Online http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2010/03/the-worst-crisis-in-35-years On the surface, that the Obama administration decided one fine day to pick a fight with the government of Israel looks like an unmitigated disaster for the Jewish state. What could be worse than its most important ally provoking the worst crisis (according to the Israeli ambassador to Washington) since 1975? A closer look, however, suggests that this gratuitous little spat might turn out better for Jerusalem than for the White House. (1) It concerns not a life-and-death issue, such as the menace of Iran's nuclear buildup or Israel's right to defend itself from Hamas predations, but the triviality of the timing of a decision to build new housing units in Israel's capital city. Wiser heads will insist that White House amateurs end this tempest in a teapot and revert to normal relations. (2) If Obama et al. hope to bring down Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government, they can't count Knesset seats. Peeling away Labor will lead to its replacement by rightist parties. (3) An Israeli consensus exists to maintain sovereignty over eastern Jerusalem, so provoking a crisis on this issue strengthens Netanyahu. (4) Conversely, U.S. histrionics make the Palestinian Authority's Mahmoud Abbas more reluctant to enter into Washington's counterproductive negotiations. (5) A recent poll of American voters shows an astonishing 8-to-1 sympathy for Israel over the Palestinians, so picking a fight with Israel harms Obama politically ? precisely what a president sinking in the polls and attempting to transform one-sixth of the economy does not need.

The justified ire of the Obama administration with Israel is also stoked by the fact that Netanyahu chose to insult biden and derail the 'indirect' talks at a critical moment when Obama is fully engaged in getting congress to pass the much awaited health bill, that will determine where his administration is heading. Israel has undermined Obama, and you do not have to be an 'anti-semite' to have a long memory and take care of your adversaries. Yes, Obama should consider Netanyahu and his government as adversaries who will sabotage his agenda to broker a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It is not a matter of wanting his head. Once the president is not occupied with passing the health bill he should teach the Israelis as well that there is a price to pay for double crossing the US.

Sacrifice the Golan and keep Eretz Yisrael. A great deal. The Golan is not part of historic Eretz Yisrael (where the 12 tribes dwelled), but is merely a high-ground which, nowadays, with missiles and some electronic listening stations, can be given back to Syria safely. Indeed, Generals Rabin and Barak, along with NETANYAHU himself (in his previous incarnation as PM) promised it to Syria in return for peace. Once the peace initiative with Syria starts, criticism of Netanyahu will stop in Israel and abroad (from the left), and he will become a heroic figure. I used to be a moderate supporter of Israel (support of Israel's right to exist, while respecting Palestinian refugees), however, at this point I'm incensed. It's obvious that Hamas is a reckless body, but Israel is the one in control of the area via occupation. The power dynamic places the onus on Israel to be the one to control the direction of the peace agenda. Everytime, however, peace is brought up Israel places so many pre-conditions and takes so many backwards steps (settlements) that I just can't support this anymore. If Israel ever wants peace, it is in their power to obtain it. Stop expecting unconditional American support, because it won't be there soon if this continues.

It certainly is not "rumour and innuendo". Palestinians (both Christian and Muslim) are loosing out bigtime in East Jerusalem. They are 35% of the population and get 10% of the services. There is blatent discrimination. They have no citizenship or travel rights. They are not allowed Israeli passports, they get what's called "Jerusalem ids". (Jewish citizens get Israeli passports). If Palestinians with these "Jerusalem ids" leave East Jerusalem for more than 6 months at a time they have no right of return. I met a Palestinian in Bethlehem who was born in Jerusalem about 10 miles away and he is not allowed to go there, hasn't been there for years. It is a slow process to Judeaize East Jerusalem and they are getting there in forcing the Palestinians out. It's called the 20/20 plan. 20% Palestinian population by 2020.

Hamas' "logic" is much like Pakistani "logic" against India--both think the other will fall from within, and both fail to realise that their hate-based positions are tenuous and will lead to their own collapse (in case of Pakistan, revealed in 1971 and especially post-1977 when a war-criminal tyrant set in motion a process leading to the rest of Pakistan also in danger of collapse). In the case of Hamas, they also have the additional burden of divine proscription ("Palestinians" are largely descendants of Moabites, Edomites and Ammonites--all three groups divinely proscribed from EVER AGAIN setting up a nation/kingdom).

And before you laugh at the analogy consider this- his whole aim is to stay in shape - pushing him one way and he will bulge out and then return to shape - he just floats around reacting to the environment but without actually initiating anything as he engages in his perpetual battle not to let all of the hot air out at once, without futting off into oblivion.

Bradley, I suspect that the Israeli government has been self-destructing for some time. In my experience, whether it be in the home, at work or across the globe, if mission critical issues become undiscussable, the fester and "silence like a cancer grows". From Ben-Gurion: If I were an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure, God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, it's true, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been antisemitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? They may perhaps forget in one or two generations' time, but for the moment there is no chance. So, it's simple: we have to stay strong and maintain a powerful army. Our whole policy is there. Otherwise the Arabs will wipe us out.

Perhaps it is time for the Likud to stop offering the lie that we can hold onto the territories and remain the sort of society that we want to live in. It is time for Bibi and Livne to be honest to their voters who want a secular democratic state with a Jewish majority and to realise that the purse demographics are working against them and against the sort of Israel that has a future. The religious extremists on both sides both ours and the Palestinians breed four to five times as far as the slim secular majority. If we do not act soon peace will be impossible. Nobody wants to give any of our land away, we all believe that Jerusalem is our eternal capital - some of us are intelligent that right is not smart or sustainable, that no Palestinian leader will ever give up on both the right of return and East Jerusalem, and that we have to stop having our relations with the world determined by the bouncer who masqerades as a foreign minister and the octogenarian distorter of Judaism

Gen. David H. Petraeus could never have been more right. The unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the source of current instability in the Middle East and the principal motivation of Islamic terrorism elsewhere in the world including in our country the Philippines. Unless the Israeli people renounces the self-destructive politics of its far right politicians, Israel may soon find itself at the brink of extinction with no sympathy from the rest of the world. Lest Israel forgets, it is the sympathy of the world that has allowed its people to rise from the holocaust and to found a nation against all odds in a hostile region. Unfortunately, Israel is wasting away this capital with unnecessary arrogance inspired by extremists in its midst. Israel must soon be a citizen of the world for its own sake.

David - did you accuse others of arrogance at the same time as saying that you have a grand plan of erasing Jewish self-determination from the planet? Very good, David. Very well thought through. So you think that a magic wand can be waved and all the Jihadists will suddenly turn to democracy, happy to live alongside Jews? And your precedent for this Arab tolerance would be what? West Bank? Lebanon? Syria? Gaza? Do you see any Jews living there? So you think that East and West Germans, separated for a few brief years but essentially one people, can be equated to Jewish Israelis and those Palestinians who consider school-bus martyrdom as the preferable negotiation tactic for removing all Jews? It's bizarre, the nonsense and childish drivel that Haaretz will publish on this talkback (and that's aside from the bare Jew hatred they let through the filter).

I am not religious... not by a long shot. But what I find offensive, is that Hamas can proclaim... in religious terms 'defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque' or a 'day of rage'. And after Friday night prayers young Muslim boys assault the streets with their rage or violence... based on pure rumor or innuendo. But Jews are held accountable to a rejuvenation of their Synagogue... as if this is an insult to Palestinians and their religious rights. The re-dedication of the Hurva Synagogue is in the old Jewish sector of Jerusalem... what religious right does this infringe on Moslems, anyway. I'm not certain, if religious ceremonies and their language can be toned-down... at least for the sake of co-existence. But I guess that's not the way things work in Jerusalem or the religiously infused middle east.

Dear Cowboy. The power that you ask about comes from from from soul, mind & brain. Soul that gave the world the both Testaments & Holocost, mind that gave it rational modernity & brain that bestows on the same world its achievements. For Winston Churchil it was Athens, Rome & Jerusalem that that laid down the foundation of Western civilization. For you it is a page from the high school textbook of science or history You were never able to understand. . This power also comes from what Einstein attributed to Jews as independence , love of knowledge & striving for fairness. You have neither of them. Otherwise, You would not post Your blog. The number of Jews in Israel are slighly above 6 million. Not 7,5. The world is not preoocupied with Israel. Antisemits are. In political & military sense Israel has no power at all. China has, Russia has but not Israel. Nonetity as You are, You are part of most powerful nation & whence You power comes. Jews have it in them.

Hamas is the main reason that peace is not possible between Israel and the Pals. Now that America's restraining power on Israel has been removed, Israel may well complete that mission next time and the USA can not be blamed anymore for aiding Israel.and America and the EU will attain their goal of peace in the ME, without the danger of nuclear devices smuggled into their cities by Hamas.

Israel, unfortunately, is planting the seeds for it's own demise. Somewhere down the line, it is going to be seen more and more as aggressor. The younger generation in the US, the university students, has views much different than the older generation. And rightly so. Only solution that will work requires a compromise. I think two state solution is vaguely similar to the east and west germany scenario. One state solution is a the real solution, where the compromise is Israel letting go of the idea of it being a Jewish state. One state - including Israel+Gaza+west bank - needs to exist where all have equal right regardless of religions. And the constitution is so strong that whether Jews, Christians, or Muslims are the minority or majority, the rights are reserved The arrogance displayed at present time will lead to endless pain.

Israel's historical rights to the city have no more international value than if Spain claimed Sicily or South America only because they once ruled there. The only international legitimacy that Israel has is the United Nations partition resolution, like it or not. Everything else is open for negotiation,

Bibi's last name may have changed back to Netanyahu after his brother Yoni's heroic death during the rescue at Entebbe, but his ideology has not. Instead of Arafat's gang, we now face Hamas and their Iranian sponsors taking control of the land of Israel. We will build in ten months in Judea and Samaria because there is simply no sane alternative.

if soros is the man behind obama's curtain, and he is similarly the man behind streets curtain, does this not present a conflict of interest? failing that, surely a very heavy bias...the fact is, eric cantor is right. Obama is a left wing ideologue, who deeply believes in the palestinian narrative, as they have told it, from the mouths of close friends like khalidi, wright, brzezhinski, edward said etc... I think the obama admin and friends has really set things back. Clearly, obama is NOT a friend. Sure, the arabs have to feel like they are being treated fairly, but does that necessitate obama treating his close ally so poorly? It makes no sense, unless of course jesse jackson was right in paris in 08' in his open mic goof... if obama were really a fair friend, a racial healer, he would have already been to israel, not copenhagen. Tough love goes both ways, yet he only directs it at israel, his "friend". If he really wants peace, he better have lots of tough love for the pals and other arabs too, or he risks big problems. Connect the dots people, look at the last 10 months of subtle statements, the creeping innuendo, about loan guarantees(james jones), about security committments(clinton), the delays in weapons programs(f-22,f-35,gbu-29's), the obfuscations, the US embassy reopening in syria, turning a blind eye to hezbollah and its illegal weapons, verrry subtly using goldstone and his trumped up farce, etc..etc..all of it adds up to obama either really being anti israel as many are starting to see, OR he naively believes he can win over the arabs and still support israel. It wont work. On balance, israel has always had the moral high ground and still does, and THAT is what people hate.... obama should be calling out and standing up to the HATERS and anti west jihadist killers rather than stabbing his "friends" in the back to curry favour with the oil warlords. Wake up people, obama is not ushering in peace. It will end in disaster.

The United States understood that there was no building freeze in Jerusalem. Had they had good - will they would have accepted the Prime Minister's apology over the bad- timing of the 'Har - Shlomo' building announcement. Instead they tried to profit on it by humiliating the Prime Minister. They jumped in anger at their long- time friend and showed no understanding whatsoever. And this as they are perpetually silent about Palestinian Arab intransigence, incitement, violence etc. Even as all this was going on the moderate Abbas was cooking up a blood- libel about El- Aksa. So from the United States we did not get fairness, friendship we got the same one- sided rebuke and pressure which has been the Obama's signature relation to Israel.

The site on the shores of the Sea of Galilee is that of the Al Sinnabra palace, which was described by early Arab historians but whose precise location had long been unknown, according to Tel Aviv University, whose Institute of Archaeology led the recent excavations. Archaeologists dug up the site in the early 1950s but identified it as the ruins of an ancient synagogue, a theory that was questioned in 2002 by a University of Chicago expert who identified the site as that of the Al Sinnabra palace. First, to those that like to rail against Obama, please remember that when the President takes the office from the opposition party, he is almost ALWAYS re-elected, unless the economy is getting worse. So Obama will very likely be re-elected for a second term and his policies will continue for quite some time. The Obama administration knows that Bibi is constrained by his right-wing alies, who have no support abroad and a minority position within Israel. They would like to see this changed, and the current situation gives them a golden opportunity. They will push this in order to bring about some change in the Israeli government, whether Bibi standing up to these parties, or a new coalition, because they know that this is the only way to bring about a new policy.

Sorry, but this incident has awaken most Americas to rethink their position on Zionist Israel. Sorry to admit it, but it's been a slow spiral down. Israel you're ARE blowing it. I think Obama has an incident to justify the reassessment of US Israel relations. I hope he puts some teeth into forcing the current racist government to be more centrist. It's time for Israel to steer towards being a true democracy. Maybe if it treated all citizens equally and with respect, there wouldn't be the need for a separate State. On the other hand, it seems Israel Zionist are executing their own "final solution" strategy on an oppressed people.

I think everyone is missing a big picture here---this should not have been that big of a deal, but it is now the perfect opportunity for the White House to villify Israel, cut ties and take a neutral stance regarding Iran. Obama, like the rest of the world is afraid of Iran. By backing away from Israel, he gets away with leaving Iran up to France or Russia to handle, or worse, for Israel to face on her own.

Tell our president that you will not sit down to discuss anything with the arabs until they accept israel as a "JEWISH" state with Jerusalem as its capital. Until they accept this precondition there will be no point in discussing another arab state west of the jordan!

First, Israel has snubbed Saudi Arabia by not taking the Arab League initiative seriously. Second, While Israel is somewhat away from Iran, Saudi Arabia can not say the same. Thirdly, if saudi Arabia, with all their cronyism and theft of that lands resources are on the brink of being wiped out. All they need to do is make one more real mistake and prove they're on the cancer we call Israel's side and that should just about do it for them. Get real, Sabra. I would much much much prefer a world where Israel stays firm allies with the USA, than by getting into bed with the Chinese or another merging super-power. Most Israelis would agree with me. The USA is very popular for Israel, and most Israelis strongly identify with the founding principles of the USA. US foreign aid for Israel is a two-edged sword, for both the US and Israel. From Israel's perspective, it comes with a political price tag, as well as having a limiting effect on the Israeli arms industry to remain aligned with developing technologies of US military hardware, and not veer too far to seek alternative options "elsewhere".

This is not the time when World statesmen were seen embarrassed to shake hands with Bush (these images were highly unpopular throughout the entire world). Smell the 2010 air... Even though Israel is required to spend ALL of this money on US manufacturers; it's a fraction of what the US gives to other arab countries without these requirements. The leftists in the US has already chosen the arab propaganda side. US Jews and Evangelical Christians will always support Israel, and there are 5 X as many of us than coastal liberal losers. I agree with you and I don't agree with you. It is in Israel's interest to have in the long run a workable peace agreement with the Palestinians. There is no way that this is going to happen without some exchange of territory with them, and their ability to rule themselves without Israeli interference. So here, I disagree with you. But, in the CURRENT political and social climate of the region, I believe that there is no way in hell that hypothetical peace agreement forged between Israel and the Palestinian leadership (in the West Bank) is going to hold for any serious amount of time. Abbas the the PA is terribly unpopular amongst the people of the West Bank, and many see him and the PA as "corrupt" and as "puppets to the USA and Israel", be it true or not true. The PA will be toppled by Hammas or the Tanzim in the next elections, who will annul any agreements made. Peace needs the ripe environment to take hold. A forced peace agreement today is going to backfire terribly.

Mitchell going to Moscow, possibly via London indicates that the netanyahu coalition is been bypassed in return for the Quartet deciding on how the peace process will proceed. Durson: "Hamas just wants its land back" Indeed in the narrative of Hammas, she is indeed correct. The Hammas map of the world has no room for Israel, as it is an illegitimate entity in their eyes. And Hammas wants its land back. They are 100% frank and to the point regarding this matter. The green line is not a part of their intended border. Durson, do you deny this? Hamas doesn't. If you do, then you basically are living in your own fragmented misguided understanding of what is going on here. A quick Google Search found this link: http://www.mideastweb.org/hamas.htm If you are serious about understanding the facts of this region Natalie, I suggest, that since you are likely to distrust Israeli web sites as sources for information, you start by finding direct quotes and writings from Hamas leaders, as well as their official charter. Then do the same RE: the PA. Focus on reference to their views of Israel's continued existence (or lack of). I think you will be surprised.

It's a pity since dropping Shas and Israel Beiteinu for Kadima would be a giant step forward for a two state solution. However, it is what it is. Abba Eban used to say that Palastinians never failed to miss an opportunity. Looks like Israelis have elected the same course. Rather than fight the U.S. on construction in East Jerusalem, they could be pressuring the U.S. to get livable terms from Sayyed and Abbas. What a waste of leverage.

The five million American Jews form less than two per cent of the US population. Yet from within this tiny percentage, an even smaller percentage, AIPAC, is able to wield disproportionately huge influence. Why? Originally, the reason was based on Holocaust Guilt - that this oppressed people should have a homeland and unconditional US support to that end. Now, that has metastisised into an organization that with its money and political influence is able to influence every Congressional and Senate seat. All politicians are terrified of the consequences of not toeing its line. Thus we have the skewed US policy vis-a-vis Israel.

The world is wondering how a country as big as a city with a 7.5 million population has so much power in the world? Seems here in the U.S. that people are seeing a relationship. In fact, almost without exception the people who have driven the western world to the brink of economic collapse are supporters of Israel. All I can say is Oi Vey! Here in the U.S. these greedy warmongers and minority elite have shown more than one instance of bad judgement as regards the U.S. population as a whole. U.S. support for Israel is yet another mistake of many. What is operating in the background to make such a tiny rogue state so powerful I ask again? People are beginning to figure it out. Israel is its' own worst enemy and an enemy of the U.S. The history of spying, clandestine nuclear weapons, 60 years of lying, grandiosity, manipulation, and a disgusting propaganda machine are starting to add up. Even rejecting the Goldstone report written by a Zionist! Where does that power come from?

Jewish State must keep building and populating whole Jerusalem with Jews and Christians. Upon conclusion of Obamas one term(1 term president)next US president will uphold the special relation that US had(up until now) with only democracy in the ME, Israel. As for ahmadinejad, hams and other homicidal maniacs it does not take much for them to have smiles on their faces. Double standards applied to Israel by EU, UN and other archaic organization very often brings very happy smiles on the faces of perpetual evil...

Netanyahu & Yishai's stunt already hurt US regional policy and relations in many places around the world. It looks like Israel is running and/or dictating US foreign policy. And General Petraeus is right to be concerned. But this issue was bound to come up. When Israel decided to unilaterally violate the Geneva Conventions and unilaterally declared sovereignty over land acquired by conquest, the stage was set. It was wrong and illegal for Jordan to seize Jerusalem. And it is wrong and illegal for Israel to seize Jerusalem. The only legal, not-wrong way to achieve anything meaningful is to negotiate a deal where nobody gets everything. And everybody's rights are respected. Neither Yishai's not Netanyahu's head will do the trick. But Netanyahu flipping the finger at the US, yesterday, didn't help.

If he tries, he's looking at serious repercussions ref US diplomatic cover, finance, upgrade of EU ties, progress of the Goldstone report etc. He will not voluntarily relinquish personal power but is not strong enough to stand up to Lieberman, Yishai and the other extremist zealots on the right. Tzipi and Kadima offer him the only way out of the maze. It will be interesting to see how he goes about it, as it would take not just duplicity, which he has in abundance, but also wisdom and courage. Which I suspect are in rather short supply.

They may have discovered the secret elixir for turning American Jews into Republicans. The Netanyahu blunder was indeed clumsy, and the US is right to feel insulted. But it knew Israel was not changing its policy of building in Jerusalem. It has no problem with the PA going ahead with honoring a mass murderer of children right after Biden left. And with the US's escalating outrage, I can't help but thinking of the famous line from Macbeth: "Methinks the lady doth protesteth too loudly." Could it be the fix was in for sometime, and Obama was just waiting for the right moment to be "shocked, ... shocked" to do another quote from the movie "Casablanca?" Meanwhile, I'm betting the memorial in Israel promised to Russia to honor the Red Army's fight against Nazism will coincidentally be erected ahead of schedule.

First, thanks for taking the time to read my post. Second, I don't know enough to either agree or disagree with you about the US military being both "scoundrels" and "anti-semitic" (assuming I read you correctly). Third, the American public--or any "public," for that matter--usually respond to what they "believe" to be the case (even when it doesn't jibe with the facts). Fourth, #3 is why God created spin doctors. Again, thanks for your time.

After the second Lebanon War, Human Rights Watch reported about the human tragedies caused by the indiscriminate aerial bombing (and cluster bombs delivered in civilian areas) by the IAF. Human Rights Watch produced material evidence for all its claims. For this, the Human Rights Watch came under attack by AIPAC and several parallel powers and was branded as an anti-semitic, barbarian organization. Talks of Condie and Bush afterwards have put the Human Rights Watch further into the shit hole. This is the power of AIPAC in branding a honorable organization as a piece of shit and make everybody to accept or pretend to accept that. There is absolutely now way that AIPAC will sit through this one, they will fight backs and heads will roll, probably Obama's as well.

Google has been linking to Ha'retz & Ynet for the past few days on their news page. Hundreds of thousands, if not more, Americans have seen anti-US headlines from the newspapers, as well as anti-American sentiment in the comments section. I don't know if the average Israeli is aware of it, but the US sends Israel BILLIONS (yes, you read it- BILLIONS) of dollars worth of aid in cash and weapons (advanced weapons, ones that Israel might want/need to turn Iran into a parkinglot). So, with all this anti-US sentiment, the US people are wondering why, in a recession, we are sending so many resources to a country that apparently dislikes us. It's secondary that Israel's ultra-conservatives are starting to behave in ways that mirror the jihadi & the nazi- using both G-d & nationalism as excuses to kick "undesirables" out of their homes, purge the land of them, fence them in, etc. But most importantly, the phrase "don't bite the hand that feeds you" comes to mind

This 'crisis' was Israel's choice. The policy of humiliating American envoys, the Secretary of State and Vice-President was clear. It started when Bibi met Obama and came home bragging about how he skunked him. Some on these forums pointed out the insanity of the Netanyahu government's actions. The ultimate problem with the policy of total contempt rests in the relative positions of the two nations. Israel needs the USA and the USA doesn't need Israel. Which raises the question of what type men are running Israel if they cheerfully run America off? Is there a lunatic with his finger on Israel's button? Or just a petulant 13 year old delinquent?

His non-stop outreach to the Iranian regime, his cool response to baseless and inflammatory rhetoric by the Iranian President, his non-response to Palestinian rioting, and his outsized personal belligerent determination to strip East Jerusalem away not from Bibi but from Israel show his inner self--a radical New Leftist in a metrosexual natty sheep's clothing who lied barefaced to supporters of Israel during his campaign and is prepared without conscience to throw Israel under the bus while continuing to display infinite patience with Ahmadinejad and Hamas. There is no way that Obama and the other Western leaders are going to retract from their concrete demand of an unlimited stop to all further settlement expansion into the West Bank and East Jerusalem. And if Netanyhau gives in, his right-wing coalition will break apart in a matter of hours. Again, sorry to say, but whatever he is going to do, he is (political) toast.
