Iran: We`ll hit Israel`s nuclear sites if attacked

Iran nuclear official criticizes new UN nuke observatory on border; calls it a form of 'espionage.'

By News Agencies Tags: Iran nuclear Israel news

Iran would strike back at Israeli weapons manufacturing sites and nuclear installations if Israel attacks the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities, Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Israel has not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve an international dispute over Iran's nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at making bombs.

Iran denies the charge and says it would retaliate if attacked.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran's armed forces are fully prepared," Vahidi told reporters during a visit to Syria, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported. If attacked by Israel, Iran's first targets would include various weapons manufacturing sites and "unconventional nuclear centers", Vahidi said.

Also on Wednesday, Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi, speaking in Damascus, hailed Syrian-Iranian defense ties as a "deterrent" against Israeli "threats," Iranian media reported.

"Promotion of defense ties (between) Iran and Syria is a deterrent factor against the Zionist regime's threats which target nations of the region," Iran's official ISNA news agency quoted Vahidi as saying after his meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The meeting, which a statement from the Syrian presidency said also included Syria's top military commanders, came three days after Syria hosted Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili.

"The enemy's aim is to threaten the region's security and plunder its reserves, but the two countries have always prevented accomplishment of (this) evil aim," Vahidi said.

The minister also held meetings with representatives of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and with representatives of Palestinian groups living in exile in Damascus, the Syrian presidency's statement noted.

Ahmadinejad: Iran does not want escalation over nuclear dispute

Iran does not want further escalation in the dispute over its nuclear programs and wants talks with the world powers, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday.

"We do not welcome any escalation and are ready to hold further talks with world powers over global issues," Ahmadinejad said after a cabinet session in Tehran, reiterating previous offers of talks, which, however, did exclude the nuclear issue in the past.

The website of state television network IRIB quoted the president as saying that all of Iran's nuclear projects are and have always been in line with international laws and regulations.

Ahmadinejad repeated that Iran was serious about plans announced earlier this month to build 10 more uranium enrichment sites and said that the location of five of them has already been finalized.

Tehran has been denying accusations that it is secretly pursuing nuclear weapons, but has also refused - despite several UN Security Council sanctions resolutions - to suspend uranium enrichment, which the West fears could be used to make atomic bombs.

Iran official criticizes new UN nuke observatory

Meanwhile, an Iranian nuclear official has said the purpose of a UN warning station set up in Turkmenistan near the border with Iran is espionage.

The UN last week announced the new nuclear warning station ? one of dozens such observatories worldwide that monitor for seismic activity and radioactivity.

The station, just miles from the Iranian border, can detect extremely weak blasts and even shock waves from nuclear experiments.

The Iranian official, Abolfazl Zohrehvand, says the station will only give world powers an opportunity to spy on Iran.

Zohrehvand, an adviser to Iran's nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, spoke on Wednesday to state IRNA news agency.

The West worries Tehran seeks to build a nuclear weapon, a charge Iran denies.

You maintain the US acts in its own interests. If so, the US would have dumped the Israeli burden decades ago. The US has been a steadfast Israeli ally for over 60 years. For all those years, the US protected Israel in the UN with vetoes, guaranteed Israel's international loans and supported Israel with aid, last year $3 billion. As of 2008 US aid to Israel since 1949 totaled $103.6 billion, plus interest lost on grants, unpaid loans etc. With everything, total cost to US is over $3 trillion. In addition, the US has consistently sacrificed its own national interests in the ME to support and further those of Israel. Many Americans believe our national interests lie in the Arab world, not in Israel. Arab nations provide oil, fought with us in the Gulf war, give us military bases, support the US in the IMF, World Bank and the UN. Some Arab allies provide superb intelligence on Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Israel provides none of that. You should hope the US remains naive.

Israel can call itself anything it wants. But it declared statehood on 14 May 1948 as the "State of Israel." It was recognized as a member of the UN as the "State of Israel." Israel has diplomatic recognition with 162 nations, all of whom recognize the "State of Israel", because that's what Israel said its name is. But for Israel now to claim that Palestinians must recognize Israel as the "Jewish" State of Israel is nothing more that another arrogant attempt to forestall peace talks. If Israel wants to be called the "Jewish State of Israel," then change the name of the country. But its silly. More than 20% of Israel is not Jewish. It would be like the UK deciding it is now to be called the Great Anglican Britain.

which is mostly owned by the Chinese, will make the Chinese VERY ANGRY and they definitely have the capability to totally wipe out Israel AND the US will NOT got to war with China over Israel because China can also wipe out most of the US. Even if China doesn't destroy Israel, the price of oil will sky rocket and the US economy will go through the basement. When the people in the US start to starve because of severe energy shortages, Israel will be in deep, deep trouble. China has a lot more US dollars to buy all the oil on the market than the US has.

But when people say Bush attacked Iraq just for oil it's annoying, because if it was true, we never saw any cheap gasoline. In fact, if you remember, it got even more expensive during Bush's government. So what was the point of attacking Iraq, especially as it was complying with the inspectors?

"Attack on israeli nuke site should result in an immediate nuke response against iran. Light up the entire country." If Israel attacks Iranian nuclear sites, and then Iran attacks Israeli nuclear sites, there is a beautiful symmetry to the whole performance. On the other hand, if Israel doesn't attack Iran, there is a much more peaceful symmetry. This would seem to be the preferable approach.

This makes sense. I am surprised that they felt the need to announce it. I am sure that people are dying to know if Irans missiles are that accurate and whether Israel can intercept them. After this becomes known, peace may be just around the corner.

Do they all really want to die becuase of their leaders?? Change your leadership before they cause iran to no longer exist on the map as a country.

The history of imperialism will end in this region. Iran's revolution was perceived as a mortel danger from the onset. Arab regimes were quick to fight Iran using their monies, Saddam army and the Western benediction. Although, thought to evaporate like ice in summer, Iran survived. Now, Iran is better prepared and could do a lot of dammages. The US have gambled in Afghanistan and Iraq and they are exhausted.

Israel may have had its own interests on Iraq, but that does not mean that the US went to war solely because of that. Clearly there was Shiite interest for a war against Sadam but would you be prepared to say that the US went to war because it was pushed by them? Have you also considered an oil alternative?

israel has NEVER wanted nor asked for US soldiers to fight their battles. Iraq was the right move..saddam used wmd's on his own people at halabja, killing over 5000 in minutes, men women and children, he was in violation of over 17 UN resolutions, had tried to get nukes as far back as 1981, coupled with russia's dissintegration in 1990's and their nuke scientists as guns for hire, oil for food sanction were being backdoored by none other than kofi annan's son and the money was going to weapons programs,he had brutalized his own country for 30 yrs+, invaded neighbours, lobbed missiles at israel for which israel did not retaliate..only the PRETEXT bush used to go in was wrong and that was BECAUSE the UN was a blocking agent for dictators like saddam..but the US was welcomed in by iraqis..the invasion was totally just..it's funny how some of you think iran is a threat to only israel...time you woke up...CONTEXT IS IMPORTANT TOO, post 9/11 world-the gloves were finally off.

WHAT IF IRAN DOES NOT REALLY HAVE NUKES?
    • JUDGE
    • 09.12.09
    • 15:39

It doesn't matter. Israel wants to drag the US into yet another conflict and have it fight its war for it yet again. The US has already "screwed up" regarding Iraq and WMD, but Israel welcomes that screwup. Israel is praying that he US will go after Iran. SO if Iran feels that Israel is creating a pre-tense (Nuke Program) to attack it, they probably feel 'What the heck, we might as well develop nukes since we're already being accused of having them.'

Iran has not signed the Addional Protocol, so it is in its right not to abide with that. By a similar logic, Israel has not signed the NPT, so they are allowed to have nuclear weapons. You can't have it both ways. If Israel is not bound by treaties it did not sign, neither is Iran.

    the West worries?

    • 09.12.09
    • 14:58

The BBC and other media outlets use various words for the West's attitude - fear, worry, suspicion. Since it has become fairly clear that Saddam Hussein had no nuclear weapons or even an active program, despite talk at the time of "fear" etc, it would be more objective to say that the West "accuses" Iran of developing such weapons. That at least is incontrovertible, unlike the other terms used.
