IDF opposes proposed cuts in Defense Ministry's budget
Army not calmed by treasury's plan to restore some defense expenditures with funds saved by implementing across-the-board cuts.
By Amos HarelThe Israel Defense Forces is strongly opposed to proposed cuts to the defense budget, part of an across-the-board ministerial budget cut proposal being brought to the cabinet for approval Sunday.
The IDF has not been calmed by the treasury's plan to restore some defense expenditures with funds saved by implementing the across-the-board cuts.
The cabinet is expected to vote Sunday on the Finance Ministry's proposal to cut six percent of each ministry's budget. The proposed cuts, which are expected to yield NIS 700 million, will then be used for defense and education purposes.
A six-percent cut in the Defense Ministry's budget is valued at NIS 480 million.
In three meetings with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Ministry representatives had the chance to point out the cuts' implications.
Defense sources said the cuts will have a serious impact on Israel's defensive capabilities, and insist that treasury officials and other ministers are unaware of the severity of the current security situation.
IDF sources said that the cuts mean there will be less reservist and in-flight pilot training time, and necessary procurements will have to be postponed.
The IDF's main opposition to the cuts is not their size but their timing. Senior IDF sources told Haaretz it is very difficult to carry out the cuts at this time, since a significant portion of the annual budget has already been spent, while other parts are bound by contracts.
They said the proposed cuts are similar to a NIS 750 million budget cut at the start of the year.
The sources said that those cuts that can be made include fewer reservist training days and flight training, and a delay in the delivery of arms and ammunition.
Military sources said that under certain circumstances, the IDF would consider cancelling a brigade-size exercise of one of the army's standing units, which is set to take place in the upcoming months.
As part of the lessons of the Second Lebanon War, the IDF has been conducting intensive standing army and reserve unit training.
The across-the-board ministerial cuts are primarily aimed at boosting the Home Front and parts of the defense establishment, as well as education.
However, the IDF General Staff would prefer that extra funding for other security purposes, including intelligence, originate from cuts from other ministries, not the Defense Ministry.

You have a civilian leadership as dumb as Donald Rumsfeld and Bush.
While it will make the Bush Administration unhappy, dump that useless Missile Defense System. God forbid, that you should have to invade anyone, but ground troops and air support should be high on you agenda. Privatization must have weakened your forces. The military must control their own logistics.
This sort of thing was expected from Peretz, but who is responsible for smacking Olmert upside the head now?
When the government wants money they take it from defense because unless there is a war other than the men who put their lives on the line to fight wars started by politcians who cares or notices what they do or dont get unless there is a war and are under equiped. In Lebanon as a result of succesive budget cuts there were men going into battle without the very basics and a lack of training for reserves because there was no money for training. The average voter doesnt look at how much was spent on the millitary when they go out and vote as long as they can go about their ordinary day to day lives what happens but only when it comes to Lebanon and other wars does anybody sit up take notice but politicians dont campaign on support given to the millitary Olmert is another of many politicians who have been using this trick since the late 80s at least the difference is last year Olmert promised an essential increase but instead now wants to cuts. Failings forgoton politics as usual.
This guy said he was going to raise the budget and now we get this. He led us to disaster in Lebanon, he has facilitated in the rise of hamastan. Syria is inching closer to war, Iran is racing to be a nuclear power....and we have this double talkinking sniveling, power hungry man who has absolutely no sense of duty to the people he was elected to serve. We want new elections NOWWWW!!! ENOUGH OF THE KADIMA SPINNN MACHINE!!!!
We should be investing all our money in our defense now that we have hamastan in the south, hezbollah that have rearmed and bolstered, Syria eyes on the golan and Iran looming in the back ground building nuclear missiles....and the bureaucrats want to tcut the defense budget! These people must be the stupidist lot ever compromising a government. I mean are they on drugs or are they just plain morons...seriously?? We should be putinng all our resources into the defense getting ready fro the coming storm, but the olmert/kadima govt in its consistency want to weaken further Israel.....Olmert has taken over the mantle from Barak as the worst PM in Israeli history. He has a 3% approval rating and yet he will not budge from his seat, a man that cares not for his people but only his personal power!!! BIBI for PM!!!
Now is the time to put as much money as we can in our defense. These bureaucrats have learned nothing from hamastan and the war with hezbollah, all they care about is money. We are facing so many threat all around us it should be a non issue that money be lavished on the IDF....BUT NO, not with these feckless leaders who are contemptible, and corrupt...DISGUSTING!!!
We are about to face multiple engagements and they are thinking of cutting the defense budget!!!! Are these people for real, are they completely disconnected to the morale and threat perceptions on the israeli street and arab/persian governments plans. Instead of cutting we should be raising the budget to new heights. building the home front, bunkers, and municipalities dealing with emergency situations. Being able to function without a centralizing authority if need be...But tnone of this is happening, it is appalling, scaring and unbelievable. WHatever this govt proposes I have learned that the right way is to do the exact opposite!!!!
After the Lebanon fiasco just 1 year ago the government was promising to increase the defense budget because it became obvious how much damage succesive budget cuts had done to IDF. Now after all these big promises of increasing the defense budget not only is Olmert not delivering what he promised but instead he wants to cut the budget even more .. at this rate Israels millitary will look like a thrid world army using equipment that is long past its use by date, soilders and pilots who have so little training they end up getting themselves killed. Saudi Arabia last year spent more money on defense than Israel has spent on the IDF in nearly a deacde, Syria, Iran, Egypt and other states spending heavily on modern millitary equipment and training while Israel does the opposite Under Olmert though its not a surprise, the man snubbed a memorial service now he is cutting a budget last year he believed needed to be increased. Is this all about budgetinig for his retirement package?
