IDF Chief of Staff: All options on Iran should remain open

Ashkenazi spoke at Friends of IDF dinner; Protestors outside held signs condemning 'Israeli war crimes.'

By Natasha Mozgovaya and Reuters Tags: Gabi Ashkenazi Iran nuclear Israel news

Gabi Ashkenazi said on Tuesday that Iran was the main threat to world peace and all options should remain on the table for stopping their nuclear program.

The Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff spoke at a dinner hosted by the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces in New York City, while hundreds of protestors marched outside.

Ashkenazi described how Iran was "attempting to harvest regional instability through its proxies: Hezbollah, Hamas and other terrorist organizations."

"Therefore the international community must stop the Iranian nuclear program for its own sake, while all options should remain on the table," Ashkenazi said.

The dinner was held at New York's Waldorf Hotel, where protesters organized by 25 groups - including peace and justice organizations, churches, Jewish groups, Palestinian solidarity groups and women's groups - stoop outside holding signs that read: "Israel War Criminals Feast at the Waldorf," "U.S. Dollars Out of Israel," and "Obama, End Your Silence."

In November, an Israeli official said Ashkenazi told a parliamentary panel that Israel was readying all options to try to force Iran to halt its nuclear program and had suggested diplomatic or economic sanctions may also help.

During a visit to Israel on Tuesday, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said the United States was working with many countries to convince Tehran through diplomacy that it should not acquire nuclear weapons. But world powers are mindful of Israel's threats to attack its enemy pre-emptively as a last resort.

Israel, believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear power, has called for sanctions to cripple Iran's trade in oil and gas. Iran says its nuclear program is solely for power generation, denying accusations that it is seeking to develop a nuclear weapon.

The mighty Iranian Revolutionary Guards with the funny caps for all their boisterous bravado have not sent even one commando team with their proud home-made weapons across Israel's borders to humble the infidel Zionists and erase them from the pages of history for all their alleged violations against the Palestinians because the IDF would make kebab out of their backsides and the self-appointed Caliphate Corps would be humbled instead. You have no clue how much the Persians despise the lower class Arabs but they'll use them as proxy toilet paper to further their designs on the middle east and beyond. Yes, Iran has produced and positioned thousands of rockets and weapons at home and abroad aimed at Israel and is ready to give the command for unleashing them in waves and large parts of Israeli cities and infrastructure are still vulnerable to their attack even with some of the countermeasures in place. But Israel's pre-emptive measures and subsequent strikes will prevail against all.

They should let him talk strategy with somebody, a Second Lieutenant, maybe, just back from Afghanistan and then send him home.

so stop smoking the naughty stuff and be realistic, in a clash with Hezzbollah and Syria Israel will respond much harsher Egypt and Jordan will not mobilise after anulling a peace treaty, Iran joining the party is the perfect reason to attack it similtanously. BTW: Israel stated clearly it has no intention of any attack on its Northern neighbours unless they themselves attack Israel first, Iran joining in would invite trouble for themselves as Israel certainly wont be the agressor in such a scenairo. get a grip with reality.

The IDF is a defense force that will occasionally appear to go on the offensive and in the case of the bully Iran which has been pushing Israel around with proxies for decades to bloody it, little David is about to rightfully and in defense, turn around and crack the sponsor Goliath squarely in his Busher-profile nose. You don't have a clue what Israel was prepared to immediately do to Iraq when Saddam's scuds hit Tel-Aviv years back. Time to crawl out of your cradle and grow up to be the man you claim you are!

the tens of millions of dollars in non-petroleum exports Iran has each year. the reaction from environmentalists to such an action. the number of non-NATO countries with the ability to fairly quickly rebuild the Iranian oil infrastructure. and the likely embargo by OPEC of exports to any country that did not take steps to punish those responsible for such an act (Saddam had attacked two OPEC members, and the US didn't go after the oil wells, so that wasn't a precedent)

and the US (and maybe Britain and France) would have to decide if protecting Israel from the world's reaction for a week would be worth seeing the end of their special powers at the UN. The other likely outcome will be the end of Iran basically staying at home. Imagine how the balance of power equations would work out if there was an Iranian military base in Lebanon, complete with air defence systems, fighter aircraft, and maybe a stockpile of guided missiles, anti-armour weapons, and anti-drone missiles, all available to the Lebanese armed forces (both branches) should they feel the need to use them?

Recent wars have been contained military clashes in open field and airspace. Major population centres have been spared with exception of Beirut. That is due to change through massive stockpiling of missiles in the north. Consider the following scenario. An incident on the Lebanese border initiates a limited retaliation by Israel. Hezbollah escalates and hits back forcing Israel to retaliate with more force. Further escalation leads to missiles on IAF airfields, Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli reaction gets Syria involved that attacks Dimona nuclear facility. Settlers out of control blow up Al Aksa and the Dome of the Rock. Jordan and Egypt annul peace accord and mobilise. Iran attacks Israel, US attacks Iran, China starts shooting down US military satellites and paralyses operations by cyber attack. The world witnesses the second hostile nuclear event, etc. etc. Everyone looses, very similar to Europe 1914 but with more fire power. Does anyone think this madness can be stopped?

Simple answer. Israel provided the intelligence which stated that Saddam Hussein was in the process of producing weapons of mass destruction to give to Al Qaeda. Obviously this intelligence had nothing to do with the fact that Saddam Hussein was sponsoring young Palestinians to strap explosives to themselves to the tune of $25,000, a house and a car a pop, thus ensuring their families future.. Which Israel could do nothing about. So the Iraq intelligence was dreamed up, to provide the atmosphere in the United States to facilitate an atmosphere conducive to an attack on Iraq. I hope that answers your question, whether you choose to believe it is of course completely up to you. Which is why the United States isn't buying further Israeli lies vis a vis Iran.

Askhenazi is desperately trying to put the issue of Iran on the front burner even though it is acknowledged that Palnet Earth is not going to and is in no position to fight another war on hbehalf of Israe. Which is shown by the fact that Israel is recieving aid to enable it to have a second strike capability to counter Iran achieving parity. Iran is going nuclear get used to it.

So I would suggest that the appropriate treatment for Ashkenazi would be to announce that the USA was stripping a cool $1Billion from its military aid package. What they fear most is a direct strike on their motherland that would disintegrate before their very eyes their proud nuclear setting and crown Caliphate jewels that they've been crafting and buffing to perfection and self-sufficiency for almost 30 years for the world to behold and admire. It would take many years to rebuild and that's without any subsequent strikes on their facilities. The colossal national shock of the strike and their expensive losses would be a hundred times the stunned impact that eye witnesses experienced back in June 7, 1981 when seeing waves of unknown warplanes coming in overhead for their bombing runs with ground-penetrating ordnance that reduced Saddam's phallic symbol to floating dust in mere minutes. Iran is doing all it can to huff up its proxies along Israel's borders to deter the IDF.
