California university suspends Muslim union for heckling Israel envoy as 'killer'

Michael Oren was repeatedly interrupted, harassed in February speech by Muslim students.

The University of California at Irvine has suspended its Muslim Student Union for one year and placed it on disciplinary probation for an additional year after 12 of its members called Israel's ambassador to the United States a "killer" during a speech on Campus in February.

California police arrested the 12 members after Michael Oren's Irvine speech descended into chaos. The hecklers interrupted his lecture more than 10 times, shouting "killers" and "how many Palestinians did you kill?"

Oren took a 20-minute break after the fourth protest, only to be interrupted again by young men yelling at him every few minutes.

“We commend the University for its judicious decision in support of free speech and civil discourse,” said Shalom Elcott, President and CEO of Jewish Federation Orange County.

“The University’s disciplinary action regarding the MSU establishes an important and appropriate precedent and sends a powerful message to other universities across the nation," he added. ‬

According to the university's decision, the MSU membership is also required to collectively complete 50 hours of community service, as a result of which it will not be allowed to conduct organized campus events until at least the fall of 2011.

Freedom of speech is guaranteed under the US Constitution...but only as long as it does not disrupt the freedom of others to speak. Unfortunately for UC Irvine, this comes a little too late, as my son who was accepted there as a Honor's Student, chose another very highly rated university with one of his reasons for rejecting UC Irvine being the attitude of Muslims on campus.

The vast majority of non-natural deaths among Muslims since 1066 (including nearly 5 million since 1966) have been due to other Muslims--for them to call Israel as "killer" and ignore their own deficiencies shows Muslims' true colours!

They just elevated this kid into a new local Arab freedom fighter 'hero' at our local Santa Ana mosque, the same where they converted wayward Jew Adam Gadahn into a terrorist. The community service should be designed to redress the crime. Picking up campus trash isn't the right solution.

I do not understand how protests by individuals would lead to the suspension of a group they are associated with. There was no indication that the group sponsored the protest. It is like saying that we should shut down the university because these 12 of its student did a rowdy protest.

Anti Semitism has reached intolerable levels on campuses all over the world : read the studies that prove Jewish students live in fear, and are subject to non stop harrasment and intimidation. In Europe, it has reached frightening levels, and US is going the same way.

The MSU was suspended not only for heckling Oren but also for its numerous anti-Semitic activities and its other attempts to foment bigotry and extremism. Attempting to prevent Israelis and Jews from exercising freedom of speech at Irvine was only one example of the MSU's extremist actions.

Now let's go the next step of banning all Student Unions that have an agenda of spreading racism, bigotry, and hatred (e.g. Muslim Student Union at UCI) on-campus. These organizations are usually funded and supported by unnamed outside sources that spread bigotry, hatred, and racism.

    • 22:47

It is unfortunate that the Moslem students involved in the interuption of a talk being given by a guest of the University they are attending failed to learn that the purpose of a university education is to hear other views and discuss and debate them. Shouting down another demonstrates both intolerance and a rejection of the concept that discussion leads to understanding and the bridging of differences.

"According to the university's decision, the MSU membership is also required to collectively complete 50 hours of community service, as a result of which it will not be allowed to conduct organized campus events until at least the fall of 2011." This sounds like collective punishment! Punishing all members because a dozen of them excercised their right to free speech? The sad thing is that this is coming from a University where rights are supposed to be taught and upheld! The fairness test will be the university's reaction to hecklers that will try to stop someone, such as an Iranian official, from delivering his/her speech.

Finally, California university is coming to its senses. Would that more schools will follow. Free speech should not be abused and verbal harassement is totally unacceptable in institutions of higher education (as well as in any other places). Israel is lucky, and should be very proud, to have Michael Oren as ambassador to the US. A gentleman and perfect diplomat. This is not the first time he has had to face hecklers on campuses; let's hope it is the last time.

A univrersity is a place of ideas, of discourse where divergent opinions, no matter how repugnant should be heard and met with counter ideas. The constant disruption that made Oren's address impossible, is conduct unbecoming for a university environment. It alsoprvented Oren from being heard so that others could counter his claims. Oren is a propgandist and says nothing new. He simply spouts the usual Israeli propganda that is heard over and over ad nauseum. He should have ben confronted with facts not chaos and mayhem.
