Israel border guards kill Israeli civilian trying to enter Gaza
Man, possibly mentally unstable, drove to Erez border crossing and ran toward border fence trying to scale it.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Gaza Israel newsThe Israel Defense Forces and Defense Ministry security guards shot and killed an Israeli civilian before dawn Monday as he tried to cross the border into Gaza at the Erez border crossing.
The man, in his 30s, arrived at the crossing at 2 a.m., parked his car, and began running toward the crossing into Gaza.
Troops registered the man on their security cameras, called out to him to stop, and when he didn't heed their calls, began firing warning shots. The man began scaling the border fence when he was shot and killed.
Police sappers were summoned to determine whether the man was carrying explosives, as the initial fear was that the man was a militant.
The man's motive was not clear.
"Guards ... identified a man running toward the crossing and trying to climb the security fence. They called on him to stop and fired warning shots in the air. When he did not heed their calls they fired towards his lower body," an IDF statement read.
The statement added that the man was an Israeli citizen and was "alleged to be mentally ill". It said he died of his wounds in hospital.
Israel bans all its citizens from going to Gaza. It also routinely denies passage to Palestinians wishing to enter or leave the enclave where 1.5 million Palestinians live under an Israeli blockade.
Tensions along the border are high. Palestinians who have approached the border fence in the past have been fired at by Israeli security forces and in some cases killed.

Sad for the man who wouldn't heed the warnings but, he forced their hand and lost. Moral of the story, 'don't gamble w/ your life."
to the pals? Either way, everyone knows NOT to rush a crossing area unless you want to die that day on either side of the border. How many has Egypt already shot and killed? Unfortunate but accurate.
REMEMBER?
You don't understand. This was a mercy killing. They wanted to prevent his falling into the cruel Hamas hands. David
"The RoE in that case is one of meeting deadly force with deadly force. If the rock-throwers were throwing flowers instead of rocks, I might agree with you" Michael, you and I stand facing each other. You have an M16 assault rifle and full combat dress and I have a large rock. We fire/throw. Who do you really think is going to be the one to die??
Since the standing orders for opening fire while on guard duty have been in effect since before I was a recruit 40 years ago, I see no reason to change them. You shout a warning to halt, fire in the air if there's no compliance and ONLY then do you fire at a person's legs to immobilize them. SOP in dozens of armies around the world for guarding borders and military installations. Firing on rock-throwers (many of whom use leather slings) has a different set of rules of engagement. Equating one to the other is comparing apples to oranges. Just in case you don't know it, people get injured and killed by thrown rocks. The RoE in that case is one of meeting deadly force with deadly force. If the rock-throwers were throwing flowers instead of rocks, I might agree with you. Maybe we should start by talking about your abysmal ignorance of military matters--or perhaps your liberal use of double standards?
Why to kill? why NOT!!! palis and the rest of arab sh**** have no rights in THE LAND OF ISRAEL! maybe in jordan or lebanon, but not in ISRAEL. ISRAEL FOR JEWS ONLY!!! just like germany for germans, sweden for impotent sweeds and the rest ... JERUSALEM IS UNDIVIDED just as berlin and paris and washington.Lets divede mecca.
It is not a reading problem it is a culture problem. Most people do not think it is ok to shoot at people who try to illegally cross a border. The civil way is try to arrest him before he crosses if that does not work warn the guys on the other side someone is comming. The irony is of course that this is how, often relatively harmless, Palestinians get killed.
the main point is you cant know if this man passed the border from gaza to israel hours before planted a bomb and now try to return to gaza they tried to capture him not to kill him... they cant know his motive when they cant capture him. or better if he is a 'jewish terrorist' who enter there and stab some arab kids and woman!! that could make a crisis for the critical cease fire between hamas and isr! and increase the terror attacks on isr so yes this is a big threat to israel too and shouldnt this be prevented?? maybe he was like teitel how do you know it. the main point is this person entered a military restricted area in all countries everyone knows that there is a major risk to be shot to death
I mean, only three million of Israelis (out of seven million population) travel abroad EACH YEAR. This is exactly like east Germany!
Your question is a valid one if you live in Belgium or Italy. Our neighbors declared us to be their enemies and closed their borders. Further, these hostile regimes routinely send people across the borders, snipe at us, send missiles across - you name it. Context is everything dude.
that Gaza also borders Egypt! Why does Haaretz continue to imply that Israel is the sole perpetrator of this blockade?
not a joint Israeli Egyptian blockade... typical
This incident reminds me of East Berlin where people trying to get out of the country by climbing the Berlin Wall were regularly shot and killed. It's a sad state of affairs when Israel starts to practice East German tactics.
Is that this person was trying to get out of Israel . Now , lethal force is authorized when immediate danger or threat to life and limb are confronted. Since the man scaled towards Gaza , how much of a threat does this man pose to the IDF soldiers??? Now , if the IDF is concerned about the man being captured by the Gazans as a hostage like some suggested , then why shoot and kill him? Is it better dead that being a hostage .? What kind of logic is that. Assuming that by the stretch of the imagination that the IDF is concerned about the "safety" of the Gazans from this deranged person and potentialy dangerous man, they can just shoot and the sounds will alert the Palestinians to the infiltration attempt and they would have dealt with the inifltration in anyway they see fit .Trigger happy IDF . They are judge , jury and hangman.
Kill anyone trying to go over the wall. Probably thought he was a Palestinian.
Shooting someone in the leg is not without risk. You have a big artery in your thigh, and if it's severed, you can bleed to death very rapidly. Of course, they could have shot him in the lower leg, but it's pretty hard to hit such a small moving target at a distance. A very regrettable incident, as are all shootings.
....talking about the (rather questionable) rules of engagement within the IDF, and not only in cases like this one. Honestly, I'm not aware of many countries on this planet, where soldiers are allowed to regularly use lethal force against (stone- throwing) children.... ....are you...???
Unfortunately, the shooting hit a main artery in his leg.
They first yelled at him to stop, then aimed for the legs, and when all this was ignored they shot to kill. I also haven't heard a peep out of any of you when Egypt kills African refugees trying to cross the border into Israel. Colin Wrong -(again) - how would they know if he was an Arab or not?
Anyone actually reading the article and not just the headline would see that is said: "Guards ... identified a man running toward the crossing and trying to climb the security fence. They called on him to stop and fired warning shots in the air. When he did not heed their calls they fired towards his lower body," an IDF statement read. This is in line with standing orders for opening fire in many armies, not just the IDF. The article further states he died of his wounds in hospital, showing that he wasn't killed outright. Any fool can read a headline and make inane comments; only an objective person will read the entire article before they draw conclusions. Has is occurred to anyone that perhaps he was "committing suicide by IDF"? Given his alleged mental illness, it's a distinct possibility.
when in fact the IDF was only being consistent.
there are ways to disarm and disable such a person without shooting to kill.
There are many problems with stun-guns but there are times when it should be prefered. We are having this debate in Australia at the moment because of the number of mentaly ill people who are getting killed when they attack police. My experience in Israel is that the Israeli respect for human life should mean that Israel should have means of non-leathal force in place.
If this man was an Israeli he would be killed anyway in Gaza or create another abduction case.
If he was Israeli Arab they would have mentioned it.
Perhaps the victim was an Israeli Arab. That would help to explain things.
Shooting before thinking/asking, how many innocent Palestinians have already lost their life due to this irresponsible Israeli attitude, and now you have even killed (or should one use the word "murdered"...???) one of your fellow Jews !!!
The question is was there a need to shoot? Which modern weapons if you shoot someone you are likely to kill them since these weapons are designed to do maximum damage.
If this guy solely wanted to go into Gaza as crazy as it is there by his self, obviously he wanted to go out as a Jewish martyr. Now I know it's a slow process to execute the use of force policy equally, but if Israel would consider using the same policy against the settlers who try to kill Palestinians in the territories, the IDF may become known as a no nonsense equal opportunity law enforcer. I mean they don't hesitate twice to shoot innocent Palestinian kids playing on the beach in Gaza nor the unarmed protesters in the West Bank.
The POLICY of "If you see it, you can kill it" is reckless and dangerous. This time it took out an Israeli civilian. It has killed or maimed many Gazan civilians since the end of Cast lead, including more than one in the past week. Apparently, the IDF doesn't allow the Israeli papers to report on who and how many Palestinians it shoots in Gaza anymore. Whether it's shelling boats at anchor in port near Rafah or kids on the beach or within sight of the fence, If you can see it, you can kill it seems to apply.
Why not shoot in the leg? I never understood this about IDF. Whether it's a stone thrower, or someone approaching the wall, it's always shoot to kill. Why not wound and immobilize the person until you figure out the facts?
