IDF: Gaza militants fired new kind of rocket at Israel

Defense source identifies rocket launched at Negev earlier Sunday as S5K, weapon less precise than Qassam.

The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday identified a rocket fired at Israel earlier in the day by militants in the Gaza Strip as a Russian-made S5K, the type used in battle in Iraw and Afghanistan.

According to the IDF, the rocket fired at Kibbutz Alumim in the Negev marked the first time militants in Gaza have used this type of weapon.

Although this type is intended to be launched aerially, said the IDF, Gaza militants on Sunday chose to launch their rocket from on-the-ground.

Unlike a Qassam rocket, the S5K contains more explosives, but is less precise.

A defense official told Army Radio on Sunday that the use of the new weapons proved suspicions of arms smuggling into the Gaza Strip was continuing despite Egyptian and Israel efforts to stymie it.

Can make the difference. It's not for the love of peace that Hamas are trying to stop the IDF from showing up for another visit. Israel has learned a lot from the Gaza war and if there is another one, it will be much shorter. By now, Israel has been known for not talking about nor demonstrating its capability. Even Mark Lincoln has no clue about it...Sorry Mark...

M.L.:"Bibi probably does not understand the particular threat to Armor from using the S5K as a high angle weapon." Do you really believe that Mark Lincoln? Bibi gets daily briefings from highly qualified military personnel drawing upon the enormous resources of the IDF... but Mark Lincoln knows something that they all don't. Stop gazing in the mirror Mark. Compared to Bibi, you know nothing.

As Hezbollah and Hamas rearm with improved weaponry the question becomes- will they make the next move to fire them regularly. As the story informs us , is the 1st one fired last week just a wake up call to the IDF. Any move by Hamas or Hezbollah will bring a swift "ecalated" response by the IDF. Do they ( H & H ) want to do this or do they just want to have boasting rights.

These real danger of these HEAT-Rockets are yet not told. They are industrial made, uniform, ingnited via electric circuits, not heavy and will penetrate 130mm RHA. So a common roof or even an saferoom that protects against a Qassam and most mortars will not help against them. And there will not be lots of failures at start or even "workaccidents" because they are designed to start without damaging from a million dollar jet or helicopter. That they have a small signature and produce just small amounts of smoke make them even less detectable. Shoot by wire also allows for easy remote control. Just saying.

Use of the S5K as a high angle weapon

Bibi probably does not understand the particular threat to Armor from using the S5K as a high angle weapon. Using it as the Palestinians did would result in the HEAT warhead impacting the top armor of vehicles which is normally much thiner than the armor on the front and sides. The Merkava is well protected against HEAT rounds from the fronts and sides, but may be much more vulnerable from the top. Israeli Self-Propelled Guns and Armored Personnel Carriers are quite vulnerable from the top. Bibi might consider this threat minimal but we will have to wait and see how many the Pals have, and how adept they are at using them. I am sure that there are those in the IDF concerned with the appearance of a new capability which represents a new vector of attack on IDF vehicles.

You mean like the kind of drones that Israel sold to Russia? You know, the ones designed and built in Israel? Hmmmm. Also, you may want to read up on where the US gets its military (and non) technology. You may be slightly surprised. Incidentally I'd say the 'gifts' of google, instant messaging and SIM cards alone are worth quite a lot of money on the open market...

'The import of S5Ks appearing is that they give Gaza a longer ranged anti-Tank capability than the RPG.' And in turn, one wonders if that's why one got fired at Israel. It's not that there's about to be deluge of S5K's -- it's that Hamas wants the IDF to think about it before they rerun 'Cast Lead.'

"Although this type is intended to be launched aerially, said the IDF, Gaza militants on Sunday chose to launch their rocket from on-the-ground" Give me a break. "Chose to launch from on-the-ground". How else would the rocket have been launched? From their non-existant drones or warplanes in their non-existant airforce? Quite unlike the warplanes and drones the IDF uses to launch USA made bombs and rockets at the Gazans almost daily.

Thank You Mark Lincoln. I knew that you would be here explaining exactly what an S5K rocket is. Another level of expertise from you and just to think that for the last few days you have been constantly posting your expert knowledge on the Iran nuclear program.Where do you get the time. I no longer use Wikepdia. I just go to my big book of Mark Lincoln and everything is explained there. Its funny that so many posts never see the light of day but you there is aways at least a couple of ML posts on every subject everyday. Most likely this one will also be "lost" somewhere. Haretz certainly does not want to lose the services of its "Resident Expert".

Yes, because that totally wouldn't bring a weapons embargo on Israel. I know Chechnya has been pushed under the rug in the United States, however. What you're suggesting is exactly what the Russians did in 1994. If you take 10 seconds to Google Grozny you'll understand why they lost that war.

    • 22:15

The S5 family of Folding Fin Aircraft Rockets come with a variety of warhead types. The S5K has a High Explosive Anti-Tank warhead. The S5KO has a combined HEAT and fragmentation warhead. The Quassam is quite imprecise and the comments upon the much shorter ranged S5K being less accurate is essentially twaddle. The import of S5Ks appearing is that they give Gaza a longer ranged anti-Tank capability than the RPG.

Will it really take an israeli death for the govt to respond harshly to each and every rocket attack? Take down buildings in central gaza for each rocket attack. See what runs out first, the rockets or the number of standing buildings. Everyone in gaza should be warned that building will come down. It will be up to them if they wish to stay in them or leave and fight hamas.
