Haniyeh: Deal for Shalit's release still long way off
Palestinian PM says hopes outstanding disagreements with Fatah over unity gov't will be resolved soon.
By Haaretz ServicePalestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Friday that reaching a deal on the release of captive Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit is "complex and difficult," and will require much additional work to be reached, Army Radio reported.
In comments published Friday in the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat, Haniyeh said Fatah and Hamas had already embarked on the path of forming a unity government, and that he hoped the outstanding disagreements between them would be resolved in ongoing negotiations in Gaza.
Asked whether Hamas would engage in negotiations with Israel if a Palestinian unity government is formed, Haniyeh replied that it is still too early to say.
Abu Mujahid, a spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees militant group, said two weeks ago that Shalit would be released only when Israel freed 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.
"We are prepared to keep him for several years more, as long as our demands are not met," he said.
He added that Shalit is in a good state of health and that he is being treated according to Muslim standards for treating prisoners of war.

Isn't this the same guy who knew nothing about Gilad Shalit and his kidnapping? Who denied all knowledge and involvement? Lies, lies and more lies. Palestinians are never going to get it right. Don't they know the international community will never give this man a dime?
What would happen with Gilad Shalit if another human being, non-Israeli, was ready to take his place until Palestinian prisoners were released (who? how many?)? You cannot leave this question w/o an answer!
What garbage. These terrorists kidnapped our solider. The only complexity is trying to figure out how much they want in blackmail and how Olmert will be able to steal part of it. We are being ruled by corruption, greed and incompetence. If not how come we still don't have our soliders back?
inform hamas that we will be killing 20 hamas animals a day before shalit is released without conditions.
Next time this corrupt fraudulent psychopath crossing from Gaza to Egypt on his way to see his lovers in Tehran, Israel's secret agents should kidnap him and then see what it will take to release Shalit. Haniyeh is nothing more than a mafia-like thug who has been taught well by those like Ahamadinejad, Meshal, Nazrallah - the perverts of Islam - how to use religion for their own personal gains. Not much different than the Evangelical thugs like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and the perverts of Christianity. The only difference between the two groups is that the Evangelicals kill the minds and souls of their followers, the Islamist kill the mind, body and soul. They are all disgusting, pathetic human beings. Israel, make your move. You need to catch the big fish and get the big prize. Move on him now. You'll see Shalits value quickly.
We have seen what happened to Ron Arad when people are treated according to "Muslim Standards". Let him be treated according to the international law. Where is the Int. Red Cross Committee ? Have they visited the Israeli kidnapped soldiers in Gaza or Lebanon ?
abducted, at which time Haniyeh and the other Hamas leaders claimed that they had nothing to do with the abduction and certainly did not know where he was being held. Can anyone trust these people, Haniyeh who is a "prime minister" and wants to be a player in international fields?
Hanieh is playing with fire. He should prove that Shalit is still alive and well. I believe Shalit was spent.
What Haniyeh needs is assurance that when Shallit is released which I think will be sooner rather than later is that Abbas still work with Hamas. Its all Hamas have but they will have to take the gamble for they have little going for them now America has its plan all over the area in effect. Syria goes,Hamas is done. Its in Abbas's good graces but should he include Hamas there goes his power and HE is done too.
Arrest this guy Haniyeh hang him by his thumbs and beat his ass everyday until he agrees to release shalit. dont cut them any slack until this soldier is back home with his family.
Rather than letting this soldier set free as a goodwill gesture these low lifes continue to hold him. Probably noone is in charge or everyone is in charge. Typical Moslem bs.
I don't doubt for one minute that reaching a deal on the release of Gilad Shalit is "complex and difficult," as the illustrious Palestinian PM claims. Because he may already be dead. The time is LONG PAST DUE for Haniyeh and his vassals to show everyone that he really is "in a good state of health". For all we know, that phrase could mean, "he's dead," when it rolls from the tongue of a man who hates Jews as much as Haniyeh. Who has actually seen Shalit? Where is the PROOF OF LIFE? If Shalit is dead -- which is, sadly, a very real possibility right now -- this would represent a NEW LOW for Palestinian extremists (and the apologists who support them abroad, no matter what crimes they commit in the name of "justice"). Lying about a man's life, and demanding 1000 live prisoners in exchange for the body, is something that only a person who has lost their soul could do. Let's all hope that Shalit truly is alive and well.
The networked system of Hamas-Fatah and foreign contacts seems to have led to a deadlock between Hamas and Fatah that fed by and contributes to a splintering in discipline amongst their younger armed cadres. Until that can get worked out there doesn't seem to be a basis on the Palestinian side for a consensus that could suggest, reject, or accept arrangements with Israel.
Its time to take this weapon away from Haniyeh. Israelis need to begin to accept the loss of Shalit as an IDF member and that despite the sadness and the tragedy it will represent for his family, this was always a possibility as a Israeli soldier. It needs tio be done. Once Shalit is given up for lost, the enemies of Israel will have one less weapon to play with.
Haniyeh is slithering around as usual, refusing to be the least bit honorable as a negotiator, and leaving the distinct impression that in the end, there is no hope for Shalit to be released or, for that matter, kept alive (if he even is alive now). "Muslim standards" for treatment of prisoners haven't been all that great from what I've seen over the years. The sooner Abbas eliminates him, the better.
Haniyeh is the head of what passes for the elected government of palestinians. He is no longer an underground terrorist but a very above ground terrorist. He is admitting to controlling Shalit's fate. He is targetable. He should be arrested with the rest of these Hamas operatives who now constitute the 'government' and if the Israeli Supreme Court says they can't then call for a temporary martial law edict in Judea & Samaria and Gaza. Keep these guys under lock and key- no interviews, special dinners or special guests. No Al-Jazerra interviews. No cell phones. Until Shalit is produced they stay in jail. With their removal from the scene, Fatah will begin to take over and fatah is presently a greater danger to Hamas than the IDF is. Shalit will be released so Hamas leadership can get back and command their forces against fatah.
