IDF completes withdrawal from south Lebanon

Troops withdraw before onset of Yom Kippur; Army to remain in Maghar to mend breach in fence.

By Haaretz Service and Eli Ashkenazi AP

Israel withdrew the last of its troops from Lebanon early Sunday, the army said, fulfilling a key condition of the UN cease-fire that ended a monthlong war with Hezbollah guerrillas.

Military officials said the last soldier exited Lebanon just after 2:30 a.m. (0030 GMT).

On Saturday, Lebanese officials, who declined to be identified, said the commander of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon Major General Alain Pellegrini had informed Prime Minister Fouad Siniora that Israel planned to complete its withdrawal.

"We have to wait and see if the Israelis will stick to their word this time," one official said. "We've had similar promises in the past that did not materialize."

Alexander Ivanko, spokesman for the UNIFIL force, said he had no comment on the matter.

The IDF spokesman's office declined to comment on the planned withdrawal, citing security concerns. But earlier Saturday, a Lebanese government official said the UN peacekeeping mission had informed Lebanon that the withdrawal would be complete by Sunday.

Military sources said IDF forces will, however, remain in the Lebanese part of the village of Maghar, which straddles both sides of the border, until a breach in the security fence is mended.

They said the army will pullout as soon as the barrier is fixed and adequate security measures have been agreed on with UN observers.

The UN resolution that opened the way for a cease-fire ending more than a month of fighting August 14 calls on Israel to withdraw from Lebanon, but does not specify a deadline.

Israeli military officials said Thursday that the pullout would most likely come after the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur on Monday.

Israeli officials have been reluctant to withdraw the last of their troops, now thought to number several thousand after peaking around 30,000 at the end of the 34-day war with Hezbollah which began July 12. They cited disagreements over the deployment of Lebanese and UN forces in southern Lebanon, which has long been a stronghold of Hezbollah militants.

Some 10,000 Lebanese soldiers and more than 5,000 UN troops have been deployed in the south.

The UN resolution calls for 15,000 peacekeepers to work with an equal number of Lebanese soldiers to prevent another outbreak of fighting. It mandates a full Israeli pullout and requires the south be kept free of weapons except for arms approved by the Lebanese government.

When is a cease fire resolution not a cease fire resolution?. Simple. When kofi Annan puts it together with the UN. The lebanese , hiozbullah are not firing shots across the boirder, but they are not foloowing the sapirit and intent of the resolution. Hizbullah is re-arming, Lebanese government does nothing to stop Hizbullah re arming, wont permit any UN troops to interupt or interfere with Hizbullah, all the while halting the Israeli forces who again went after hizbullah after they went across the border again. So why bother, start the war back up. this time do it right

As a Lebanese-Canadian I have unique view of what is happening in Lebanon. The Lebanese people should rise agains Hezbollah. Siniora is the elected leader of the people and should act to assert his authority by doing what is best for Lebanon - disarming and abolishment of Hezbollah. Hezbollah only represents extremists among the Shiites, mostly the South. Many moderate Shiites, Maronites, Druze, Armenians hate Hezbollah and want it destroyed. They should unite and kick these Iranian agents out of Lebanon.

"IDF should stay in lebanon as liberator against" If that is the case, then make sure they have a fresh supply of body bags.... Lots of body bags. IDF does not have what it takes to win a battle against the couragous fighters of the Resistance. And if Nasrallah is ever harmed ( stupid suggestion by a fat, dumb and happy Ben Eliezer), then only use your imagination as to what would the results be.... "The gang who can't shoot straight" is an applicable term to the current israeli adminstration.

As usual the Mighty IDF is withdrawing from Lebanon because they know Hizballah will attack them eventually, so it is better they go back and hide in occupied Palastine. They proved they are no match for Hizballah, even with their NEOCON friends, Mr BOOOSH, the saudis, Mubarak, Shorty king abdallah, and their Lebanese dummies Mr. Horrible Hariri. Junballat. GAGA, and traitor Sineora. They can only dream that they can break down the resistance.

I expected them to at least be in legitimate hands (Lebanon army) right after the so called "cease fire". If the soldiers are not also home by Yom Kippur then Olmert is a capitulator. The Egyptians have given up on dealing with Hamas, so why are we still negotiating with them (via the Qataris?)

Rather than cry crocodile tears Fouad Siniora should fullfil his obligation to the Lebanese people by disarming Hezbollah and ensuring Lebanon is free of that scum. Lebanon deserves better than to be a puppet for Syrian and Iran. The Christians and Druze of Lebanon should unite with other moderates and demand disarming of Hezbollah by the UNIFIL and Lebanese Army. That's the only way to ensure peace in Lebanon. We don't need them to provoke another war.

So far the Lebanese and the UNIFIL forces have failed in their main duty - disarming Hezbollah. If they continue to ignore their responsiblity Israel has every right to ensure its safety by going after Hezbollah terrorists everywhere, from Sidon to Tyre and from Beirut to Bekaa.

This was clear to everyone the day the so-called “cease-fire” was declared. What else would you expect from the French? And who is to blame? All those who were fool(ed) enough to elect Olmert and his troika into power. The government is silent about its disastrous failures and in this respect Olmert is an ally of Nazrullah who is hiding his failures, too. Two comrades united in big flops. It appears that Nazrullah cannot be dismissed. But Olmert CAN, it is up to you to do it!

NO military storehouse in the world is unguarded except a border Kibbutz in Israel. They just walked in and made off with several TRUCKLOADS of weapons. Given Israels very tight security DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT HAPPENED? If it did, Who lost their job over it? The French tanks stopped them because there was NO reason for 4 Israeli tanks to enter deeper into Lebanon. NO discussion in Israel as to who was at fault in this matter because it never happened.

Israel cannot stay in Lebanon or THEY will be violating the cease fire! If you are so keen on implementing UN resolutions, petition your govt to implement 242 and 338. Set an example on resolution implementation. The IDF should stay in Lebanon? The IDF is BARELY over the border and serves NO useful military purpose for them to stay in Lebanon. AND you can avoid another embarassing military "backdown" with the French.

I never thought I'd ever find myself agreeing with the Syrians but they were right to take over that puny pathetic Lebanese nation after that 15 year needless and pointless civil war. Lebanon obviously can't take care of themselves - they're either killing each other in civil wars or allowing foreign (in the latest case Iranian) proxy militias to fight their own wars using Lebanon as their battlefield, while the Lebanese government and army stand there picking their butts, doing nothing!! They always scream and cry about Israel's invasion in 1982 but that was because Lebanon allowed the PLO to carry out terrorist attacks from their territory! If they would have thrown the PLO out like Jordan did, Israel never would have invaded. Lebanese cowardice in allowing the PLO and then hezzy to operate in their country is the cause of all their problems. They won't admit it though. Syria should put Lebanon out of its misery and take it over.

Lebanon likes to blame others for their woes
    • Dave
    • 30.09.06
    • 16:24

The only reason for this war was because the woosy Lebanese allowed Iran's proxy militia terrorists free reign in the south while the Lebanese army followed hezzy's orders and stayed out. In fact, now that Lebanese troops are FINALLY in the south of THEIR OWN COUNTRY, it's the first time since the 80's!! That's like someone renting out part of their house to someone and letting that person make all the household decisions!! But of course the Lebanese stick their heads in the sand and blame Israel for everything. But it's human nature not to blame yourself. Earlier the pathetic Lebanese fought some useless civil war for 15 years after which they allow the Syrians to invade and run their country as if it was a Syrian province! They scream and cry they were powerless to throw the Syrians out but we all saw last year what a lie that was - after the Syrians assassinaed Hariri they DID in fact expel the Syians. Why didn't they do that 10 years ago? Lebanon is a pathetic joke of a country.

Iran-Syria-Hezbollah occupiers of lebanon who are using lebanon as a strategic area for terror war attrition against Israel to the detriment of incapable lebanese therefor dependant and not sovereign who consequently of that terror interference sees israel as ennemy rather than friendly usefull neighbor. IDF should stay in lebanon To make sure that UN 1701 is fully implemented to Israel satisfaction indirectly lebanese benefactor. So not to repeat the brush off of UN Annan 1559 or the brush off of leb gov't to UN 1701 as is now . Israel learnt from the past and this very recent past that leb gov't-hezbollah-unifil are all cooperating over and over to israel detriment that led to UN 1701 since UN 1559 was totaly rejected and not implemented. IDF should stay in lebanon Better chance for the soldiers to come back home To take down nassarallah no matter who dares to replaces him. The IDF redeployement to Israel borders at this juncture means a later war round deadlier to lebanon
