IDF kills two Gaza militants trying to plant bomb near border fence

IDF: Gunmen were shot after ignoring warning fire; 4 Qassams fired from Gaza, one lands in Ashkelon.

By Haaretz Service and Mijal Grinberg AP

Israel Defense Forces troops on Saturday killed two Palestinian militants trying to plant a bomb on the Gaza-Israel border.

An IDF army spokeswoman said Yachiah Barakat, 24, and Tamer al-Khatib, 23, were shot near Beit Lahia after they were spotted laying explosives, where a security fence separates Israel from Gaza.

IDF troops that searched their bodies found the men were carrying rifles, grenades and explosive devices.

The men reportedly belonged to a militant offshoot of Fatah, the faction headed by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. In a text message sent to reporters, the group said the two were on a "holy mission."

On Friday evening, Palestinian militants fired a Qassam rocket into the western Negev, several hours after an earlier Qassam landed in Ashkelon.

The first rocket landed in an open field in the Ashkelon's southern industrial zone. The city is not often pelted with rockets, as Palestinian militants in Gaza tend to target western Negev towns east of the Strip, rather than Ashkelon which lies north of Gaza. The rocket sparked a fire in the field, but no one was injured and no damage was caused.

The second rocket landed in a western Negev community, damaging several homes. As in the previous attack, no one was injured.

Two more rockets were launched later Friday evening, one in Sderot and the second in a town nearby. Neither rocket caused damage or injuries.

At least 7 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel since Thursday. One of them struck a home in the western Negev city of Sderot. The members of the family living there were treated for shock.

One rocket on Thursday landed near a gas station. No one was injured, and no property was damaged.

Also Thursday, five Palestinians, including Islamic Jihad's military leader, were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

You say he was once very pro-Israel..well, people can change their minds;I've changed mine about several issues after learning a lot of things from you.He may just have gone the other way.And he is correct, that people defending Israel have to accept critical questions from the other side.I know you've served in the US Army and the IDF.I can't understand why those two Palestinians were trying to blow the fence up anyway; the IDF would hear the explosion, what would be the point? The Palestinians would get shot as they ran through the hole in the fence, they could hardly cover ten feet before being killed..bit of a pointless operation; wonder what their objective was.. The Israeli poster Paul Harris always calls Dutch "Doris Magelin, or Doris" (although I think Dutch is a guy) so I probably got it mixed up with you. Sorry. Once when you were..um..politely discussing an issue with Dutch I thought you called him/her Doris Magelin. About England, too..sorry for what they did in the past, but Ben, it is past, you've got to look forward, if you don't how can there ever - ever be any solution to the problem? I can assure you honestly that if it seemed that posters in this thread were gloating over the deaths of two Israelis instead of two Palestinians, I would feel just as disgusted. It's in poor taste to rejoice over any deaths at all...as for the celebration and candy and sweets for the martyrs, can you imagine if they get to heaven and are told, Sorry, no virgins left for you two, instead we've got to give you 72 goats..the two guys would look at each other and both say, It was your idea to bomb the fence!

In any event, his writing, no matter which side he took, was very juvenille and still is.

You are perfectly correct that an American, or a citizen of any other country, has the right to question the tactics of Israel. And I agree that the country in which a person is born should have first allegiance, even if, like with me, there are ties to another country. To take a balanced viewpoint one has to be ready to hear all sides of a question. If a person replies with only fury and abuse to a politely put question, they are being fanatical and intolerant. In this Talkback particularly there are a lot of posters praising the IDF for killing the two Palestinians, gloating over their deaths in fact. This is bloodthirsty and really distasteful. It makes them what they hate the most. Regards

Thanks for your post. I know the Palestinians have, unfortunately, been fighting among themselves in Gaza, but I'm surprised that Israel allowed any in. I only want to see a peaceful solution to the tragic situation between Israel and the Palestinians. So many posters here delight in the killing of each side, and that's so wrong. I really think the two state solution is the only way to achieve a lasting peace, for Israel and Palestine to live side by side in amity. Regards

I lived in London during part of the IRA bombing campaign. The office building I worked in had bomb threats every week, it was a social security building, and we walked through shops terrified that there would be a very large bang. I saw a building the IRA blew up and a car they firebombed. None of it was friendly.

Then you are saying what I already said; that too many innocents on both sides have died and are dying now as we speak. There has got to be some sort of a solution, and I believe that only the two state solution has any chance of ending the violence. When the Palestinians get their state they won't have any reason to fire rockets into Israel. All the time they don't have their own country and live in desperate circumstances there will be rockets falling on Israel, because they've got (or think they've got) a grievance. Take away the grievance by givng them a country and you take away the reasons they claim for violence. Hopefully.

Special Report HAIFA, Israel (AP) -- Nothing seemed unusual when passengers stepped aboard Marwan Damouni's No. 37 bus Wednesday, wearing bulky jackets to ward off the cold. Then the bus stopped, the doors swung open and a suicide bomber inside blew himself up. The bomb attack killed 15 people and the bomber and injured dozens. Police said most of the victims ---- nine or 10 ---- were teenage high school students, among them 14-year-old Avigail Leitner, a U.S. citizen. Police did not immediately have details of her links to the United States. The army said another two of the dead were soldiers The blast opened fresh wounds in this northern port city, where Arabs and Jews have lived in relatively peaceful coexistence. Israel blamed Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian Authority for failing to stop attacks. Palestinian Authority officials denounced the attack and rejected the Israeli charges. In an unusual development, no militant group had claimed responsibility for the bombing hours after the blast tore the bus apart. "Some people were still wearing winter jackets," said Damouni, 31, driver of the bus, who opened his eyes to find his arms covered with his passengers' blood. "This time I didn't question anybody. After all that we've seen and lived through, this situation is very bad." Drivers are supposed to look out for suspicious passengers, especially signs of a bomb strapped to a terrorist's waist, and drivers have foiled several attacks, but many complain that the security duty is too much to ask of them. The bomb was "medium sized" but laced with metal shrapnel for greater deadliness, according to Israeli Police Commissioner Shlomo Aharonishki. Police said the bomber boarded the bus with explosives strapped to his body. A heavy jacket could have hidden the bomb. Damouni, a Christian Arab Israeli who had been driving a bus for seven years, miraculously escaped Wednesday's explosion with a few scrapes and bruises. Some of the dead were believed to be students from nearby Haifa University. Most of the 55 injured were under 40, hospital officials said. The blast happened just after 2 p.m. (1200 GMT) in a residential area where university students often flock to cafes and pubs. On one corner, a theater showed "The Quiet American," a film based on Graham Greene's Vietnam-era novel. On another corner, a chunk of the bus sat in a yard, blown free of the scorched vehicle, a macabre remnant of the day's tragedy. "I didn't feel anything. I didn't hear anything," said Damouni, his eyes red and his ears still ringing from the blast. "I opened my eyes after a minute and saw blood all over my arms."

What about the innocent Israeli who are suffering under continued attacks by these crazies? Is it the IDF's duty to protect the Palestiian civilians or to make sure that Israelis are not used as target practice for rocket launchers? Surely those very same rocket launchers are aware that their actions are liable to harm the very people they are claiming to fight for? You plea for the safety of Palestinians (and I really do sympathise with the ordinary woman/child in the street) should be directed at those rocket launchers and those who send them on these missions. And a for the infrastructure - a lot of the damage was caused by the Palestinians themselves.

I know that you and this chap Ron are saying the same sort of thing, but somehow, his phrasing ?tear into the Gaza infrastructre?, ?cut off supplies? strikes an extremely harsh note, advocating that Israel behave in an inhumane manner. I would like to see Israel deal with the problem in a way that might promote peace, not further endless bloodshed on both sides. You know a lot about history, you know what happened years ago when an enemy laid siege to a town..as always, the first to suffer were always the innocent. Would 20-50lbs of high explosive be the same as the hellfire missiles that Israel uses? Would it be like, perhaps, about ten hand grenades going off at once? You know you don?t supply more links that I can handle, you give me one then tell me to google it! However, yes, of course I know well that you don?t bluff, as you put it, so please send me at least one that you think relevant of the destruction of the infrastructure inside Israel. Don?t accuse me of ignoring what?s happened to the Jews?you well know that I don?t tell you lies, either. I do support Palestinian rights, but I always keep saying, too much blood is being shed on both sides, there has got to be a peaceful solution. The Palestinians are the underdog right now, and the English always side with the underdog?.this does not mean I don?t care about the Israelis. Please send me what you think is a good demonstration of what you are talking about. Lastly, Ben?and you are not going to like this?I read in another Talkback your posts to Dutch, ?Doris Magelin?, saying that you look forward to her/his obits and laying wreaths on her/his remains, and to ?Rachel Corrie?, your bulldozer awaits?Ben, even for you, that?s going a bit far, or is it that I just don?t realise or understand the depth of your dislike for people who don?t support Israel? Well?such being the case, I can only hope you don?t go to that Talkback soon, because you are really going to let me have it good and proper over what I said about the IAF shooting hellfire missiles?OMG! Why ever did I write it! Please ignore it! Regards

Ron ins't saying anything I hadn't advocated some time ago...When the enemy in Gaza insists on firing rockets into Israel, which damage the Israeli infranstructure and it's civilian residents, it's a state of war. Siege should be imposed...The Gazan's are making the innocents of Israel suffer. Turnabout is fair play...Israel can tackle the problem in a different way once the rockets cease...Each of those rockets carry a payload of anywhere from 20-50 lbs. of high explosive...I've also seen the picture of the death and destruction that the homicide bombers have rendered inside Israel...If you wish, I'll supply you with the links...You well know, that I don't bluff...Ask and you shall receive more links than you really would want to handle...Your concerns are obviously with the Arab side, ignoring what's been done to the Jews...

"High time for Israel to cut supplies to Gaza and tear into the infrastructure" There's a nice balanced point of view. Not much in the way of supplies gets into Gaza these days anyway, and have you seen pictures of the infratructure of Gaza? The entire place is a chaotic shambles. In taking your advice, Israel would only be making the innocent in Gaza suffer more. Let us hope Israel can tackle the problem in a different way.

There not much chance of that happening. The world knows what they are and has given up on them. Even the more pragmatic Palestinians want no part of Hamas and their Iranian masters. They will end up burying themselves, unless they continue with their customary stupidity, in which case Israel will help them along.

These people deserve nothing. Hamas is begging for food at the UN yet they continue to fly Quassams at Israel. Give these Hamas Militants Nothing. What is already happening is peace talks are working around Hamas. Everyone is working around Hamas. What will happen is in the end they will be but a footnote in History books.

I have nephews and nieces living in Ashkelon. I worry about them, sure. Still, I think the qassems damage Hamas more than Ashkelon's quietly growing neighborhoods. Keep marginalizing yourselves, Hamas. While the peace train is running you over.

When will the Israeli government once and for all answer these Qassam terror attacks. I just dont understand what is going on in the IDF. Now that Gaza is run by Hamas, its a mostly terrorist population or a population that support hamas terror. When will the answer to Qassam attacks come?
