Israel forms task force to counter Goldstone Gaza report
Netanyahu had objected to holding internal probe, ordered panel to offer recommendations for legal action.
By Barak Ravid Tags: Goldstone report Benjamin Netanyahu Israel newsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday approved the creation of a task force of professionals who will present a series of recommendations for countering the Goldstone report and its implications.
The task force was coordinated by Minister Yaakov Neeman at Netanyahu's request. Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and Chief Military Prosecutor Avihai Mandelblit will comprise the task force, alongside the legal adviser to the Foreign Ministry and the Cabinet Secretary.
Netanyahu said earlier this week that the establishment of an independent committee of inquiry on Operation Cast Lead is not under consideration. "No soldiers or officers will be brought before a commission of inquiry," he said.
The team established in its place is to offer recommendations for actions that can be taken on the legal and diplomatic-political fronts, as well as on public relations efforts that can be made internationally.
"There are different views on the actions that we should undertake," said a source at the Prime Minister's Bureau. "What we will not do is clear and now we need to find something else."
But international pressure for Israel to set up an inquiry into allegations made by the Goldstone report to the effect that Israeli soldiers carried out war crimes in Gaza last winter has continued to mount.

It is ironic that you like to be sure that Palestinians know how danger they will get from fighting occupation but you don't want anyone else to know the truth. You like to kill children on Gaza and target UN schools to scare Palestinians and to give them a lesson but you like to appear innocent to everyone else .well welcome to the 21 century and internet where you only have the chance to show the same story to everyone. From now on if you want to target civilians be aware that it will be shown everywhere.
I thought the same thing. All Israel need to do is show some footage of Hamas firing from every civilian site in Gaza and the court will say "game over". But the Hague is politicized and will find Israel guilty no matter what evidence there is. Then what. As long as oil flows there will be no justice for Israel. When oil stops there will be no place in the world for the Arabs. We need to survive just 30 years longer.
Come on, people. The only "surefire" way to settle this issue is to let it go to the Hauge. Even the slowest village idiot can see that! If/when you win it's a done deal and you walk away with credability too. The way you people keep trying to deflect the issue makes the world think you have something to hide. Air this thing out and lets get it over with and move on.
I wonder what exactly PM Netanyahu means on the statement below; ""There are different views on the actions that we should undertake," said a source at the Prime Minister's Bureau. "What we will not do is clear and now we need to find something else." Ok, so its going to be a PR thing. Good luck.
The US congress is debating a resolution HR 867 to send to the State Dept and Excecutive Branch to call for a US veto of further discussion of Goldstone report at the UN. Even if the Goldstone Report is buried by the US at the UN, it won't remove from the world's memory what we heard and saw out of Gaza despite the press ban. That cannot be undone with vetos. Amazing our congress can find the time to raise resolutions to bury Goldstone, but can't pull it together to pass a resolution to get our troops and dollars out of Afghanistan or Iraq.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday approved the creation of a task force of professionals who will present a series of recommendations for countering the Goldstone report and its implications. " - Haaretz This is not going to help. Israel does not need to act as a guilty man does. It needs to act like an honest man. The nation is not accused of being guilty. The Goldstone report recommended that Israel investigate specific possible violations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel may prove it's national innocence only by open and honest investigation followed by appropriate judicial actions or courts martial. If Israel continues to see this as a public relations problem it will only serve those who wish to make the actions of a few an indictment of a nation. Indeed, Israel is in danger of becoming an accessory after the fact. A entity which knowingly aids a guilty party in evading justice.
First attack the man Goldstone now counter the report. I think the honest man made a solid balanced report. It is hard to counter the content. This new tactic surely makes Israel look guilty.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday approved the creation of a task force of professionals who will present a series of recommendations for countering the Goldstone report and its implications." A "task force of professionals," indeed- a force composed of professional prevaricators and fact-twisting spinmeisters. These "professionals" will undoubtedly be masters at "countering" truth with cleverly worded, meandering fictions and sophistical feints and parries. Bibi's hand-picked pros will be tasked with drawing public attention away from the Goldstone Report's obvious "implications." He's got a large and tremendously qualified pool of Israeli bureaucrats and officials to choose from, I'm thinking. They're handling these kinds of situations all the time.
If nothing else, it is a pleasure seeing "Bibi" squirm. David
Who do you question if not the soldiers, the only other people there were Gaza people, Hamas and UN/Aid workers. Without questioning of soldiers, report will go to ICC, since this is about the actions of IDF only the soldiers have some of the answers.
you've got to hand it to Bibi and his ilk. What they keep forgetting is that the cover-up is what eventually gets them. It never fails. Time and time again when officials try to keep the lid on something they did or authorized, something that turned out to be ugly, they think that it will go away if they just come up with some sort of "task force." It never does. Right now, Israel is accused of war crimes and even crimes against humanity. Hard to figure out how low can it get. Poor Bibi, he ain't as smart as he thinks he is. Too bad for Israel.
