Clinton also said West discussing 'pressure and sanctions' to stop nukes without harming civilians.
By News Agencies Tags: Hillary Clinton Iran nuclear Israel newsIran on Tuesday welcomed U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's remarks that there the West would not insist on a hard-and-fast deadline for starting dialogue over the Islamic Republic's contentious nuclear program.
Clinton said Monday that the United States has begun discussing with its allies methods of "pressure and sanctions" to take on Iran. She emphasized that the goal was to keep the door to dialogue open, so as stop the Islamic regime without harming innocent civilians.
"We share the same idea with her. Deadlines are meaningless," Iranian government spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on response on Tuesday..
The U.S. and other Western allies accuse Iran of working to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charge and says its program is for peaceful purposes.
"Our goal is to pressure the Iranian government, particularly the Revolutionary Guard elements without contributing to the suffering of ordinary [Iranians] who deserve better than what they are currently receiving," Clinton said on Monday.
A State Department official said that the goal was to keep the "door to dialogue" open, but added that the U.S. "would not wait forever."
"We have avoided using the term "deadline" ourselves, since we have made clear that the door to dialogue will remain open," said the official. "But we have also made clear that we will not wait forever, and discussions on pressure and sanctions with our international partners have already begun."
Reiterating Clinton's remarks, the official said: It's not appropriate to comment on the details of those discussions, except to say that our objective is to pressure the Iranian government without contributing to the suffering of ordinary Iranian citizens."
According to the official, the U.S. was growing wary of Iran's continued defiance of international demands, which he said had contributed to the recent discussion with its allies.
"The results of our efforts to engage the Iranians directly have not been encouraging. And we remain disappointed at Iran's non-response to a proposal for the Tehran Research Reactor," said the official.
"The Iranian government essentially announced a deadline to receive a positive response to their unacceptable counter-offer," he added, referring to the West's offer to export uranium enrichment off Iranian territory. "This sort of behavior only increases our concerns and those of others in the international community, about Iran's intentions."
The official said that the U.S. and its allies remained committed to the Iranian opposition's efforts to reform the Islamic system, amid a violent crackdown which has left dozens of demonstrators dead and hundreds more arrested.
"Iran is going through a turbulent period. Even as we seek to address our concerns about Iran's nuclear program, including through offers of direct dialogue, we stand firmly with those in Iran who are peacefully demanding their universal rights to assemble, to speak publicly, and seek decent treatment from their government," he said

The only language anybody understands is force. This includes Israel, USA, Iran and anybody who has common sense. Iran wants the bomb because it understands the language of force very well. Without it, it will be bullied like it was in 1953 and 1980. This is something Israel comprehended 50 years ago.
The mantra of "patience won't be there forever" is Obama's stubborn stupidity in action. Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards are happy with Obama's naiveté, heading towards their nuclear bomb.
...are becoming a laughingstock, particularly of 3rd world dictatorships
Only thing Iran understands is force the sooner the USA bombs the nuke sites the sooner this stalemate will be over. Sadly the USA has a President at the moment that lacks courage and has no idea of the real world.Maybe if Obama grew a pair he would take his job seriously.
Curious with the statement and how it is used. Politicos donot speak english, no mater where they come from. Why can:t they all just put it in simple terms. What is the agenda by trying to twist words, being clever or by bypassing the un-educated? If Iran is right about what it intends then what is all the noise about? If they want it for peaceful purposes then why not show the world by being open. One speaks of peaceful use then speaks of destroying other countries. Well what is the general population to belive when one double speaks! It is or it is not, that is the real question. Hiding what they are doing can be avoided by simply leting others see what they are doing. By hiding what they are doing it seems to point in another direction. NOW WHAT IS ONE TO BELEIVE? I know what I think and it is they have something to hide! JOHN
There is no realistic scenario where Iran (regardless of the regime) would give up their capacity to enrich uranium. Therefore, Western countries pushing for sanctions are doing so not to get Iran to abandon enrichment, but to weaken Iran so as to prepare for military aggression against Iran. Since the only realistic scenario of such aggression is to retard Iran's economic development, Western nations are simply trying to stifle Iran and the Persian culture in order to dominate the region. Ironically, the only reasonable way for Iran to avoid domination is to become a nuclear state. Yeah, nuclear deadlines are meaningless, the only game in town is domination/submission.
