Iran charges 5 Argentines over 1994 Jewish center bombing

Tehran reiterates accusations of Buenos Aires conspiracy to implicate Iran in terror attack on AMIA.

By The Associated Press Tags: Iran Israel terrorism Jewish Argentina

Prosecutors accused five Argentines with falsely implicating a group of Iranians in the 1994 terrorist bombing of a Buenos Aires Jewish center, the state IRNA news agency said. Argentines rejected the claims.

The action came a week after Interpol granted a request from Argentina to put five Iranians and a Lebanese man on its most-wanted list for the 1994 blast that killed 85 people and wounded 200.

In its action Tuesday, Tehran called for the five, who live in Argentina, to appear in an Iranian court to face the allegations. But Argentines linked to the case quickly dismissed the request.

"This summons by Iran will have no effect, and is seen in the international community as something without sense that will only serve to confuse and delay," Jose Adaszko, vice president of the Argentine Jewish cultural center, said in comments reported by news agency AJN.

Iran has strongly denied that the Iranians were involved and has accused Interpol of bowing to U.S. and Israeli pressure to issue the warrants.

The dispute is steeped in geopolitical drama at a time of high tension between Iran and the West over Tehran's suspect nuclear program and U.S. claims that Iran is supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan - claims that the Islamic Republic denies.

The summons was at least the second attempt by Iran to get the group to face Tehran's accusations. In August, Iranian television reported that the men were ordered to appear within days, a request the Argentine foreign ministry quickly rejected.

The ministry said at the time it was difficult not to see the summons as a political reprisal to Argentine efforts to get hold of the Iranians allegedly involved in the community center bombing.

IRNA, in a report carried on its English-language Web site, said the five Argentines asked to appear at the Tehran Justice Department are former Interior Minister Carlos Corach; president of the Jewish center Ruben Beraja; Judge Juan Jose Galeano; and prosecutors Eamon Mullen and Jose Barbaccia.

The IRNA report cited Iranian Deputy Prosecutor General Yadollah Alizadeh as saying Iran would demand that Interpol issue arrest warrants for them if they do not appear.

Alizadeh was quoted as saying the five Argentines have been charged with making a case against Tehran and hiring individuals of anti-government affiliations to testify against Iran.

"It is total nonsense. It isn't in agreement with any regulation or norm," said Sergio Burstein, a relative of a victim of the attack.

No one has been brought to justice for the bombing at the center when an explosives-laden van detonated, leveling the seven-story building.

Argentine prosecutors contend the plot was hatched at a 1993 meeting in Mashad, Iran, and the Lebanon-based militant Shiite group Hezbollah was entrusted with carrying it out.

They say witness accounts, other testimony and telephone and travel documents prove the meeting occurred.

Iran says it has evidence showing such a meeting never took place and pledged this week to defend the wanted Iranians, despite the Argentine arrest warrants.

Interpol cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects, but can put government leaders on the spot for letting suspects move freely.

The five wanted Iranians are Iran's former intelligence chief, a former cultural attache in Tehran's embassy in Argentina, a former Iranian diplomat, a former head of the elite paramilitary Revolutionary Guards, and a Guards general.

Interpol also named Lebanese Hezbollah militant Imad Moughnieh, one of the world's most sought terrorism suspects, among those wanted in the bombing.

Thousands of people marking the anniversary of the bombing in Buenos Aires, on July 18, 2004. The sign reads 'Another anniversary without justice.'

I am against the Iranian regime but I have an extra iota of brain to be able to differentiate between the people of Iran and the government. If you go back and read all of my post, that's the main point being conveyed. From what exactly did you deduce that I was saying anything against the validity of the known in regards to the bombing? Really bizarre....

PersianKitty: Since first moment, justice accused Iranian ambassador and triple border cell, even the block of car.bomb was found, and the operation entirely revealed. After that, being islamic Menem president time, 14 million dollars were payed to judge, president and some other people in order to hide evidence. Evidence was rescued now, by the same prosecutor, named Nisman, and evidence is enough for Interpol too, who considered it enough not once but two times. Conspirative theories are pretty good for Holywood, but this is real life, and 86 people died in the blast. Iranian functionaries threat the country several times, several means, that they will put "third bomb". Maybe we must be afraid, and let the crime without justice, and say "may be Zionists, may be eskimos, are guilty" But they are not guilty: komeini boys, Hezbollah in first stage of development, put those bombs.

Is it possible that the "Iranians" were just another bunch of Zionists, as were the "Moslems" who were caught in Egypt in 1954 and turned out to be a group of Israeli sabateurs, pretending to be Arabs. (leaving false evidence at their bombings) Even Haaretz, at the time, had this to say, "The trial "proved" that the Egyptian rulers do not hesitate to "INVENT THE MOST FANTASTIC ACCUSATIONS" if it suits them". They did conspirancy using their Embassy and ones brand-new Mosque in Buenos Aires, they organized the cell in Triple Border Arg-Paraguay-Brazil, where Lenabese people work for Hezbollah and send lots of money to Lebanon. Even the blast was recognized in a clerical meeting. Doubts are: about local agents, and about Sirian complicity. But iranians registered mark is sure.

    • 01:29

Whatever the old testament says about punishment for certain crimes, jews have never used those punishments. It's all well recorded in the history books. On the contrary, those who have followed the old testament have today more or less all abandoned all kinds of torture, and capital punishment. (US being an exception, though their capital punishment is only used for severe crimes). Personal freedom, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, the free press,e press etc. etc. is what the old testaments followers stand for today, and have been practicing for a long time. The followers of the koran on the other hand are not having any of those freedoms at all. Not only do they not have those freedoms, they are standing completly still in their development towards such freedoms. Honour killings only occurrs in islamic culture(which doesn't mean it's leagal in all but still). The behavior and morals are such that people actually commit honour killing under islam.

Commandments to stone adulterers and those who abused their parents for instance, were no more than de jure 'honor killings'.

Persian Kitty #48 - should people grow in isolation?
    • William
    • 15.11.07
    • 00:28

Perhaps going through a "dark age" is required for all religions, indeed all people, in order to reach a more enlightened time. But, the times you refer to, hundreds of years ago, were a time when total community could exist in isolation to each other, and were forced to repeat the same mistakes as others. Today is NOT the same. With globalization and instant communication, one can know of other's mistakes quickly, if not witnessing them on live newscasts. To say that Arabs deserve to go through a Dark Age is akin to given credence to their right to maim and kill even though every knows it's not acceptable. Hell, we can even witness the idiocy on daily news, with the perpetrators telling us how right they are to do it...live!! Do not discount the ability for Arabs to live in today's age with today's rules. They deserve better than that, and to be held accountable.

It doesn`t make sense at all." I wonder, Eric, is it possible for a population of 15 or 20 thousand Jews (which you call 'large') to say BOO to a population of 70 millions or more in Iran? In the meantime, Iran is more likely to pick on foreign Jews rather than its own Jews, unless it is really backed up into a corner.

Umm, you do know that honor killing and genital mutilation aren't part of the Iranian culture, don't you? In fact, while a muslim majority country, Iran isn't Arab at all but Persian. There's a Turkish proverb saying: "Stick the needle into yourself (to see how it hurts) before you thrust the packing-needle into others." You will have to take yourself out of your own experiences and put in someone else's shoes to understand how hurtful and painful self-righteous generalizing comments of the likes of Cipora and Co really is. The spread of hatred is the easiest thing to do and as you see, pretty rampant from all sides on this talkback. When was the last time you read anything compassionate towards the other side on here? There is a difference between speaking against certain repugnant aspects and constant badgering of xenophobic nature. Show me ONE TIME that Cipora said anything compassionate or empathetic about anyone other than Jews. One example would do.

These iranians then launch a suit in iran not only to block their extradition, but also to prove their innocence to the iranian court (to block their extradition). Who then must the court see? those who would argue a case to try the named suspects; this is commonly known as an arraignment. It is absolutely normal for such procedings to take place in iran, the country of residence (that has habeus corpus)

We're much smarter today...maybe. Only 27 years ago, Iranians did the same stupid tactic. Surprised? Today, Arabs threaten to use the same tactic, only instead of guns, they carry suicide belts in an attempt to kill atleast one person...civilian or military. What next...Hizbollah accusing and indicting several Israeli commandos in killing IDF soldiers and throwing them over the border as a pretext to war and damaging Nasrallah's good name?? Or better yet, the Sudanese government indicting the black African Darfurians in created a genocidal situation in which several Darfurians actually got plastic surgery to look like Sudanese Arabs in order perpetrate the attack and sully the good name of Sudan! In Iran, 1+1 definitely does not equal 2...by penalty of death!

Hello northern neighbour Maral. I can't speak on behalf of ehud but I can tell you what I think. Firstly I disagree with Kippora and found her opinions not at all pleasent. Still, it is her opinions about certain aspects of a certain religion. Most religions see other religions as lower and more ridiculous. Other wise they would have become one with the other religions. As for Israelis, we see us jews as a nation not a race. We come from all over and have many colours and faces but we share something stronger than religion. I speak on behalf of the jews in Israel and not of the other religions or ethnic minorities. It is very complicated to describe why we feel the way we do regardless of whether or not we are religious but we have a bond which is rooted stronger than the belief in god and the connection to one specific country. This is why Antisemitism is not being described as racist for so long. And also why the term antsemitism has been applied to jews only.

"Oh, and flagellating isn`t just a Shia thing. You might want to do some research into it." Some Jews in I believe Germany had the custom to flagellate themselves back in maybe the 1100s(give or take a few hundred years) or so. They would do that and they'd also roll around in the snow and eat really poor quality food. Apparently they felt it would help purify the soul. When one Rabbi heard about this, he said that his horse did the same thing and it was still a horse.

Ah, well, just ask the Israelis, who are Jews, but insist they are a RACE. In closing, though, saying "people who flagellate themselves.. also tend to flagellate others!" is an indication of paranoia, nothing. further.

Only a few weeks ago I listened to a BBC radio documentary regards this tragic event. It raises many questions unanswered about who actually perpetrated the blast and suggests the likely involvement of the US in putting Iran in the dock for this. Bottom of the page is a link to a BBC article which gives an inkling of the problems. This case has only resurfaced as a result of US pressure in the light of it's own intentions vis a vis Iran. Is there recent precedent for Western duplicity in subverting miscarriages of justice? You bet your sweet arse there is. There is the Lockerbie bomb blast, which similarly resulted in a likely miscarriage of Justice. Ironically on that occasion a Libyan was indicted for the crime. He is almost certainly not guilty and will likely be released on further appeal. The likely culprits for that one? Ironically Iran! (using Syrian based agents to carry out the task). Probably as a direct retaliation for the Iranian airliner shot down in the Gulf by the US only 6 months earlier. On that occasion, Iran/Syria were not pursued . A White House leak later revealed that Margaret Thatcher and George Bush had agreed to downplay the investigation for fear of endangering hostages in Lebanon - almost all held by Syrian and Iranian proxy groups. Following the Gulf war, in which Syria became a crucial western ally, the PFLP-GC and their Syrian and Iranian sponsors were officially exonerated, and the blame was shifted to Libya. Few of the relatives now believe that it was anything to do with the Libya who was subsequently jailed. http://www.guardian.co.uk/Lockerbie/0,,431005,00.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6612951.stm

Iran did not target Argentina in their bobmibng of the Jewsih Center, which happenned to be located in Argentina where there is alarge Jewish Argentinian population. The Aryan Iranian leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran were after the Jews. Two factors that prompted Iranian selection of the target ( Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires) 1)The Jewsih Center was a symbol of Jewsih life 2)Argentina has always had many Nazi sympathizers in theor police,Airforce and the Army. This may be tempting for Iranian authorities behind the bombing. There are many fascist Nazi sympathisers in Argentinian hence Iranians had good reasons to expect a slow investigations after the terror bombing. THATS WHAT HAPPENNED.

Iran embassy activity before and after the bombings are quite suspicious. Bombings where executed with local help (nazi police officers among them), but it was mastered abroad. There were not a single act like this in the Argentinean history, prior those bombings. Argentina is a democratic country, so those iranian officials can defend themselves with all legal help. We argentineans demand Justice!

Do you know about the promises that Carlos Menem ( the Argentine president of Syrian family at that time) made to Iran about the Nuclear project, and after beign president, he did all what the USA wanted him to do, and that He didn't gave back Iran all the money they out in his campaign? You cannot call everybody a racist who is appaled by self-flagellation - after all it is (literally) a bloody tradition. You cannot just say - that's a traidition, if you don't respect it, that's racism (by the way what has religion to do with race?). The problem is also that people who flagellate themselves "because of deep-seated guilt" also tend to flagellate others!

What is their crime, to pursue the Iranian thread of the bombing? This is more a kid's game than something serious. Iran would have the right to pursue any crime commited in Iran, but if, and only if this people commited a crime, they commited a crime in Argentina, not in Iran. Iran can ask Interpol to bring those guys and Interpol will laugh in their faces. What a farse, AND I AM STILL WAITING JUSTICE FOR MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
