IDF recommends maintaining pressure on Hamas despite decline in Qassams
Top IDF officials warn cabinet that agreeing to temporary cease-fire would allow Hamas to amass strength.
By Amos HarelDespite the sharp decline in the number of Qassam rockets fired from the Gaza Strip in the past two days, defense officials have recommended that Israel maintain military pressure on Hamas.
Only 13 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza in the past two days.
Senior Israel Defense Forces officers warned the cabinet that agreeing to a temporary cease-fire would help Hamas amass military strength and extend the range of its ballistic capabilities.
This would also enable Hamas to better its defensive deployment in anticipation of future Israeli incursions into the Gaza Strip, the officials said. Decision makers as well as senior IDF officers say they believe Hamas must not be allowed to walk away from the slaying of a Sderot woman Monday, who was struck by a Qassam rocket near her home.
Some cabinet members agree with the IDF that Israel must make Hamas pay for Shir-el Friedman's death, and the subsequent evacuation of thousands of Sderot residents, ¬ events Hamas might present as a victory in the current round of hostilities.
Defense establishment officials say that Hamas has successfully used its perceived exploits in Sderot to draw attention away from its militants' slaying of several operatives from the rival Fatah faction, its partner in government and adversary in the Gaza Strip.
Major-General Keith Dayton, the U.S. security coordinator to the Palestinian Authority, called the current situation in Gaza "anarchy" on Wednesday. Speaking Wednesday before the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs in Washington, Dayton added that Hamas was striving to destroy Israel, while trying to dispense with all forces loyal to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
Dayton also said that Hamas was receiving military aid from Syria and Iran. Dayton noted that Abbas' American-trained Presidential Guard had successfully fended off Hamas' recent attacks, primarily in the Karni Crossing.

that although I find these quassam attacks incredibly stupid on the part of Hamas Israels settlement building and continued oppression of the pals is aggravating and provoking this conflict? Can you understand that, at all??? There are innocents on all sides getting killed, innocents on both sides tired of ALL the violence. Violence begets violence. It is a nasty, ugly, deadly cycle. You won't be able to, and neither will hamas be able to kill enough of the 'enemy' to be safe. or kill enough to prove a point, or kill enough to get all the land you want(unless you plan on killing/expelling all pals?) Obviously to me, there are too many on each side who have not killed enough. Very saddening.
The Hamas Polictal prisoners i.e. the Mayor etc should be kept in a House in Sderot whilst these rockets are still being fired by Hamas. Let them carry on killing there own people too.
"Decision makers as well as senior IDF officers say they believe Hamas must not be allowed to walk away from the slaying of a Sderot woman Monday", and there you have it in black and white once again, israelis think their lives are worth 1000 times more than any other human being, while the idf has killed numerous innocent people since the incursion. pathetic, and israelis wonder why so many are against them.
"have you not been reading the news"Adrian de Klerk Yes i have.. obviously you haven't its about a group of people fighting an occupation who have no control over their airspace, territorial waters, borders, the tax system, electricity, water, supply of goods population registry the list go's on. Its about Israel and America arming and training Fatah to take on Hamas who were democratically elected by the Palestinians who's charter is similar to that of the founders of the Zionism who wanted the whole of palestine for the Jews at the expence of the Palestinians, and what is Israel offering besides expanding settlements? nothing but more of the same..
Of course the IDF must be very worried by the sharp decline in rocket attacks. Heaven forbid they stop altogether. If that were to happen the IDF would have to restart its policy of carefully targetting families to provoke the revulsion which makes Israel what it is today. Surely a combination of the Mossad, Shin Bet and IDF can arrange to fire off a few rockets themselves - Zionists have their proud traditions you know: and terror attacks on Jews will make many an old bigot tearful at the memory of the happy days of the Stern Gang.
israel has proved last summer that they are fed up with islamist terrorist in lebanon and palestine.when ever they start to crash they suffer alot and they com eback quickly so the palstinians and hezbollah prove their powers. now they can fire missiles freely, they are doing what strong arab governments can not do and they have the courage to continue and they are willing. does israel has the courage to defend israel? the answer is no because they get the orders from washington. and the hamas and hezbollah are home grown millitary.
Never to be lifted.
Have you not been reading the news?? The pals dont want "peace", the best they will ever offer Isreal is a cease "fire."
The best defense is a good and severe attack. The Hamas movement must understand that we are not joking. Kill their leaders, cut the snake head, then if they want to talk we could said "have you learned?" Remember the french army in Algier.
If our pathetically weak government takes its foot of the gas now there will be riots in the street. Even now it is playing footsy with Hamas. We keep reading 'building bombed - no casualties'. This is not retaliation for the kassams ! 'PA Parliament bombed - 120 killed!' would be retaliation and would stop the kassams immediately! Can you imagine the reaction of the US, Russia, a European country - anywhere in fact - if a group was firing rockets at one of its cities ?! Look what the Lebanese army said yesterday 'surrender or die!'. Let's hope Labor quits the coalition and Israel Beiteinu too. We need a leadership with balls and not the corrupt Olmert junta !
"Only 13 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza in the past two days". "Only" 13 rockets? Is this a joke?
Crush these dirtbags Israel!!!Wayne. Why's that?..because they're resisting and fighting back against the occupation and oppression by Israel or because Israel and America's arming and training Fatah hasn't paid off. Dream on dirtbags Hamas aren't going anywhere, and they're going to be a thorn in your arse until you fools get your heads out of the sand and start negotiating a settlement The Arab Peace Initiative or The Fools with their heads buried in the sand, you chose.
The Lebanese Army is going after the terrorists in the camp up there, and giving them one more chance to give themselves up or the army will go in full force and get them. No international outrage heard yet. So it's time the IDF did the same thing with the terrorists of Hamas in Gaza. To back down now and let them regroup (again~!) would be crazy.
AND THIS IS WHERE THE IDF SHOULD TRY TO BRING BACK.WHERE THERE IS TO KASSAM THREAT TO ISREAL.FOR EVERY ONE KASSAM THAT LANDS IN ISREAL TEN ISREAL ROCKETS SHOULD LAND IN GAZA.
The IDF should start following orders of the Lebenese Defence Minister and clean out the nest of terrorists in gaza.Use the same ultimatum as the Lebenese Minister uses.Surrender or die.The IDF must learn from this minister HE KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE THE ARAB MENTALITY.And the leb is not a coward like peretz and his corrupt boss olmert. He gets the action going with less than Israel has got.
No doubt about it, Israel is looking at the relative calm of 5 rockets a day compared to 75 and is saying OK to a truce - perhaps on the West Bank as well, which was the goal of the Unity government all along. Back now to waiting for Shalit.
Hamas has proven itself to be none other than a bunch of terrorists. Their stated objective is the elimination of Israel. There will never be peace as long as Hamas and other terrorist groups are allowed to operate in Israel. Unless the Israeli government allows their military to crush these terrorist scumbags, the Palestinian and Israeli people will continue to suffer. Hamas has brought the IDF upon themselves, and they will have to suffer the consequences of their barbaric ways. Crush these dirtbags Israel!!!
,a typical "Haaretz" appeasenick. Or has the "Haaretz" relocated its offices to Sderot perhaps?
