Iran launches cartoon website aimed at questioning the Holocaust

Yad Vashem slams website claiming to show that "the killing of 6 million Jews in the Second World War known as the Holocaust was a sheer lie".

Iran has launched a website with cartoons on the Holocaust aimed at undermining the historic dimensions of the mass murder of Jews during World War II, Fars news agency reported Thursday.

The site is financed by a non-governmental cultural foundation and mainly based on a cartoon book on the Holocaust published in 2008, which contained satirical cartoons and texts aimed at questioning the Holocaust.

The website, which opens to the Pink Panther theme song by Henry Mancini, reportedly wants to continue challenging the issue and show that "the killing of 6 million Jews in the Second World War known as the Holocaust was a sheer lie."

"The site is dedicated to all those who have been killed under the pretext of the Holocaust," Fars reported, referring to Palestinians who, according to Iran, were killed under the Holocaust pretext.

Reports of the site drew anger from Israel's national Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem.

"The launch of a website dedicated to denying the Holocaust through caricatures and text, is yet the latest salvo emanating from Iran that denies the facts of the Holocaust and attempts to influence those who are ignorant of history," Yad Vashem said in a statement.

"The vulgar and cynical approach of the website, a combination of Holocaust denial and distortion, illustrated with antisemitic caricatures, further illustrates Iran’s disregard for reality and truth vis-à-vis the Holocaust, Jews and Israel."

Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has not acknowledged Israel as a sovereign state and even refrained from using the name Israel, instead referring to the Jewish state as the "Zionist regime."

The tensions reached a peak in 2005 when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad started his anti-Israel tirades, calling the Holocaust a "fairy tale."

Iran hosted a Holocaust conference in Tehran in December 2006 which was attended by prominent anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi figures.

Ahmadinejad and other Iranian officials argue that while publishing insulting cartoons of the Muslim prophet Muhammad and humiliating the sentiments of over one billion Muslims is considered by the West as press freedom, an investigation of a historic event is considered a crime.

Ahmadinejad also has said that even if the Nazi mass murder was true, those responsible for the crime should be punished, but that Israel should not be allowed to use it a pretext for committing another Holocaust against Palestinians.

First you say that "Iran launches it" then you write "A non governmental cultural foundation" launches the site. I wonder if Germany or France get stamped as holocaust deniers each time fascist there dny the holocaust.

Thats hardly "Iran" in its entirity, a nation of 79 million human beings. Why do you keep doing this? Are you playing ignorant or are you trying to build rage and anger with the low simple minded groups of people. I had higher expectations of this newspaper. Either way, the Iranian site is crap, the holocaust happend and is a tragedy. Behalf of our people, I apologize.

Just another reminder why the Western world and others in the region cannot let Iran acquire nuclear weaponry. The Iranian leadership and its supporters are incapable of appreciating reality and acting in a civilized manner. They are driven by religious fervor and hatred on a scale that obfuscates rational throught and threatens the civilized world. I hope the Western governments make note of these sick thought processes in fashioning a response to Iran's nuclear program and current leadership.

this controversy overshadows that discussion in the Islamic world (and the West - Obama didn't understand this, too) and precludes a rational discussion in the Arab world about those good reasons for a Jewish state. Jews need to 'leap' over this controversy and emphasize the rational reasons; i.e. religious discrimination against Jews and others in moslems countries, and not by name-calling. They've set a trap and we've been 'Jew baited' in the worst possible way and fallen for it.

    • 20:06

Ahmadinejad calls this an investigation of an historic event. How can cartoons claiming that the holocaust didn't happen be called an investigation? He could at least be honest and say that he's mocking the Jews. And how can he allow this when he believes mocking Islam is worthy of death? It is hypocritical to the extreme. I very much doubt Israel will call upon its people to become suicide bombers and attack innocent Iranians over this. That's the sort of thing Ahmadinejad would do. The evidence backing the holocaust is huge. For Ahmadinejad to say the holocaust never occurred is like saying that Germany didn't start WWII, and that Hitler didn't like being a leader.

But honestly why the Jewish people do not let free investigation to make their mouth closed? If I were not in Europe and did not see how the europeans treat the minorities, I would never have beleived Holoucast , just by living in an Iranian social context. The first thing our parrents teach us in Iran is we should be kind to all zoroastarian and christian and Jewish people. My mother told me do not forget that some of them are even better than muslims! but if we marry them we would be punished!! It is all an Iranian child or young typically knows about anti-semitism! So they can not beleive Holocaust. In Iran, even the problem of Israel is completely seperated from Judaism. They never taught us in school books that Israel is bad because it is Jewish. (Actually they cannot do it because it is in clear contradiction with Quran . Instead they taught us in school books that Israel is bad because it kills Palestinian children and people). So people who never have left country can not even understand what is Holocaust. If they do investigation and understand it , they would shut up their mouth.

Short of bringing total destruction on Iran, now is the time for hackers all over the world, who believe in truth and justice, to wreck damage on that vile site, and remain vigilant to more such-like sites cropping up at an alarming rate. For those who will retort to this post that you can’t curtail free speech/artistic creations, look deeply into your soul, tomorrow these same people will mock you, whether you are Christian, Buddhist, or whatever. The caricatures on this website could have been taken out of the Sturmer: 'anti-semitic caricatures, which revealed Jews as ugly characters with exaggerated facial features and misshapen bodies'. Thank in no small part to this sort of artistic exercise, my grand dad was taken from his home by the collar, with 15,000 others, shoved in cattle wagons, and left to roast and die of thirst over two weeks under the August sun. He had been the representative for Zwilling in his town. What had he done to deserve this? The incident is related in Curzio Malaparte, Kaputt, published in 1943! After the war, my mom went back to look for his grave. The people of the village showed her a plot, not so very big, covered by a concrete slab and circled by one single row of barb-wire. No name, of course, a single Star of David scratched on the concrete. I call on the malediction of all righteous men over the heads of those who ridicule our fallen ones. They say that, although the wheels of the Lord grind slowly, they grind excessively finely. I am looking forward to the day they will pull him from his hole in the ground, as they did to Saddam.

It didn't disprove the Holocaust. It said it was okay to question the Holocaust because it said the number was really between 5 Million and 6 Million. It seemed to say that the Holocaust was sort of funny to Iran, because Iranians say it was just a word that Jewish people made up, and even if it happened, the Jews might have deserved it anyway, because of the stereotype about Jews and money. It said there were Arabs living in Palestine before Israel was created and seems to indicate that nobody paid attention to that fact. A lie. But the site especially says that the Iranian People do not care what happened to the Jews unless they are only mentioned as an almost insignificant aspect out of a total picture. Nothing about Aryan Racial Laws. No recapping of what Hitler said in Mein Kamph. No Yellow Stars. Nothing about Kristallnacht. It even gives respect to Pseudo-Historians, who don't have any credibility except to Anti-Semites. And it says the Mufti had no connection to Hitler except that he looked at some photos which is another lie. One more thing? No historical context either in the site, about the history of Anti-Semitism in Europe and elsewhere leading up to the Shoah. So... this is what I think. Seemingly. even if Ahmadinejad is assassinated, according to this site, there are plenty of Iranians that think like him. If they want to think like him, I can't stop them from thinking. But at the same time, thinking and doing are two different things. What the Iranians are doing are creating Atomic Weapons to be loaded on top of Intercontinental Missiles. So they think like Nazis and they are DOING this. That's different than just an Anti-Semite. That is that they thinking akin to Hitler and are building a means to exterminate Jews. So... at this point, I don't have any problem with Israel bombing Iranian Nuclear Sites or someone assassinating Ahmadinejad. If Iranians just want to murder Ahmadinejad and take down this site, that would probably make me feel better about them. But anyway, for right now, Israel... go ahead and bomb Iran, if you want to, and if Ahmadinejad should get killed anytime soon, that would be a good first step towards peace because there would be one less Anti-Semite in the World with a bomb.

The way to answer the anti-Holocaust twaddle is to deny the existence of Mohammed. There are very serious scholars (Muslim, by the way) who make the case that Mohammed never existed. This is a controversy that should be made more public. There is also a controversy about how many versions of the Koran existed in the time soon after the alleged death of this so-called prophet. There is a very serious theological point to be made by this argument. This is another issue that deserves more public scrutiny.

The contents of a history book are dictated by the current political climate rather than the facts. Israels history texts paint a very different picture of the history of the region than do American history texts. American history is very much sanitized for the consumption of American students. In spite of the liberties taken with history throughout the world it has never become an issue. Now we have seen the rise of the history police. What is their purpose? To jail people who do not acknowledge Israels viewpoint on history regarding the holocaust. There is no other subject in the annals of history which concern the history police at this time. The holocaust, along with its related topics, such as Nazis, Hitler, death camps, etc, seem to have become the trademarked property of Israels Jews. These words cannot be used anywhere in the world without the local Jewish chapter reviewing them and castigating the user. Israel will not accept any version of history other than their own. This is where we enter into dangerous territory. Is Israels influnce over the history police restricted only to the holocaust? At whiat point are we allowed to consider it propaganda?

I noticed that some of the insulting cartoons came from a Danish newspaper with a nazi sympathizer background (in Schleswig-Holstein. Does that mean that S.H. is still a very prejudiced part of Denmark and so printed insulting cartoons of Mohammed (hence hated Jews and also muslims). Do peole defend their right to free speech out of the belief in free speech or because they also prejudiced? In the USA, there is the most free speech (free speech for hate speech); and holocaust denying is hate speech; so people don't agree with the holocaust denying or cartoons, but believe in freedom of speech. Cartoons insulting Mohammed and holocaust denying may both be hate speech, protected in some countries, but not in others. Holocaust denying is not protected in many European countries, you may remember Mr. Ahmadinejad, as you could be arrested there for denying it, because of the trauma they suffered under Hitler, and they don't want another Hitler, so go ahead and doubt and investigate, what everyone knows as a fact, but don't be puzzled if you are threatened with arrest in Europe. Sometime, also try to feel the pain of the Jewish people and the others who were victims of the Holocaust. We must feel the pain of the Palestinians, Armenians, Darfur, Congo today, anyone who hurts.

The KKK is a tiny organization, not the government of a country. There is a huge difference. The Iranian state has a sizable military and the resources to do far more harm than a group of rednecks. I hope some day the people of Iran will be free. I have nothing against Iranian people or culture, or their right to have a state there, but I feel no remorse in saying I hate their government and would not oppose any effective means to take it down.

The best answer to people who question anything relating to the Holocaust is to open the German archives and allow everyone to access the information - especially researches who have shyed away from doing research on this topic for the fear of being labeled "unbelievers" and "questioners" of the given historical facts. Both history and science can only make advancements if people are allowed to do real and open research.

Researchers everywhere have been studying this issue for 60 years and are still studying it - and new information and evidence is coming out all the time. There already is "real and open research" on the Holocaust - what makes you think otherwise? The Germans themselves were meticulous in making records down to the last detail of all their action. Much of the research is taking plac at the various Holocaust museums around the world, in academic institutions worldwide, and I have yet to hear of anyone prevented from studying the subject from whichever angle he chooses.

In order to declare sovereign statehood, an entity must control all of it's territories. Palestine, in all it's history has always had some other entity in control of some or all of it's territories. The only opportunity was May 14th 1948 but alas, Jewish forces, under PlanDalet, were already in control of territories slated for the New Arab State by May 14th, when the British Mandate (occupation) ended. So even if the Palestinian had wanted to declare statehood (not that there is any obligation), they could not have then, nor since... Occupation must end FIRST!!
