IDF Chief: Israel will fight in Gaza again if needed
Hamas tells Red Cross: Israel planning another war in Gaza'; Palestinian militant killed by IDF at border.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Goldstone report Israel news Israel war crimesIsrael Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi said Friday that the army would not hesitate to respond if Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip continued to fire rockets at Israel.
"We are prepared to contend with the whole arc of threats," Ashkenazi told students during a visit to a Be'er Sheva high school, citing both the local defense situation as well as Iran's contentious nuclear program.
Although the Hamas rulers in Gaza have of late been "restraining themselves and others," said Ashkenazi, "we must not fool ourselves. If necessary, we will operate again in the Gaza Strip to stop the rocket fire."
In reference to the Goldstone Commission's damning report on Israel's conduct during the war on the Gaza Strip earlier this year, Ashkenazi emphasized that the IDF had the responsibility to defend itself at all costs.
"We must defend ourselves when we see a militant cell rigging Grad rockets in the direction of Be'er Sheva, and that is exactly what we did [during the January war]," the IDF chief said.
Reiterating his remarks to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee earlier this week, Ashkenazi said that the IDF was open to investigating all complaints of misconduct during the war.
"The Goldstone report deserves a response," he added. "We must explain the justice of that war and to explain that there is the possibility that we will be forced to act again."
Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, meanwhile, has warned that Israel is planning another offensive on the Gaza Strip, Iran's Press TV reported on Friday. The IDF chief did not respond directly to that report during his visit to the Be'er Sheva school.
According to Haniyeh, it is Israel and not Hamas that is intent on keeping the conflict going between the two sides.
Hamas is "not looking for more violence," Haniyeh told a group of Red Cross delegates visiting the Gaza Strip earlier this week.
The Hamas leader - who took over leadership of Gaza after a bloody 2007 coup deposed the Palestinian Authority in the coastal territory - told the delegates that he hoped his prediction of war would not come into fruition.
Haniyeh said that should such an Israeli offensive occur, Hamas would be prepared to retaliate.
"Our people will not surrender; they will fight back," Haniyah's office said, in a statement.
He also said he hoped that "the world will stop Israel from killing more children," according to the Iranian network.
Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces soldiers on Friday opened fire on a group of Palestinians apparently rigging explosives at the Gaza Strip border.
One of the Palestinians was killed in the incident. None of the soldiers was hurt.

if you have read the comments i left on this site, you wouldnt have sent ME such a note with a content i already knew. It wasnt ME who attacked you or Israel, to be more specific, it was the syrian government.
Hamas put their own civilians in the forefront, using them for shields, thus the result was civilian casualties We've been over this before, this time try retaining the information Surely you've paid some attention to what Mr.Hamad said in his video, saying they preferred death to life, and Hamas made certain they got their preferences
"A strong Israel is a vital asset to the free world and America" - B. Gold of Tel Aviv. As an Israeli I can understand your point of view. But lets think about this; how vital is Israel to the Free World, and how free is the Free World anyhow? I am not advocating the demise of Israel, but should Israel cease to exist in it's present form (such as a one-state with all Israeli's and Palestinians in one country for instance), how would this freedom be effected? Is it possible that the unwaivering support that Israel has from the US in terms of direct financial aid (both public and private), military aid, etc not have a negative effect on this concept of the Free World? Would the World not be a safer place for the rest of us if this unprecedented support were to cease?
The war has been over for over six months yet Israel still sdwill not allow the rebuilding of schools and hospitals. Not building materials is allowed in to Gaza. The world knows Israel is stealing the water belonging to the Palestinians and tried to blackmail them from pressing war crime charges. Do you winder the Palestinians fight for basic human rights.
'First we take Gaza, and then we take Iran' sounds as if Leonard Cohen is working for the IDF.
Since the Gazan's refused to live in peace and listen to reason, preferring to fire rockets into Israel They were warned, time and again, to cease and desist You forgot to mention that Gaza specifically targeted Israeli civilians, thereby denying themselves of immunity from retribution
They would then do the usual, smuggle in more arms in preference to food
Ducks aren't just sitting there, they're shooting, that's why they get shot at Government did talk, too much, which resulted in more shooting Next time the IDF will cooks the ducks goose
that Israel has probably learned a thing or two about how to conduct itself during the next Gaza war.
A strong Israel is a vital asset to the free world and America. To be a strong and dependable friend in a 'rough neighborhood', Israel must have defensible borders and military prowess capable of addressing multiple challenges which can materialize suddenly in this unstable region. The conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Israelis is not the only adversary Israel faces. Historically, anti-Zionism has been the glue behind Arab nationalism. It has provided a convenient scapegoat for deflecting Arab states' frustration over unsolved domestic problems, but it also stems from a deep innate intolerance that exists throughout the Muslim world to any non-Muslim presence. They're smuggling arms because they refused to live in peace It's the nature of the beast, it lives on hatred You really should look, and try to understand, the sequence of event, it was the Gazan's that attacked first and continued to attack Rest assured, if Israel has to go into Gaza again, there won't be enough left of Gaza to sweep up with a broom Don't worry, you won't get hurt, you'll be remote from the action, snug as a juke in crap
And Israel will defend itself against all enemies, including Hamas & Syria, which by the way attacked Israel in all wars instigated by the Arabs You may start with 1948 and work your way up to the present time Self-Defense, that's how we got the Golan, you attacked us again and again from your vantage point, which is no longer yours
Meanwhile in Gaza, the children can eat all the cake they want for lack of bread or rice or pasta.
"The Goldstone report deserves a response," he added. "We must explain the justice of that war and to explain that there is the possibility that we will be forced to act again." in other words, justice in our eyes is even if you don't kill anyone of us, sending rocekts is a legitmate right to kill you all. can the extremists say the same thing about jews?, can they argue that if jews are killing innocent pals then they have a right to kill innocent people?, like i've said before, this is becoming more and more dangerous for the world.
deserves a few more.
a man's got to do what a man's got to do.we're only human after all.
Wheres the news
"We are prepared to contend with the whole arc of threats," - Gabi Ashkenazi Translation: first we attack Gaza, then Lebanon, and then Iran.
Remember when Israel retreated from Lebanon? It didn't do so because of any benevolence - it did so because the occupation was costing too many lives (Israeli lives, of course - Lebanese lives are meaningless). If Israel reoccupies Gaza, be prepared for long casualty lists (Israeli, of course - Gazan lives are meaningless).
Even if what you said is true, about the error of leaving Gaza, a view that I agree with, I think Israel needed to give peace a chance. This was a risk worth taking but the risk, unfortunately, materialized. Hopefully, Israel will learn from her mistake.
Why are they smuggling arms? To defend themselves and to kill as many of their oppressors as possible when they are next attacked.
The only way Israel will go after Hamas is in self defence. As to phosphorous or anything else, it can be avoided through the simple expediency of not attacking Israel. So, in placing the moral blame on Israel, your full of it. Israel can and should defend itself, much more aggresively than it did last time. There was way to much effort made in protecting Pals, as if they are innocent and as if one can really distinguish between civilians and Pals and even when that can be done, as if anyone can operationalize this distinction in a self defence operation. I say we go after Pals much harder the next time and make them pay a real price in territory.
Killing in self defence is not dispicable. It is unfortunate but necessay and justifiable. Rockets aimed at a civilian population, bombs placed on the border, when Israelies have not engaged in any offensive activities, is despicable and leads inexhorably to violence.
Your full of poo. Provoke an incident? The only incident Israel provoked was the protest of some of its citizens when it withdrew from Gaza as what was clearly a futile attempt at a very significant good will gesture. Israel should make it clear that continued firing of rockets at its population will cost Hamas territory. Short of that, there is nothing that Hamas can lose of any value to it. Its women and children are merely martyrs waiting to be put on the alter.
poof, your heroes are gone.
It seems that hamas is itching for a fight, as is Hizbollah. Why else would Hamas be lobbing rockets into Israel(one this evening)on an average of twice a week, deliberately provoking the IDF to take some kind of retaliatory action? Why else would Hezbollah be making false accusations of the IDF's intention to invade Lebanon? If there was peace, what on earth would these terrorists have left in life?
"It`s time to end the insanity of Israeli retreat once and for all" Gonna stay in the West Bank with that feeble excuse, too?
"BUT Israel had to kill the terrorists and make them not want tp fight anymore" Israel didn't just kill the terrorists, and that's the problem. Too many Gaza civilians died.
Tells us why Egypt should allow Gazans in? All it would mean would be Israel grabs yet more land Palestinians & Israeli are closer in DNA than others. Gaza & West Bank are Israels problem & making.
"If Hamas does not want war,why are they smuggling arms?" If Israel does not want war,why are they buying arms? Be it Hamas or Hezbollah, they want / need weapons to defend against the attacks that will come from Israel.
You wrote: "Israel' s point of view is: any killing of people is despicable" but you failed to mention "except when done by Israelis". Killing 248 police cadets at their turning-out parade: have you any word but "despicable" for that?
Some people really are into fantasy... please don't delude yourself, this is not war, it's a masacre.
Israel has peace with Egypt even after giving up the Sinai. So it was a smart idea. The problem was that Palestinians should not have been permitted to let Hamas run.
Everyone in Israel feels terrible about the Gaza War. But what is Israel supposed to do when Hamas shoots rockets from School yards, UN refugee centers, rooftops of residential areas, apartment buildings, and backyards onto the innocent poor people of Sderot? Hamas was using ambulances to transport fighters...was using the basement of the Gaza Hospital as a military command center...It is terrible what happened to Gaza. Everyone in Israel feels bad. BUT Israel had to kill the terrorists and make them not want tp fight anymore. May we all love each other and live in peace. May we all recognize we are all created in God's image, and are all His unique and special creations. And may we all live in peace together forever.
And states don't enforce a rigid seige on other groups of people and expect peace, either...
One fact that we must always keep in mind about our seemingly neverending Gaza troubles is that they are 100% the result of our insane retreat from Gaza. We'd NEVER have to fight in Gaza had we stayed there. Our last Gaza war wouldn't have happened. Neither would we have another Gaza war looming. The same could truthfully be said about every single Israeli retreat. The results are always catastrophic. It's time to end the insanity of Israeli retreat once and for all.
"Shooting ducks" don't send rockets every day on "shooting ducks" & expect Peace !
Israel will fight everywhere if needed ! Do we have any choice !
destroy , it is in the fabric of that terrorism inclined world . They get all the support they need from "innocent civilians" . This is just the true cunning nature of that part of the world .
Shooting at sitting ducks is about as low as an army can stoop. Bargain basement victory. The government should be talking not shooting. Tell 'em that.
Ofcourse eventually rockets will fall again if Israel keeps insisting on a stringent boycot and near total closure of the border! Israel only uses the stick for Gaza, no carrot in sight!
Egypt, which can open its Gaza border to save Gazans any time, kept it closed during Cast Lead - not just that - they even forced back THOUSANDS of Gazans who broke through it. This is rather sick, rather insane. There is no comparison with Egypt's decades-long lock-out of Gazans to Israel's saving of almost a million Jews kicked out from Arab states, including Egypt. No moral equivalence here whatsoever. None at all. Egypt is huge, could have let Gazans in, can still, and help, can save and absorb Gazans even if Gazans attack Israel more and Israel counters again. But will they? Don't bet on it. Sadly, the death-worship cult is still just too entrenched in Hamas, Egypt and much of the gigantic Muslim world, which has no choice but to deny Jews validity in order to validate Islam. And sadly, the same can be said for many millions of Christians. So, the bored Marks of Maine try to excuse and defend this whacked, sick Israel-hatred. No surprise indeed.
Prepare yourselves for Massacre Cast Lead 11 ... I'm sure there must be something worse than white phosphorus to throw upon civilian populations ... Something the IDF must be thinking about .
said Menahem Begin, one of Israels great Zionists when Egypt made Peace. Hamas should listen to this, rather then to its own propaganda. Israel does not want war, en therefore is always prepared. as the saying goes: If you want Peace, gird for war as the Romans said it:" Si vis pacem, para bellum"Israels point of view is: any killing of people is despicable
Then why does Hamas continue to fire rockets and mortars into Israel? If they were truly peaceful, they would use that money to build their infrastructure instead of smuggle weapons in through tunnels and attack Israel.
the Pals are intent to destroy Israel down to their last woman and child What a 'society.'
This is not news either. The Israeli politicians problems will be how to provoke an incident to justify another attack. There are some buildings still standing in Gaza. Not everyone yet lives in a tent.
"... the report contains the clearest finding that Hamas and other militant Palestinian groups committed serious war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity. The acceptance of those findings by the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly has been ignored completely..." Richard Goldstone, Interviewed by Ha'aretz, Nov 13 2009
What Israel wants is solid borders between Gaza and Israel. Hamas has chosen the path of war and jihad and so let it be.... in Gaza. Entrance of hostiles into Israel is not a right. Egypt also has a border with Gaza, let them trade with them. We want a secure normal border fence between us and they will be left in peace to "build" their state on their own dime. We heard only the same words from Hezbollah only last week. They play together it seems. Hamas are no victims nor Hezbollah, their mantra is death and war in holy Islamic crusade style.
We know of the sick, immoral tactics of Hamas cowards. This will not help you this time.
Only with the destruction of Hamas will any chance of peace have a chance at existing. We all hope cast lead II starts soon and finishes with Hamas gone.
Hamas will fight and retaliate, first in line for propaganda reasons would be children then women and last but not least the so called fighters and their leaders will crawl into their bunkers so as to survive and cry foul, look how many children have died. If Hamas does not want war,why are they smuggling arms?
"We are telling you this so we can get our women and children ready for Human shields. We know you will back us again against Israel for war crimes at the UN,Amnesty Intl, Human Rights watch, the world Press et all are with us..."
If israeli occupation forces try again to invade Gaza Strip to uproot HAMAS , then every israeli invader will experience that our fighters have learned very well the lessons of the last invasion. Trying to uproot HAMAS can be compared to trying to uproot Islam-Belief from our minds and hearts.
Don't lie ICRC you know very well where Gilad Shalit is and what his situation is. How do you qualify as the Red Cross the world admires?
