Holocaust diary of Polish teenager unveiled 60 years later
Polish woman hands 60-page memoir of 14-year-old dubbed 'Polish Anna Frank' to Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum.
By The Associated PressThe diary of a 14-year-old Jewish girl, dubbed the Polish Anne Frank, unveiled Monday by Israel's Holocaust museum more than 60 years after the teenager wrote it, vividly describes the world crumbling around her as she came of age in a Jewish ghetto.
"The rope around us is getting tighter and tighter," Rutka Laskier wrote in 1943 shortly before she was deported to Auschwitz. "I'm turning into an animal waiting to die."
Within a few months Rutka did die and, it seemed, so did her diary. But last year, a Polish friend who had safeguarded the notebook finally came forth, exposing a riveting historical document.
Rutka's Notebook is both a daily account of the horrors of the Holocaust in Bedzin, Poland, and a scrapbook detailing the life of a typical teenager in extraordinary circumstances. The 60-page memoir includes innocent adolescent banter, concerns and first loves - combined with a cold analysis of the fate of European Jewry.
Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II, after European Jews were herded into ghettos, banned from most jobs and forced to wear yellow stars to identify them.
"I simply can't believe that one day I will be allowed to leave this house without the yellow star. Or even that this war will end one day. If this happens I will probably lose my mind from joy," she wrote on Feb. 5, 1943. "The little faith I used to have has been completely shattered. If God existed, He would have certainly not permitted that human beings be thrown alive into furnaces, and the heads of little toddlers be smashed with butt of guns or be shoved into sacks and gassed to death."
"Reports of the gassing of Jews, which were not common knowledge in the West by then, apparently filtered into the Bedzin ghetto, which was near Auschwitz," Yad Vashem experts said.
The following day she opened her entry with a heated description of her hatred toward her Nazi tormentors, but then, in an effortless transition, she speaks about her crush on a boy named Janek and the anticipation of a first kiss.
"I think my womanhood has awoken in me. That means, yesterday when I was taking a bath and the water stroked my body, I longed for someone's hands to stroke me, she wrote. I didn't know what it was, I have never had such sensations until now."
Later that day, she shifted back to her harsh reality, casually describing watching a Nazi soldier tearing a Jewish baby away from its mother and killing it with his bare hands.
In addition to chronicling her life in the diary, between January-April 1943, Rutka also shared it with her friend Stanislawa Sapinska. The two met after Rutka's family moved into a home owned by Sapinska's family, which had been confiscated by the Nazis to be included in the Bedzin ghetto. Sapinska randomly came to inspect the home and the young girls - one Jewish, one Christian - formed a deep bond.
When Rutka feared that she would not survive, she told her friend about the diary. Sapinska offered to hide it in the basement under the floorboards. After the war, she returned to reclaim it.
She wanted me to save the diary, Sapinska, now in her late 80s, recalled Monday. She said 'I don't know if I will survive, but I want the diary to live on, so that everyone will know what happened to the Jews.'
Yet, Sapinska stashed the diary away in her home library for more than 60 years. She said it was a precious memento and thought it to be too private to share with others. Only at the behest of her young nephew did she agree to hand it over last year.
"He convinced me that it was an important historical artifact," she said in Polish.
In 1943, Rutka was exactly the same age as Anne Frank, the German-born Dutch teenager whose Holocaust diary has become one of the most widely read books in the world. Yad Vashem said Rutka's newly discovered diary was authenticated by experts and Holocaust survivors.
Rutka's father, Yaakov, was the family's only survivor. He died in 1986. But unlike the Anne Frank's father, he kept his painful past inside. After the war, he moved to Israel, where he started a new family. His Israeli daughter, Zahava Sherz, said her father never spoke of his other children, and the diary introduced her to the long-lost family she never knew.
"I was struck by this deep connection to Rutka," said Sherz, 57. "I was an only child, and now I suddenly have an older sister. This black hole was suddenly filled, and I immediately fell in love with her."
I have a feeling that I am writing for the last time, Rutka wrote on Feb. 20, 1943, as Nazi soldiers began gathering Jews outside her home for deportation.
"I wish it would end already! This torment; this is hell. I try to escape from these thoughts of the next day, but they keep haunting me like nagging flies."
"If only I could say, it's over, you only die once ... but I can't, because despite all these atrocities I want to live, and wait for the following day."
However, Rutka would write again. Her last entry is dated April 24, 1943, and her last written words are: "I'm very bored. The entire day I'm walking around the room. I have nothing to do."
In August, she and her family were shipped to Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp. She is believed to have been murdered upon arrival.

Leon wrote about the Polish Mrs. Sapinska, who kept the diary of her Jewish friend for 60 years: "Just one final Polish violation of the Jewish people". My mama would have said: go wash your mouth. This statement reeks of sheer bigotry. I would like to know how Mr. Leon knows so well what he would have done had he at age 14 been in the same position as Mrs. Sapinska was. Considering his obvious disgust of Poles, it appears to me that he would not even have made any friendship. let alone cherish the relics of that friendship. Shame on you.

This is an important diary that needs to be published.
So what if people deny it. Does it make any difference? Many people deny the Torah is from G-d, does it make any difference to me? Am I going to declare war like the Zionists and Alan Dershowitz and the Holocaust Industry? And if Jews didn't die in the number of 6 million, that's great news. Problem is that Zionists feed on victimization, even when they bomb the living daylights out of innocent children, old people and women in the Gaza and West Bank Ghettos. Go figure.......
There are good Germans and bad Germans just like in EVERY race and religion. If we forget that, the Holocaust could happen again!!!
I hope your not suggesting that all Germans are killers because as I understand it alot of Jews survived because of the kindness of some Germans!
I too want a copy of this book. Too many people are forgetting about what happened during the Holocaust and even trying to DENY IT HAPPENED. We must keep this information out in the public so no one forgets.
What you are saying is incorrect. Otto Frank made many drafts and changes to make the story more juicy. And isn't it interesting that he refused to testify in court against the person who informed on him because he didn't want the information of his black market business to come out? And as far as the Germans are concerned, please point to the German sources (NOT SOVIET) for a number of 6 million. Who counted them? Raul Hilberg says there were no more than 4 or 4.5 million. And there is good reason to believe even that figure is way too high.
The Jews of Poland did not blow up busses or restaurants. The Jews of Poland did not send rockets into Polish towns. The Jews of Poland did not stab Poles with knifes. The Jews of Poland did not ambush the cars of Polish people. Thus nothing that Israel does to the Palestinians can be compared. The Jews are victims in Israel, just like the Jews were victims in Europe. The only difference is, this time the Jews have weapons and some might. Observor i know this fact seems to kill you.
One does not honor the suffering of one group of people by denying or diminishing the suffering of another. Mr. Vickery's position is utterly despicable and at its core different only from the ultra-right wing Israeli positions we see so often on the Haaretz forums. The only difference is which side he supports. The basis of support is the same -- bigotry, pride, nationalism, ignorance.
318 she could have sold the diary for a lot of money had she wanted to. She was attached as the authour was her friend.
As an IDF soldier I never saw single soldier deliberatly murder a Palestinian child and we never loaded anyone on to trains to be enslaved or gased at concentration camps. Can the Palestinians say the same about deliberatly murdering civilians? Remember Munich, shoping malls, airports, planes, sinagogues, city buses, piza place, dance clubs.....
As a IDF soldier I NEVER!!!
A 14 year old is going to be bored, even under a death threat. She was probably referring to the emptiness of her daily life, with no distractions. Otto Frank edited Anna's diary because of sensitive remarks made about Edith Frank, who died in the Shoah, and also because of sexual references. Stanislawa said Rutka's diary contained remarks of an intimate nature. Many people still tend to be more upset by references to sex than to violence. To those who cast doubt on the number of murdered Jews in the Shoah: The Germans kept excellent records, of which they are proud. I notice that no one, so far, has ever come forward to cast doubt on descriptions of brutality in Japanese wartime prison camps. Why are people so willing to accept that the Japanese could be cruel, but not so willing to believe the same about Germans? In fact Japan, already expert in torture, never the less hired Germans to help them update their methods.
WE know more then Jews killed by the Germans, But we cannot forget how Europen countries helped Hitler round up the Jews. and closed their borders A special meeting was called to diuscuss the "Final Solution" It is a very emotional supject. Many of us would have been part of the "FINAL SOLUTION"
All very nice except you forget that Isreal dosen't want the DEATH of everyone. If they wanted ALL the Palestinians dead, they would be DEAD!
When will it not be convenient? 10 years ago? 10 years from now? You'll always say the same thing. And who says it's not 6 million? lol Holocaust deniers? Where is the research to back it up? If you're going to spew numbers back it up with with detailed research not random racist propaganda.
Is it too much to ask people to simply read this article, take the words of the young girl into your hearts, and (for once) to be silent?
more power to you
The individual Roumanians, Croats, French, Dutch, Ukrainians, etc., who collaborated with the Nazis should feel guilty. But what is this blanket condemnation of peoples who were themselves the prey of Nazis? In the case of both my father's and mother's family, first they were persecuted by the Soviets then when they escaped to the West, they became captives of the Germans. Please remember that many others suffered during the evil times in Europe rather than carp on how everyone should be feeling guilty about what happened to one particular group. Judge by individual acts. You insult the memory of the innocent dead who just happened to not be Jewish.
Maybe they can relate but most will think it is an authored document as a significant number of Palestinians and Arabs have their doubts about the accuracy, the multitude or even the Holocaust itself.
What a terrible selfish thing to do! How could she keep the diary to herself? Anne Frank is an inspiration to the entire world. Her "friend" kept it from the world. She calls it a "Precious Memento". As if it's her little keepsake!? The Girl writes "I don't know if I will survive, but I want the diary to live on, so that everyone will know what happened to the Jews." but she does not do that. She is not some kind of hero for bringing it to light. Just one final Polish violation of the Jewish people.
"Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II, after European Jews were herded into ghettos, banned from most jobs and forced to wear yellow stars to identify them." This figure of 6 million is still under debate. Funny how the Jews want to world to believe that it was only Jews who died in the Shoah. Convenient that another Anna Frank has been discovered. Is it your intention that we will forget about the Palestinians that you are killing and oppressing each and every day?
There is a glaring difference- the Jews were never a threat to the Germans and did not blow up their children in buses or their athletes in Olympic games etc....
There is a glaring difference- the Jews were never a threat to the Germans and did not blow up their children in buses or their athletes in Olympic games etc....
Mr. Turkel, not only the Germans but also the Ukrainiens, Romaniens, Hungariens,Poles, French, Dutch, Croatiens and others. At least the Germans have acknowledged their guilt the others have not.
should blame the Jews and not the Israeli for what they are going through? Should every arab blame every jew for what is happening in Israel? You eat, sleep and prosper just as many towns and camps are incircled and confined while starved to death?
Do you think it was revised several times the way Otto Frank revised Anne's diary to make it more attractive to publishers? One must wonder why a person would simply mention being "bored" if indeed she was fearing for her very life. Something smells a bit fishy here.....
The above includes this.... 'a Nazi soldier tearing a Jewish baby away from its mother and killing it with his bare hands.' Can anything be so cruel, evil and sick? Well isn't that exactly what Samar Kuntar did when he shot the Jewish father in front of his four year old daughter, then drowned him to make sure and then smashed the girls head against the rocks kiling her? What do the Nazi in this Polish girls past and the lebanese killer have in common, the 'occupation'?
didnt you just read how horrible this girl's fate and the fate of 6 millions jews has been . jews never lost the war agaisnt germany, you dumbass. jews never blew themselves in berlin pizzerias. jews never hurled stones at german drivers. jews never fired shots at german malls hoping to kill as many as they could. jews never fired rockets to specially kill german civilians. one question for you, when egypt occupied gaza , did palestinians blews themesleves in the streets of cairo ? your analogies are farfetched , probably teinted with deep inner racism , masked with so called hypocritical humanism . in other words your a dumbass racist biiiitch.
You do not see Jewish parents dancing in the stretstreetwith psy check when they die becase they killed Jews.So stop the crap. Have some respect for her.
How dare you relate the pal's situation to the Holocaust. You should be disgusted and ashamed with yourself. The pal's are in their situation because of themselves. All the pal's want to do is blame Israelis for their "self-created" plight. First of all, the land of Israel was given to the Jews by GOD...it says this in the Torah. And you must not be a Jew with a comment like the one you wrote. The pal's want to act like animals..then Israelis will have to treat them like animals. Let's be honest here. Don't you think the Israelis would love nothing more than to rid themselves of the burden of the pal's? The IDF, IAF, etc. would love to just kick back and relax and not worry about the muslims around them. But noooooo!!! The arabs...all they want to do is fight the Jew. It's been this way for years and years and years...and it'll be this way till the end. That's all the arabs know how to do is fight. For goodness sake, the arabs can not even get along with their own kind.
Read Yechiel De-Nur- Ka-Tzetnik
6 Million dead at the hands of the Germans not the Nazi.We must never forget who the killers were!.Just the average German killer,They killed all day and ate and slept well.
Will this very important diary be published?
Any one know where I can get hold of this in print ?
There are aspects of this journal that I am sure many Palestininas will relate to, confinement, being treated like dirt, the checkpoints. Nothing as bad as the Holocaust but bad nontheless. You do not fight an evil by adopting and practicing it. That is to the many Jewish people who post in Haaretz that advocate the pass deportation of Palestinians from Ramallah, East Jerusalem, etc, it would also be a human tragedy, and made worst that it came from children of holocaust survivors.
I hope this important book is available around the world. Rutka's voice must be heard.
That last line of the article, "She is believed to have been murdered upon arrival" chills me.... Ose Shalom Bimromav Hu Yaase shalom aleynu v'al kol yisrael v'imru amen.
