Interior Ministry closes down Tel Aviv beaches due to pollution
Frishman, Gordon beaches closed until further notice after high concentration of coliform bacteria found.
By Yigal HaiThe Interior Ministry ordered the closing of the Frishman and Gordan beaches in Tel Aviv Thursday, due to pollution in the water.
In a routine checkup of water quality by the Health Ministry, an abnormally high concentration of coliform bacteria was found Thursday morning.
The Health Ministry notified the Tel Aviv municipality and the Interior Ministry, who immediately shut down the beaches until further notice.
"As of now it is unclear what the source of the pollution is, and the matter is being investigated," said Yosef Amar, head supervisor of bathing sites in the Interior Ministry. "Another sample of sea water was taken, four hours after the first check, and we are waiting for laboratory results."
There was no previous warning of waste into the sea. The Dan Region Association of Towns for Sewage and Environmental Issues did announce they would be doing emergency work to replace a major sewage pipe in north Tel Aviv, but the work has not even started. There is also a chance that the new pipe connection might not even interfere with the water.
The association spokesman, Amnon Lieberman, said that, "after we performed a checkup it was quite clear that the source of the pollution is not in the association's systems, which are closed, and no leak was found." Lieberman also vowed his association would continue to prevent the flow of polluted water to the sea.

An ignorant country, filled with ignorant people, surrounded by polluted seas and air. And yet, we are chosen! We know everything. That's why everybody loves us.
So two beaches are closed, the others are fine? Ergo, you either have a polution source in the direct vicinity or all TA-beaches should be closed. Anyway, TA beaches are Dog-Pooh central station, year around no-go area according to Butch.
my father in law, in the late 90's , at the healthy age of 76 , went swimming in herzelia petuach beach. he drank a bit of water, one day later he fell ill with flu like symptoms. he was hospitalized 2 days later with neurological symptoms like meningitis. he was put in isolation. got better then died about a week later in the intensive care. all from drinking dan region beach water on an day that a sign was not up to warn bathers of polluted waters.
Well I hate your gutts people but one thing I sure have to admit is that the Israeli interior ministry is taking good care of you and decided to close down the beaches regardless of the loss of income in tourism. I mean it does not necessarily have to be that polluted. When Israel bombed Al Jiyeh power station in Lebanon Last year, the fuel oil went all the way to the sea and went north along the coast till Syrian borders. Syria closed its beaches to clean them for a while. As for Lebanon! Not cleaned yet, everybody in the sea Lol, a bath in fuel oil. Anyways it is so sad for Lebanon that the sea is polluted, I didnt see a reason why Israel was so destructive to power stations and bridges that dont even connect to the South and factories that made competition with Israel by selling to nearby regions. But again have to admit Smart !
Ms. Levy, which intelligent responses? Surely your response was neither intelligent nor relating to this article. The diatribe you set forth is ripe with inaccuracy and that same ol' rhetorical spirit that pervades CPUSA meetings. This is an article about the environment and not capitalism. For a great read, try Ecocide in the USSR...it might help you set the jumbled piece of string you call a brain in order.
So inspiring to read the intelligent responses. It's so obvious that Israel, is not only a political puppet of the U.S. by being its military proxy in the Near East, it also is a recipient of the garbage that is a result of being America's god child...pollution of air and water, domestic violence, a deteriorating educational system. Here in the U.S. capitalism is reaching its peak, with CEO's earning millions of dollars while their receptionists and secretary's go without adequate health insurance, 2 million incarcerated people in prison, due in part to a privatized prison system (which Israel is now looking to emulate). Last but not least, Israel occupies another people with the approval of its parent who occupies Iraq. Don't people see that the inability to drink water from your tap, swim in clean water, living in peace, and irradication of poverty is all connected to anger, bitterness, and ego which capitalism thrives on.
i guess the hamas had a group-crapping into the mediterranean and sent some greetings up to tel-aviv. shalom!
Last year Canada killed more than 300,000 BABY seals! I'm sure you played your part. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0319-07.htm
dude, there is no oil problem, but with coliform bacteria - maybe you just do not know the difference...this is a problem on many beaches around the mediterranean like in spain, italy or greece.
Dogs boo on the beach maybe?
that you don't get some of the oil spill that your wonderful IAF caused to the coasts of Lebanon and southern Syria. Oh well, just pretend it didn't happen...it's the Israeli way.
