Hamas TV defies gov't request, airs anti-Israel children's show

PA minister asked Al Aqsa TV to stop broadcasts; show urges kids to back armed resistance against Israel.

By Reuters

Hamas's television station defied the Palestinian government on Friday by airing a show featuring a Mickey Mouse look-alike that urges children to support armed resistance against Israel.

Called "Tomorrow's Pioneers", the show that airs weekly on Hamas's Al-Aqsa Television features a character named "Farfur", an actor dressed in a full body-suit that resembles Walt Disney's famous cartoon character.

Following complaints by Israeli watchdog groups that triggered international scrutiny, Palestinian Information Minister Mustafa Barghouthi said he asked Al-Aqsa to stop the broadcasts so the content could be reviewed.

Despite Barghouthi's call, "Tomorrow's Pioneers" went on the air as usual on Friday.

During one of the skits, Farfur told young viewers that he aspired to be like the slain spiritual leaders of Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood.

A young girl, who identified herself as Amani, called in to the show to sing a popular Hamas song.

"Jerusalem we are coming. We will not rest and we will not be humiliated," Amani sang as Farfur danced on a stage decorated with drawings, including one of a rocket.

In previous shows, Farfur called for Israel to be vanquished and Islam to "lead the world".

The show, which airs Fridays, features a young girl in head covering and an adult moderator who instructs young viewers on Hamas's brand of Muslim piety.

Hazin al-Sharawi, the adult moderator, said during Friday's show that "the Jews, the Jews don't like Palestinians."

Al-Aqsa Television is part of Hamas's media campaign for political dominance over Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's secular Fatah faction.

Fathi Hammad, chairman of Al-Aqsa Television, defended the show: "It does not violate any moral or professional standard," he told a Hamas Web site, adding it would not be withdrawn, nor will its content be modified.

Palestinian political analyst Hani Habib said the Al-Aqsa show was a Hamas recruitment tool.

"This program markets death when a child is supposed to have a long future to come."

But 10-year-old fan Hanin, said the show was mostly educational. "The show teaches us to recite the Quran, to pray and to speak in formal Arabic. We want the show to continue."

Opression?? They were offered their own state long ago, but refused it because they wanted it all, and this is still their goal. Peace? Even when there is a short period of calm, who are the ones who break it? The pals--with more bombs and rockets hurled at Israel. All they need to do is stop this crap and it would be over-but they won't, because they will not be satisfied until Israel no longer exists--and God is not going to allow that to happen-so, I guess we have a standoff---

Israel does not hold a monopoly. There were no excursions before Arab terrorist attacks. There were no fences before Arab terorist attacks. There were no checkpoints...no bypass roads...Every step of the way...And this is not a "speck" in their eye. It is a culture of demonization and ethnic cleansing. When your news reports that Jews drink the blood of Arab babies to celebrate holidays, created HIV and Bird flu, that all Arab social problems are zionist plots (as are pokemon and barbie) (the list goes on and on...) when children's tv and little league teams and stadiums are named after terrorists who murder dozens of Israeli civilians...this is not a "speck"

You're confusing the tactic of spreading hate amongst children-- human individuals with the most impressionable minds-- with a legitimate revolution. Aside from the fact that Hamas, IJ, PLO, and any other "Arab resistance fighting force" simply has refused to speak in any terms that considers Israel's right to exist-- a right developed in the 1940s along with most of the African nations, most of the Arabian nations-- as a peaceful measure. If you really want to look back at commentary and quotations, do a search for Yasser Arafat's glorydays and you will discover all the double speak and hate speech that many Jews have heard for the past 3000 years in dealing with the hatred of our people. That we drink the blood of children, control the banks and gas companies, and, of course, command others to fight our wars for us. And now young, impressionable Palestinian children are told these lies from the mouth of a mouse. Of course, we could just roll over and die. Will that be okay?

All nationalists (and racists) have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage-torture, the use of hostages, forced labor, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians-which does not change its moral color when committed by ?our? side. The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them. They would just love to make good business with Israelis.... And come on, the fact that the Likud has become even too extreme for the super-patriot Ariel Sharon, should really let your alarm-bells ring... I know, you are still very young, just wait a bit, in 20 years when you will have my life-experience, you might see many things differently.... The anti-Israel readers of this forum will hate Israel no matter what. The very idea of Israel's existance as a Jewish State-even living next to Arab Palestine-triggers their hatred. It would do well to call attention to the brainwashing of Arab children. I have always felt that the Arabs have the upper hand when it comes to propaganda against Israel and the Hebrew People. They are persistent and they have become very good at twisting truth. I believe a different philosophical approach is necessary to deflect these odious teachings. It may seem strange, but I believe that one way to confound these cultural attacks would be to emphasize the common origins of the two races. We are all children of Abraham and our nations' names derive from our common ancestor: Ivrim and Aravim. Would it not be a positive policy to educate the Arab youngsters about our common heritage to alleviate the demonization that prevails between us? Creative TV aimed at them might be helpful in countering the vicious railings of the anti-Hebrew propagandists; the hateful death culture promoted by characters like Mickey Rat.

For one to a supporter of the Likud, one either has to be completely ignorant of the facts or fully know the history of this region(Palestine/Israel). The fact of the matter is, that we who know the history of the this region also know there is a Palestinian, yet we also know there is already a Palestinian State in what was Palestine. Given the fact that the UN changed the face of Palestine to only include lands west of the Jordan, we are now stuck with an issue of another arab state in what the Balfour Declaration declared to be a "zone" for a Jewish Homeland. We in the Likud are tired of the world changing their minds and appeasing to the arab world at our expense. An example of this being the UN or League of Nations partitioning of Palestine to create an arab state in the midst of a jewish state, while also creating an arab state (palestinian and heshemite) to the west. The Jews at the end get gipped, and arabs as usual appeased for fears of terror and violence.

It was the Labor governerment that won the elections after a spate of particularly spate of horrendous terrorist attacks - Israelis still believed that Oslo should still continue as it was our true home for peace. Arafat put paid to all that. Palestinian terrorists did also not attack us less when Labor (Rabin and Barak) were in power - what does that say about them? "This is the result. Hate, hate, and more hate" You seem to forget that the Palestinian hatred of Jews began way back before the establishment of the State of Israel. There were Arab riots in Jaffa in 1921, a pogrom in Hebron in 1929, and many more such events in between and afterwards, when Israel didn't even exist, and the only thing Jews were doing was buying up land, much of it unwanted and wasteland, and settling in it.

Nephtaly, Chanah, I know very well that the Likud has never ordered suicide bombings against Palestinians. However, I would like to know: What has costed the lifes of more innocent civilians (on BOTH sides): Hamas's terror attacks or Likuds hard line policies...??? I am not sure whether the result would favour Likud. And yes, Likud is not calling for the (physical) destruction of the Palestinian people, but it is refusing to accept a Palestinian state. And that is exactly what Hamas is (sadly) doing now, namely not accepting Israels right to exist. So where is the difference, please...?? P.S. Nephtaly, I like you as a person, but I despise the party you are voting for.

Please quote your source for this claim please. I think I recall one person using that term and he was castigated by everyone and torn to pieces by the press. On the other hand Friday after Friday your religious leaders preach about the Jews as dogs and pigs, about world domination, the supriority of Islam etc - now using a lovable cartoon character to influence the minds of your children to "eliminate the JEws" and restore Islanm to its former glory and rightful place as ruler of the world. Hate is your middle name and cynicism comes a close second. And by the way, you should change your Hebrew name to something more suitable.

The point I am making is that it doesn't matter if it is one or a thousand, teaching children to hate is wrong. It isn't just the Palestinians who teach their children to hate, Israelis do to. Therefore Israel does not have the moral high ground in this case. I am sorry if I ruined your party, rained on your parade. In this case Israel cannot claim the moral high ground. The fact you have resorted to personal attacks proves my point. Your just pissed that I have remembered an incident and was able to find examples in the Israeli media. If you think that poisoning children's minds with garbage propoganda and hatred is a form of legitimate resistance, teaching them that jihad is their future rather than preparing them to cope with the 20th century (educations, skills, hope) then you are a very sick person. We are already seeing that this policy is backfiring on you- you have raised a generation of violent youths whose main aim in life is to run around the streets carrying Ak47 rifles. The virulent hatred has permeated every niche of your society, from the classromm to the mosque to the soccer field (teams names after suicide murderers) and you people are paying the price (kids getting shot at on the sports field). If by now you cannot grasp that you are destroying yourselves far mor than you are harming Israel, then you deserve what you get. Keep on teaching your children that Jews are pigs and dogs and that is what they will become. It's a society than demands human rights but never ceases to dehumanize others.

There is a big difference when children are taught to love their country (Israel is the country of Israelis) - as children throughout the entire world are taught, even in your country,, where each learns its own history, trials and tribulations, the anthem, flag etc -- and teaching children to hate others, blame othes for their failures, and encourage them to grow up with a single aim - to kill. Most people try to educate their children toward a better future, to become skilled and usefull citizens able to cope with the modern world. The Arabs, and particularly the Palestinians, are sorely lacking in this area. If anyone thinks life would be hunky dory if Israel disappeared, they are wrong. And if anyone thinks that the Palestinian's "pursuit of happiness" is more valid than that of the Israelis/Jews - can also forget about it.

People with a little bit of political wisdom have foreseen todays scenario a long time ago. It may be hard for you to understand, but fact is: Israel hasn't given the Palestinians a lot of reasons to love (or only like) her over the past decades. I thought that the pictures of the Israeli children writing slogans such as "With love from the children of Israel" on artillery shells did put this story into perspective. That both sides of the conflict are sowing hatred into their children is an irrefutable fact, backed up with evidence. Hence my feelings that once again there is double standards from Israel in Israeli shock and anger in the Hamas telly programme, when those photographs of those Israeli girls, encouraged by their parents to do what they did, led to no reaction from the Israeli public. Either during the war or afterwards.

After all, the topics Israel would like to see on Palestinian TV are more along the lines of 'Why it's ok to be occupied' and 'how can we give Israelis more land, because they deserve it!' I'm sure that if the Israeli propaganda division ever took over Palestinian TV it would show Israeli soldiers putting their boots on the heads of Palestinian children lying down on the ground, and emphasize how desirable an outcome that is.

No Dino, whatever you think of Israel actions or reactions this is not what caused the rise of Hamas. Like all over the muslim world the nationalist struggles or political opponents have become islamists. The only reasons are the subversive agenda and influence (with petro$$$) of Iran since the islamist revolution in 79. And the accomplice silence of Saudi Arabia.

The mouse is vile. Now here are a selection of equally vile comments. Yes, these are targeted toward adults, but I assume some of their authors have children. Do their children hear opinions like this at home? "NOBODY likes Pals... And why should anybody like brain-dead suicidal Pal maniacs anyway?" "Forget the Palestinians, they are social misfits". "That does it. Kill all pig palis associated with Hamas". "Your Egyptians and Jordanians don`t want you and you know it. Only Israelis have treated you humanly ,alas. They still have illusions about pal murderous beggars". And we are only up to post #50. Perhaps we need to look at hate within the Jewish world as well. But of course, it's not our fault...we are just responding to the Palestinian predisposition to violence...Funny, that's the same thing "they" say about us.

Memritv is not the most reliable source for those who are deficient in Arab language skills to go to when trying to learn what is actually said by Arab speakers. When reporting on this story, CNN said that its own Arab linguists disputed the memritv translation. CNN stated that what was actually said was something along the lines of "The Jews are killing us." But it wouldn't be the first time that I have seen memri spin language to favor the Zionist Jewish agenda.

Ghandi and Martin Luther King demonstrated this. I do not say this lightly.

Such shame Hamas is raining down on them. They are not a people defending their land. They are a people sacrificing their children without a cause. So, so, so sad. Pray for the children.

Hello, my dear Polybios, Sorry, if I have to scratch a little bit on your (Middle-Eastern) world view, but I am afraid it just has to be...:) If I remember well (and I usually do...), in the early days of Oslo there were very different messages coming from the West Bank and Gaza and Hamas was far away from "running the show". So maybe in your quietest moments (you see, I like Supertramp...) you might think about what brought religious extremism into the Palestinian territories (with the final consequence of Hamas winning the elections more than a year ago). Yes, the monumental corruption of Fatah under Arafat played a mayor role in it, but AT LEAST 50 % of blame for todays political misery in Gaza and Ramallah is laying heavily on the shoulders of the Israeli political establi- shment. (Settlement expansion, consequent igno- ring of Abbas etc...) Remember good old Colin Powell: You break it, you own it. PLEASE, PLEASE, (at least try to) fix it !!

When will people stop blindly advocating for the creation of a PA state before giving even the slightest thought to what KIND of country it would be in its policies? This much is certain: a human-rights friendly PA (at least as much as Israel), which doesn't condone or preach hate, is an absolute precondition to its real peaceful coexistence with Israel.
