IDF troops kill Palestinian in clashes at Gaza border

IDF spokesman says Palestinian gunman hurled grenade at soldiers, who responded by firing back.

Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian in an exchange of fire near the northern Gaza Strip's border with Israel on Friday, hospital officials and the Israeli military said.

The military said an army force patrolling the border identified a Palestinian gunman planting explosives near the security fence along the border, east of Gaza City.

The gunman threw a hand grenade at the soldiers, who responded by firing back, it said in a statement.

Gaza emergency services chief Mo'aweya Hassanein said one gunman was killed. A second gunmen was taken to hospital with moderate wounds.

The military said it was the second attempt this week by Palestinian militants to plant explosive devices near the border fence.

Tensions have risen in Gaza over the past weeks, with a number of fatal incidents recorded following months of relative calm.

In the winter of last year Israel responded to near daily rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza on its southern communities by launching a devastating three-week offensive in the coastal strip run by the radical Islamist Hamas movement.

Some 1,400 Palestinians, many of them civilians, were killed according to rights groups.

Both Hamas and Israel had largely observed an unofficial truce in the year following the Gaza war, but in recent weeks factions and individual militants not linked to Hamas have stepped up their sporadic attacks, prompting Israel to respond with air strikes.

The blockade of Gaza was a non-violent response to Hamas violence i.e. rockets, mortars, snipers, infiltrations etc., and the blockade can end anytime Hanas wants it to. Simply recognize Israel's right to exist! End the violence and enter into direct negotiations with Israel and it's over. Yet they cannot even bring themselves to do that and prefer their self inflicted situation, and worse, blame it on Israel.

"that is what called "slow ethnic cleansing". NO Tony, it's called preventive measures since Hamas promised to kidnap more Israeli's and had been detected tunneling in the area Instead of writing so much, hop on over, we're waiting for you

When a nation has detected the enemy tunneling under the borders it has every right protect itself against further tunneling, especailly when the enemy has clearly stated tht the purpose of the tunnels was to kidnap the soldiers of the nation being tunneled into

First, let's start with your idea that Israel has the right to shoot at them while they are doing it. This right does not exist. When a nation fearing invasion puts up strictly defensive barriers on its own territory, it is exercising a fundamental right and no one has the right to interfere. If the measures had an offensive nature, that might make it another case, but they don't. Next, the UN may have a group speaking out against laying mines, but that is just a group; the UN as a body has never ruled on this.

Palestinians have as much right to weapons as Israelis do. It takes some special sort of chutzpah to use tanks and Apache helicopters and F-15 fighter planes, not to mention illegal phosphorous bombs, against unarmed civilian women and children in Gaza, and then demand the other side can?t defend themselves. I think every country in the world should have the same rights as Israel and the US to have whatever weapons they want.

Israeli forces have no right whatsoever to impose their will and pre- sence along the border of Gaza and in the Palestinian territories as they are illegally occupying sovereign Palestinian land in defiance of international law. You ought to get that straight and stop granting Israeli forces rights they simply don';t have...It is atrocious misrepresentation of the law and Palestinian rights by the outlaws and land thieves in Israel..... But it was not published. It was the following: Can't you leave these people alone even on THEIR side of the fence? I thought Israel had 'withdrawn' from Gaza. What a joke.

You are half correct about nations exercising a right. Gaza has the right; Israel doesn't. There IS a UN group speaking out against laying mines, but then again there are groups speaking out about many things. The important thing is that there is no legal restriction against any nation using strictly defensive measures such as mines on its own territory to defend itself. Unless and until legal steps are taken to ban such strictly defensive measures Israel is completely in the wrong shooting across a border to prevent another nation from defending itself.

Okay...let us forget all about what Mark from Georgia wrote....though I agree 100% with him. Let us focus on right to defend. The Palestinians have every right to try to lay down mines and the Israelis have every right to shoot at them while they are doing it. As we all know there is a United Nations group speaking out about laying mines. The idea is not to get caught. But Israel has the right to stop people from doing it ..when they see them. Hamas has the right to shoot back. That is war.

You (as usual) leave out so much of the truth that your post is (as usual) completely biased. The traps they are setting for the IDF can only work if the IDF invades their country. While I understand you consider them untermenschen, they still have the right to defend their country.

As in the past when there is a Hudna (ceasefire) the Palestinians use it as an opportunity to rebuild their depleted weapons. Is this situation any different? The short answer is, of course not! While Syria is rearming Hezbollah the same is taking place in Gaza. Even this week the only generator that supplies electricity ran out of gas. Why? Because the infighting never stops among the Pals, they would rather smuggle weapons and cigarettes than the basics. They would rather try and set traps for the IDF...for a upcoming war... instead of providing needed infrastructure for its general population. These so called Pal leaders would rather plan for war with the IDF...a war they cannot win, except as a possible PR victory playing the underdog...than actually plan for a real country. It is unbelievable that the leaders would rather play beggars, than build a country. One wonders when the man in the street Pal will wake up to this sick con game their leaders play with them.
