Iran to continue enriching uranium if third party deal fails
Ahmadinejad says country willing to buy enriched uranium from anybody who is willing to sell it.
By Haaretz Service and News Agencies Tags: Barack Obama Israel news Iran nuclearIran says it will continue to enrich uranium if a deal to procure a third-party source breaks down, the French news agency AFP reported on Saturday.
Earlier this month Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that Iran is willing to purchase uranium enriched to the grade it requires for its Tehran reactor from a third party, rather than carry out the enrichment itself.
Iran Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) spokesman Ali Shirzadian was quoted as saying that the UN atomic watchdog would be responsible if any third-party deal to process high grade uranium broke down.
Iran state-run media quoted him saying that Iran "will write a letter and announce to the International Atomic Energy Agency that it will act directly to supply the fuel for the Tehran reactor," if the current negotiations to find a third party fail.
"One of the subjects on the agenda of this negotiation is how we can get fuel for our Tehran reactor," the president was quoted by Iran's ISNA news agency as saying.
"As I said in New York, we need 19.75 percent-enriched uranium. We said that, and we propose to buy it from anybody who is ready to sell it to us. We are ready to give 3.5 percent-enriched uranium and then they can enrich it more and deliver to us 19.75 percent-enriched uranium," Ahmadinejad explained.
Iran insists its nuclear program is purely peaceful, and needs the fuel to power a research reactor in Tehran.
IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei has said experts will meet in Vienna on Oct. 19 to discuss the deal for Russia to take some of Iran's processed uranium and enrich it. He said Iran would take part.
Meanwhile an Iranian official was quoted on Saturday saying that Iran needs up to 300 kg of nuclear fuel to cover the requirements of a reactor in Tehran for a year and a half.
Western diplomats say Iran agreed in principle at October 1 talks in Geneva to send about 80 percent of its stockpile of low-enriched uranium to Russia and France for processing and return to Tehran to replenish dwindling fuel stocks for a reactor in the capital that produces isotopes for cancer care.
Shirzadian suggested it was Iran's proposal to turn over low-enriched uranium and receive fuel refined to 20 percent in return, in comments carried by ISNA news agency.
"This proposal is feasible and it has been decided that the different ways of realizing this goal should be discussed," he said.
"The amount of fuel this reactor would need depends on the way the fuel works and it would range from 150 to 300 kg for a period of one and a half years," Shirzadian said.

22 kilo of U 235 HEU 80 to 90% is enough for one device 3000 cascades of centrifuges high speed would have produce twice the amount in the time lapsed given that your not looking at the hidden project so if they have three cocurrent project you looking what you donot like to see
the only way to get rid of this pathetic man is to isolate him. how can a malicious man work towards peace.
I have looked at some of the responses and am dissappointed in the quality of them. All claim in an indirect manner that Iran does not have the right to enrich uranium. Iran is stating that it will buy ALREADY-enriched uranium so they do not have to. This is ultimate proof of their peaceful nuclear ambitions. However, it seems like even that is not good enough...does this mean only Israel and America are allowed to use to nuclear power plants to provide electricity to their populations?
I believe Iran will test this agreement - they will continue to enrich themselves (sensible to maintain this ability by anyones measure) whilst sending a few kg of Uranium at a time to each of the 'contactors' offering to enrich further. Once they get it back the next few kg will go. Surly no one can be so naieve as to think Iran will ship out their entire stockpile at once........ but if the plan was indeed to 'relive' Iran of their stockpile by 'tying it up' in processing abroad, then they will be sorely dissapointed.
"according to my calculation they have the bomb by now" - Atomic Jew Keep figuring. When you learn how to add 2 to 2 you might figure out where you went wrong.
Several points are clear. 1. The Arak heavy water reactor which was to replace the Tehran Research Reactor is way behind schedule. 2. The cascades of centrifuges Iran has built are not long enough to produce Uranium enriched beyond 4.5%. Thus Iran needs Uranium sufficiently enriched to refuel the TRR.
BASED on 3 different projects output they should have the thing
... their Big Lie. Ahmadinejad already said they would'nt stop their enrichment efforts no matter what, and that includes pursuing their clandestine program for weapons-grade uranium while getting enriched material from others.
Given how reliable outside sources were in past agreements, it is surprising that Iran would agree to the outside source concession. It almost fall into the category of amazing they would trust an outside source to deliver.
Next thing you know, there will be a huge nuclear test explosion somewhere in ther vast isolated region or Iran, and then it's too late.
How many irradiated isotopes for Medical use for patients waiting in line to be treated ? Is Cancer is wide spread disease in tehran one has to check i hate to sound like doctor Mengele one has to be carefull
