Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton announced in a statement that their daughter wed Jewish investment banker Marc Mezvinsky after weeks of secrecy.

Chelsea Clinton married her longtime boyfriend Saturday night at an exclusive estate along New York's Hudson River.

Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton announced in a statement that their daughter wed investment banker Marc Mezvinsky after weeks of secrecy and buildup that had celebrity watchers flocking to the small village of Rhinebeck for the evening nuptials.

"Today, we watched with great pride and overwhelming emotion as Chelsea and Marc wed in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts, surrounded by family and their close friends," the Clintons said. "We could not have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate the beginning of their life together, and we are so happy to welcome Marc into our family. On behalf of the newlyweds, we want to give special thanks to the people of Rhinebeck for welcoming us and to everyone for their well-wishes on this special day."

It is estimated that hundreds of guests gathered at the historic estate near the end of a near-perfect summer day of warm temperatures, blue skies and cottony clouds. The ceremony was conducted by a rabbi and a reverend as Clinton is Methodist and Mezvinsky is Jewish, and included a poem by Leo Marks titled, The Life That I Have, according to the family.

Astor Courts, the planned location for Cheslea Clinton's wedding

Astor Courts, where Chelsea Clinton planned to get married, is seen in Rhinebeck, N.Y., on July 28, 2010.

More than 400 guests were expected at the historic estate. Details of the wedding were kept fanatically close to the vest, with shopkeepers, innkeepers, vendors and restaurateurs sworn to secrecy.

Photos showed the bride and groom walking down a broad outdoor aisle between rows of guests. Chelsea wore a strapless white gown with a fitted bodice and full skirt with platinum-colored beading at the waist and a long white veil.

The groom wore a simple black tuxedo going down the aisle and in a photo with the Clinton family, and a white prayer shawl and yarmulke in separate photos with Chelsea under a flowering tree and amid wedding guests.

The photos were in sun and shade, with lighting suggesting they were taken in the late afternoon.

In the one photo in which she appeared, Hillary Clinton wore a magenta gown. Bill Clinton, who is pictured walking Chelsea down the aisle, wore a simple black tux with a white boutonniere in his lapel.

Officials restricted airspace over the estate, and the area will remain a no-fly zone until 3:30 a.m. local time Sunday. Roads were also blocked off, and inconvenienced neighbors were soothed with a complimentary bottle of wine.

Some of the celebrities spotted in Rhinebeck for the event included actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, fashion designer Vera Wang and Madeleine Albright, who was secretary of state during Bill Clinton's second term as president.

The wedding took place at Astor Courts, a secluded estate along the Hudson River built as a Beaux Arts style playground for John Jacob Astor IV more than a century ago. The estate features the sort of commanding view that once inspired Hudson River School painters, as well as 50 acres (20 hectares) of buffer space to shield the party from prying eyes.

Chelsea Clinton and Mezvinsky were friends as teenagers in Washington, and both attended Stanford University. They now live in New York, where Mezvinsky works at G3 Capital, a Manhattan hedge fund. Mezvinsky worked previously at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker.

Clinton completed her master's degree in public health earlier this year at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Mezvinsky is a son of former U.S. Reps. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky of Pennsylvania and Ed Mezvinsky of Iowa, longtime friends of the Clintons. His parents are divorced.

Hypocrisy: In israel everyone's a Jew to serve in the IDF but not when it comes to marrying
    • Allegra

    • 17:12

The hypocrisy and immorality of current Israeli laws is fully exposed when one compares serving in the IDF to getting married. Anyone who reaches 18 has to serve in the IDF regardless of whether Orthodox zealots consider them a Jew or not - note that Orthodox zealots themselves refuse to serve. But when it comes to getting married, then one has to prove jewishness on four generations. Let's be logical: either reform and conservative Jews are to be considered as Jews in israel, or they should be allowed to opt out of the military service.

What kind of "Rabbi" would marry a Jew to a non jew on Shabbos. Why do we go for these flim flam scams? There is a Medrish that calls these times the exile of the Pig. Tallis, Kippah, Chuppah, "Rabbi"-this pig is happy to put out it's hoofs and show you it's kosher on the outside...but not on the inside. These are the times we live in. We are surrounded by Pigs, also know in the Medrish as the exile of Rome. On the other hand, the Torah is eternal. It was here before there were Jews and will be there in the end too. Why do we keep fighting this truth?

It marks the real acceptance and coming of age of Jews in the United States. Throughout Jewish history - there have been very few countries in which the Jewish people have been so accepted. In this case - a Jewish male can marry the non Jewish daughter of a former President and the current Secretary of State. Furthermore - he can do so while proudly uitlizing the symbols of his religion and his people. But best of all - the dominant non-Jewish society is supportive of this - and views this as a wonderful celebration. We Americans who are of the Jewish religion are certainly lucky to be residing in the United States.

for the Clintons - all of them. I thought the Monica Lewinsky affair was a witch hunt - what did an affair with M.L. have to do with Clinton's ability to lead the country. Dirty politics and puritanical Republicans were in everyone's bedroom. The immoral moral majority. I couldn't believe that high school students were reading the transcripts about Clinton's not having sex with that woman (every word) - why not just give them copies of Playboy. It was an insult to Clinton and the Presidency - all Presidents had affairs. I am glad they all survived.

I would like to see the Reform movement take a solid stance forbidding their rabbis from performing intermarriages. Both the Conservative and Orthodox movements have such a policy, and no wonder both of these movements do not accept Reform conversions. Rather than dictate their secular standards on the Israel population concerning the “Conversion Bill” the Reform movement should do its own house cleaning first.

. It appears that Chelsea has attended Jewish religious services. I doubt that rabbi was going to officiate as a conservative rabbi without some idea of her converting. He talked to the couple for a while. I would wager she is going to convert to Conservative Judaism, but would Israel even recognize her as Jewish. It's not like Israel is open to recognizing people who are Jewish unless they become Orthodox, though Israel has a shortage of immigrants.

    • 01.08.10
    • 19:33

most of the jews some of you guys are bemoaning as 'lost' through intermarriage have already been (de facto) 'lost' to judaism as such long before they come to the point when they marry out. or the marriage makes absolutely no impact /difference as to their adherence to judaism, which is more formal /just traditional than anything else. they don't become 'worse' jews (they might become 'better'). the pressure to keep any jewish person within the fold at any price, just for the sake of 'jewish continuity' must seem slightly hysterical & hypocritical to the outside world, & does to me too.

    • 18:37

This would have cemented her father's reputation as having a special relationship with American blacks. And in fact, I am amazed that this groom agreed to marry Chelsey. His mother, former US Representative Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, known during her time in office (2 years only) as the 3M lady, lost her seat because she voted for Bill Clinton's first budget. (This brought about the Gingrich Revolution, 1994.) Another source of amazement is that the bride is quite "un-pretty" (trying to be delicate). Perhaps the color of money in Bill's pockets blinded the man, after all, he is in the money business.

That's no flowering tree. It's a chuppah. While we'd have loved to have had her convert, it's admirable that there were religious influences in their wedding. Instead of tying the knot before a justice of the peace or a judge, they were wed by a rabbi and a minister, signed an interfaith ketubah, and stood under a chuppah.
