IAEA Chief: Direct talks are only solution to Iran nuke crisis
Western powers fear Iran wants nuclear weapons while Iran sticks to claim that nuclear program for electricity.
By Reuters Tags: UN Barack Obama Iran nuclear Israel newsDirect talks without preconditions between the United States and Iran are the only solution to the conflict over Tehran's nuclear program, the U.N. nuclear agency's head was quoted as saying on Saturday.
New sanctions against Iran would only aggravate the dispute rather than push it to give in to international demands, Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told Austrian daily Die Presse.
"Of course you can impose further sanctions. But I consider it rather unlikely that new sanctions will make Iran come around," ElBaradei said in an interview to be published on Sunday.
"President Barack Obama has understood that talks with Iran are the only possible solution," the Nobel Peace laureate said. "If you want to make progress, you have to start talks without preconditions."
Iran won itself a reprieve from the threat of harsher U.N. sanctions by engaging six world powers in high-level talks on Oct. 1 in Geneva that opened the door to detente over its nuclear program after a seven-year standoff.
Iran says its nuclear program is for producing electricity. Western powers fear Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons.
ElBaradei said he was optimistic that follow-up talks in Vienna next week to finalise an agreement with Iran on processing its uranium abroad could open the door to broader talks about Iran's nuclear program.
"With this first step to build trust we could make an important contribution to defuse the crisis," he said.

You couldnt be more wrong if you tried. First off, the feasibility of an israeli strike on Iran is questionable on so many levels than I care to address(numerous & scattered & highly fortified/civilian casualties). Second, your backup is a neocon? Are you kiddin? As a Persian, I can assure you that any israeli or other strike on Iran will strengthen the regime and silence the opposition. Tell Rubin he's out-dated. A lot has happened and is happening in Iran since 'june 23' and we are slowly but surely taking care of the regime and would appreciate you warmongers staying away so we can take care of our business. Thank you.
Yes, war is another option, but so is suicide, and they are very close in outcome. I'd have thought that Cast Lead would have made one thing perfectly clear, the days when Europe was willing to follow the US lead and ignore Israeli actions are over. The EU may be uncomfortable with the Iranian nuclear program, but they're even more uncomfortable with the IDF right now. And the US has a lot of troops sitting, pretty vulnerable, right next to Iran. After all the talk about how Bush blew Afghanistan by heading into Iraq, it will be a hard to sell the idea of heading into Iran. So the US isn't going to do it, it would have to be Israel, and the probable EU reaction is to regard Israel as the aggressor, and the response (whether by Hamas, Hezbollah, or anyone else) as justified, and every reaction to those attacks by Israel will just be regarded as more aggression,
An Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear installations will rebuild Israel's eroded deterrent posture and put paid the notion that Israel is no longer a military power to be reckoned with. And the destruction of Iran's nuclear capacity will weaken Iran's military posture throughout the region and so weaken its terror proxies from Iraq to Lebanon to Gaza to Afghanistan. In short, a successful Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear installations will demonstrate to real rather than fake realists that a strong Israel is indispensible to regional stability and international security. Without any doubts, it will help the democrats in Iran as explained at : http://xrl.us/be82fr
You need to get it through your heads that nobody is going to embark on a mega war on Israel's behalf just so that Israel can be the only nuclear power in the M-E and remain the local bully boys. The rest of the world generally does things differently to Israel, Bush excepted. They talk first, they negotiate, if necessary they impose sanctions, if push really comes to shove they may switch on the bomber engines. Israel, still exhilerated by being local top dog, thanks solely to US weaponry, thinks it clever and brave to strike any targets, military, civil or civilian, with impunity, thanks to US political cover, regardless of the consequences. Fortunately wiser heads will prevail on Iran without the need for 'advice' from the Israeli cowboys.
and it may happen yet, please, don't ignore the obvious.
this man also kissed ahmadinejad on the cheek on international television. this is the same man who has refused to publish the sixty seven page annex to the iaea report. this is the man who would let iran go nuclear without blinking an eye.
obama has only two choices: accept a nuclear iran, and with it a nuclear mid-east, or else attack iran with all the might of the u.s. and allies power.
ElBaradie speaks common sense. It amazes me that Israelis generally and many Americans can't accept that the Iranians have the same sense of national pride as they have. They won't be pushed around. They won't bow down to upstarts.
Iran has made it this far with sanctions in place. And know that any more sanctions would have to be approved (or not vetoed) by Russia and China. And 4-6 of the non-veto security council members. And several of them either have nuclear programs, or are likely considering them, and so not likely to go along with the idea of imposing more than the NPT terms on a country (they could be next) So, pretty much, the options are: Direct talks with no preconditions (and hoping they produce something that can be spun enough to get more countries on board or Try, and likely fail, to impose sanctions for Iran not talking with preconditions.
Iran has made it clear it wants nukes and the rest of the world has made it clear iran cannot have nukes. There is no middle ground. Obama has 2 choices, accept a nuke iran along with nuke mideast or attack iran to prevent it from getting nukes which also sends a clear message to others. Pick one or resign and let someone else make the call.
Sanctions won't work but talks might? Give me a break. Let's just be honest, they want the bomb and nothing will stop them. With their sponsoring of worldwide terrorism they are not qualified to own one. One way or the other they will be stopped.... and soon. It's a good time to sell the V8.
during the inspection talks IMPASSE between syria and IAEA. And this the SAME man who SAYS that nuclear Israel is the GREATEST threat in the ME (as quoted by iranian news agency). So now, he WANTS the US to talk to iran WITHOUT pre-conditions. In other words, he WANTS to buy TIME so that iran can STRIKE while the IRON is HOT. Which, if it happens, RENDERS just about ALL the current American POSITIONS totally USELESS and FOOLISH.
1.Totally disagree that direct talks are the only solution to Iran nuke crisis in the same manner that I also disagree that a two-state is the only solution to The Middle East Crisis. 2.The reason why I totally disagree is bacause I know where the perfect solution to both crises will come from. 3.The Perfect Solution will come from the small shpherd boy mahdi with the Moshiachs Meal, Iftar and Breakfast of Five Loaves and Two Fish.
He should be expelled and tried for being an accomplice of Iran in breaching the NPT, and obstructing crucial information. If he says "talks are only solution" he is expressing that Iran wants talks to continue while they make their nuclear bombs.
