IDF releases video of air strike on Gaza rocket squad

Three Palestinian militants killed in air strike; Jihad vows to 'teach Israel a lesson' after attack.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Hamas Islamic Jihad Israel news Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces on Saturday released footage of an air strike the previous evening on a group Gaza militants who were launching a rocket into Israel.

The Palestinian militants were all killed in the air strike, which took place east of Gaza City.

The IDF said in a statement that the men belonged to the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad. It also said they had been part of cell that had fired Qassam rockets into Israel over the past few weeks, including the cross-border attack on the recent Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

The IDF identified the men as Mahmoud Mussah Rammadan Bana, Kamel Hamdan Ibrahim Dahduh and Mohamed Salem Barawi Marshoud.

In the statement, the army warned that it would "respond harshly to any attempt to break the calm in Israel's southern communities."

Following IAF strike, Jihad vows to 'teach Israel a lesson'

Following the air strike, Islamic Jihad vowed to exact revenge and "teach Israel a lesson," Army Radio reported.

The Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported that the three men were affiliated with Islamic Jihad's armed wing, the Al-Quds Brigades, and that one of the dead militants was the son of slain Al-Quds leader Khaled Dahduh.

Gaza militants fired a Qassam rocket and several mortar shells into Israel following the air strike, but caused no injuries or damage.

Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum said Friday that "it isn't strange that Israel continues to attack, what is strange is that the Palestinian Authority continues to attend summits in New York with the Israeli occupation."

The Al-Quds Brigade issued a statement warning of its imminent revenge, saying that the "Zionist enemy will suffer serious retaliation."

"How is firing rockets at civilians in Sderot "fighting back?" It's the desperate kicking of a place (Gaza)being strangled to death by Israel...it makes Israel angry that Gaza won't simply lie down and die quietly. Israel controls every aspect of life in Gaza. And don't you ever forget or doubt it. Would you "fight back" under the circumstances Gazas are forced by Israel to live under? I would...wouldn't you?

Gaza was Egyptian controlled territory- Arnold My understanding is that Gaza was never part of Egypt proper. Israel controls the ins and outs except the smuggling. When the Palestinians accept Israel and stop shooting, then and only then can the two groups talk about Gaza taking control of their own ins and outs.-Arnold I do not think that that it can happen that way. Israel will never give anything it is not compelled to. The PLA ceased armed struggle years ago. They have achieved nothing by doing so. Hamas took note of this and I believe that Meshal stated in an interview that Israel has reneged on every agreement since Oslo and that is why Hamas takes a hard line. It will want results first. But I doubt that it can happen that way either. Yes they will continue to lose. Do you realize that 70 % of Palestinians and Israelis have been born since the 1967 war? It has become institutionalized. The Israelis under 40 think of the occupation and land expropriations as the natural order of things. The Palestinians under 40 have never known Israel except as an enemy occupation force. BTW, Netanyahu has made clear that Israel will maintain control of Palestinian airspace. Israel will never allow the Palestinians complete sovereignty

Israel has controlled the west bank and Gaza since 1967. All entry and exit in these territories are controlled, all materials controlled, and life and death determined by the IDF, I would say that is a prison. The mantra that Israel withdrew and then the rockets started. But they were still in prison, so what changed? They are in the same prison but no longer with an Israeli population inside. When the Palestinians held an election, Israel refused to recognize the results. Israel seems to think that it must approve who can, and cannot be elected to office. Somewhat like the Iranian supreme council does. Hamas has said that it would abide by any peace deal that ABBAS made. It also renounced suicide bombers. But Israel would refuse to talk with Abbas if Hamas were included in the PLA. Israel held the Gaza Palestinians in prison long before Hamas appeared on the scene. Furthermore, the PLO once had a charted similar to Hamas. They evolved over time to take a more moderate position. Why shouldn?t Hamas if given the opportunity?

"What is not surprising is Hamas continues to directly & indirectly sacrifice Palastinians & continues to attempt to murder, maime & terrorize Israelies." - Brad The men trying to attack Israel were Islamic Jihad, not Hamas. "Of course, the word attack is loaded & mileading." - Brad An attack is to set upon forcibly. Thus the IDF endeavored to attack those who were intending to attack Israel. "This is not an attack as in an offensive operation." - Brad Then you do not comprehend what constitutes an 'attack.' The IDF was engaged in a defensive action by attacking, acting forcibly against, the Islamic Jihad forces. The meaning of the word 'attack' has nothing to do with whom you do or do not like. The IDF did the right thing. It attacked men intent upon attacking Israel.

"Here`s a quiz. Prior to 1967 Gaza was: 1) Part of an independent Palestinian nation 2) Controlled by Israel 3) Cruelly ruled by Egypt 4) Home of the tooth fairy." - hmp49 The answer is 5, neither of the above. In 1967 Gaza was part of the former Palestine Mandate which was the responsibility of Egypt by way of the 1948 cease fire line. It was not well administrated by Egypt, but the Egypt occupation was far more decent and humane than the Israeli occupation has been. Your argument is ingnorance. "How is firing rockets at civilians "self defense?" - hpm49 It isn't. It is terrorism. How is firing White Phosphorous and Cluster Munitions at civilians self-defense? It isn't, it is terrorism. So, does Israel have the right to kill those terrorist attacking Israeli civilians wrong? Yes, it is self-defense, a right of EVERY civilization. How are citizens of Gaza engaging in self-defense when they fire rockets against Israeli civilians? They are not. They are just sowing terror.

Before the 1967 War , Gaza was Egyptian controlled territory. It was offered back to Egypt as part of the peace agreement betweeen them and Israel. Egypt said we'll take back the Sinai...you can have Gaza. Why did Egypt not want Gaza ? Today Gaza is 100% Jew free. Israel controls the ins and outs except the smuggling. When the Palestinians accept Israel and stop shooting, then and only then can the two groups talk about Gaza taking control of their own ins and outs. Then and only then will they be able to control their air space and waterways. They can attempt to be freedom fighters. They WILL continue to lose.

The world is fed up with the Palestinians. They have given them money and the money has gone for naught or ended up in some Swiss account. Same as Arafat. Why is it that the Palestinians would prefer to still wage a losing war on Israel. I'll tell you why. because they are lambs being led to slaughter by their leadership. Hamas refuses to recognize Israel. If they did it would open the door to the peace. But Hamas does not want that. So alas the bloodshed continues.

Everyone understands a little fighting back. What people can't understand is continuing the fight. There comes a time when intelligent people, when up against overwhelming odds, make an intelligent choice. But the Gazans have not made it yet, you have not made it yet. The truth is now clear, however, to three heroic freedom fighters, as they merrily partake of their 216 virgins. Gotta look at the positive side, dude.

I cannot understand the position of some folks on this forum. The Islamic Jihad men hit were about to shoot a rocket so inaccurate that they have small chance of hitting a small city. This rocket is incapable of being used as anything but a terrorist weapon against civilians. The actions of Islamic Jihad only serve to give excuse to those Israelis who don't wish a Palestinian state exist and do wish to reign havoc upon Palestinian civilians. I can think of nothing that justifies what they were trying to do. And I can think of no reason why the IDF shouldn't defend Israel against any attempt to attack it by Islamic Jihad.

Not 40 years. Your history needs work. Even during the Intifadas, thousands of Gazans were commuting to jobs every day in Israel. Then Israel decided to leave Gaza, which started a real rocket blizzard. And the next year, Gazans decided to vote for Hamas, who promised to fight against Israel for all time no matter what. So, Israel is in a de facto war with Gaza, and you cannot expect the border to be wide open. If you are sincere in wanting to better the life of the Gazans, go down there and organize another election, this time with sensible candidates. If you are successful, there will be no need for rockets or freedom fighters, or blood. Gazans will again be welcome to go to jobs in Israel. Try it, you will see. Just posting nonsense does not help at all.

Note that during Ramadan and the recent holiday of Id El Fitr many Israeli Arabs crossed into the area known as Area A, the section of the West Bank desingated under Palestinian Authority. They will shortly be allowed to take cars across to shop and visit relatives, and busses are being sponsored so that people can travel inexpensively, encourage business, and promote the economy in the West Bank. Too bad the people with the rocket launchers in Gaza appear to be interested in firing rockets and teaching Israel a lesson rather than promoting their own people's welfare. It would be nice if people could cross the border into Gazas as well, but there are some who are determined that this not happen.

When will the Palestinians learn that as long as they continue to fire missiles into Israel, misery will remain the daily norm? Smarten up Palestinians, for the sooner you recognize Israel as the Jewish state, the sooner your own lives and economy will flourish. Abba Eban once said "The Palestinians never lost an opportunity to lose an opportunity" Change your tune and you will be surprised how quickly your lives will improve. For the sake of your children, don't lose another opportunity.
