Iran MP: We could produce our own missile defense system
Lawmaker says Iran will soon be able to produce system if Russia does not deliver S-300 air defense missiles.
By Reuters Tags: Iran nuclear Israel newsIran will soon be able to produce an advanced missile defense system itself if Russia does not deliver it to the Islamic Republic, a senior lawmaker said in comments published on Sunday.
The warning by Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who heads the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy committee, was the latest sign of growing irritation in Tehran over what it sees as Moscow's failure so far to fulfill a missile sales agreement.
Moscow, which is under Western pressure to distance itself from Iran over its disputed nuclear ambitions, has not followed through on proposals to supply high-grade S-300 air defense missiles to the Islamic Republic.
Iranian media reports have claimed the S-300 missile systems could inflict significant damage on U.S. or Israeli forces, were they to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.
According to Aftab-e Yazd newspaper, Boroujerdi said: "Iran is not a country to come to a halt in the face of non-cooperation of other countries."
"Naturally and in view of the capabilities it possesses, the Islamic Republic will be able to mass-produce this missile system in a not so distant future," he said.
He did not elaborate but appeared to refer to a missile system which would have similar capabilities to the S-300.
Boroujerdi's comment came two days after a senior Iranian military official complained publicly over Russia's failure to deliver the system, which Washington does not want Iran to have.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised Russia last month for failing to provide the arms to Iran, which is at odds with the West over its nuclear and missile program.
Washington has sought specific pledges from Russia for tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear energy program, which the West suspects is intended to produce nuclear weapons. Tehran denies any such intention.
The truck-mounted S-300PMU1, known in the West as the SA-20, can shoot down cruise missiles and aircraft. It can fire at targets up to 150 km away and travel at more than two km per second.
Israel, which is thought to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, has hinted it could attack Iran in an effort to stop its arch-enemy obtaining nuclear weapons. Iran has threatened to retaliate for any attack by firing medium-range missiles at Israel.
The commander of Iran's air force, Brigadier General Hassan Shahsafi, separately announced plans to produce new "heat-seeking air-to-air missiles", Jomhuri Eslami newspaper reported on Sunday.
Iran often announces progress in its military capabilities and development of new weapons, in order to show its readiness to counter threats.

It is quite funny that you think iran is incapable of producing there own weapons & and making us arabs look like fools. But what funnier is that your country has been whining and crying for more than a decade on its lost cute missing soldier (Ron Arad). If you are wrong you will have more Ron Arad's. I think thats funnier. looool Peace from Lebanon
I do not wish to tell anyone that the Iranians are not determined and resourceful. But they recently announce their ability to build the Improved Hawk Missile some 40 years old. Iran is no where able to produce a modern air-to-air missile system much less a system capable of destroying incoming missile and aircraft at long range. Iran would be wise to stop listening to the exaggerated accounts of it's abilities and capabilities in the Israeli press and start dealing with it's technical weaknesses.
.... then it can unveal them "in a not so distant future" "Hey!" cry the Americans, "Those are S-300s!! Whaaaaat gives? Putiiiiiin! You said you weren't supplying S-300s!" Russia: No, no, they're not ours, tho I admit they look like S-300s. Curious...... Iran: No, no, they're not Russian. They are all home-grown.....
"The Iranian revolution is a genuine one and the West could not live with it." - sami abu ismail The world was not against the Iranian revolution initially. Even the US accepted it. It was only when Iran broke the number 1 rule of diplomacy and seized the American Embassy and threatened others that the world took umbrage. It was the Iranian revolution that pursued behavior that revolted the world. It has continued to behave badly and that is the reason it has few nations willing to treat it equally and far fewer friends.
the mindset of some people here is amasing, what ever is built will have a counter measure built, and all by man.
The US missile defense system is an ineffective waste of money. Any Iranian version will be just as useless, and just as big a waste of time, money, and effort.
who are they going to blame when there will be a Iranian Chernobyl???In the hands of Iranian scientists it is possible.Israel , why not? everything ells that it failed by this fanatics will and was blamed on Israel, and how many Arab neighbors of Iran will suffer for years, just like the Ukrainians still today.
You self and the like of you hehehe...
hahahaha they can produce they own defense system hahahaha very fanny:)))) the joke of the year!!! If they can produce anything why did they go to Russia for everything in the first place???Everybody thinks according to them self's they are stupid and they think everybody ells is the same, the only ppl that will foll for this is ppl with the same mentality....
You know we in Israel looked at the system. The virus capability on that system is too much. Hackers got into the system the day we shopped it really a gip. Honesty best. The recoil unit on it slips and the missle can hang or slingshot to the left to far. Like a golf slice. It cuts and hangs missing its target hitting civilian population. I know to some of you it doesnt matter to us in Israel and the United States it is every soul is precious. Rankoo -(Karoon)
Few or none are with it. The Iranian revolution is a genuine one and the West could not live with it. Since 1979 they instigated all kind of plots, even pushed sadam and Arabs to 8 tears war. Few countries could have survived such hostilities. But those People are serious and that is what the Western powers could not accept.
"So Israel lost only 100 troops, while Hezbollah lost half of their fighting force? And all the time it was Hezbollah which ran from the field of battle. It seems that Hezbollah did learn a thing or two after all." Half its fighting force??? Then I guess on the last day of the war, the other half managed to fire 250 rockets, kill 40 IDF troops and shoot down a helicopter. That was by far Hizbullah's best day of the war and, according to you, they did it with only "half" their fighting force. Impressive.
The IAF has participated in Red Flag out at Nellis Air Patch and has no doubt trained against the S-300PMU system.
... or at least it should have. Currently, all the Russian, Chinese, N. Korean, & Pakistani military expertise and designs that Iran has mimicked and reverse engineered to some extent for their war base are all conveniently erased from their rightful, copyrighted place to be instead supplanted by just one proud IRG stamp (along with all the proud Persian rhetoric to go along with it). Also, American software design expertise (Internet, Operating Systems, Photoshop, etc.) has been rampantly copied and copiously used by the Regime without so much as an acknowledgement or statement of thanks, but with lots of belligerent rhetoric instead. An Iranian girl once proudly showed me her disk of software she purchased for $10 in Tehran and it must have had about $80,000 worth of retail programs on it, almost all American based. Iran does have a lot of bright people (some of their current nuclear scientists studied at MIT in the mid-seventies) but not the Regime's leaders!
So Israel lost only 100 troops, while Hezbollah lost half of their fighting force? And all the time it was Hezbollah which ran from the field of battle. It seems that Hezbollah did learn a thing or two after all.
it was the same thing with Sam5 with a range more than 250 kms and the sam 6 in the 1980s both were defeated easly f 117 was built by and was defeated by man
"The F-22 is the only plane currently that could win against this system and take them out," - Bloodyscot Provided there is no rain to wash the RAM off.
The reason for an missile defense system is not to protect a civilian use nuclear complex. It would only mean to protect a nuclear weapons facility. The Western countries barely protect their civilian nuclear plants with low tech cement barriers, steel fence and private guards. If Iran wants nukes, and Russia and China will either block sanctions or bypass them, this leaves only one solution. The Strait of Hormuz must remain open though. So Iran must be notified in advance that to restrict shipping through the Gulf or any attack on the Gulf nations will be met with absolute ferocity. The Iranians will concede. checkmate
They built their own nuke program...all of you seem to be taking that seriously. They built a mini space program and actually sent a satellite into space earlier this year. All this done under a highly restrictive embargo. So who knows what they can make. And by the way, they do make their own cellphones now. As well as their own cars.
Funny you should say that 3 & 4; the mighty IDF thought the same way when they invaded Lebanon in 2006, to 'teach Hezbullah a lesson' and to their surprise, they ended up learning a very important lesson by over estimating themselves and loosing more than 100 mighty IDF troops in the process. Israel will always be envious of Iran for being a wealthy self sufficient nation, they are not dependent on anyone like Israel is.
The S-400 system with SA-20s is currently the best all round in the world but only alittle better than US Patriot system. The key is its non jamming radar and very long range and hard to fool SA-20 missiles. Iran is very close to making its own SA-20 missiles but have problems with radar to make it non-jamming and stealth proof like the S-400 radar, China has help them upgrade their radar but to what level is unknown. The F-22 is the only plane currently that could win against this system and take them out, the F-35 in a fast frontal attack maybe but risky.
Israel - just do it. Save the world, again, please.
Why do I picture a Camel with a missle on its back slowly ,oving through the desert? Cheers, Levi
they scream, they boast, they threaten, they posture .. It's always a sign of weakness in the Middle East because their infantile culture-driven pride and honour won't allow them to tell the truth when they're in a hole. The Iranians are mainly talk but that doesn't mean we can ignore their nuclear goals - better to nip in the bud.
...system. Normally its called copying a system already installed, obviously it requires what is known as back engineering. However even back engineering requires not only technical skills, it also requires the engineering complexes and machinery, years of R & D, obviously Iran has come a far way today, for it has well trained and highly skilled technicians who actually can put together cruise missiles and others that come in "kit" form. Pity then, they have not been able to keep their air force planes aloft, or in fact the same goes for their ever crashing civilian aircraft. I will believe in the "fiddler scientists" the day that they can produce an all Iranian cellphone, not export bicycles and tractors or milk plants, as in the case of Venezuela or Bolivia. Good day.
Before WW II, there were sanctions on Japan and Germany. It didn't even slow their armament. Anybody remember the 5-5-3 Battleship formula? The US slapped an embargo on Iran in 1979. But they still have aircraft flying. With Dick Cheney's help, they still have a burgeoning oil industry. And they still have one reactor running and another close to online. They also have a space program and aerospace industry. With a landmass bigger than Texas and a population of 70 million, they could do it.
