In AIPAC speech, Obama repeats support for Israel, peace talks
U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful also calls for direct engagement with Iran on nuclear program.
By Shmuel RosnerUnited States Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama reiterated his support for Israel on Friday, while at the same time calling on the U.S. to make a concerted effort to revive the peace process.
"Our job is to rebuild the road to real peace and lasting security throughout the region," Obama said during a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Chicago. "Our job is to do more than lay out another road map."
"That effort begins with a clear and strong commitment to the security of Israel: Our strongest ally in the region and its only established democracy," he added. "That will always be my starting point."
In what may have been a veiled reference to reports of American opposition to Israeli negotations with Syria, Obama said: "We should never seek to dictate what is best for the Israelis and their security interests. No Israeli prime minister should ever feel dragged to or blocked from the negotiating table by the United States."
The Illinois senator also called for continued American military assistance to Israel. "We must preserve our total commitment to our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense programs," he said.
Obama added that he was concerned about the Palestinian unity government accord.
Turning to Iran, the presidential hopeful called for direct engagement with the Islamic republic over its nuclear program.
"We need the United States to lead tough-minded diplomacy," he said. "This includes direct engagement with Iran similar to the meetings we conducted with the Soviets at the height of the Cold War."
"Tough-minded diplomacy would include real leverage through stronger sanctions," Obama continued. "It would mean more determined U.S diplomacy at the United Nations. It would mean a cooperative strategy with Gulf States who supply Iran with much of the energy resources it needs. It would mean full implementation of U.S. sanctions laws."
Obama blamed what he called the Administration's failed strategy in Iraq for strengthening the Iranian position, placing "Israel and other nations friendly to the United States in greater peril."

what the hell is up.Its time enough for yall to stp circulating all these lies in order to destroy Obama's character.Come on give it a rest. And what if he is muslim arent they human to Gosh man
I just dont get it. When will the American people learn that AIPAC is taking their govt and their hard earned tax dollars for a ride. I believe in genuine peace between the good people of Israel and the good people of Palestine. But this will never happen while the USA govt ( the arbiter - or so called ) is controlled by AIPAC for their own interest. Come one o ye Americans learn how AIPAC is controlling your govt. Wake up and smell the coffee pls !!!
IN HEBREW AND ARABIC BARACK (OR ANY VARIATION OF IT) MEANS LIGHTNING. AND LIKE LIGHTNING, A POLITICIAN NEVER STRIKES THE SAME PLACE TWICE; WHAT THEY SAY TO ONE AUDIENCE IS NOT WHAT THEY SAY TO ANOTHER -- HOWEVER DISPARATE THAT AUDIENCE MAY BE. ONLY TIME WILL TELL WHETHER HE STRIKES ISRAEL WITH HELPFUL JOLT OF ENERGY OR HARMFUL ONE OF PERIL. AT THIS POINT, IT IS UP IN THE AIR ANF I AM LEANING TOWARDS McCAIN -- REGARDLESS OF THE OMEN OF HIS LAST NAME.
How about Guantanamo and the terrible crimes that the US commits. Israel is a good friend to America and you might like to remember the days before Arafat started the intifada, when most of the now unemployed Palestinians worked for decent salaries in Israel. Why should Israel take the chance on suicide bombers. Perhaps you think that Israel should do business with Hamas and Hezbollah. Please note how these groups treat their own people with intimidation and brainwashing.
Obama is not the type of candidate that I support for the next U.S. presidency. This unqualified support of Israel's inhumane actions toward the Palestinians and the illegal wall is not in the best interest of the American people. Obama's ignorance of the situation is appalling.
It is an undeniable fact that no candidate in the USA can even dream of being elected in a national or a major local election without paying his or her respect to AIPAC. We have earned this influence not only with our money, but mainly with our intelligence and hard work. Nobody could ever blame us for defending our holy land. Privately Obama is known to have blamed Israel for the US-Iraqi war, yet he also knows that whether elected or not, who he has to fear.
Obama cannot be an effective negotiator without putting pressure on Isreal. I guess he meansw to put more pressure on the Pallistinians! God knows they have had enough misery put on them by Isreal and US.
Obama has my vote. Y'all can do what you want, some are bloody good at whingeing. I'm required to vote in one country and I WILL vote in the other (dual citizenship). - Terry Mathis Goulburn NSW Australia dv8cowboy@bigpond.com (No, I don't hide like most of the shonky wusses here)
US has been taking the lead in the UN. Israel is involved with a website concerning Darfur. the problems in Israel don't even come close to what is going on in the Sudan and Darfur. And the Haaretz site doesn't deal with Zionism and its problems. It basically deals with Israel and the news concerning it.
I'm with your dad. I wil;l vote Republican before I vote for Obama. Not because of any Muslim connection, but because he is not the right person at the right time.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Kevin Rudd, the alternative and next Prime Minister of Australia is very Pro-American and Pro-Israel as are most Australians. Take this from a Catholic Labor man.
He will not be Pres. You really are totally unaware of US politics.
You support Obama? I wasn't aware your support or vote meant anything in the US.
I guess the point of your post is that Ethiopian Jew should be glad she was airlifted to Israel. Gee, how could you ask him/her about Darfur given the problems Haaretz indicates they are having in Israel? Get real, Darfur is horrible and US/Israel should take the lead in doing something about it instead of using that tired excuse from rah rah bad Israeli behavior supporters to thwart ANY criticism of the BS going on in Pal land. Zionists don't accept responsibility for anything but always point to somebody or something else instead of the issue at hand, which on this Haaretz site is zionism and its problems. Regards.
How secret can the bases be if you know about them? EIther you're in with the big shots, or else they're a figment of your paranoid imagination. I don't know either way, as I'm sure you don't either.
Tell that to our Johnny Howard, maybe then he will extract himself off the American war agenda! And remove American (secret) bases off Australian soil!
Hi there; I have read, along do doubt with many others, of your plight in HAARETZ, isn't that something? Haaretz published several articles indicating the discrimination and hard times you have faced along with outright discrimination in housing, etc. I have only read about it in Haaretz and hopefully your plight will be improved since you guys were airlifted. Thanks for the post. Regards. PS I am black, and don't worry, Obama will not win. I hope he does not cause I don't want black folks to be blamed for the mess the next president will inherit. We haven't been at fault up to now so there is no point in starting with Obama, a good and decent man. Colin Powell was a good choice, until he hooked on to Bush's lies and withdrew from public; besides his wife said no to a run. Keep watching and blogging. Regards.
I am so tired. As nothing moves to peace anywhere and I do my best. Can you see light anywhere?
Jane's comment about Palestinians needing to "try something new" and stop teaching their children to "hate," is priceless in its irony. Yes, let's blame Palestinian mothers for Israeli expansion, shall we? Umm, yeah. Let's mix a cocktail of racism and misogyny and call it "reason" shall we?
For such a small group of peopl are we powerful. Could it be that our parents insist on us getting an education and learn the language of the county They did not accept the dummy down of education Because of our education we realized how important thevote was. We did not riot burn down store because we needed snikers.
Hanoi Dane was raised by a pack of wild albino monkeys in a Oklahoma City toxic landfill.
Do you know where Darfur is and what is happening there? Do you know that hundreds of thousands of black Africans are being murdered by Arabs because of their ethnicity? If black is your thing go help your brothers in Darfur.
You say that Obama if he oversteps his boundaries he will be removed. How, by elections?
That is why it's so great to live in a democracy. You can always apply for a passport and look for greener pastures. Israel is not a garden of roses. But it's not a jail either and everybody is entitled to move on.
as far as i know, and i know pretty well, if any non-muslim woman marries a muslim she converts to islam. and as u can see obama's mother married 2 muslims, and lived in a muslim environment. he was a muslim by birth. at what stage did he decide to leave islam? assuming that it is unlikely that his atheist mother would not hv send him to madrassas is a big one! it is common among muslims to lure women in the west by telling they r not fanatics. then they get visa, get the woman pregnant n leave them. obama is the product of this. go to danierlpipes.org n check postings of silly women from all over europe n US who hv been duped by men from pakistan n middle east. a hussein becoming a president of United States is like that giant step of mankind that that guy on the moon did. if women find this joker goodlooking then please go n sleep with him. dont vote for him for his whatever good looks??
on my last post... You have to understand that these powerful figures don't give a hoot about the common people. The Zionists(not to be confused with the government at large) running Israel could care less about the general public. So when one critiques politicians or persons in power, this is no offense to Israelis, Arabs or Americans, or anyone else. Most of us generally want to live in peace. Those among the population who have been radicalized, have been done so by these powerful elements. That way, we are busy fighting each other, the politicians plunder us. See all the scame that politicians in all these aforementioned countries keep getting themselves into. We're not paying attention because we're busy hating each other. Think ! Politics is Violence.
"Since aipac is so powerful and influential in the world, how did the Pakistanis, Saudis, Sadams, Assads, Qadafis, Arafts and Ayatolas manage to become so influential rich and powerful?" What strange logic is this ? Genghis Khan was very powerful, but there was still room for others. Noone has managed to rule EVERYTHING, although they try. "I think you better start hiding your head in the sand becasuse AIPAC is comming after you. With head in the sand only your behind is in danger. " Statements like this do not advance the cause of peace and understanding. All the best
Indeed we often forget the shocking apartheid administered on the ethiopean jecs. Hopefully Obama will address this scandal
Allegations made below (#68) about Obama being raised by radical Muslims have been found to be untrue--see urban legends link below: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_barack_obama_muslim.htm
read my post to larry Saltzman aka. Khalid or mohammed, or just an every day anti-semite.
and I could call myself Khalid, and post here as well. You repeat the anti-semetic mantra. Try your real name, or better still go back to whatever rock you crawled out of.
I am aware that you prefer islamist propoganda. You went too far. It will be dificult for "us" to forget 9/11
It could have been worse. He might have been born jewish
...that my 81 year old father, who has been a "dyed in the wool democrat" for his entire life, said he will switch parties if Obama takes the democratic ticket for the next election. My dad had a dream recently that Obama is the anti-Christ figure, spoken of in the book of Revelations, who will bring temporary peace to the Mid East in the "end times". This article does lend itself to that possibility. Anyway, thanks for the background information on Senator Obama! We'll be watching him carefully.
This criminal spy corrupt lobby group is nothing more than an agency of the Israelic government, design to throw dollars at corrupt congressman and senators. They influence US policies to the extend that governments have no ideas why they are at war in the first place.

in Canada. Possibly you shouldn't embarass us. India is not, in the Middle East. Sad that you seem to know even less about Israel. I suspect that you are not Canadian at all.
Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a Muslim from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, an atheist from Wichita, Kansas. Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a radical Muslim from Indonesia. When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama attended a Muslim school in Jakarta. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education. Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Osama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta. Wahabism is the radical teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background.
Peace Now should be called Peace of Israel Now. "Land for peace" in negotiations with people who want All of You Land, and will not stop until they get it, will not work.
Mr. Campo - If "carrot & stick" and "trust but verify" will bring Iran back to compliance with IAEA inspections - and we all agree that is a good idea..............Why cannot we use the same methods to bring Israel into the NPT club? Why don't we want IAEA inspections of Israeli, Indian and Pakistani nuclear sites? Wouldn't that be a good thing? Nukes are Nukes! - what is this pick and choose mentality that allows the superpowers to profess that not everyone needs oversight?? I am afraid the logic of "friendship" just doesn't cut it for me! How about you? Your thoughts please........or anyone else.
Obama is just another money grabbing US politician who will do anything to get elected and re-elected. I would not be surprised if soon as he wins elections first thing he does is boost troop levels in Iraq and send in more cluster bombs and guided missiles to Israel. American politicians = No Scruples whatsoever.
That's the way you think. But if Obama goes soft on Iraq and Iran, he will lose. Remember that nothing like 9/11 ever occured on American soil before and people are still fearful and angry. Security will continue to be the number one issue for at least the next 10-15 years. On a lighter side, did you really see Borat? Anyway, it comes out over here on March 6 on DVD?
i didnt know that india is in the middle east?! did you ever study the map of the world?
Still pissed off because the Swiss thieves had to give back a little of the stolen Jewish accounts. More will follow as more Swiss banks will be exposed so we expect to hear more of your hate filled messages.
You could support Frankenstein and it wouldn't really matter since Australia as far as I know is not US territory. Yes, perhaps that label does suit you.
This what my black brother Barack Obama said is hypocrisy and shameful. He is appeasing Israel and it's racist supporter AIPAC just for winning their support for presidency. He, as a black man, should have talk to us first, blacks of Israel, to find out how this country called Israel has treated us badly since we arrived here. It is not only racist against the Palestinians, but to all non-whites. AIPAC, Mr. Obama, is no better than Israel. So, get back to your sence and to your black people in the USA and try to help them rather than to declare your support for apartheid and discrimination in Israel.
In her stand against this guy, Hillary will be sorry that she supported Bush's decision to attack Iraq. Obama should exploit that weakness to become democrat party candidate against republican's one (probably McCain or Guiliani). Based on that stand, his inexperience will both his weakness and his strength. He was just say what he had to say as a guess in AIPAC. Take care, OBAMA.
The US President(Cowboy) who was declared by Arik as a true friend of Israel, is the one who helped the rise of Hamas and demise of Arafat, same Cowboy who helped Iran to rise, did the same to Hezbola. I wonder whether there is any clever Israel whi would want a US president like Bush. The fact is his Presidency has made Americans less safe and Israelis very unsafe. The world can at least see some light in Obama, this is my opinion, a critiques is welcome
Jiuliani, Obama, Hillary, Mccain....etc, they all are for Israel in their speeches so far, any one for America or the American people and their issues?
about the fleas next morning. This kneeling before AIPAC is simply humiliating.
crowd is here. You folks should start a new organiztion:Jews afraid of Jews and i'm sure Clicky, Dutch, Maureen Ann, Hannah etc would be glad to contribute.
oh boy, if you guys think he is all for you, think again, this is the devil in priests clothing, he is talking the talk to woo as many as possible, if he wins, he will leave israel high and dry, garaunteed.he is not that innocent.
Now hurry back to your broom. It's illegaly parked & the traffic cops are below quota this weekend!!
No matter what decent people say to the Israeli or their supporter, it will not work, No one can say anything constructive and will survive the ignorance of some Israeli. Obama is doing what every running candidate will do, Kiss Israel ass to get elected. it is shame that Israel cannot see that the game is over, Peace now or another 60 years of misery. Some Israeli are crying now for the days of Arafat and the future will tell that Arafat was not the person that the Israeli Mosad and the thugs made him to be. He tried peace and Sharon and others sabotaged every move he made. One day the Israeli will cry for the Arafat Era because they will realize that he was their best chance and now it will be a miracle to find anyone to put the Palestinias house in one place and one mind. Good luck with Hamas.
Israel's thoroughly inept government should go. Failing that, they had better be speaking to Rudy Giuliani, because he's going to be the next president of the U.S.
you guys are trying to look strictly at the U.S. presidential candidates' shallow and meaningless campaign words to figure out which one is best for Israel. That is so funny! This guy's political peers consider him somewhere past Mao Tse Tung, he courts the far left by suggesting a quick retreat from Iraq (what would that tell the Jihadists about U.S. determination, huh?) and from the other corner of his mouth he courts the Jews by feeding this to you? This man would not be at all good for the spititual or economic health of the U.S. and an ailing U.S. is no good for Israel. As far as his rhetoric about standing with Israel is concerned, I suppose you believed every word Arafat spoke in english, too?
To: et al. Listen to yourselves, you guys are completely way off, & as for Mr. Banana you are, and have always been, a spokesperson-apoligists for islamists. Plain and simple. Instead of all the nostalgic RANT that you write, its alot easier just to own up to the fact that you hate Israel. Its pretty obvious--however the blind are exactly that. CaRRot and StIck diplomacy? Err! WRONG Dude! We tried that already with your Korean buddies and it didnt work. They played nice for a while, til they had enough time to build their bomb. They played CLINTON ie. DEMOCRATS, RATS! For CLOWNS AND, *ALL DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES ARE THE SAME* and now they blackmail-pimp the U.S. and int. community. Now, for Saltzman and Weiberg. What can I SAY? i suppose you reason that its, wrong to have a lobby that does exactly that, for Israel. According to your logic, Jews and Christians should be forbidden from lobbying our govt. ALTHOUGH its ok for Cubans, Greeks n Arabs. NO DOUBLE STANDARDS! BE CONSISTENT!
The ritual speaking at AIPAC by American leaders and aspiring leaders speaks volumes about the most powerful lobby in this world. Obedience to this lobby is key to money, access to media outlets and Hollywood. It is strange that the foreign policy of most powerful nation on earth is held captive by a LOBBY representing a tiny nation like Israel.
Since aipac is so powerful and influential in the world, how did the Pakistanis, Saudis, Sadams, Assads, Qadafis, Arafts and Ayatolas manage to become so influential rich and powerful? I think you better start hiding your head in the sand becasuse AIPAC is comming after you. With head in the sand only your behind is in danger. P.S do it facing Mecca
Nonsense. You compare a protective wall to those suicide bomber murderers of civilians? and before then to murderers of school children and athletes? You preach removing the wall and you don't address the original cause for the wall to have been built. You are probably among those who claim that 9/11 was a creation of the CIA and Shin Beth while denying its anarab deed inspite AlQaida proudly claims it and every muslim applauds it. Your propaganda is stale and is bogging down in the soil of truth
I'm not an Obama supporter but just to be fair, I've seen a lot of bloggers putting the emphasis on the name Hussein. The name's not important. You know why? Because there are many many Jews with the last name Nasser and that's just a fact.
G-d willing you will be President, you will be brilliant.
I think Obama is fine. The only thing I am worried about is his likening negotiating with the racist and radical Mullahs of Iran as we did in our "tough minded" negotiations during the Cold War. My view is that in the Cold War there was a respect for MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) but the Iranians have already told the world that they "love death not life". So how is this equivalent? How do you negotiate for your own destruction?
Obama is bowing to what has become the norm in American politics. You want votes? Then you suck up to the corporate suits and various right-wing, powerful and influential organizations that will help you financially. But this means selling your soul in return. The pressure is on! It's all a big game and Obama is playing it to the max. He is a smooth talker, a player who knows how to manipulate language in order to satisfy the curiousity of his audience. I would be shocked if he ends up facing a crowd in cities like Detroit where a sizeable Arab population exists. What could he possibly say to convince them that he is on their side or that he is concerned about the politics of the region as it pertains to Palestinians, Iraqis or the Lebanese? Obama belongs in Hollywood. He should consider taking up acting as a career or maybe start his own talk show. He lost my admiration and respect a long time ago.
I don't think you know what you are talking about here, If the Palestinians have anything in this world it certainly is not OIL. And what do you mean about African muslims? Oh you mean the African Muslims, Jews, And Christians who are dying from hunger do to poverty which has nothing to do with muslims, and have no way to get to Israel, Yeah those guys? And I don't recall the Palestinians being kicked out of Israel since technically there is no Palestine. Unless the palestinians are secretly making billions by pumping oil and passing it off as Saudi oil, then I really have no clue of what you're talking about. Bud, it's called Wikipedia, it's free, use it.
Obama is the first Presidential candidate to be born in the 1960's. In the future, Presidential candidates who've grown up witnessing the stranglehold that the Zionist entity has on our government since 1967, will simply keep their real views on Israel secret, even if they have to lie in order to do it. I think this approach is morally justifiable. A German co-worker of mine has grandparents who hid Jews in their basement during World War II and he said that they occasionally had to lie to the Gestapo in order to keep them hidden. I suspect that this is Obama's strategy.
Say one thing in English and a totally other thing in Arabic, a la Arafat.
I don't think that i understood the quote properly, but arabs and jews have both suffered great losses, and it will not end if Obama cosyed up with AIPAC, he needs to withdraw his stance and act as a statesman. There is no peace without Hamas i hope people out there have that in mind, that is like the Dubai ports deal; Bush couldn't have done it by leaving half the 3/4 of the population without a word in on it. By "striking an agreement" with AIPAC, Obama just said "No to Hamas you guys are not included in the talks" which means they are going to keep doing what they are doing if they don't get a large representation in the peace agreement when there is one.
Add up the number of jews murdered by arabs and the number of arabs murdered by jews and you still have an insignificant number compared to the many hundred of thousands of arabs murdered by arabs. In algeria alone, over the past ten years, more arabs have been murdered by arabs than in the entire history of the palestinians conflicts.
Obamma knows the Democratic Party is being coopted by the far left and is turning against Israel. This is how they took over the Congress. It began with virulently anti-war/Israel, Cindy Sheehan which was coupled with Saudi funded highly organized anti-Israel/Jewish propaganda on US campuses. They anointed Jew hater, Jimmy Carter, as their standard bearer and elder statesman and he rewarded them with his hateful "apartheid" book. The far left anti-Israel wing of the party can be experienced every day on Haaretz. Read all the hateful anti-Israel Talkbacks. They blitz this site like well organized professional bloggers, which they probably are. The Party is no longer the party of Truman & Kennedy and that's why Obamma is doing damage control.
Pretty good, but will he prove the most satisfying? Have to let all the candidates show what they can do.
Ben Gurion on German Jewish children, as qouted by the respected historian Martin Gilbert (and others): "If I knew that it was possible to save all the children of Germany by transporting them to England, and only half by transferring them to the Land of Israel, I would choose the latter, for before us lies not only the numbers of these children but the historical reckoning of the people of Israel". A cynical willingness to sacrifice on BG's part? The Palestinians have sacrificed far far fewer than BG was willing to ... so who is the greater terrorist? Trust me, many more Arabs have been murdered by Jews than Jews by Arabs.
Wouldn't it be great if Obama got the far-left Jewish vote who believe that Obama didn't really mean what he said in front of the AIPAC and then it turned out that he DID mean it. Maybe Obama is more honest than you self-haters realize.
Leftist love fest.
When you don't know what to do, just keep talking so the folks actually think you said something. Politicians are trained for this! So when Obama shuffles the deck, watch closely--it is still the same deck. He has no solution other than to make us think he respects Israeli leadership and Israel's soverignty (no brains needed for that), but reveals he has NO CLUE as to what Israel's enemies are about--as if a political solution from Obama's back pocket will do. Try again...try again. This time, Barack, try substance which means you have a grip on the threat of Islam. Did you FORGET 911???
You don't care that Obama sided with the AIPAC; you don't care if Obama said he would support Israel; you don't care if Obama says that Israel needs to be defended; you just don't care, because you know that he is just lying to the AIPAC, and that is why you will vote for him, because he is a liar, and a hypocrite and doesn't mean what he says. Okay, if you say so.
Only Rudi Giuliani he is the greatest supports of Jewish state the rest are fillip flaps
As someone who was there I think I can give a fuller view of his speech. One thing he said was Abbas must do better with the current deal with Hammas. The must uniquivically and explicitly accept the conditions before aid flows and recognition is given. Secondly, he said Iran must not be able to build nukes and nothing is off the table but we should engage in direct talks with Iran to see if there is a solution. Third, he said that the west must develop an alternitive to oil so that we are not dependents on mid-east oil and that our funds do not go to financing terror. All in all it was a good speech. He stated that we all want a two state solution with safe and secure borders. Everyone agrees with that except the Pals who would rather live in poverty in perpetuity. While Isreally children learn to work on computers Palistinian children learn the virtue of suicide bombing. What a great people the Pals are. Sacrificing their children for the adults sake.
As a pragmatic politician, Obama had little choice but to toe the AIPAC line if he wanted any of the campaign $$$$ that would have denied to him had he not toed that line. So you get the expected platitudes. However, a transcript of his remarks allows for a dim hope that he might treat the Israeli-Palestinian discord in an even-handed manner. He said: "That effort begins with a clear and strong commitment to the security of Israel: our strongest ally in the region and its only established democracy. That will always be my starting point…That loyalty and that friendship will guide me as we begin to lay the stones that will build the road that takes us from the current instability to lasting peace and security. It won’t be easy. Some of those stones will be heavy and tough for the United States to carry. Others with be heavy and tough for Israel to carry." Hopefully, " the heavy and tough stones for Israel to carry" refers to meaningful concessions on Israel's part.
As I intend to vote for Obama in the NY primary, I am NOT worried that he can be "bought" by AIPAC and be made to adopt right-wing anti-peace Middle East policy. Unlike many opportunistic U.S. politicians, Obama (despite his freindly talk to the hawks of AIPAC) is NOT intellectually-disadvantaged and would never, as president, allow right-wing warmongers dictate his Middle Eastern policy.
same policy diffrent skin , you don't have any thing new , thus you are not getting my vote
Goodbye Obama. I loved you for a moment...and then see you either lacking wisdom or playing for money. You are not up to the job. There will be no peace nor fairness in Israel/ Palestine until AIPAC looses its ability to manipulate opinion by using their money and influence. Israel's behavior is a disgrace to humanity and until its enablers are stopped...it will continue to grow hatred, violence and despair. I write this as a Jew who almost made Aliyah to what I thought was a struggling and fair nation.
Obama does not truly believe that Israel is the innocent victim that AIPAC and various other zionist organizations make it out to be. He is lying because he/she who licks the boots of zionism becomes president of the US. So I do not think less of him for telling this lie. It is the only way in. Of course, even when he is in, if he oversteps his boundaries too far (like JFK trying to stop Israel's nuke program) he will of course be removed. BEst of luck Obama !
without oil what else would they be able to do? look at their muslim brothers in africa - they would be begging to go back into israel for work
There is some hope afterall! Under new leadership, the U.S., IF PROPERLY MOTIVATED, could solve the Iranian problem via aggressive "carrot & stick" with "trust but verify" diplomacy. We (the U.S.) can motivate the IranianS to allow the IAEA to regularly inspect all uranium enrichment facilities making sure weapons-grade enrichment never take place; get Iran to stop supporting the militant arm of Hezbollah AND GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE! JUST DO IT!
Not because they're "blinded" as Chomsky's of the world would have you believe, but because they choose to support it. Israel will always be here. I'm an American and I'll personally fly to protect Israel if it comes under attack.
Who does he think he is? What experience does he have with international delegation? What contacts? Ill be damned if this jew votes or him, a man who had not proven hes got any balls to defend our nation and our allies.
There are plenty of Jewish-american organizations that have the aim of establishing peaceful ties with us in the middle-east, now I personally do not seek intimate relations with Israel, but I look for an understanding that suits both the Palestinians and Israelis. Building a wall is not a great way to meet these understandings, and AIPAC is a front line soldier for that cause. Now I would have believed Mr.Obamawould have made a wiser stand on that issue, but I guess I'm terribly WRONG. I highly hope that Mr.Obama is only cosying up with AIPAC to gain some votes, and I hope he doesn't follow the path of no return, which is taking a side pretty early in this issue.
I wonder what is he going to say when he is making his speech in Detroit in front of all those Arabs there.
Mr Obama said " Israel is the only established democracy in the that region" What that makes India which is, it's the most populated country in that region and I personaly think its the only democracy in that region. It looks like mr Obama is not reading the Israeli news. Mks have more previleges than other KMs, one is jew the other is arab. or one is russian jew and the other is morracon jew. How could Israel be a democracy and they are confescating Palestinian's land and keeping the whole population under occupation.
Even Democrtas are scared of his radical liberla views. He is screaming that he wants to just play the political talk game with Iran, yee Clinton did that with Al Qaida and N. Korea we see the results now. He will turn America into what Clinton did, cut the military/intelligence agencies, and just play political peace talk games. Remember Clinton administration forced Barak to give everything up at Camp David did Clinton stop Palestinian holy Jihad?? Only the liberal Jews in San Fran, Hollywood, and NY will vote for him, because they don't know anything about what goes on in the world, and as long as politicians like Obama sweet talk about Utopias they will vote.
You all should be ashamed of yourselves. If you even bother to look at American History you will see American foriegn policy is remarkably consistant. People say Kenedy was such a liberal, but he tried to invade Cuba. Examples like this are the rule rather than the exception. Where presidential Republican and Democrats do differ is on domestic policy. So save your anger and hostility... the only people who should care who wins the election are americans, as the difference may result in them having access to health care, education, or not.
Yes I'm saying that you hate Israel, based on what you are saying. #2 is preplexed, calling AIPAC and ADL zionist terrorist orgs. Do you even know that ADL exposed KKK rise in the U.S.?? #8 Roy said Israel should be a narrow strip of land with the Negev desert. Guess what whether you like it or not, Israel is not going to ask you about its size. (Your are clueless about Israeli history, stop watching Al Jazeera sponsored history programs.) #9 Don't worry Obama will go to CAIR (American Muslim lobby group) and promise them the same thing, especially because of his Islamic roots. Remember it's Hussein Obbama.
..seriously bud, chill out. Get some fresh air.
up to any country, he should be putting his own country first and declaring that he will deal equally and fairly with all other countries.
I suppose those waiting for an American president who would be willing to change policy towards Israel will have to continue waiting. When the leftist candidate with a good chance of winning declares his support of the Jewish State they can imagine what Rudy or McCain will do. So remind me, what was this last intifada for? Oh right just more blood letting for no gain at all. It's time for the Palestinians to stop expecting different results from doing the same thing over and over again. Perhaps they should try nurturing their children instead of killing them.
It is obvious he needs the cash. Quite pathetic how the American political system is *heavily* dependent on campaign contributions... This enables the big lobbies to dictate government policy rather than serve the best interests of the masses. Well, Obama can suck up for the money, but like every good politician, I hope he LIES and enables the USA to become an honest broker in the ME instead of obey the commands of the AIPAC mafia.
Obama is the one to bring peace to the middle east.He will not abandon the jewish state or the Palestinains . He will be fair minded despite great preasure from AIPAC. However, the Israelis must end their expansionist dreams. The final jewish state must be a narrow strip of land along the coast plus the Negev. It will be both prosperous, safe and peacefull. The Palestinians likewise will be safe and in time prosperous in the West Bank and Gaza..
... and has my absentee-ballot vote if he makes it past the primaries. I wish him luck in becoming Dubya's successor and even more luck in fixing what eight years of Bush rule has done to the US and the world. Especially in the Middle East.
This is the politics of the moment. Politics is fluid and tries to fit the issue of the moment. Until politicians are knowledgeable of the Middle East situation and the nature and threats that Islamist-Jihadism poses to the non-world, they still do not know what they are talking about. It is like crossing a muddy river without knowing that it is infested with crocodiles. Offering simplistic solutions to complex problem is not the answer. Advocating talking with the wolves such as Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia, and quitting Iraq because the going is tough shows a lack of knowledge of the Middle East and Islamist-Jihadism. I would suggest they gain a good education on the subject by reading books on the subject by brilliant experts such as: Mark A. Gabriel PhD, Gregory M. Davis PhD, Daniel Pipes PhD, Dore Gold PhD, Rachel Ehernfeld PhD, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, Brigitte Gabriel, Oriana Fallaci, Kenneth R. Timmerman, Gerald Posner, Robert Baer, Ibn Warraq, and Walid Shoebat.
Like Hillary, Rudy, Romney et al. All American presidential wannabes know they must pledge blind allegiance to Zionist aggresssion in order to be allowed to run. The result: the US Army has become an imperialistic force dispatched to fight for the expansion of Eretz Israel.
Do you mind me asking, what is a Schlemielburg? I support Obama, in contrast to Australia's racist PM! Does that make me a Schlemielburg?
It's sad that American politicians feel the need to cater to AIPAC. AIPAC does more harm for the state of Israel than good. It is AIPAC which is preventing true peace in Israel and Palestine. Obama, Clinton, Guiliani and the rest of them should speak to Peace Now, and stop buttering up to those organizations who truly do NOT seek peace.
Until American politicans stop bowing to the ultra-reactionary AIPAC our foreign policy will be held hostage by Israel and by a small group of neo-conservatives in this country. Israel is just a country and should be subjected to the same scrutiny and criticism that any other country is. The policy of AIPAC, and other extremist, pro-terrorist Zionist groups like the ADL, will in the end backfire on America and especially on American Jews. Already people are waking up to the terrible crimes Israel committs in the occupation and to the folly of America blindly supporting Israel.
Obama was (probably still is) against Israel's security barrier, and was agasinst President Bush's decision to boycott Arafat. If pushed ever came to shove, there is NO WAY, Obama would lift a finger to help Israel . Also, it is clear that Iran would be overjoyed if this guy got elected - his "tough minded diplomacy", in plain English, means full speed ahead for the Iranian bomb. Lastly, of course, the Schlemielbergs of the world love him - as evidenced by Obama's predictable Hollywood support.
