The article quotes the IDF as saying the three Palestinians were plotting a terrorist attack. Perhaps they were, we don't have the info. One has to at least wonder, given the Israeli assumption that ANY Palestinian is a terrorist sight unseen (even infants apparently), whethef or not the IDF accessment of motives was correct. If correct, what role were the other individuals to play in this "attack" one wonders. Did they bring the Russian women and Sudanese refugees along for the ride?

I am an American citizen, and if I attempted to cross the open border returning from Canada, or the unguarded portions of the Mexican border, or came onto a US beach on a small boat, and a Customs or Border Patrol or Coast Guard Official asked me for my papers, and instead of showing them I ran, and they yelled halt and I continued to run, I would very naturally expect the next sound I heard to be of small arms fire.

I travel back and forth to the USA. When travelling by car I am requested to show identity at the border crossing. If for some reason I was to try to run into the USA without approval the border guards have the right to fire at me. This is the same at all international borders where you are requested to show papers prior to entry. If this guy ran then he had something to hide.

I happen to know lots about policy and I also know that lots of people who live here weren't born here (including myself) and that many of them came as refugees. That does not negate the fact that there is a process for seeking and achieving refugee status in Canada, and the federal govt acts to enforce it. And as you're a student of policy, you will know better than to read this sort of statement in such an utterly superficial way. Nowhere does it say that absolutely anyone can waltz across any Canadian border at any time and Canada will welcome them with open arms so long as they say they're a refugee. Also, have a look back at the previous poster who informed you that there are many refugees and their descendants in Israel, and refugees continue to be admitted. Again, that does not mean Israel is not allowed to have what all other countries have: a process for screening and admitting refugees. It seems to me you simply wish to think ill of it.

Religious freedom includes respect for other people's religious practices. How sad it is that you all sit comfortably at home and debate the validity of a refugee's attempt to escape the horrors of his native country while that man lies dead at the hands of the murderous IDF...That Sudanese man surely didn't risk his own life simply because he was lazy and wanted to leech of Israelis. Many Egyptions and Sudanese cross into Israel in their way to the PA areas where they would be satisfied with the lower wages there ... because it is still jobs which pay, and it is higher than in their countries. Those are hard working people who would accept jobs anywhere. I urge you to research the origins on the black population of Jericho, who are mostly of Sudanese origins. Those people were welcomed by the palestinian natives. This is a case similar to Latin Americans who cross through central america and Mexico to seek work in the US and all the way north to Canada.

Everybody else is welcome to visit any time and enjoy. Yes, there are jewish only swimming pools and airlines for Jews only; but so are religious places all over the world ... in a sense, Israel is one big religious place which G-D promised for the Jews.

Helen, if you come on a tourist visa as indicated by an earlier post, to stay at property you own, you will be questioned on your intent to live there, and will be sent back to where you came from. Israel and Israelis are full of lies and misrepresentation..... yes, you can get a visa, and yes you can buy a house at a settlement, but you will unlikely have both to enjoy at the same time ... People of the holyland understand jewish mentality. Try bethlehem instead, very friendly and cheaper. Additionally, non-jews in settlements are constantly harrased bu jews. For example, if it is Sabath and you try to drive through certain neighbourhoods, expect damage to your car ... thats living in Israel.

Christians can certainly buy a house in some Jewish villages if they are also Israeli citizens, and I know of one or two examples, but would not be sensible to try to buy property in an Orthodox religious community, where they would literally be fish out of water. They are good citizens and there is no problem with this. If they are practicing Christians obviously they would be most comfortable in the Arab Christian community, but I warn them strongly not to move into a PA village in the "West Bank" where the Muslims and now Hamas rule have made their lives very complicated - many indigineous Christians have left in recent years to make new lives overseas.

I think you are referring to the American christians who are staunch supporters of Israel and keep its balance sheet healthy. I don't believe Arab christians are allowed to buy houses in settlements. Isreal is home to numerous refugees who were persecuted throught the world whether Ethiopia, Morrocco, Iraq or the former Soviet Union Israel took them in and made the Isrealis and proud... My suggestion Elisabeth is if you care about refugeess from the world take them into your home.

egypt has a huge land mass, Africa is huge, and has plenty of room. illegals swamping and overrunning Israel in the hopes of being a further drain on a country that has enough problems already is just not going to happen. We are not america we don't need migrant slave labor, we have enough unemployed as is. This is a very small country our demographics are a matter of survival for a jewish state, if they want asylum they will get it if europe agrees to absorb them, they can use Israel as a transit point, but they cannot stay and we won't support them, our welfare state is dead and dying, we have nothing to offer these people and they should be made aware of this.

Before pouring out her cynicism, perhaps she should have considered (a) what were such a motley body of people doing trying to cross the border so near to where there was live fire in a quasi-war situation ? and (b) Sudan is a well-known base for Al Qaeda opratives - who's to distinguish a refugee from a dangerous person (especially when that person attempts to run away on being challenged - refugees would surely run TOWARDS the putative safety they were seeking).
