By TheMarker and Lior Detel Tags: Israel newsIsrael ranks 32 out of 180 on the list of the world's corrupt countries, according to a study released by the International Transparency Organization on Tuesday.
The ranking is one spot lower than last year's, apparently due to the election of a new government and the incarceration of former ministers Shlomo Benizri and Abraham Hirchson.
In 2007 the country was ranked 30, and in 2006, 34 - the lower the ranking, the more corrupt a country is considered to be.
The study defined corruption as misuse of a position of public influence to further one's personal interests.
According to the study, Israel has been on a fast and steady decline since the the ranking began in 1997. Then, Israel was considered among 15 countries with the least amount of political corruption.
The ranking is based on a grade which combines data from 13 questionnaires, executed by 11 different research centers. The results are based on the answers of 28,000 business people and experts from Israel and abroad.
According to the final results, Israel ranked the same as Spain, with both countries receiving the grade 6.1. This put it ahead of the Dominican Republic, Portugal and Puerto Rico (35), Botswana and Taiwan (37). Some of the countries ranked lower than Israel include Poland (49), Italy (63), China (79), Syria (126) and Iran (168).
According to the study, News Zealand, Denmark, Singapore and Sweden are the least corrupt countries in the world, while Somalia, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Sudan are considered the most corrupt countries in the world.
This is the first time New Zealand, graded 9.4, has been ranked as the country with the least amount of corruption in the world, followed closely by Denmark with the grade of 9.3.
The United States ranked 19, just after Britain, which came in at 17.

Don't know how Israelis feel about being ranked #32, but i know Singapore deserves to be among the top 3.
For your info.
nr32 least corrupt, what an achievement to have 31 countries who are less corrupt. What a shame! What would be interesting to see is how efficient we are in comparison to other countries. Our administration, whether governmental, non-profit or commercial, is absolutely horrible. Most of our clerics are not qualified to their job and are totally not capable into logical thinking. So forget about corruption, do first something about the efficiency of our administration. How more efficient we are in handling administrative requests how better we will be in tackling the corruption.
I used to live in a country in South America which, a few years back, was designated as "the second most corrupt country in the world." Did they sweat it? Not at all; the following joke immediately circulated: "Hey, look at that--we're the first runner-up!"
It seems the reason the USA ranked low is because of lack of financial transparency on Wall Street. "Buyer Beware." There are a lot of greedy crooks on Wall Street, mafioso of the upper classes. You have to be careful in investing. Also, the problem is that they don't think enough or much is being done to correct the problem. Like the Madoff problem, don't trust your money to someone else; you have to do your own homework. How many people lost money in the stock market or to Bernie Madoff, raise your hand.
And don't forget its history of Huey Long. Ohio was corrupt because Gen. Grant of Civil War fame put his friends in high places; this spread to Illinois as well I think. A few more states are more corrupt than Illinois, although it still is in the top. There is favoritism in Chicago and Illinois as to who gets jobs. Although it is better in the USA than in Russia. Russia is still in the bottom. You have to realize where we came from (Russia, maybe some Jews just came from Iran also - so USA is better to us and for us than these failed states on the bottom).
Does anyone reading this article feel soothed by the fact that there are 150 countries more corrupt than us? Israel should be at the top of the list of non-corrupt countries. Anything less should cause us, the citizens of the country to demand changes in our government to remove corruption. (As to our movement up the list due to Benizri and Hirshezon, has anyone forgotten the former Prime Minister and the fact that his removal from power causes a significant decrease in the country's corruption? Or does the fact that he was a leftist give him immunity? You decide.)
So where is Finland ,Finland is the least corrupted country in the world!!
i wonder what Rod Blagojevich has to say about the states only being 19th place...
Syria (126) funny
