German president ups pressure on banker over 'Jewish gene' remark
German President Christian Wulff says central bank needs to limit damage to Germany's reputation caused by Thilo Sarrazin's views on Jews, Muslims.
By Reuters Tags: GermanyGerman President Christian Wulff has increased pressure on the Bundesbank to dismiss its
contentious board member Thilo Sarrazin, arguing that the central bank needed to limit damage to Germany's reputation.
Sarrazin has divided Germany with criticism of the country's large Muslim community, and outspoken remarks asserting that Jews have a particular genetic makeup, sparking calls from politicians that the central bank should fire him.
Speaking to N24 television late on Wednesday, Wulff hinted that this might be the best course of action, as a newspaper reported the bank's board had decided to sack Sarrazin, but that no official decision had yet been made.

"I think the board of the Bundesbank can do quite a lot so that this debate does not damage Germany - in particular internationally," said Wulff, who would have to approve
Sarrazin's dismissal if the board voted for it.
The Berliner Zeitung daily said the bank's board was no longer debating whether to remove Sarrazin, but rather how to do so. The Bundesbank declined to comment on the report.
The central bank can only remove Sarrazin on the grounds of serious misconduct. Both the 65-year-old and the bank have repeatedly stated his comments on race and religion are not
linked to his role at the Bundesbank.
Germany's Jewish community has been strongly critical of Sarrazin and a U.S. Holocaust survivors' group said on Thursday it would lobby for Sarrazin to be removed from the Bundesbank.
"Holocaust survivors from Israel, Europe, Australia, and the Americas will approach the German embassies in some two dozen countries to demand the immediate removal of Thilo Sarrazin," said Elan Steinberg, Vice President of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants.
"Sarrazin's racist comments have not only offended us as victims of Nazi Germany's brutalities, but are blackening the morally upright position of modern day Germany."
The bank said on Wednesday it had put off a decision on Sarrazin's fate until at least Thursday.
Polls published on Wednesday showed Germans were divided on whether Sarrazin should remain at the bank.

I am German and Jewish. What genes do I have?
I was at the Doctor not long ago and was discussing why my heart medication was not working. She said that some medication may not work with some ethnic groups (Jewish in my case) I didn't see anything wrong with that. Seems like actual fact. I think unless it's a case of clear cut anti-semitism, then people shouldn't jump down someone's throat for voicing what appears to be an opinion that didn't mean to offend.
The usual wrong vocabulary: Wulff seems to condamn Sarrazin more for his damage to German reputation than for the intrinsic dangerousness of his pseudobiological-political message.
Sarrazin claims that the muslim are less intelligent than the average german, because off his genes and that´s wrong. the environment influences intelligence more than the genetic descent. So improve the environment (education, equal chances, acceptance etc) of every citizen germanys, doenst matter if he believes in Allah, Jahwe, god or in the man on moon
This is true for practically all ethnic groups, or else they would not have looked different from one another. This in itself is not anti-Semitic. Nor would it be racist if Sarrazin said that Germans possess a "German Gene". I was told that the author did not claim that the German Gene is superior to other genes, in which case he is not necessarily a racist. It appears that the author is complaining of the non-assimilation (or very slow assimilation) of Muslims in Germany's culture. Such a complaint can be valid if he has supportive proof. In any case, Jewish paranoids don't need to get into this fight. Sarrazin is not aiming particularly at the Jews.
The guy is a throwback to believing in genetic attributes of various non-Aryan people. They used to call it eugenics. Time for him to move on and certainly not represent any government agency. Simply unacceptable.
this is a compliment. Jews themselves believe, rightfully, that they have a 'Jewish gene', that distinguishes them from the barbarians that they have avoided assimilating with for 1,000's of years. Leave this man alone, and go after the Islamic Jihadists and other hardcore anti Semites.
Well, the example has been made: Never piss off askhenazim.
His words were also racist for Muslims and Turkish. He must pay for that either.
whatever the man may have uttered is not the issue am talking about here.i just want to know if jews themselves dont claim a particular genetic make-up that makes them different from others.i think i read that on haaretz sometime back.
...he was complaining about Muslims being dump and lazy and used Jews as an example of "better" immigrants. Not that that makes his comments any better.
germans are divided on his oppinion on muslims in germany haaretz writes in this article. about 90 percent of them agree on mr. sarrazins view on muslims in germany.
He can attack muslims and get away with it, but one word against the jews and he is given his marching orders.
So the muslim community doesn't care and/or is not organized enough to put pressure on the guy, it's your problem. Do you want the jewish organizations to self-censor because you can't act ? That's dumb reasoning. Or maybe you'd like jewish organizations to lobby for muslim interests ?
Haaretz is owned by a German family, the DuMont Schauberg family, that stole property from German Jews during the holocaust. That is why Haaretz continues to push an anti-Jewish, anti-Israel agenda.
Barely two weeks ago I read on Ha'aretz about some Jewish scientist who discovered a 'Jewish gene', common to every Jew on a planet. Everybody was raving happy. What happened? Change of wind?
"... some Jewish scientist who discovered a 'Jewish gene', common to every Jew on a planet." How can this ever be true, especially when there are new converts to Judaism from all kinds of ethnic groups that represent different races?
... can't hide the fact that his statement is racist. Making a dumb, 1st degree interpretation of Sarrazin's remark to absolve him just show how Uncle Tom shares his views.
There is ignorance about this issue on both sides, but if there is not ill will, why make someone lose his job? Cohens and Levis have special status in Judaism, and they must be directly descended from the originals, genetically, via the father, son after son after son, all the way back (and have Jewish mothers all the way back), otherwise they are not true Cohen/Levi. A great Rabbi who is not descended from them can never become one, nor of course can a convert since they are not descended directly. But the child of a convert can become the greatest Rabbi and leader, including the Messiah (King David is the descendant of Ruth). Jews are partly defined by religion partly by genes partly by culture. Some Jews are ignorant of this some non-Jewish people are ignorant of this, but ignorance is not necessarily malicious. Being German is also partly genes partly culture partly a matter of 'conversion' by obtaining citizenship, and in today's Germany it is possible to be a Jew and a German in the sense of citizenshp, as it is possible to be a Christian and a German or a Moslem and a German, although once this was not the accepted definition. But this is different than a person whose 'ethnicity' is also 'German', not merely their citizenship/nationality. Why not admit this? That ethnicity is genetic, though of course it is not 'pure' there are many mixtures, and there is no 'superiority' or 'inferiority' involved, it is just a fact, why try to make it something that has to be falsely denied? Just as there is a difference between French people who are ethnically a descendant of mixtures of the peoples who lived in that region thousands of years, and an immigrant from another region entirely who celebrates that other identity while also claiming French citizenship and loving French culture.
"and outspoken remarks asserting that Jews have a particular genetic makeup" ...That, as well as his theories about Muslims. It seems like he's more just a European who's racist against Middle Eastern people like Jews and Arabs.
Of course there are Jewish genes, we read about them all the time. Look at the Lumbas in Zimbabwe.
