In spite of war costs, state boasts NIS 2.6 billion revenue surplus
Surplus reached a high of NIS 5.7b NIS in September; overall tax revenues are 11.2% higher than 2005.
By Tal Levy and Haaretz CorrespondentIn spite of the large rise in spending caused by the war in Lebanon, the state boasted a revenue surplus of NIS 2.6 billion over the past year.
The state has accumulated a surplus of NIS 3.1 billion over the first nine months of the year. The state was expected to suffer a deficit of three percent by the end of the year, but instead revenue is in a much better situation than at the same time last year.
In September 2006, the budget surplus hit a high of NIS 5.7 billion before dropping to NIS 2.6 billion. Increased spending, including NIS 700 million in compensation for damage caused in northern Israel during the war, as well as the holiday season and technical problems, led to the shrinking of the surplus during September.
Spending in foreign currencies has also risen, partly due to a rise in spending abroad by the Defense Ministry.
Since the beginning of the year, tax revenue has totaled NIS 136 billion NIS, 11.2 percent more than the same period during the previous year.
Direct tax revenue like income tax has reached NIS 7.9 billion, as opposed to NIS 7.8 billion for the same period last year, while indirect deposits are lower by NIS 400 million from the previous year.
Overall, since the beginning of the year, state revenue has increased by NIS 11.8 billion over last year.

And all you Arabs and self-hating jews can do about it is cry.
What Clickfool forgets: 1) That a grossly incompetent and bankrupt Britain was saved from total destruction during World War II by the enormous charity of the United States. 2) That since World War II, despite her ever-increasing prosperity, Britain has received subsidies in the billions every year via NATO from the United States. 3) That the gentiles of Europe still have not repaid the vast bulk of the many hundreds of billions of dollars they stole from the millions of Jews they helped murder. 4) That much of America's wealth was created by the Jewish people in the first place. Clickfool writes: "What does it matter that you don`t need the money? It`s no sin to make a profit." There you see it in all its glory: the brutish anti-Semitism of the British always ready to turn great contribution into something very sordid.
Israel did not pay nothing, all cluster, smart bombs, F16s, etc.. were offered by uncle sam. Cant you tell from the irresponsible way these bombs were delivered?
Come on, Israel...go for it! The American taxpayer's good for $1000 million. Send those guys with the sad eyes. What does it matter that you don't need the money? It's no sin to make a profit.

the war-related spending excesses were given as the excuse for cuts in everything from Ethiopian immigration to education spending. if there's really a surplus, does that mean that those threatened cuts will be restored? i'm not holding my breath, more wondering what the next excuse will be............
We need a Likud government back quickly, before Kadima (mis)manages to spend the remaining surplus on corruption and self-destruction!
