IDF colonel to settlers: Stop calling soldiers 'Nazis' at checkpoints

Soldiers said they were subject to insults when they asked settlers to undergo security checks.

Head of the Paratroopers' Batallion, Colonel Oren Niv, has demanded that residents of a West Bank settlement stop leveling insults at soldiers manning checkpoints on the green line, after receiving complaints that soldiers were called "Nazis" by settlers in Karnei Shomron after subjecting them to security screening.

Settlers from Karnei Shomron have to pass through the Eliyahu checkpoint in order to cross the green line into Israeli territory. Recently, they have been required to present an identification card to soldiers and in some cases, to agree to a security check of their vehicles.

Police say the new regulations follow a number of incidents in which residents of settlements in the area were stopped smuggling illegal workers into Israel.

In recent months, soldiers manning the checkpoint have complained to their commanding officers that they have been subject to insults from settlers when they ask them to submit to a security screening. In several incidents, soldiers said settlers called them "Nazis" and said they were "practicing selection" on them.

Colonel Niv told a meeting of Karnei Shomron local leaders that the insults are "harmful outbursts I do not accept." Local officials have stated that a clear message has been sent to residents that unacceptable behavior towards IDF soldiers will not be allowed.

Settlers have requested that soldiers at the checkpoints not require them to pass security exams, instead saying that the residence sticker affixed to their cars should suffice.

The IDF spokesperson said Monday that "security screenings at checkpoints in the central command district are carried out in light of the security situation, and in order to prevent terror attacks and the smuggling of unapproved people.

"CJ You have plenty of freedom of speech in an Israeli forum" Yes indeed, PETER SM of Melbourne, Australia, I didn't question whether there was freedom of speech in Israel. "published in Israel and repeated as often as you seem to wnat to do so." Yes indeed, PETER SM of Melbourne, Australia. "talk about biting the hand that feeds you" Strange, donations in support of Israeli charities feed Israelis.

But if someone outside Israel calls the IDF Nazis..... "There isnt free speech in Israel or anywhere else, what are you dreaming?" See above and do try to comprehend what is said. It's not that hard.

mentally ill and indoctrinated to the point of insanity. They are going to yell, holler, cy, whine, abuse, and demolish anything that doesn't agree with their twisted beliefs. They aren't just a barrier to Israeli progress, they are a sad example of how much more humans need to evolve and how poisonous religion really is They truly believe they are better than anybody else on earth and some fairytale entity told them so in an old history book..so it must be true right? it never fails to amaze me how toxic religion is, and nobody wants to get to the root of it and say hey! wake up in their! It is modern day, you can become enlightened and free of your restrictive bigoted ways. but they are so indoctrinated I a afraid its terminal. No one will help the because they have fredo of religion....ya ever hear of freedom FROM religion. these people have been fed and groomed since before their birth to carry out some fantasy biblical recreation on Israel. it's insanity is what it is

I respect that you object to the behavior of these settlers, which to my mind puts you in a different class from them. But you are still living illegally on Palestinian land, flying the Israeli flag. A clear violation of international law.

"There is no freedom of speech in Israel?" - Eli Colonel Niv did not have his soldiers beat the Settlers, nor were they arrested. Indeed, he only asked politely that the Settlers be as polite with the IDF at the checkpoint as he was towards the Settlers. I would say the right of 'free speech' is alive and well in Israel. What we have is a question of 'the right to incivility.' The IDF kids are not there for laughs. They are there to secure the border of the nation against illegal crossings and possible terrorist activity. Free speech is one thing, and hate speech is another. The IDF soldiers cannot be rude, and should not be treated rudely. That is all the Colonel asked. Was it too much to ask?

Those who view themselves as free men resent being stopped and asked for their papers, or to be inspected. I understand the response, though those simple acts at a check point hardly qualify as 'Nazi.' And I can understand the resentment of the IDF kids who are already inconvenienced to have the duty. Doing a thankless task for the unwilling is something almost anyone would rather not do. But there is something else at work I feel. That is the attitudes of the Settlers whom see themselves as superior and what may be a growing resentment by Israelis who suffer embarrassment and inconvenience as a result of that arrogance. It is the Settlers who make the checkpoint necessary. And it is they who feel they should be without inconvenience for the sake of the safety of Israelis. Perhaps the wise thing for Israel would be to close the checkpoint, thus eliminating the 'nazi' behavior which so annoys the Settlers, while making Israel safer, and letting the IDF do something less annoying.

These people don't serve, support or have any substantial investment in Israel. They are a crippling wound in the arm Israel uses to defend herself and an ugly scar on her face to present to the international community. Let Israel direct her soldiers to a more worthy cause.

Can Pals call IDF Nazis to their face then?
    • Michael

Here's the IDF Colonel politely asking the settlers to stop calling his men Nazis. What is he, a man or a mouse? I've worked in war zones and spent time at checkpoints. If I'd have called the soldiers there Nazis, for doing their job, I could have expected to be delayed for many hours, while the soldiers did everythiing they could possibly think of to delay me, or alternatively they might just have decided to hit me, or tear up my papers, or something friendly like that. I'm gussing that's the kind of treatment Pals would get if they called IDF soldiers at a checkpoint Nazis to their face. So who's in charge in the West Bank? The IDF or the settlers? Well I guess we all know the answer to that one.

Amazing that settlers call the IDF Nazis, when the term reality should only be applied to how the Palestinian population is treated in relation to their oppressive occupiers. The settlers are not oppressed, nor are they victims. They are the ones who victimize others along with the Israeli army who seem to know no bounds to their cruelty.

Ok let me see now. I pay all of my Israeli taxes, have an Israeli Jerusalem ID but am stopped/checked at every checkpoint. I also have to pull my trousers down at Ben Gurion airport security checks every time I fly outside this country. With all of the above I would find it very hard to call an Israeli soldier a Nazi. So please dont blame me if I think all of this " settlement freeze" is bull .... since there is no way they- the far right and settlers all in one bag- will stop the settlements. What a disaster the Israeli society is falling into. All of this hatred . Where does it come from??
