Immigration officials: Gaza op hasn`t deterred infiltration of migrants from Egypt
168 migrants infiltrated from the Sinai Peninsula within the first nine days of fighting.
Immigration officials on Monday said that the Israel Defense Forces operation in Gaza has not deterred migrants from infiltrating into Israel via its border with Egypt.
Yaakov Ganot, who heads the National Immigration Authority, told the Knesset Committee on Foreign Workers that 168 migrants infiltrated from the Sinai Peninsula within the first nine days of fighting.
"The war has had no effect," said Ganot, adding that, according to his estimates, this month's average number of infiltrators will be about 600 - the same as any other month.
According to Ganot, 5,230 migrants infiltrated into Israel from its southern border in 2007 and 7,580 entered in 2008.
