Hamas: Shalit won't be freed until Israel accepts our demands
Deal for release of soldier snagged over dozens of prisoners; Hamas vows commitment to resistance.
By Jack Khoury Tags: Gilad Shalit Hamas Israel newsHamas threatened on Monday that abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit would never be released until Israel acceded to its demands regarding the list of prisoners it wants freed as part of an exchange deal.
"These prisoners are a surety which we must redeem," Hamas wrote in an official statement. "We will not give up on them, no matter how long it takes. That is what we swore and that is our obligation, and we will not give up until every last prisoner is freed from the prisons of the occupation."
Hamas also said that it still believed in the principle of resistance as a strategy for removing all Palestinian land from under the occupation and for the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement added that Hamas was prepared to reconcile with the rival Fatah movement on the basis of Palestinian national interests and the preservation of the principle of resistance to the occupation, and said direct talks were the only way to resolve the factional conflict.
Media reports over the last few weeks have predicted an imminent deal for the release of Shalit, who was abducted three years ago in a cross-border raid from the Gaza Strip.
The negotiations have snagged, however, over dozens prisoners which Hamas has demanded be released.

Hamas will demand everyday more and more criminals. I hope Israel will in exchange lwet free hundreds of small criminals, any way Irael will save lots of money in food. medical and just in buying korans
Hello Natalie. I am sure you were behind the linching of Rodney King in LA. your hatred towards everybody is well known. you are sick, I beg you look for some help.
Neither government really wants it--too expensive for the Israelis; Hamas likes holding an Isaeli soldier -it's good PR for them. Only the relatives on both sides want a deal. Unfortunately, they don't have much power.
Danny, yiou are absolutely right. The mistakes started when Begin returne the whole of the Sinai, when sadat wanted only the area on the East Bank that they occupied and for Israel to retrieve from the West Bank of the Suez.gaza should never been returned.A pal "state" West of the Jordan will be an iranian base a week later...and if Israel returnes the Golan, the syrians can cut the State in two easy...Would be also an iranian base...NO RETURNS
Mark, Mark, Mark: the topic is freeing Shalit alive and who has responsibility for that--Hamas by being reasonable or Israel by making unreasonable concessions to get him back alive. I don't think the topic is putting him in the middle of a crossfire.
As long as any Israeli, any of loved ones, our family members and friends are vulnerable to Hamas suicide attacks, rockets, shootings, and kidnappings none of us will be free and there will be no peace. Negotiating with mass murderers is not going to bring peace nor will freeing serial killers to kill again.
Shalit must bear the burden of Israel's arrogance;they have trouble coming to terms with defeat since they are so used to winning with America's help. In this case there is absolutely nothing the US can do to bail them out, they must submit to Hamas' demands or else. Every once in a while, the underdog gets in a wicked left hook leaving the champ in a daze.
israel should NOT trade for shalit. sorry to say, and sorry to gilad, but it's not worth it. Really, hundreds of heinous murderers for one person? murderers who will do so again? there is no point and it's a lesson hamas has already said they learned from and that it achieves their goals...israel should tell them, sorry, we have rethought it and there will be no prisoner exchange, now or ever...that would put an end to this disgrace..and shalits parents should shut up and stop their sob story tour...do they know what they are selfishly asking families of murded co citizens to accept? that it wil happen again ? come on...again, sorry gilad, but as an israeli who loves your country, I am sure you would agree. god bless you gilad.
SHMUALCHAHOR WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE GIVEN GAZA BACK. AND WE MUST NEVER BUT, NEVER GIVE THE GOLAN BACK.
MARKOS SOUSA IN BRAZIL GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILY.
now in our prisons.does that mean the palestinians are prepared to keep one thousand of their prisoners with us so they get the honour to keep one of ours. they do not place value on their brethren.
JACKIE GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILY. HAPPY HANUKAH
And free all political prisoners in exchange for negotiating a durable peace between the Israeli state and a Palestinian state that their political parties govern in cooperation with each other. If there was ever a time for unity, on both sides as a matter of fact, between all peace-loving factions, this is it.
While they were seeking statehood, Jewish terrorists commanded by Menachem Begin kidnapped two British soldiers. They lynched them and dumped the bodies. None of this liberal negotiating for prisoners business. If hamas wants to get to where Israel is, then they must learn to act as Israel acts.
Israel needs to respond with a sophisticated declaration that they will no longer recognize the right of this 'part' of the PA to exist any longer and cut off ALL aid, allow those who want to flee from Hamas safe passage into the west bank or Jordan and starve Hamas into oblivion. Enough is enough.
... for Abbas, and give the finger to Hamas!
Now that Israel knows where Shalit is kept, Bibi can order Hannibal any time he wants, too. It's just a matter of spinning why Shalit should become a Jewish Shaheed.
Look we've been down this road before. Hamas makes demands and if all of them are not met, No Deal. Hamas does this 3-4 times per year for PR reasons, they have no intention of releasing Shalit, sadly. Here are more cute pictures of their kids. And the lessons they teach. http://www.faithfreedom.org/category/image-galleries/children-islam
A Jewish Life is most precious,bu the State of Israel cannot bend to the wishes of a gang of murderers iranian surrogates.gaza should have turned into a parking lot a long time ago
I really sorry for Shalit, but I hope Israel let those thugs to rotten in the jail!
Chris, there is a misunderstanding here. Hamas, not Bibi, took Shalit prisoner. Hamas is holding Shalit captive, not Bibi. Hamas can free him any time they like.
Negotiations with Hamas will always collapse until Hamas stops using any concessions as jumping off points for more demands. Is Hamas incapable of keeping their prisoners alive without attempting to use their capture to extort bargaining chips? So far we've ended up with this sorry spectacle and even shabbier spectacles with Hezbollah involving blackmail for bones.
you better stop in tel aviv calling all the time for colective punishment of millions of palestinians for one prisoner of war. do also not forget that there was another soldier wounded in the attack that was spared his life. those hamas figthers did not kill him although they could have done that. you tel avivians are advised to respect international law.
He is more vlaluable to Israel as a prisoner of HAMAS than at home with his parents. How else can Israel justify it's policy of deliberate starvation, denial of medicines including Tamiflu and Swine Flu vaccines? Let alone witholding supplies to repair the schools and hospitals destroyed during Operation Cast Lead.
The prisoners Hamas wants are those already convicted of killing Israelis. One of them has promised to resume his activities as soom as he is let out of prison. Ever heard the term "serial killers?" Also, people seem to forget that Shalit was kidnapped on Israeli land (behind the Green Line, no less) in an attack in which Hamas killed two other Israeli soldiers. One prisoner for Shalit, no more and not one with "blood on his.her hands"!
I pity Gilad Shalit but also the likes of Abdallah Abu Rahmah the high school teacher from Bil'in, jailed for his non violent struggle to save his village land from Israel's wall and expanding settlements. Also Mohamad Othman from Jayyous and many others jailed by Israel for working for justice for their countrymen. You can learn more of their plight on the "Jewish voice for peace" website.
Israel should round up Hamas leaders in exchange for Shallit. Never give in to the thugs. Do what Sharon and Dayan used to do in dealing with this kind of challenges. Alternatively, do what Golda did to the terrorists in the 1970s.
Cut off all supplies via Israel to Gaza until Shalit released.
The Israeli government should use all means (including shutting of electricity, water, bombings, etc.) needed to release Gilad. Releasing hundreds of Jew hating murderers who will repeat their acts again is not the right way.
The Pals jailed for 30 years as the result of murders committed against innocent civilians, in restaurants, buses and caffes. They standed trials , got lawyers that defendend them and do have now visits from IRC,TV , newspapers, write letters, conjugal visits, get parcels, mobile phones and open university degree studies. Some already got Masters and study for doctorates in the Israeli jail. What rights got Gilad?
Yep, if pals locked up for 30 for resisting occupation shalit should be locked up for 30 yrs for enforcing the occupation.
