Iran launches 'huge' war games amid threats to strike Tel Aviv

War games aimed at helping protect nuclear sites; Iran cleric: We'll strike heart of Tel Aviv if attacked.

By News Agencies Tags: Iran nuclear Israel news

Iran began large-scale drills on Sunday to help protect its nuclear facilities, state TV said, after a senior Iranian cleric warned on Saturday that the Islamic Republic strike Tel Aviv if attacked.

"If the enemy should want to test its bad luck in Iran, before the dust from its missiles settles in this country, Iran's ballistic missiles would land in the heart of Tel Aviv," said cleric Mojtaba Zolnour, the IRNA news agency reported.

Zalnour is a deputy of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's representative in the Revolutionary Guards, which will be staging the defence drills together with the regular armed forces.

The official IRNA news agency said on Saturday that the war games would take place in western Iran and that they would be "huge." The exercises are due to last five days, Iranian media quoted Brigadier General Ahmad Mighani as saying.

"It is the biggest war game, which takes place over an area 600,000 sq km (230,000 sq miles). The aim of this war game is to promote military power of the armed forces against any attack," the television quoted Mighani as saying.

"The aim of the drill is to display Iran's combat readiness and military potentials," Mighani said.

"Defense policies, psychological operations and innovations during the war game are among the objectives of the drill."

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve the row over Iranian nuclear work that the West suspects is aimed at making bombs.

Iran, which insists its nuclear program is solely to generate electricity, has also threatened in the past to hit back with a "crushing" response at Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf if it is attacked.

    # 70 10 Plagues were visited on Pharaoh's land. And the angel of the Lord Passed Over the houses of the Israelites......And they were not harmed ! (Jews celebrate the Passover all over the world in commemoration of that event !) And since you try to show some false learning. In that book you can find anything you want. Since you quote words from something that was written over 2000 years ago & plant it to the present,it goes to show how strong those sayings are. But don't be foolish ! You can find the lowest behaviour of human beings,(Sodom & Gommorah). And you can soar beyond earth's gravity & reach to the heavens with the great Prophecies of the Old Testament, where cultured,& enlightened people quote their sayings till this day !

Really and truly,we should expect HRW to be protesting the Iranian regime's threatened violence against Israelis and its actual violence by means of Hamas and Hizbollah proxies. But I have a shrewd idea that HRW will regard the non-Jewish Israelis as being used as human shields to protect Jews from missile attack. You just cannot win with them. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!

Funny you mentioned your friend being proud; I have known & put tremendous faith in the women's movement in Iran & I have been following it all my life. For years I've been arguing FOR it on this very TB believing in its power. But let me tell ya, none of us thought the movement was THIS BIG of a force. I think it even took women in the middle of it by surprise. Don't get me wrong, they knew what needed to be done & how but to completely break away from the framework..it's been an amazing phenomenon to watch unfold. From Morning Mothers to women journalists, activists & students collectively, they make me feel an inch and 3/4th tall! And maybe the fact that women are to lose the least and gain the most when it comes to the regime...Nevertheless, behold their power!!! The best way to support is by keeping an eye on developments (regime hopes for world to lose interest), not recognizing the regime as legitimate, and pressuring it on the human rights issues.

I agree that the leaders should give up their positions, but the religion was forced and for that reason it should be rejected by the majority. Iran would put itself in a bad position considering its neighboring countries, but Iran needs to step up and show that they're a middle eastern country that doesn't promote hatred. Like some of the other countries.

It always amazes me that people do not realise that and keep trying to force themselves into the only workable pattern. Afghanistan is no exception, neither are Iran, Iraq, etc. etc. etc. Educate and support... by example and from the outside. And with respect. Maybe it is because of the lack of respect for others that there are so many wars.

My Mother is a Persian German Jew and my Father is Russian Persian Jew. No one in my family is Muslim. In my opinion and many other Persian's opinions, we believe that Iran should just drop the whole Islam religion and go back to Zoasterism. Zoasterism was the first monotheistic religion. Ahura Mazda=G-d. Ahriman=Satan and Mithra was also worshipped as the light bringer. When you do your research you learn that a great deal of Judaism comes out of Persia and many Jews lived and assimilated into Persian culture. Arabs unfortunately made most Persian and Jews convert to Islam. Not cool at all.

Iranian youth is no longer interested in falling for red herrings like "death to Israel." They've been duped long enough and are now too wise to fall for the regime's war posturing to divert attention away from domestic stagnation and repressive politics.. Israel should prepare for solid defense, just in case, but should not attack Iran, whose regime would use this external threat to unite its divided people, therebye perpetuating its control over the government.

The Iranians have no need for uranium because it will take decades before the nuclear installations network is in place, meaning Iran has no immediate use for the enriched uranium it has accumulated. This is the main reason why many in the West and elsewhere know the only use for the uranium is for the production of nuclear weapons. What is the purpose of having a stockpile now if not for other purposes.

What's more interesting, the unrest has spilled into high schools and middle schools (the latter unprecedented!!)The gov has promised unbridled response! And threatenng to send basijis to middle schools (a red tape even for this regime). In a time span of 4-5 months they have executed more than 120 people, just to create fear and intimidation. Noone knows better than this regime how to create fear. One thing they didn't count on:fearless factor in every citizen's eyes, ready to take back what was taken from them...The realization is a hair-raising experiment when you can feel nobody is afraid of what lays ahead and everybody is willing to pay the price.....loads of purr & Meow

Further, Ibrahim, to describe Israel's occupation of the West Bank as the root of all evils is going a bit overboard, isn't it? This might be a good time for Israel to lower its voice about Iran. Keep the powder dry, make whatever offensive and defensive plans are needed, by all means -- but not give the Iranian regime any excuse to crack down on the growing anti-government movement, or to push those on the fence into the mullahs' waiting arms. The Iranian dictatorship may disintegrate just by internal pressures alone. And although I suspect any new Iranian regime will refuse to give up the nuclear programme, the programme's goals will likely become far more peaceful. MV

    • 20:31

A mentality that treats women like slaves and property, which men can mistreat is a big problem in the Middle East. When this mindset changes and becomes more modern, putting an end to the honor code, etc., progress might be made. Erdogan is from Georgia and believes in the honor code. I can't forget a story by a Georgian Armenian artist who fell in love with a Georgian muslim girl who belonged to another man; and the man's honor code led him to kill the girl; and the Armenian had a hard time recovering. This cruelty of the honor code is only one problem there. Women have to be educated and contribute to the economy by working; and maybe the honor code forgotten.

It is indeed sad if the good people of Iran feel that they are being abandoned at this critical time by the free world in their struggle for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in their own beautiful country that they adore. At the same time it is tragic for us in the West to see the brutal treatment the poor Iranian citizens are subject to if they get caught publicly voicing their dissent and if they're seen by the Regime to be even loosely associated with any Western help or influence. My Iranian friend here told me how proud he was to see the brave women of Iran lead these protests and he believed that their drive will continue till success is achieved. What practical help can you see the West offering Iran's citizens right now that won't backfire on them being subject to further persecution at home?

That's what waiting for Israel and its boys in Iran. I hope I have made my point clear enough.

I am fed up of hearing all this talk of war (from all sides). All wars are unpredictable regardless of what weapons are at ones disposal. The measure of victory an defeat are also subjective - one nation may be prepared to loose all of its major population centres and infrastructure in order to 'defeat' thier enemy, however another nation may not be prepared to loose a single powerstation / town / city in pursuit of 'victory'. Also - Don't forget that a superpower has been faught to a standstill in Afghanistan by an ememy without any tanks, planes, helicoptors, satellites, balistic missiles, or heavy weapons - so imagine what would happen if they had such tools at their disposal. Please - no more talk of war.

What better way to wrap it up with a treart agianst Jewish Sate. Not unlike Hitler who attacked Jews first

High technology or Missle defence systems maybe prevent a few missles but what if tens of missles fired simultaneously? Obviously most of them will strike Israel However you should also pay attention to one issue: Israel is quite likely not to use Arrows against Iranian missles if they are not heading to Tel Aviv, that is they will use limited supplies of Arrow missles to protect only Tel Aviv not rest of the Israel. Seconly Arrows and F16 maybe effective against Air Iranian Air forces but what if 1000 kamikazes full of ten tonnes of explosive each how many of them Israel can shoot down? 100-150, 200? Still 800 Iranian Planes will strike Israel Iran produces its own planes, despite they are tecnologically copy of old Phantoms 800 kamikaze phantoms are sufficient to make Israel off the map.

I am very fond of the Iranian people and this is not a fight between the Israelis and the Iranian people. Unfortunately, however, the people always pay the price for the lunacy of the leadership of all countries. Thus, I hope you are right that a transformation in Iran will take place soon. Otherwise, I am afraid that a real calamity will be visited on the ME. The Iranian leadership keeps pouring fuel on a very out of control fire. Regards.

If one of the facilities is destroyed there will be fallout that will spread across border and water by wind and infect the land and people of neighbouring countries. Countries whose people have nothing to do with the Iranian/Israeli conflict, this will garner anti-israeli sentiment in the international community. Also its good to note that what the iranian minister did was issue a warning to israel, giving them casius belli in the impending attack.

After a surprise attack By Saddams Iraqi forces Iran battled Iraq to a standstill over many years. In spite of losing hundreds of thousands of people and in spite of the fact that Iraq used chemical wmd against them, Iran slowly began to turn the tide and crossed into Iraqi territory. After this, the great powers stepped in and hastily ended the war. The point is that Iran will be like no other foe which Israel has encountered. The IDF were spanked and sent home by Hizbollah in the 2006 war. The IDF will avoid another such embarrassment by continuing to restrict their efforts to Gaza.

i think the best way to prevent the war is to be ready for it. in my opinion the only reason that there is no war yet between iran and is real that the israelies know very well of the iranians' militray capiblities and their detrmination that they will strike back if attacked.

Of course there is another scenario. The "Huge War Games" could well turn out to be a "Huge Crackdown" on the opposition. That is no more than an assumption which should not be taken seriously, since the crackdown has not ceased. So, what is the 7 th of December..? Will FREEDOM become part of the rooftop chanting.? Good luck to the great people of Iran. To you as well my sweet Kitty. Meow.

Ignorance knows no bounds....do you know that almost all of Iran nuclear facilities are within population centers? And please spare us the ususal crap that Israel only targets militay targets. As evident by Gaza and Lebanon II, we saw scores of dairy factories, UN/Red Cross outposts and/or ambulances, roads, airports, civilian caravans of cars escaping the ravagery, sweage systems, power stations, on and on... we all saw it. Hypocricy indeed...

If Israel attacked Iran's nuke facilities, and Iran responds by sending missiles to Tel-Aviv, it would be interesting to see how the world responds to the fact that Iran would be purposely targeting civilian areas. My guess, not a whimper, and Israel would probably be charged with war crimes for attacking Iran's nuke facilities and be labeled an aggressive nuisance. Hypocrisy is trendy these days, especially where Israel is concerned.

The last time a US alligned country tried that, even with assistance from the US, they lost. And those with fantasies of the Iranian opposition welcoming an Israeli (or US) attack, should check out the results of the US thinktank Terror Free Tomorrow's poll in Iran. Widespread support for the nuclear program, widespread distrust of the US and Israeli governments. The Soviets would have had more support in the US for an attack there.

require navy and air force. navy to sink and destroy iranian assets, and thus tie up their harbours, Air force to take out petrochemical assets, nuke assets ammo dumps and infrastructure. So Iran is quite vulnerable . ISrael has Arrow 2 to defend against incomming missiles Iran has..... well... nothing Iran should just clam up and stiop incitement... but they cant help themselves can they. They may bring on a war they cant handle because of their big mouths

Dont blow off Yonatan. If IArael had commandoes on the ground in Syria before taking out its nuke facility, what makes it so impossible to have IDf commandos on Iranian soil when those 20,000 pound penetrator bombs begin to take out various enrichment compounds. Iran is on shaky ground, and is trying to be appear strong, when in fact she is terribly weak. With no air force to speak of, little armnour and even less of a navy, she should play nice in the ME sandbox instead of sticking shapr stikcs in everyones eyes. more so ISraels. Everyone know ISrael has no sense of humour , and will take our Iranian assets if it feels the threats are real.. Pay attention Kitty ya only got nine lives and Ahmedinajacket is prepared to sacrifice every last one of them

It is not unlikely that Israel can get away with those attacks, but If I were Israeli I would expect the boots on the ground attacks to be costly in terms of manpower lost and considerable civilian losses (Israel has been fortunate to avoid them in its previous wars).

... are a little more difficult politically and spiritually to determine more precisely, it appears. Zolnour is one cleric that should lay off the Jack Daniels (being illegaly imported into Iran for legal, private consumption as a mullah favorite, at least as revealed by a trafficker caught in the act in Iraq as he was about to cross over into Iran) before mouthing off as it could affect his aim and any slight tremble in his firing finger might direct his double-headed missile a little west towards the Dome of the Rock and Al Aksa instead. Iran the bully sees no problem in firing thousands of missiles into Israel through its proxies over the years but Allah-forbid that even one Israeli missile strike the motherland, or the regime will start crying to Mommy.

drills about countering a two-pronged Israeli land, sea and paratrooper attack, against Iranian missile sites on the one hand, and a hunt-and-kill search for hidden nuclear sites, on the other hand? Israel cannot and doesn't need to conquer and occupy all Iran; it only needs to destroy those missile sites and nuclear sites. A bombing of all Iranian oil wells at a later stage would be a good idea as well.

This winter will be everything but cool in Iran. I pray for the israeli politicians to shut up and not give any excuse to the regime so the people can carry on their movement. Never has the regime been so discredited and now openly hated. For 30 years they shouted death to this, death to that - now people chant 'death to no one'. There is a lot going on with virtually no mention in western media. So blatently ignoring the plight of people that it has become a joke with the opposition that the west is for the regime (otherwise they wouldn't aid it to this extent). The next big show is going to be on Dec 7th. Fasten your seatbelts. WE ARE THE MEDIA!!!

No doubt the Iranian regime feels threatened. Supplies of weapons have been blocked to the proxy states. The supply routes are well known. These huge war games may well be a pretext,in this case a photo op of immense military might..?, however there is a downside. Both Israel and the US will be able to monitor said war games. Weaknesses will become obvious. The neighborhood is heating up, once more. Lets all hope for a cool minded winter season. To the detriment of Iran.
