Iran's top leader says Iran has made great technological progress despite U.S. and UN sanctions.

Addressing Iranian military commanders Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies promoted self-confidence in Iran.

He said that helped the country make tremendous progress in nuclear and space technologies.

Iran says it has achieved proficiency in the whole cycle of nuclear fuel - from extracting uranium ore to enriching it.

This week, the country also announced launching its first domestically made satellite into orbit.

Iran is under international sanctions designed to stop it from importing technology that could be used to develop nuclear weapons and missiles.
