Holocaust deniers face jail under new Hungarian law
Many Hungarian Jews thought to have perished at hands of Nazi backed fascist party during World War II.
By DPA Tags: Holocaust denial Israel newsDenying or playing down the Holocaust in Hungary is to be a criminal offense punishable by up to three years imprisonment after President Laszlo Solyom signed new legislation into law on Wednesday.
A spokesman said the president did not consider the legislation to be in contravention of the constitutional right to freedom of speech.
The legislation, initiated by the governing Hungarian Socialist Party, was passed by Hungary's parliament on February 22 in the last scheduled legislative session before general elections in April.
The centre-right opposition party Fidesz abstained from the vote after the Socialists rejected a motion to extend the scope of the law to also cover crimes committed in the name of Communism from 1948 to 1989.
Some 450,000 Hungarian Jews are thought to have perished during the closing months of the World War II at the hands of the Hungarian fascist Arrow Cross Party, backed by Nazi Germany.

It is not enough to have this horrible economy and depressing times, this sort of law might look positive in the eyes, but actually what it does is the opposite. Hungary's unemployment is some of the highest, while the wages are some of the lowest in the entire EU, while the political elite in control has long lost its credibility (google: police brutality 2006 Hungary) and now they come out and bring a law on top while nationalist groups gaining power due to government enforced financial strain and poverty, the people are radicalizing. This is oil to the fire, and don't tell me that those who came up with this idea didn't know that they just want to enrage the nationalists even more. Go ahead and call me a conspiracy nutcase, but in a nutshell: they are trying to incite hatred from the population against the Jews of Hungary so they would emigrate to Israel "searching for protection". It won't happen, good try but don't think we are idiots not seeing the real goal.
Here we go again. A basic right blown away into the wind. The person on line 13 asked "why is the holocaust SO important?" and makes the case about other horrendous massacres. He hasn't yet figured out, like SO MANY OF US NON JEWS NOW HAVE this very thing: If you aren't a jew, what happens to you isn't important to the jews. Because you are considered a "non human" in their minds, morals and in their oly book the Talmud. Oh yes, my friends we CAN READ. We HAVE INDEED noticed that you only cry for jews. No one else. And you have taught us well!! You have taught us to expect to be treated like sewage, as you treat your own neighbors the Palestinians! Year after year, your Hollywood people crank out Holocaust films. At last estimate over TEN THOUSAND ANTI HOLOCAUST FILMS!! But what about other humanitarian disasters? Zip. Diddly Squat!! Where are the thousands of fils about those? You give us propaganda in the name of entertainment and think we never notice. Well we have noticed!
Should not question the Holocaust. I am not a holocaust denier . i think many jews perished on the hands of criminal Nazis .So did gypsies , Poles homosexuals , mentally ill persons ,etc.etc.... This obsession with the Holocaust is frightening and curious .( Germany never seems to pay enough reparations) and does the money go to the victims or does it go to fat NGOs ( jewish) to fatten up their bank accounts ( Norman Finklestein's:" the Holocaust Industry ") . One cannot criticize israel w/o being accused of anti-semitism and or the Holocaust denial. Israel does wrong and should be called on the carpet. one must separate issues . Even Israel's Occupation is not benin.......because nobody's occupation is benin
wouldn't you?
maybe when you're w/ your 72 virgin camels you'll know?
these people do not deny the holocaust happened, they just don't believe the stories given by jews that 6 million jews perished in the gas chambers. i have seen evidence from the Blue cross that the camps were not as bad as the jews claimed they were. If there is nothing to hide you shouldn't fear any investigation, allow us to see and understand for ourselves. after all no one believes anything until proof is presented. Seems to me that you are hiding something. one shoulod not be jailed for questioning or investigating WWII allegations. when one goes to court he is jailed on proof, but in the case of these people proof is not presented but hidden. somethign smells fishy here and we need to get to the bottom of it all. allow experts in to check. todays technology can do amazing things when it comes to proving facts.
The holocaust was murderous, but how was it more murderous than the Russian famine in the Ukraine which killed more people or the Japanese rampage in China which killed maybe five times as many?
Hungary is absolutely right to pass this law. Holocaust denial is not an "opinion" but an extreme form of criminal libel.
Ah,the thought of it! Ahmadinejad getting off the plane at Budapest Airport, opening his mouth and getting hauled straight off to jail. One more place where he's not wanted. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
#10 is the president of Hugery sensitve to the human rights of the Palestinian as well or more sensiteve to USA dollares .How in countries where the champion freedom of speech but the jail people for denying a historial fact,In Europe you can deny the existance of God and nothing happened to you so the Holocost is more important than God ???????
Hungary's president is right-wing and not Jewish. He is a lawyer and very sensitive of human rights.
We all know the holocausr happened so why are there laws being made to stop freedom of speech. If some nuttas want to believe it didn't happen than let them, they will be treated accordingly by society. This law just reinforces the view that you can not say anything about jews without facing punishment and that jews do not believe in freedom of speech when it comes to them.
when there is none. These free speech events have moral and legal consequences. the world decided years ago that the Holocaust was the most murderous event in human history and that when you deny its existence you will incur legal and moral penalties. Remember it was the denial of the holocaust that brought Ahmdenijad to the world attention.
permission to speek for me...Supporters and Deniers must not speek for Ignorers...
He is calling himself "Holocaust Ignorer", because in reality he is a "Holocaust Supporter". 1. He really knows that the Holocaust took place. 2. He understands that it would be rediculous to deny it. 3. He knows that the existing public opinion condemns the Holocaust and Holocaust deniers (like Ahmadinejad). By that reason,, he prefers to pretend that he simply "Ignores the Holocausr". He hopes that Hitler's era will come again. Then he will not ignore the Holocausr, but will support the Holocaust OPENLY. Please don't ignore the Holocaust Ignorer's. Communist Party of the Soviet Union also ignored the Holocaust, because in reallity it was a Fascist-like organization: - The USSR was Hitler's ally in the beginning if WW2.
Holocaust deniers are ignorant people. But laws banning people's right to be stupid, are dumber than the deniers themselves. This new law only helps far-right parties who will see this law as a violation of Hungararian's right to free speech. Europeans affected by these laws should demand the European Court of Justice rule on their validity.
If you are ignoring the holocaust, why are you writing about it? Chamor.
You can't talk about a subject unless you use the appropriate viewpoint, but this isn't an infringement of your right to free speech. It's embarrassing people can actually put out such a ridiculous concept.
I beleive
Deniers and supporters of the holocaust are only looking for attention and in the process you disrupt the lives of thoes who chose to ignore the issue.
