Poll: Americans believe Islam no more prone to violence than other faiths

Non-partisan Pew Research Center poll finds, however, that overall view of Islam has worsened over the past five years.

Americans doubt that Islam is likelier than other faiths to encourage violence, but their overall view of the religion has worsened over the past five years, a poll revealed on Tuesday.

In a survey that underlined the complex views people have about Muslims, 51 percent agreed that a Muslim center should not be built near the former site of New York's World Trade Center, compared to 34 percent who said it should be permitted.

Yet at the same time, a majority - 62 percent - said Muslims should have equal rights to build houses of worship. Just 25 percent said communities should be allowed to block the construction of mosques. The poll was conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

The poll found that by 42 percent to 35 percent, most think Islam does not incite violence more than other religions, about the same as said so last year.

But more people have unfavorable than favorable views of Islam by 38 percent to 30 percent. In 2005, it was reversed: 41 percent had favorable views, 36 percent unfavorable.

Republicans voiced negative views of Muslims by more than 2-1. Among Democrats, 41 percent had favorable opinions while 27 percent viewed them negatively. Views of Muslims were also unfavorable among independents, older people and those with less education.

The survey was conducted from Aug. 19-22 and involved landline and mobile phone interviews with 1,003 randomly chosen adults. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The academic world is a world by itself , it is mostly a theoretical dream machine . Americans do not have an idea what Islam is all about , good or bad . They are just obsessed with a theoretical equality at all costs , as this poll clearly shows .

As an American citizen for many years I can't stop wondering how far sometimes we can not see the reality . Americans see everything in good light , and their deep believe in democratic values limits their ability to realize that there are some people in this world who do not share the same values , who do not desire the same freedom that we cherish so much , who are suicidally dogmatic .

The poll figures are still rather favorable. Luckely for the US its islam population is only a very small percentage. In Europe, France f.e. already has about 10% muslims. Also Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands have large muslim populations. In all these countries muslim demands are on the rise: more and bigger mosques, own schools with seperated sexes and unscientific education (koran i.s.o. evolution, history without the holocaust, ), succesfull resistance to certain cultural expressions (exhibitions with nudity, "offensive" experimental theater, representation of the prophet, freeedom of speech in general,..). I sometimes fear a creeping introduction of sharia. The thing is: is Islam a religion of nice godfearing people or is it an ideology that fights , everything my civilisation stands for.

    Backlash after 9/11

    • 16:01

What the poll states is that there is backlash after 9/11. Placards at 9/11 say to be afraid of the islamization of america; that is a very unreal fear; that is backlash. I think Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor Koch are wonderful people and great mayors for NY. You can read Mayor Koch's blog in JPost for a wonderful essay on the community center controversy. I even knew people who were not muslim that were harassed due to ignorance of people; i.e. an Iranian Jew and an Iranian Farsi; even a dark complexioned person was beat up. War demonizes the enemy. I feel sorry for my friends who are a victim of this prejudice; don't you????

The legitimate concerns about the location of the Park 51 Outreach Center have been overwhelmed by plenty of blatant racist and religiously bigoted claims - as evidenced by the black non-muslim massively abused just a couple of days ago... America's insular nature in terms of world affairs has meant it's quite rich territory for those with religious biases.

You get the gist of what I am saying... And yet these summary by the Pew commission presented this outregeous document which belies the actual truth. I am lost for words. I have not read any esponses yet,no doubt there will be some who would not object to its findings.

in the last century alone, European Christians killed more than 80 million in just two wars. One Christian country committed a holocaust. Yet no body accuses Christianity of killing. The Old Testament, Judaism's religious scripture, contains a record of all the massacres ancient Israelits committed. Yet none accuses Jews of being advocate of murder. I think Hate for Islam has to do with history. Islam is also the main geopolitical rival. It competes with Christianity on the hearts and minds of men.

This article does not represent the truth. Yes Christians committed atrocities, as far as Judaism and its precepts are thiousands of years old, and it does not follow the ancient traditions and never have done. Quoting from the OT is not a fair assumption. Christianity has a very bloody history, but then since we are talking of the here and now..i.e the 21st century your argument makes it redundent. Where as,Islam still follows their traditions of converting by the sword, treating gentiles as non people and calls them pigs and monkeys and worse. I have read the Quran on several occasions by the writers who have editorialized it through the decades after the Prophet's demize. I will leave the gentile alone okay. Why do you muslims kill each other?why the are there such divisions in your interpretations of the Quran..i.e Shiites versus Sunnis. What is so sad hearing in the news the tragedy of Pakistan's deluge with thousands suffering, and yet I hear of the daily attacks by the terrorists. They are in dire straits and have to deal with additional killings of their people. Why is that? And where is the peaceful Islam? You tell me that Muslim

overshadowing most destructive Muslims. Some of the eruptions from the Israeli ant hill are disgustingly violent as well. Anyway, you cannot assume that all or even most Muslims are destructive or medieval just because some Muslim states and persons are unbelievably backwards. With the same logics, you cannot assume that an average Scandinavian is bloodthirsty just because America, and to some extent Britain, are stained with the blood of others. Neither can you accuse a common Tunisian Jew of being barbaric, just because many Jewish Israelis seem to be brought up in Spartan war camp.

Let's read that sentence again: "The poll found that by 42 percent to 35 percent, most think Islam does not incite violence more than other religions." So, 35% do think Islam incite violence more than other creeds. I would be interesting to ask the same question about Christianity, Budhism, Judaism, etc. And then compare the results. Hint? In spite of all the orchestrated negative & hateful campains against Islam, about 1/4 million Americans embraced Islam since 9/11! Just google "Islam in America", "women who converted to Islam", or "scientists who converted to islam" and you'll see why right wing America is in a panic mode. Yes, Islam is THE FASTET GROWING religion in the world, and the new converts come from a wide spectrum of ethnic, religious, economic, academic, and age groups. Just listen to their testimonies why they embraced Islam and you'll see that these people made their decisions after taking a close look at Islam. The list of scientists is amazing and explains the panic that churches all over America are experiencing!

Dear commenter, first of all the numbers you're talking about should be checked and verified..therefore in this discussion their weight is 0. Anyhow, should someone have converted to islam that's why during these years the western press and media have pushed so strongly on the favour to islam for a mix of ignorance ( western world has completely forgotten the past 1400 years of violence come from islam over the free wolrd ), economic interests ( yes, sausi arabia pays very well the useful idiots) and a sense of guilt coming from the false perception that western bad guys have invaded the good muslim headcutters guys. Now the wind is changing cause the bad guys are remembering and they are rediscovering the islam is the based on violence and destruction of the " different"; violence is the mean for achiving the the core purpose which is conquer the world...arab colonialism..nothing more than this. American people unfortunately are not so quick to get to understand things in general but in the europe people has understood and that's why this will be the next battle field between freedom and islam and in AFRICA Christianity is spreading wider than in any other part of the world ( thanks Jesus ) . That's why islamists Al shebab are really in the panic fighting in somalia for application of sharia.

They say it and we genties are supposed to believe it.But since their actions prove the reverse what are people to interpret it? ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS NO? That is the problem and only deluded people would swallow the UNTRUTH. if there is hate, there must have been a reason for it,don't you think? Besides why has Islam, suddenly become so barbaric now in the 21st century? What is their purpose? if anyone can giv eme a cogent answer to this relatively new phenomenon I'd be much obliged. If one goes back only a few deades ago, there was no mention of Islam and its hateful proliferation throughout the world. Why are they doing it? Perhaps their plan is to conquer the entire world. Bear in mind Christianity has the largest population in the world. But they do not impose their beliefs to anyone. in the Catholic Church you cannot be converted unless you go tthrough rigorous learning. And after due process you may if you pass and then converssion takes place. Finally there is no denying that Islam has been the most divisive religion in the 21st century with grave consequences. If Christianity is blamed for passed misdemenours I agree totally. But then that was centuries ago,NOT ANY MORE. If any of you disputes my assumptions feel free to correct me. Thank you

America (50% or so) elected a clueless and unknown socialist as president. However, 50% or so didn't. America's gotten too soft and uncaring about the basics of what America is supposed to be about. However, the November elections will show, I am sure, that overall we've realized that we made a big mistake. We are realizing too, I believe, tha ISLAM is NOT a religion of peace at all. 9/11 and other events have proven this. We've gotten slow...but we're learning again. Hitler a Christian? That is crazy thinking. No true Christian could do what he did. I, and many other Christians I know, love Israel and the Jewish people.

Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death. For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads. Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him. But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death (I like this one especially, whoever came up with that one deserves some credit). If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death--the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you. A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.

There's a difference - none of these have been operative for a thousand years or more, whereas Iran, Saudi Arabia and many other countries where Sharia is strictly applied are still doing all this.

While it may say that, if you keep reading you'll also find it saying that the death statement was never used, even if those were crimes and punishments were made with the spirits of the era. It continues to read that there are so many intentional burdens to carry out a death penalty that it's not workable, cause a single innocent person charged wrongly is worse than setting 1,000 criminals free.

That while you can say Christianity and Judaism moved from the dark ages, Islam remained the same, including their punishment laws of throwing stones. The dark era is much more prone to violence than the modern era.

Not this American. I believe what I see about the muslims. They are the most violent of all the world religions. There are only three types of muslims: 1) There are jihadists actively killing and fighting for the world domination by islam, 2) There are those who will become jihadists killing and fighting for the world domination by islam, 3) there are those who support the first two categories of bloodthirsty, murdering jihadists (and wannabees) who are fighting and killing to make islam the world dominant religion. It says Islam doesn't incite any more violence. Not that violence is not committed in the name of Islam. If a Christian (or whatever) called himself Jewish and went on a murderous rampage throughout the land leaving stars of David wherever he went would that make Judaism a "violent" religion?

The poll shows just how confused Americans are right now. There are those who are rabidly anti-Muslim. Those determined to wage a Holy Crusade against Islam; and those who are not bigoted, yet are swayed by intense propaganda. I had a grandfather who was bigoted against Jews. He was also bigoted against Catholics. He was a farmer from upstate NY. My father was not bigoted against either, though he had deep dark doubts about religion. There is a Texas saying, "I don't care what the sheep do at night." Americans, aside from those on the extreme right, are not inclined to religious bigotry. But that observation could have been made 60 years ago when those who were bigots, were bigoted against Jews and Catholics just as mindlessly as their grandchildren are against Muslims, are today.

Islam is generally non-violence, but if there is violence, and West and especially the USA have brought it upon themselves through their skewed foreign policy and insane recognition and legitimization of Zionism. Regrettable though such violence may be, it is not unexpected.

is much older than Zionism. "The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter." (from the web site The Religion of Peace). A few places: Qur'an (8:12), Qur'an (8:39) ,Qur'an (9:5) ..

The events of 911 and the 911 Mosque has become the biggest advertisement for the Muslim religion. Even though the campaign against Islam is strong and will remain strong in the foreseeable future, the debate and the curiosity amongst non Muslims is giving a strong foothold for Islam in the US and the West. As an example, I recently saw a video on YouTube where this typically dressed American teenager explain why Obama is not a Muslim. You can't tell if he was a Muslim or not but I believe this person is a Muslim because he was in fact teaching his viewers about the five pillars of Islam by negatively presenting Obama as a non believer of Islam. His idea was to teach the five pillars of Islam and to show what Muslims look like and how they worship God all over the world. I also know for a fact that when there is a negatively hyped event like this, most ordinary Muslims engage in propagating and calling non Muslims to the religion. Propagating the religion by a Muslim has the biggest reward with God.

Twenty five percent either don't know or don't believe that religious freedom is a constitutional right. Apparently there is a stunning lack in the educational system of the country. Ah well, it matches the percentage who don't know or don't think Hawaii was part of the United States in the 1960s.

Germans doubt that Judaism is likelier than other faiths to encourage violence, but their overall view of the religion has worsened over the past five years, a poll revealed on Tuesday. In a survey that underlined the complex views people have about Jews, 51 percent agreed that a Jewish center should not be built near the former site of the Reichtag, compared to 34 percent who said it should be permitted. Yet at the same time, a majority - 62 percent - said Jews should have equal rights to build houses of worship. Just 25 percent said communities should be allowed to block the construction of mosques. The poll was conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. The poll found that by 42 percent to 35 percent, most think Judaism does not incite violence more than other religions, about the same as said so last year. But more people have unfavorable than favorable views of Judaism by 38 percent to 30 percent. In 1940, it was reversed: 41 percent had favorable views, 36 percent unfavorable. Republicans voiced negative views of Jews by more than 2-1. Among Democrats, 41 percent had favorable opinions while 27 percent viewed them negatively. Views of Jews were also unfavorable among independents, older people and those with less education. The survey was conducted from Aug. 19-22 and involved landline and mobile phone interviews with 1,003 randomly chosen adults. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
