IDF kills 8 militants in Gaza, including Jihad commander

Jihad commander charged with Qassam and bomb manufacturing; troops kill PA negotiator's bodyguard in Ramallah.

By Yuval Azoulay and Amos Harel Tags: Islamic Jihad Palestinians IDF

The Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security service killed at least eight Hamas and Islamic Jihad gunmen in three separate incidents in the Gaza Strip Thursday. Among the dead was the head of rocket and explosive manufacturing for Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

Mohammed Abdallah Abu Murshad was killed together with two other operatives when he was struck by Israel Air Force missiles while walking in a refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

In another incident, an IAF aircraft fired at a car containing a large quantity of munitions in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, killing two Islamic Jihad operatives. A security source said they were on their way to a terror attack.

Early Friday morning, IAF missiles killed a Hamas militant and injured five people near Khan Yunis.

Southern Command is gearing up for Qassam rocket fire from Islamic Jihad in response to the killings.

Also on Friday, Mu'tasem Sharif, 22, a member of the PA security forces, was killed by IDF troops outside his Ramallah home while trying to escape arrest.

Sharif was a bodyguard of the Palestinian Authority's chief negotiator Ahmed Qureia.

The IDF said that Sharif opened fire on soldiers during an arrest operation, and they responded in kind, killing him.

According to the IDF, Sharif was suspected of smuggling weapons to Fatah's military wing. Members of the PA's security force and Fatah have been involved of late in attempted or successful attacks on Israelis, including the murder of Kedumim resident Ido Zoldan earlier this month.

Thursday afternoon, three Hamas men were killed near Khan Yunis by fire from an IAF helicopter and an IDF unit on the ground after the militants fired an antitank missile at an IDF bulldozer. Shortly before the incident, a video was broadcast that showed an antitank missile fired at an IDF helicopter gunship. Military sources said the pilots had not noticed the missile, but the video footage would be scrutinized.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak has recently expressed satisfaction with the security forces' operations against terror organizations in the Gaza Strip. The defense establishment believes that the military and economic pressure on Hamas could lead the organization to ask for a cease-fire and pledge to halt rocket fire by smaller factions.

In the West Bank, an undercover Border Police unit raided the home of Samer Saadi, a wanted senior member of Islamic Jihad, and arrested him. IDF forces also arrested about 20 other wanted men yesterday in several West Bank cities.

Yoav Stern adds:

The Palestinian news agency Maan reported Thursday that Defense Minister Ehud Barak's visit to Cairo thawed the frozen talks over the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. According to the report, Egypt managed to bring about more flexibility in Israel's position.

Israel agreed to release 200 of the most senior Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit, Maan said, including organizational leaders and veteran prisoners. The report said the information came from "important sources," but gave no details as to their identity.

You said: "Over 30 killed, 41 wounded by Israeli forces since Dec. 13th. Of those killed, 10 were extrajudicially assassinated by Israeli forces in violation of international law" I take it you're not a student of international law. Every nation has the right to defend itself and take the necessary steps to fight and stop terrorism. Qassam rockets deliberately aimed at innocent civilians and schools is terrorism, in case you didn't know. Before you utter the term "international law" you should read up on it first: http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/terrorism/terrorism3a.htm

Over 30 killed, 41 wounded by Israeli forces since Dec. 13th. Of those killed, 10 were extrajudicially assassinated by Israeli forces in violation of international law. Eight of those killed in the two week period were killed during an Israeli invasion of al-Musaddar village in the central Gaza Strip. In addition, Israeli forces razed 133 dunums of Palestinian agricultural land, and demolished ten homes. The Israeli military conducted 24 incursions into Palestinian areas in the West Bank, and took over a number of Palestinian homes to turn them into military posts. During those incursions, Israeli forces arrested 87 Palestinian civilians, including 2 children, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, 2 members of the municipal council of Nablus and 3 university professors. Thus, the number of Palestinians arrested by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the beginning of this year has mounted to 2,640.

This is a classic case of "You Jews should know better...look at what we did to you in Europe". And you are right in one sense. For 2000 years, when attacked, we would not respond because it would only "make it worse". Clearly that worked out. Though you are right that an Israeli reaction will not end attacks, you are wrong that it is pointless. All combatants think in terms of consequences. Imagine if there were no consequences to a rocket attack on Israel. Do you think they would stop then? Certainly not. If this were the case, they never would have fired in the first place. The only thing that limits the number of rocket attacks is the knowledge that there will be a response. To say that this will cause more attacks is ridiculous. If robbery were not a crime, everyone would be a thief. I'm not even going to dignify with a response your notion that killing a terrorist is some kind of inhumane slaughter.

No. Was there a state called Israel? Yes ! Case closed. if you give up violence, then we can talk. Dutch, POOP, et al are here like clockwork, spewing their usual bs about how Israel is murdering poor civilians. Hopefully, sane, educated people will be reading this as well and see that in fact what is really happening, is that Israel is defending itself from Palestinian cowards (Hamas/Islamic Jihad, etc.) who fire rockets from civilian areas, into civilian areas. These groups are firing indescriminately at Israeli civilians, and that simply isn't acceptable. The attacks on these terrorists (the poor innocent civilians as Dutch, POOP, Clickfool, etc. call them) are a RESULT of their attacks on civilians. Not the other way around. I think we need to keep hammering that point home, because these folks' hatred prevents them from admiting that.

The problem Israel faces is that its enemies, without consequence, fight using means that are illegal under International Law. In other words International Law has failed Israel, in this context International Law must be compelled to change if it can't adequately protect innocent Israeli citizens.

Good work IDF, keep going, kill as many hamas and jihad and plo as you can.Barak and ashkenazi- I have a solution to kassems--here is what you consider: produce israeli-style kassems on remote. Arrange them in southern israel-give a warning to gaza. Then if they fire, israel should fire them by remote and direct them at gaza civilians to create terror wave. If israelis suffer, so must gazans suffer- missile for missile. i direct this to barak and idf, because Olmert is gutless and would never consider this technique. IDF should do this. Remember the soviets would not have defeated the nazis unless they crushed the german civilians. You cannot defeat hamas unless you hurt gaza civilians. Hamas derrives their support from civilians. Its time to hurt the gaza civilians.

    • Dan

    • 00:10

I am ashamed that you live among the Dutch. I feel sorry for them. I am ashamed that Israel is not doing enough to protect the human rights of innocent civilians, men, women and children, living in Israel (see Chechnya, NATO-Kosovo war, Tibet, Dresden as examples of what countries do to their neighbouring countries) I am ashamed that a terrorist entity has risen in Gaza after Israel left in good will. I am ashamed that extreme zealots create an environment of hate and terror that produces mass murderers that make bombs and rockets and aim them at innocent civilians living in Israel. Indeed, this in not 1948 anymore. Israel is a fact whether you like it or not. Israel will defend itself. If you don`t like this reality, move to another planet.

Get ready. Here comes Clickfool, Indrajaya, Dutch, Silvienne, and the enigma who goes by POP. Read theur comments. Read how Israel is evil. Read how Israel killed defenseless innnocent Palestinians. Indeed, if Israel killed innocent Palestinian civilians, it would be 100% evil. Even if the terrorist thugs hide with the civilians, it is painful if innocent civilians-Jews or Arabs or anyone-is hurt or killed. However, an impartial person sees Islamic Jihad and Hamas as murderers in a suicide cult mentality. They must attack Israel. If there would be no border fence, they would go into Israel proper and slaughter the Jews-like in the good old days. Stop shooting guns and missles at Jews. Give negotiations a chance. If not, it appears that Israel is not going to tolerate one more bullet into it's pre 1967 territory without a response. Israel should withdraw to 1948 borders? Fine, let's talk and negotiate. OK clowns, bring the venom!

They have their dignity and sovereign rights and Human Rightsas a people too and they will succeed against the murderers in the IDF & IAF & the fanatical settlers who illegally popu- late with their friends around the world.
