IDF chief: Druze officers are this generation's Maccabees

Army head praises growing enlistment of Druze soldiers into IDF, urges Bedouin youth to follow suit.

By Jack Khoury and Haaretz Service Tags: Israel Druze Peki'in Gabi Ashkenazi

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi praised Druze officers Friday, comparing them to the ancient band of Jewish warriors who overthrew Greek rule in the Holy Land.

"The Druze officers are our generation's Maccabees," Ashkenazi said during a visit Friday to the Galilee village of Kfar Julis.

The chief of staff appeared in Kfar Julis to mark the Islamic Feast of the Sacrific, or Eid al-Adha. In light of the recent violent clashes between police and residents of the Druze town of Peki'in, Ashkenazi sought to emphasize and strengthen ties with the Druze community.

The IDF chief added that the rate of enlistment of Druze soldiers into the IDF - among the highest in the country - continues to climb.

Ashkenazi said that more than half of Druze enlistees serve in combat units, and ranking officers continue to take command of soldiers operating in vital areas.

Ashkenazi also paid a visit to Bedouin community leaders in Kfar Julis, during which he praised Bedouin soldiers, vowing that any Bedouin who enlists will receive every opportunity that is afforded to other soldiers.

Ashkenazi cited the importance of army service for young Bedouins as an entrance ticket into Israeli society.

On Sunday, both chief rabbis, Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar, will meet with Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Muafek Tarif in Kfar Julis. Metzger and Amar will proceed onto Peki'in following the meeting.

Have you noticed that they prefer to stay in Israel, with it's hospitals, running water, electric and schools rather than go to Egypt, when they had the chance--??--They and their flocks had the choice of going in any directions, their preferences are qutie clear--Better to live among the Jews than with their fellow Muslims, in filth and squalor--Military service in many countries is a prized form of employemnt and financial security--Great medical benefits too, for them and their families--

Many are missing the point here, the Bedouins are arabs and muslims, as such they must be classified under the "Islamofascism" as many like to describe the Arabs and muslims. Even if they sacrifice all their children for the state of Israel, they will never be Jews or live in the "Jewish state", they are being used for the dirty jobs in the occupied territories. Those poeple are nomadic, the state of israel, to limit their movements, established villages for them but did not recognise these villages to deprive them from their basic needs and to force them to send their children to the army to earn their food.

What a load of nonsense uttered here. Bedouins are condemned for their traditional way of life and the demolition of their homes and livelihoods justified by the state. This is the same state that encourages, funds and protects the settlers and openly steals Palestinian lands for them to live on. The bedouins serve the state loyally in order to be accepted while the settlers do all they can to avoid serving the state and blackmail it at every opportunity.

The Druse may be good soldiers, but if Israel is going to be a Jewish state, it will have to be Jewish soldiers who make it happen. Actually, there are many Jews who could be modern day Maccabees. They're often found on hilltops in Judea and Samaria trying to take possession of Eretz Israel for the Jewish people. But like the Maccabees of old, they'll first have to defeat the God-denying assimilationists before they can deal with the nation's foreign enemies.

You sort of have it bass ackwards--Bedouin set up "Illegal" villages--Those lands they occupied legally were theirs-- As in the U.S., eminent domain exists--Israel has the right to apply it, as necessary in the same manner the town you live in has--You can be evicted from your home, for the public good--

Sorry, I'm african-american, so it complicates your scenario a bit more. But to the point, Israel is a colonial entity founded in the wrong century, just as colonialism was on the way out as an acceptable way of doing things. If Israel had been founded 200 years ago, it would be no problem. Its problem is that its colonization displaced the locals and those locals fight back, and have much international support.

With tensions somewhat high because of the incident in Peking and visit of a Druze Knesset member to "enemy state" Syria, this is an important move by the state to heal rifts with its Druze citizens. Druze are overwhelmingly loyal and proud citizens of Israel, as shown outperforming their Jewish counterparts in enlisting. They find a creative and healthy way to balance their particular identity with integration into the Jewish majority society. If other Arabic-speaking Israeli citizens followed their lead- perhaps just by performing civilian national service for 2 years instead of military- they'd receive many benefits that the Druze do and be much better of in Israeli society.

" "unrecognized" villages. They have their lands stolen ("expropriated") The villages weren't recognized, "ILLEGAL" is what they are and were--You can't come along and build anyplace you feel like it, let us say in Manhattan--The authorities will stop you, and issue a "Cease & Desist Order", if you refuse to abide by the law, they'll dismantle it for you and charge you for the work--

first off dave, i lived in Israel and worked with bedouin guys who had the same dreams and opinions as Israelis, such as the joy of family and friends and were willing the fight for israel. they were just as disgusted by terror as i was and could not imagine what good could come from it. That being said if you knew anything about the IDF you would know that the best reacon and tracking units are either lead or trained by bedouins. As for some of their villages, the bedouin are a nomadic people some still choose to live by the old ways, if the Israelis relocated them so you wouldn't feel sorry for them i am sure another left wing nut would cry a foul!

When it's Bedouin land legally inhabited they have no problem--However, when the take other land that doesn't belong, that's where the rub lies-- As far as Bedouin being in the IDF, they have since the State was established--Noted for being army scout--The IDF realizes their value, and wants more volunteers-- David, it's a pity that you know so little about the Bedouin and the IDF--

IDF ashkenazi is doing a good job trying to ensure arab loyalty and service. On the topic, we have the smug lawyer olmert who considers himself to be so intelligent feels that he can take chances because of israel's military strength. Well, there can be no favourtism.get your son from france back to israel for military service. He has to do his duty. If Olmert feels this is unimportant, then he should leave the PM's office right away.

They live by choice and enjoy all the freedoms offered to all Israelis. The IDF is also a wonderful way to assimilate and opportunity for education and employment after their tour of duty. Open up that negative mind as it is not a very becoming feature in your personality.

Interesting - they want the Bedouin as Army fodder but treat them worse than dirt in their "unrecognized" villages. They have their lands stolen ("expropriated"), their fields poison-sprayed and their dwellings demolished over their heads - and for THAT they are to become loyal soldiers ??? David
