Israel razes West Bank caravan built after settlement freeze
Elon Moreh caravan set up as 'Zionist response' to freeze; forces dismantle foundations for 2 other buildings.
By Chaim Levinson Tags: Israel settlements Israel news settlement building IDFIsraeli security forces on Tuesday dismantled a caravan set up in the West Bank settlement of Elon Moreh, despite the government's declaration last year of a 10-month construction freeze.
This was the first time a structure built to contravene the settlement freeze has been razed.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in December that Israel would impose a 10-month freeze on construction in West Bank settlements, saying the move was a bid to restart stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.
Settlement building has been a key sticking point in U.S. efforts to restart Middle East peace talks; the Palestinians say they will not return to the negotiating table without a complete halt to construction.
After the caravan in Elon Moreh was built, residents held an event at which they called the construction an "appropriate Zionist response" to the settlement freeze order.
Security forces arrived before dawn on Tuesday and dismantled the caravan. They also destroyed the foundations of structures in the Kochav Yaakov and Kochav Hashahar settlements which were built in contradiction of the freeze order.
The security forces operated undisturbed, despite the expectation that the dismantling would lead to renewed protests against the freeze.
In response to actions carried out by the security forces, a committee of residents from the northern West Bank settlements released a statement saying: "The activities over recent days prove that [Defense Minister Ehud] Barak and Netanyahu understand that the resistance of the residents will not allow them to implement the freeze unless they sneak up like thieves in the night. That is the only time to fight wars, to disrupt actions being taken out against terror organizations."
Settlers, government at odds over new school buildings
Jewish council leaders in West Bank and the government, meanwhile, are now in the midst of another row over construction of new school buildings in time for the coming academic year.
According to Ministry of Education projections, Jewish students in the West Bank will need 116 new classrooms when the school year starts in September 2010 if schools are to cope with the growing settler population.
Instead the defense ministry will allow only 28, to be built to strict guidelines, which settlers say are a result of commitments made by Defense Minister Ehud Barak to the United States.
News of the restrictions has reinflamed tensions between the settler movement and Barak's ministry, just as the two sides seemed to be reaching an accommodation. In the past few days settler leaders have begun lobbying Barak and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intensively in an attempt to overturn the decision.
Meanwhile, the head of the Samaria Regional Council, Gershon Mesika, has turned to the State Comptroller to request an investigation into Barak's handling of the dispute.
"The reality is," wrote Mesika to Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss, "that 88 kindergartens, schools and other educational institutions - which comprise 76 percent of the quota set out by the Ministry of Education - will not be completed in 2010, with the result that thousands of students will be unable to complete their studies in accordance with national education law. Some will be unable to begin the school year at all."
"This policy is a clear contradiction to both cabinet rulings and declarations by the prime minister that the construction freeze will not affect public buildings and especially educational institutions," Mesika continued.
"Worse still, the defense minister is riding roughshod over national education law, preventing the education ministry from fulfilling its obligation to provide the required standard of tuition to thousands of students. It is an abuse of the human rights of the children concerned."
The council leader went on to accuse Barak of sacrificing education for the sake of personal political ambition. "We cannot escape the conclusion that the defense minister's cruel and reckless behavior is politically motivated, when it is clear that the ill-advised ruling.

take all the settler children, and their parents, and move them back to israel where there's no restrictions on building schools, homes, etc. it's as simple as that. and there's an added benefit of beating the rush...which is destined to be coming soon.
All a PR campaign/marketing stunt by Israel
"This was the first time a structure built to contravene the settlement freeze has been razed." Only the phrase used in the paragraph before it was: "Israeli security forces on Tuesday dismantled a caravan set up in the West Bank settlement of Elon Moreh," So, which was it? Was it "razed", or was it "dismantled". If the former, well, congratulations on taking your first baby-steps. If the latter, well, what is "dismantled" can be "put together again" the moment the media's back is turned. Heck, you could turn it into a daily ritual which would do wonders to the "dismantled count" but will still only represent a single, solitary caravan.
for playing their part in this made for suckers piece of marketing. Meanwhile work at the main illegal settlement blocks (I like that term) continues apace. Some reports put the increase at 20 to 25 % As usual one cannot believe one word Israel has to say---too mnay reasons not to.
There is a dire need for classrooms for Arab children in East Jerusalem. Since they insist of a "United Jerusalem", perhaps for once they could transfer this stymied enthusiasm for building to that area were it is badly needed ! In case they don't notice - there IS "natural growth" there, too. David
NO to razing. Israel should continue to build and build. Just because the dark forces-Pagans make noise it does not mean Israel has to grovel to them.
So, after all the noise and fuss - after all the promises and threats of action - what do we have? What do we show our greatest ally and most important friend to whom we pledged a 10 month freeze? One lousy caravan removed? We have become a joke as well as an embarrassment. We are known as those who do not keep their promises, who know only how to vacillate. We the so-called major military regional power are shown to be wimps. It would be more honest of the Defence Minister to stop his verbal bravado and the Prime Minister to cease his roaring rhetoric to come clean: ?We Are Not Going To Freeze Settlement Activity. We Are Not Going To De-Occupy.? We are already a pariah state, at least we could be an honest one.
The Israeli government seems to have slowed down or stopped trying to enforce the construction on the settlements, but if they could demolish all the outposts it would be a very big deal for the Palestinians... Cheers.
do you realy call "erasing" the remouving of a trailer? you must be joking
At last SOME action, to put substance to words about the desire for peace. At last soms willingness to curb the settlers, who have taken Israeli politics hostage. At last some inclination towards respecting the rights of the Palestinians on their own lands. How long will it last?
"The young know the Land is theirs and will fight" Fight as much as they like, the land is Palestinian and clearly the government of Israel itself realises this as it is sending the IDF to destroy illegal outposts!
I hope it is the first step, not a feint. Salaam/Shalom
Civil War is coming to Israel if anyone thinks they can cede Judah to Arabs for a handshake. The young know the Land is theirs and will fight. If the IDF think they can stop building in Judah then they have better be able to defend every building site in Israel. Real war with faithful Jews is what the Defeatist are going to get.
Still, good to see the government of Israel enforcing at least this much! A good start...
Wow, they dismantled a whole caravan! What we expect now is lots of protests on this site that any action by Jews is automatically legal, that this is terror, that the government of Israel consists of self-hating Jews motivated by antisemitism ... And meanwhile on the ground a few Palestinians are beaten up, a few more mosques burnt, hundreds more olive trees cut down by those peace-loving settlers. This is because the government of Israel loves the Palestinians so much that that will make them change their mind. We know the script, come on now: play your parts! And never mind what you're doing to Israel.
