Iran vents frustration with Moscow, expels Russian pilots

Signs of growing anger in Tehran as Russia stalls on missile deal and backs nuclear sanctions.

Iran has given Russian commercial pilots working in the Islamic Republic two months to leave the country as it has no need for them, Transport Minister Hamid Behbahani was quoted as saying on Saturday.

The move is a further sign of strains between Iran and Russia, which has indicated it could back new sanctions against Tehran over its disputed nuclear work. For its part, Iran has voiced frustration over Moscow's failure to deliver a defense missile system.

Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency said the idea to order the Russian pilots to leave the country gained momentum after a Russian-made aircraft caught fire as it landed in northeastern Iran in January, injuring more than 40 people.

The plane belonged to Iran's Taban airline but the pilot was Russian, Fars said. It did not say how many Russians currently worked as pilots for Iranian airlines.

"Upon an order from the president (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad), the Road and Transport Ministry has set a two-month deadline, upon the expiry of which all Russian pilots will have to leave the country," Behbahani said.

"When our country itself possesses plenty of professional and specialist pilots, there is no need to bring in pilots from abroad," he told Fars.

Iran has suffered a string of crashes in the past few decades, many involving Russian-made aircraft.

In 2009 a Tupolev aircraft flying to Armenia caught fire in mid-air and crashed, killing all 168 people on board.

U.S. sanctions against Iran have prevented it from buying new aircraft or spare parts from the West, forcing it to supplement its ageing fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes with aircraft from Russia and other former Soviet states.

Behbahani said about 120 aircraft out of 193 planes in Iran's commercial fleet were currently active, with the rest grounded for one reason or another.

Russia, which has significant trade ties with Iran, is among six world powers trying to find a diplomatic solution to the long-running dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.

Moscow has indicated it could support new sanctions against Iran provided they are not too severe. Iran denies Western accusations that its nuclear work is aimed at developing bombs.

Iranian officials have voiced growing frustration at Russia's failure to supply the advanced S-300 missile defense system, which Israel and the United States do not want Tehran to have.

Russia last month said it would not sell weapons if it leads to destabilization in any region.

Russian pilots won't fly airliners into buildings. They won't do their Islamic duty. They are after all, Russians. It is better to have Islamic pilots who will sacrifice themselves and their planes when ordered to Jihad.

The reason is that perhaps Moscow hates an Israel/Jews less than the West Europe does.

There is only room for one regional "superpower" in central asia. As Russia continues to reassert its hegemony over the former Soviet Union states, conflict with growing Iranian imperical ambitions will be inevitable. The most obvious conflicts involve the former soviet republics of Azerbaijan (part of a greater azerbaijan along with Iran's northeaster province) and Tajikistan (related by language and culture to the persian overlords of Iran), but the entire central asia region will be a 21st century battleground between Russia and Iran. Israel is merely a sideshow with absolutely no impact or conflict with iranian ambitions and national interests.

I always knew that all it took was a thought. Becoming immortalised really does exist as a concept. But it was only when the 9/11 happened did we become conscious that all the fears we had, had actually manifested into reality. Could it be possible that Ahmadinejad is such a Man, who would sacrifice himself, his family and his country because ogf his Deep religious beliefs.

Why is Iran so angry over not getting a missile defense system in a hurry? Why is it that the world see's the more you deny Iran something, the more their true motives appear? I commend Russia for finally having a level of morality over financial profits. The only reason Iran wants missile defense so badly is so it's harder to destroy their nuke capabilities AFTER they have already aimed and launched nukes in the direction over the west. I believe Iran not having the missile defense system is more crippling than any general sanctions, because it strategically denies them the ability to attack even if they DID finalize a nuke warhead. Keep it up Russia, don't let them have something they may actually even use against YOU TOO if push came to shove. No missile defense = no mideast war, that's why Iran is so angry at the thought of not getting the missile system.

The sad truth is Iran is running short of plane parts but then...who needs pilots when you have guided missiles? The Russian pilots can go fly their kite.

And that is why the US is saying China and Russia will be aboard with them. This approach guarantees an Israeli strike on Iran. What an awful situation for the world, and in particular Israel. Put into context, the Arab League`s plan to hold indirect talks for the next 4 months is a means of holding Israel back from striking Iran. The US is doing likewise by saying it will lay blame if the Arab Israeli conflict isn`t solved (for the millionth time). You can be sure the Palestinians will not be blamed, for how else can phony peace negotiations continue in the future with no peace partner (like the Palestinians). It is possible that Israel will not attack Iran because Netanyahu has agreed to these indirect talks (he has been weak in the past and didn`t last as PM once before).
