Israel marks 36th anniversary of Yom Kippur War
At ceremony in Jerusalem, Deputy Defense Min. speaks of IDF troops' bravery in repelling 1973 assault.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Egypt Israel news IDFIsrael marked on Tuesday the 36th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, one of the most costly and traumatic conflicts in the country's history.
At a state ceremony at Israel's national cemetery on Mount Herzl, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai (Labor) spoke of the bravery of the Israel Defense Forces soldiers who repelled the assault.
"Whoever fought in the tough battles in the [Suez] Canal and the Golan Heights is well aware that it was not the wisdom of leaders but the heroism of warriors in the battlefields that saved the State of Israel," he said.
A coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria launched the war in a surprise attack on the Jewish holiday in 1973.
More than 2,600 Israelis were killed in the hostilities, which had far-reaching effects on Israel and the entire Middle East.
Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin also attended the ceremony, during which a cantor recited the Hebrew prayer of mourning El Malei Rachamim.
Vilnai added: "The Yom Kippur War is going further and further away... [but] the impression the war left on the state and on the army's preparedness is very deep."

I am an American Christian Zionist. To all the world, especially Persia today, "Do not touch the apple of God's eye Israel! The fulfillment of the prophecy of Ezekiel 38, 39 is soon to come to pass. Israel, be at peace! Shalom!
a Hebron settler calling others "brainwashed". Look in your backyard and you will see BRAINWASHED! Next, read some history books, Tarik may have a different version of the Israeli history but it's not completely false. Egypt did, in fact, attack Israel after attempting a peace agreement in exchange for their land back. Sadat was a great leader and should be remembered as a man of Peace. Time for us Israeli's to learn from our past mistakes.
Gen.Zeira ,Chief of Military Intelligence was maintaing to the last moment arabs wouldn't attack. Whatever feeble last moment preparations had been made was against his assuring advices. On learning about the attack he left his office never to return.
Israel was the occupier. Is one not allowed to attack an occupier. Oh I forgot---only in Israel are the laws of war---suspended for the benefit of the light unto nations. attacking the occupier on Occupied territories is only a no no if someone else is doing it. Israeli hypocrisy has no bounds---same as the state of Israel---in their minds.
Israel was aware something was up. But after the mistaken preemption of 1967, the leaders of Israel did not wish to risk US disapproval. France was no longer supplying Israel with combat aircraft and the loss of the USA as a source might have been fatal. The then President, Richard Nixon, though a pragmatist, was also a known anti-Semite. Because it preempted unnecessarily in 1967, the leadership was afraid to preempt in 1973 when it was justified. Thankfully it was not a fatal error. But it did lead to the end of Labor Zionist rule in Israel.
And adding young Israelis to the body count....
On Yom Kippur when most of Israel was sitting in synagogues and the soldiers were all on leave, Israel started a war. Your knowledge of Judaism and the Jewish state is sadly lacking. What is amazin that, with threats from both the north and south, Israel managed to snatch victory from apparent defeat, and could have -- if not stopped by the antisemitic powers in Europe -- walked into Cairo. The IDF was about 100 kms away when Sharon was called to stop.
if Arab muslims can carry out suicide bomb attacks in mosques during ramadan, nothing is sacred to these guys
"Had Israel not succeeded in stopping Arabs using conventional force it would have dropped a couple of nukes on both Cairo and Damascus and now we would be talking about these two aggressors in past term" Do you honestly think Israel would allow itself to become the first country since WW2 to use nuclear weapons? Much as I dislike Israel's treatment of the helpless Palestinians, I don't think it would ever have been that stupid...
Did Egypt 'stab Syria in the back' Chaim? Or did they actually harbor the same objective? The battle for the Golan was a VERY close run thing and it has always been a bit unclear why the Syrians did not swarm down off the Golan and into Israel. Perhaps they both had the same objective of seizing the essential territory lost to Israel in 1967. We do not know, too many secrets still are held in Cairo and Damascus. The war was well handled by the IDF, Syria stopped, and then Egypt dealt with. But aside from post-war speculation and prevarication's we do not know what the whole story was. But it must be born in mind that Syria was stopped first.
"In fact, no Egyptian soldier attacked Israel at the onset of the war. Egyptian soldiers attacked Israeli positions that were illegally occupying Egyptian territory in the Sinai." - Haaretz The Yom Kippur War led directly to the demise of the liberal Labor Zionist Israel and the rise of the right wing Revisionist Zionist Israel. This major shift led to massive and continuing expansion of settlements, the attempt to install a Fascist regime in Lebanon and all subsequent Israeli wars. They Yom Kippur War was the end - the very final end - to the threat of national annihilation by surrounding Arab states which had framed the first 25 years of Israeli existence. It led to an Israel more riven by fear than before, and one for the first time driven by dreams of expansion.
ively active. He couldn't restrain himself from disclosing last year the name of an Egyptian Israeli agent ,causing his death in Paris ,due to "suicide". Lessons of the Yom Kippur initial defeat are obviously not absorbed.
"In fact, no Egyptian soldier attacked Israel at the onset of the war. Egyptian soldiers attacked Israeli positions that were illegally occupying Egyptian territory in the Sinai." - Tarik Curious delusion you have Tarik. You should read the then Egyptian Information Minister's book 'the road to Ramadan' and get your delusions punctured.
No, Egypt saved both Syria and itself. Had Israel not succeeded in stopping Arabs using conventional force it would have dropped a couple of nukes on both Cairo and Damascus and now we would be talking about these two aggressors in past term.
If it was not for our forward artillery and holding the heights Israel would have been overrun by Syrian Armor in the North. We must keep the Golan and more importantly we must build up and support our mobile artillery units as they are crucial to Israel's defense.
If Egypt had not back stabbed Syria by lying to them about their true intentions than maybe the Arab ambush would have worked. The betrayal of the Egyptians against the Syrians allowed Israel to divide it's air force to the too needy fronts. Thank you Egypt for not only being cowardly but for being traitors to your own people as well!
Is that what they brain washed you with? Maybe read a book one day and learn what really occurred? Nah, than your friends won't talk to you anymore!
The armies of Egypt and Syria have only grown since 1973 and the reason being is that they are still hostile towards Israel. Israel will have to win another major war before there is peace.
Israel began the Yom Kippur War...
Cowardly arabs who attack Israel in most sacred day were defeated and ran like rabbits. And this lead to some of them to realize that would never destroy Israel and better to live with it at least with state of no war then to be kicked each time. This time Israel must make clear, it will not stop 101 km from aggressor capital. It will use ALL means without exclusions or limitations to annihilate the aggressor. Probably a couple of more will then again before attacking it.
there were a few lessons learned from the yom kippur war. one, the arabs don't observe the jewish holidays. second, holding on to areas captured in war will lead to conflict. building settlements in occupied land will provoke response, sooner or later. the arabs for their part could learn that not recognizing israel as a permanent state will cause them trouble permanently. teko.
the role of the reserves in the yom kippur war.the essay is actually wide ranging from the pen of the most well informed analyst of military affairs in israel.
who pushed for a mobile defense to guard the canal.they were right and those opposing them generals elezar and bar-lev were wrong.
it was manned by 442 reserves from the jerusalem brigade.thats it.442 inexperienced soldiers.that was the bar lev line.
rather it was the strategy.we thought we could leave 20000 men to guard against an invasion of 100000 egyptian troops who had one ambition.that was to grab a bit of land on the sinai peninsula.egypt well understood its limitations.
they went to the borders in both the south and the north with no warning whatsoever.they fought with passion and sacrificed themselves at the chinese farm at hermon and the brutal battles on the golan. the times of london called this one of the world's great military victories.israel coming back to win from a strategic surprise. the present children have brave forbears.israel need have no fear.

In fact, no Egyptian soldier attacked Israel at the onset of the war. Egyptian soldiers attacked Israeli positions that were illegally occupying Egyptian territory in the Sinai. More importantly, Egypt did so after repeatedly attempting to secure a land for peace deal based on the relevant UN resolutions. In 1971, Egypt offered Israel peace if Israel withdrew from the Sinai, and Israel rejected the offer, with Moshe Dayan famously proclaiming that Israel preferred "Sharm el Sheikh [in the Sinai] without peace to peace without Sharm El Sheikh". Israel's rejection of every attempt to resolve the occupation peacefully led State Department officials to remark that Israel was giving away its best opportunity for peace. This left Egypt with no other option to recover its territory. More importantly, Israel's poor performance in the war exposed its vulnerability and ultimately forced Israel to raise the importance of making peace, ultimately leading to the peace treaty later that decade.
