The state-run Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute and Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co. are expected to start building a 5-megawatt reactor November 1 at the Jordan University for Science and Technology near the northern city of Irbid.
A planning ministry statement said Monday the reactor will be "fully commissioned within five years and a nuclear power plant will be built by 2017."
Resource-barren Jordan is developing a peaceful nuclear program with U.S. support. But the U.S. has expressed reservations over Jordan's desire to enrich its large reserves of uranium.
Jordan says alternative energy sources are needed to generate electricity and desalinate water.
Last month, Jordan's King Abdullah accused Israel of trying to prevent his kingdom from developing a peaceful nuclear program.
The king revealed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that Israel had approached South Korea and France with requests to refrain from selling Jordan nuclear technology. Israel's "underhanded" actions are adding tension to already strained relations with Jordan, bringing ties between the two countries to their lowest point since they signed a peace agreement in 1994, the king said.
"There are countries, Israel in particular," Abdullah told the Wall Street Journal, "that are more worried about us being economically independent than the issue of nuclear energy, and have been voicing their concerns."
"There are many such reactors in the world and a lot more coming, so [the Israelis must] go mind their own business," he added.
Israeli officials denied any action to prevent Jordan from developing nuclear energy.

where its not their business
It's odd, I really don't think of Korea as a nation rich enough to build reactors for anyone. Moreover, I really don't understand what's this intense desire for nuclear power. By generating nuclear power, you are creating intensly dangerous radioactive trash, which requires a whole lot of management to prevent from wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. Seems like more trouble than it's worth.
You go first though. And to those who say that Iran has bad intent because it hid its nuclear program, I have 2 questions: 1-How was it hidden if the US help start and fund it? 2-What does that say about Israel? A country that won't even admit to having nukes!
You dont "think of korea as a nation rich enough to build reactors for anyone"? First, SOUTH Korea is the 15 biggest economy in the world, and second, this is not the first reactor Korea is building for someone. they've already signed a deal with Turkey to help them with their second reactor as well...if you're thinking about riches and images of Kim Jong-Il and his starving people come to mind, you're thinking of the wrong half.
They are definitely capable of helping Jordan.
SK is providing a $70 million loan guarantee to Jordan. The actual construction of the power plant will be done by Daewoo, presumably under a contract with the Jordanian government. Win-win. SK engineering contractors are amongst the most advanced in the world. OK? Jordan probably wants nuclear power for the same reason as France, the US, Sweden, Finland, the UK, India....and Iran. Israel should mind its own business.
Why and for what reason is not your business. Since Israel gave its self the right to steal lands and BUILD a reactor with more than 200 atomic bombs, Jordan has the right to exploit its resources of Uranium
It's fortunes may swing with those of South East Asian foreign exchanges but surely you've heard of Hyundai? Samsung? Only Japan and China are richer in Asia. The average internet user enjoys 10 times more bandwidth than eve a US citizen. South Korea's export economy is bigger than France's. As for nuclear power, with the advent of third generation facilities, these have become not only more efficient but capable of reprocessing most of the nuclear waste produced.
Then don't hide your nuclear program for 18 years and threaten to destroy other states. That way the world will help you, but you won't get nuclear weapons which is why Iran did the stated above.
israel has hidden its nuclear program for over 45 years... the whole world knows and even Olmert admitted to it on TV interview... yet the US signed a pact to give them nuclear tech, also gives unconditional support to prtoct from U.N... French made their dimona nuke plant.... why would israeli need to buy nuclear capable submarines from Germany... so don't give me any crap like israel hasn't said to destroy another nation... for last 10 years who has killed more, more UN violations, more human rights violations, whose leaders are alleged for war crimes HAARETZ pls publish
Let US and other develop countries assure to meet energy need of all Middle Eastern countries including Iran and Israel. And let whole Middle East be free of Nuclear program. This might bring much needed peace and justice in the region. Short of this is hypocracy and that that can not go for long.
explain why israel can bot others cannot..
Hide it's nuclear program for 18 years til discovered, ran by religious fanatics and called for the destruction of another state. :3
yes but iran has never in its modern nation invaded or attacked any other nation. while israel in the last four years only, killed 1500 in lebanon, 1500 in gaza plus all the human right violations in the west bank and gaza that do not compare to iranian human right violations
Iran never hide, if you read the rules for the NPT a nation must declare a facility ONLY 180 days prior they put nuclear material in it. Iran has therefore never violated the NPT.
1. Hide it's nuclear program for 43+ years 2. Ran by a coalition of religious fantatics and far right wing racists. 3. Called for the destruction of PLO, Hamas, Hizbulah, and frequently attacks other nations
I.e., before admitting nuclear materials
Now South Korea screams about some "torpedoing of her ship" and pushes the World towards the nuclear war.
So South Korea helped North Korea develop Nukes?? You obviosuly don't have a clue about world affairs and that South and North have been enemies for the last 60 years!!! Absolute Sweden?? Absolute Rubbish!!
Actually, to be honest it's the British designed Magnox reactor which the North Koreans are using to generate plutonium for their nuclear weapons. Strangely, the designs for this were released in an atoms for peace conference. If anything direct your anger towards us brits rather than lovely south korea ;)
South Koreans might have asked themselves why on earth the NK ,with her Stone Age industry needs most advanced sampling oscilloscopes or high quality steel sections of huge diameter.. She didn't ,happy NK graced them with requests for it. They have even bought some items from Japan if unable to provide it themselves. South Korea has only been too happy to prop the NK regime ,lest its collapse would add 20 millions of hungry NKoreans to be supported by the South and the resulting impoverishment of the country. Now everybody needs to suffer because of this dumbness and greed of South Koreans, who ,unfazed proceed to provide Jordan with funds for nuclear reactor.
South Korea would never help the North acquire nuckear technology. Period. The United States helps guarantee her security with troops who guard a no man's land DMZ where both sides have stationed tens of thousands of troops and artillery pieces aimed at each other. Japan also hates North Korea and has been the most demanding and aggressive party to the five party talks that have been handling negotiations with North Korea. Why shouldn't Jordan have a nuclear reactor? Isn't it in Israel's best interest to have an economically strong Jordan that can absorb Palestinian refugees so that she can continue to defy international law and occupy their people?
Any?
