Islamic Jihad says Hamas stopping their rocket crews in Gaza

Group adds Hamas nixed a rally and arrested two of its members in dispute over Gaza mosque.

A Palestinian armed group accused the Gaza Strip's Hamas rulers on Saturday of preventing its men from firing rockets at Israel, a sensitive allegation for the Islamist faction as it pursues mediated deals with the country.

Hamas police intercepted Islamic Jihad rocket crews on three occasions over the past month, a group official said, foiling their bids to avenge Israel Defense Forces fire on Gaza and to show solidarity with Palestinian protests over a contested Jerusalem shrine.

"We have been prevented from launching attacks," the Islamic Jihad official told Reuters, adding that Hamas had also scrapped a planned rally by the group and arrested two of its members in a dispute over control of a mosque in northern Gaza.

Hamas, which fired hundreds of short-range rockets into Israel during a December-January war but has since privately called for the salvoes to stop for the sake of repairing Gaza's ravaged infrastructure, denied Islamic Jihad's allegation.

"There is no truce with the occupation (Israel), whose crimes against our people are continuing, and therefore we have not and we will not block resistance," said Ehab Al-Ghsain, spokesman for the Hamas-run Interior Ministry.

Islamic Jihad's complaint could not be independently verified -- not least as, by its own account, its rocketeers had been only briefly detained by Hamas police.

Gazan rocket attacks on Israel have tapered off since the war, and Israeli defence officials have credited Hamas, saying it sought calm in order both to avoid another conflict and to improve its standing among Palestinians and abroad.

Like Islamic Jihad, Hamas is deeply conservative and rules out coexistence with Israel, a position that helped trigger a schism with U.S.-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who holds sway in the West Bank and wants a Middle East peace pact.

Yet Hamas has signalled willingness to enter a long-term truce with Israel and, through Egypt and Germany, is negotiating the exchange of an Israeli soldier held captive in Gaza for hundreds of jailed Palestinians.

Egypt is also trying to mend the rift between Hamas and the secular Fatah faction of Abbas, who has often accused the Islamists of jeopardising Palestinian national aspirations with "pointless" violence against Israel.

"Like Islamic Jihad, Hamas is deeply conservative and rules out coexistence with Israel" - is a lie. Hamas has made a proposal of returning to pre-1967 borders and coexistence which ofcourse doesnt fit with Israel's goal of Eretz Israel and hence they ignore Hamas' proposal and keep spreading the lie that Hamas does not want coexistence! Unfortunately, Hamas is also becoming the occupier's policeman just like PLO did and look where PLO/Fatah are now - occupier's puppets!! Resistance to illegal occupation is the right of the occuipeds according to the International Law and according to the UN.

since Hamas is presently and heatedly accusing Abbas of being a collaborator. The truth is Hamas is also collaborating with Israel, most probably for the simple fact that they realize that bringing another Israeli incursion into Gaza and then trying to hide behind their women and children again wouldn't make them the most popular kids on the block.

"... Who cares as long as they are sadists who keep Gilad Shalit from his families." Shalit is a Prisoner of War. As a soldier of a state at war with the Palestinians, he is held legitimately. Israel is itself holding thousands of Pals. The Goldstone Report specifically finds that he entitled to the protection of the Geneva Convention as a POW. He should be given the right to visits from international observer, but otherwise, based the latest video, it appears he is being treated humanely. There is certainly no evidence that he is being treated sadistically. I sympathize with his family and hope that he is released soon in a prisoner exchange. But Israelis need to understand that there is a huge difference between soldiers/militants and civlian noncombatants, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Israel's inability or unwilllingness to understand this largely explains the war crimes it committed in Cast Lead. It just doesnt get it.

Just as any governing body should, Hamas are ensuring that indiscriminate attacks are not carried out. Hamas is making a jesture - can't you see that? It should be welcomed and not stamped into the dust. Many small steps will eventually make a giant stride. This issue will not be settled by violence from either side and I think that it is beginning to sink in. May peace prevail (on both sides).

Nice, finally a small scrap of good news that Hamas is trying to stop missile attacks into Israel, and it is met by comments that you wish Arabs would all kill themselves and "they better had or we'll kill more civilians". I apologise to the majority of Israelis who merely want to see peace, but the comments left on this story are the sorts of comments that have given Israel such a dreadful reputation around the world.

Lets be wary. Here lies another strange development. The lull before the storm. Similar to the latest events in Tehran. You know, "outsourcing" for uranium. Meanwhile may I suggest that Islamic Jihad write a letter of complaint to Libya, for another resolution from the UN Theatrical and Dance Club.

Hamas better stop the rockets if they know what's good for them
    • Conroy
    • 10.10.09
    • 20:08

Hamas is stopping the rockets because they know what will happen to them and Gaza as a whole if the rockets start again. Goldstone can go screw himself - if the terrorists want to tangle with Israel, you'll see another Gaza incursion. Goldstone obviously doesn't think Israel has the right to protect its citizens against terrorism. Every other country does though, right Goldstone?
