IN PICTURES / Israel uncovers first Jesus-era house in Nazareth
Archaeologists also find clay and chalk vessels which indicate the house may have belonged to Jewish family.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Nazareth Israel newsIsraeli archaeologists said Monday that they have uncovered remains of the first dwelling in the northern city of Nazareth that can be dated back to the time of Jesus.
The find sheds a new light on what Nazareth might have been like in Jesus' time, said the archaeologists, indicating that it was probably a small hamlet with about 50 houses populated by poor Jews.
The remains of a wall, a hideout and a cistern were found after builders dug up an old convent courtyard in the northern Israeli city, said archaeologist Yardenna Alexandre of the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Alexandre told reporters that archeologists also found clay and chalk vessels used by Galilean Jews of the time - an indication the home belonged to a simple Jewish family.
"It was likely Jesus and his childhood friends would have known the house," said Alexandre.
"From the little written evidence available we know that first century Nazareth AD was a small Jewish village located in a valley," Alexandre said, adding that "until now a few Jesus-era graves were revealed, but never have we unearthed the remains of contemporary residences."

A pit made in the rock was also found, the entrance to which was likely hidden, in which contemporary clay work was found. Alexandre estimated that the pit was made as part of the Jews' preparations ahead of the Great Rebellion against the Romans, in 67 C.E.

I FEEL VERY SORRY FOR THIS

Interesting discovery. Through archaeology and the historian, slowly but surely, we will find more and more answers as to what really happened in ancient Biblical times.
And where did you find there was no evidence for Nazareth in the 1st century - did you look everywhere? HOw about New TEstament, authenticated by fulfilling over 400 prophecies by Jesus, written about in The Septuagint - huh?? To fulfill only 8 of those prophecies by would be equivalent of covering the state of Texas with a silver coin two feet deep and finding the specific one. To fulfill only 40 prophecies - you do not have enough atoms in the universe to pick 'that one.' How's that for a proof - huh?
There is lots of evidence for the history of Jesus Christ. The writings of Paul the Apostle are very specific regarding the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He along with those disciples who walked and lived alongside Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry all testified to who Jesus was and IS! They all maintained their stand that Christ is who the gospels say he is...the Son of God who was born of a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit who lived on this earth and ministered the gospel of salvation, healing and deliverance to the people during his ministry. He was crucified, buried in the tomb and resurrected from the dead and ascended back into heaven to sit at the right hand of God's throne. And he will return. The disciples and apostles suffered great persecution and even gave their lives as Martyrs for this gospel they testified to! I'd say they were serious about the reality of Jesus Christ...son of God...saviour of mankind!
Wow!
jewish family? Wondenful news the Christian good.
There is no historical evidence for a Jesus who was allegedly crucified. The passasge in Josepheus records that he was told (did not see) about a Jesus--a very common name. Tacitus inclusion of a Jesus is a redaction, added to the Armenian account and not a part of the original work. "Christ" was a common title for anyone "anointed" and discovery.com has shown that Christ was as old as 200 BCE and a title for magi(cians) who changed water into wine and multiplied bread and fishes for the amusement of the pharaohs. There was no Jesus of Nazareth as there is not a single historical record before 400 CE by any pilgrim passing that way on his way to Jerusalem. The findings are more in keeping with the Infancy Gospels (there were over 200 gospels, while the Emperor Constantine, founder of the Christian church at the Council of Nicea, had his troops determine the top four--three patterned after the Gospel of Mark). This finding is nothing more than a temporary shelter for others--not Jesus.
Jesus was born as a Jew, he was brought-up as a Jews, He lived the life of a Jew and he died as a Jew for Jewish cause.Jesus never was a Christian. The Christian religion is not built upon the teachings of Jesus. Christian religion is the result of wrong interpretation of Bible. Let discoveries shed new light on these truths.
Great finding , but the political dressing/dimensions of the project is really troubling. This should not be about "entitlements" folks. will we ever start with what unite us and not what divide us ..
How amazing is that! I just wish I was there to enjoy the scene with my own eyes. Thanks to the dedicated team of archaeologists. You have truly blessed us Jesus-lovers.
Jews of Nazareth. The Roman Empire existed only for the purpose of looting and taxation. "Death and Taxes" - the more things change the more they stay the same.
well, that makes a nice Xmas gift for the Christians....and a nice look at Jewish history, too, of the late Second Temple period. Hmm. Anyone want to bet that Jesus was a country boy, rather than a city kid?
More proof that the land of Israel is the homeland of the Jews.
A great "Thank you" to Israel to finance these archeological researches. God will remember that. An average Christian.
While the Palestinians are busy destroying all evidence of Jewish roots to the land...as can be seen in the archaeological destruction at Temple Mount...the fact is the house may have been a Jewish one. Why does that offend you? The Jewish people and the link to the land of Israel date back over 2000 years before the Muslims. Do you feel it helps the Israeli argument to keep the land? Does it diminish the Palestinian argument of their alleged historic connection? Tell us, what bothers you?
I love when they find things in Tel Dan, Shaarayim (in Emek Ayela), Nazareth, Tel Hazor, City of David, etc... it always blows away the theories of Finkelstein! Nazareth was a real village and this is true evidence... thank God they found this wonderful piece of archeology to prove those who believe there was no 1st century Nazareth as wrong!
Please read the article before commenting. It shows how ignorant people are. Meshugga
Different mothers and here is where the deep old plain arrogance begins: one woman was married to Abraham and one was not. What a kitsch!
Guess no ID-card was left behind... (-; Surely, the archeologues assume -reasonably- the inhabitants were Jewish. But surely non-Jewish people lived in the area... The house exactly 200 years old? Then, Jesus saw its construction? Perhaps helped made the doorframes? Perhaps, the house was built in the second half of the first century... Then, Jesus would perhaps have walked and played in that particular filed. All possible scenario's.. Imagination and the fact that we can so easily accept other's thought frameworks to make them our own is a fascinating process. Surely when we start digging in our heels and prepare to fight for our 'being right'... Just addicted to independant thinking...
Many people try to erase the history of real evidence, all that the Bible talks about Jesus is true, there are thousands of tests that even the blind can see and therefore useless to try to deny the truth and to say that the exodus from Egypt is not and never success? and we all know it's true because I believe in all that The Bible and The Tora say !
Have you even bothered to read the report before excreting your nonsense, Toronto Dovy ? This is very serious archeology; Israeli archeologists are among the best in world and highly respected. The news says : "...archaeologist Yardenna Alexandre of the Israel Antiquities Authority. " Try reading. As for no Nazareth at that time, tell that to authorities and the writers of the gospel.
Why do they call it Jesus-era if it was inhabited by Jews and it has nothing to do with Jesus?
There were only Jews and Gentiles(non-Jews). An Arab is an Arab. As we all know prior to 1940 the term Palestinian referred exclusively to Jews living in Palestine. This an uncontested fact. In all Arabist writings(non Arab writers who specialized in Arab history)and Arab(writers of Arab descent) history professors such as Dr. Phil Hitti of Princeton University who testified against Partition at the UN in 1947. Both agreed there was "no such thing as a Palestinian or a country Palestine" only a greater Syria. My point, Pal, you were invented in the 1969 as a weapon to use against Israel. Look it up, it was the Arab writers themselves that said it. And why Arab leaders of Palestine were members of the Syrian Parliament. There was NO country Palestine therefore no government.
For you Israel haters there is no limit. There is always something for you to complain about. Enough is never enough. It doesn't matter what is written you will always find a way to bad mouth Israel. Why even come to this website anyways?
This is a very beautiful finding...we will have an idea as to how the people in the area where Our Lord has come from actually lived. My personal thanks to all involved in this truly poignant project.
Dont leave that out of there!
This should be challenged because there is no evidence in any documentation or serious archeology that there was a town of Nazareth in the first century.
I envy those on the excavation team who came across the artifacts that people of the time used. Anyone with a sense of history would be thrilled at handling them and also being the first to see the house.
From the outside it often looks as if authorities in Israel concentrate to way more than 90% on Jewish interests only, even though Israel is much more than "just" the Jewish State - it hosts the most important & precious sites & buildings of Christianity. Also the mosque in Jerusalem is of great interest to the muslim world. Very nice that archeologists dig for that in Nazareth. One could assume that the interest is there, because Jesus was a Jew, but I'd rather believe it is beacuse they are interested in ALL the history...
This is a wonderful day for Christians and this finding may shed light on how Our Lord must have lived in his young years... Thanks to all those involved!
