Israel embassy sets U.K. a-Twitter over 'second Dubai hit'

Tweet of Israeli Tennis player's 'hit on Dubai target' comes amid rising storm over Hamas assassination.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel Mossad Israel news

Already under fire over the Mossad's alleged role in an extra-judicial killing, Israel's diplomats on Friday risked criticism on grounds of taste over a message posted by their U.K. embassy on Twitter.

According to a report in theU.K. newspaper The Guardian, a tweet issued by the embassy on Thursday read: "@israeluk You heard it here first: Israeli tennis player carries out hit on #Dubai target http://ow.ly/18A79".

The message, which linked to a story on Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer's victory in the third round of a Dubai tournament, was an apparent double-reference to the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai, widely believed to have been carried out by Israeli intelligence.

By Friday morning the 'tweet' had been removed from the site.

CCTV footage released by Dubai police shows the suspected assassins dressed as tennis players following Mabhouh into the hotel lift as a member of staff showed him to his room.

Mabhouh's death sparked a diplomatic row between Israel and the U.K. after it emerged that murder suspects forged the identities of British citizens living in Israel.

Israel has so far refused to comment on the killing. Summoned by the British Foreign Office to help 'clarify' the affair, Ambassador Ron Prosor said on Thursday he was 'unable to shed any further light on the events'.

Israel dressed their assassins as tennis players. Which means that all Israeli athletes are now to be assumed to be Mossad assassins. All Israeli athletes are at risk now. Congrats. The terrorists have won.

Russians killed one of your own citizens with a highly toxic radioactive material, potentially endangering the lives of hundreds of British citizens? You were nowhere! Where have you been all these years while your troops continue to kill civilians both in Iraq and Afghanistan? Nowhere. Where are you now by your twisted and perverted standards in the moral geography of the World? You do not follow the true moral north but the directions shown in your own personal compass, distorted by antisemitic disguised as anti Israeli immorality. You cannot swallow the idea of strong (arrogant???) Jews protecting themselves, using whatever means necessary in the light of the appalling behavior of the Int'l community waking every day to the sounds of a Country threatening to destroy Israel. Take a walk at Sheffield Park, beautiful day. Maybe the striking beauty of nature will give you some hints about morality. In the meantime, be a gentleman and cope with your own desperation, w/o rantings.

Your country does not your reports. You are saying and you are beliving what you've said. A poor preJewish postChrist guy that has hate to Jews and spewing his hatred in this forums. For days you are spewing your hatred and illusions that UK and the world would downgrade the diplomatic relations and kick out Mossad out of the UK. What has happend? Just NOTHING. You and I are here in this forums. I bet anything whatever you want %99 that there will be no downgradation in the relations. Aby Youre beatiful when you've got blue. Aby

While there is no way to know if you are really in England, no one who lives in England should talk about perfidy and assassinations. The English are the people who brought us expulsion of the Jews in the Middles Ages, invented concentration camps and raped and pillaged the world. Oh yes, and the only thing that Israeli and Palestinian historians agree upon is that the British made a hash of things while they were in "the Levant." So please, clean up your own house, get the hell out of Northern Ireland, give the Scottish and the Welsh the independence they crave and then come and talk to us, ok Jack?

so, apparently, a couple of overweight tennis-costumed bearded mafiosi are giving real tennis a bad name. maybe the mossad should have hired peer to carry out the deed, which she no doubt could have done, without needing 15 accomplices to murder one unarmed, unguarded man. OTOH, maye peer should sue the israeli embassy, which seems as hapless as it's country's hit-men, for giving Tennis a bad name. Or for bringing her bad luck. Why, she could have the tournament if not for the distraction! Yet, another thought - I trust it wasn't Israel's somewhat lackluster tennis assoc. that helped dress the murderers with appropriate garb. At the very least, they should have encouraged them to actually swing a racket and get on a treadmill, so as to look the part. Still, from the pictures of the mossad boss - who even looks the part of a Don, it appears that ship-shape is not a priority....godfather indeed. congrats israel for making it clear to olehs that their passport details could be farmed.

"EVERY government carries out assasinations!" - Michelle Prove it. I have no problem with the guy getting whacked. But your argument is absurd. Either it is absurd, or the vast majority of government intelligence agencies are far more competent at assassination than Mossad. The operation was so ridden with fingerprints and dropped clues that my first thought pondered if it was a false-flag operation intended to saddle Israel with the blame. Eventually the evidence piled up to the point where it was impossible to continue with that line of thought. The number of governments caught repeatedly engaging in international assassinations is pretty small Michelle. The real concern should be who was responsible for the Keystone Cops performance in Dubai, and who authorized it. For the Mossad to whack the guy is no problem with me. That they botch the job so totally should be a concern to every Israeli.

Living their lives in Europe was arragant, commiting the same sins as their neighbors, be it in business, labor, politics was arrogant. Now these freaks, who spend their time monitoring Israeli newspapers, totally ignoring the sins of terrorism and murder, still see Jewish arrogance- interesting!

For the UK to stay largely supportive of Israel as it bombed civilians to smithereens in Lebanon and Gaza in recent years, yet make a fuss about this incident shows you what a muddle their heads are in.

This story is a bit of fluff. Not a matter of monumental import. It is not, however, without some enlightenment. It shows a lack of common sense upon the part of the sender as well as bad taste. It is one in a series of Ministry of Foreign Affairs gaffs in recent weeks. It also discredits the accomplishment of a fine tennis player and the hospitality of the Arab nation which has allowed him to compete. Another self-inflicted wound by a thoughtless, reckless government.
